“Lovely” Narrative from Donna at Women for Romney

I thought this was so good, it deserved a much greater audience here at Elect Romney in 2008…!

Who am I now, if I’m not the girl touting Mitt Romney for President of the United States?
by Donna Lovely
Women for Romney.

Long before the news broke, and by shear accident, I stumbled upon a tip by Byron York over at The Corner. He was reporting from CPAC this morning that rumor had it Mitt Romney was suspending his campaign for President. I reread the post three times, and with hands shaking, immediately shared the news via email with another ardent supporter of Mitts, Vic Lundquist, over at ElectRomney2008. Thankfully, Vic must have been in his office to receive my email and sent a quick response back stating that he hoped it wasn’t true, and thanked me. I’m sure I rocked his world, but Vic’s a pretty level headed guy, and I’m sure he’s heard rumors before. This rumor, however, by Byron York, had an air of credibility to it for some reason. Perhaps because the reason given for Mitt’s resignation was one of selflessness, and that rung true of the man I have come to know, admire and support …. He was doing it for the good of the country, the party, and the war.

I quickly settled down to watch the coverage of CPAC where they cut in late on Laura Ingrahams introduction of Mitt. She looked pale. She appeared shaken, but like the strong lady that she is, she got on with it. As always, Laura spoke with conviction laced with humor, got some great jabs in at McCain by way of her “just calm down” references, and proudly introduced Mitt Romney as the “Conservatives Conservative.”

One wouldn’t have guessed that Mitt had made a life changing decision by his approach to the podium, or the greeting he gave to his faithful supporters. As always, he was cheerful, strong in voice, and warm in facial expression. And then, once again, Mitt Romney delivered a speech that was clear and concise of message, optimistic and visionary in presentation, factual and moving in understanding the challenges of our time. By itself, it was a fantastic speech. The crowd was applauding enthusiastically. I kept waiting for the lead in, where one sentence would lead into the beginning of the announcement of his decision to end his bid for the White House…..and then, like a freight train in the dead of a cold winter’s night, I could hear it coming. If my ears hadn’t been waiting for it, I wouldn’t have recognized it for what it was. But it was there. He was transitioning from what he envisioned, to what was reality, and in an instant he spoke the words I was dreading.

Mitt Romney, Governor, businessman, father, husband, son, leader, man of extraordinary faith & a hero to me, resigned today from his long, hard fought battle for the Presidency of the United States. I’ve been following and working at the grass roots level since Mitt’s announcement to run, and so of course, I cried. My hope & dreams that he was the one man that could bring this country back from the brink…. culturally, economically, and militarily, would be no more. My heart broke for Ann; they gave so very much of themselves to this campaign. As a resident of Iowa, I personally witnessed the amount of time, work, energy and dedication that this family gave to get his campaign off the ground. He came so close, and to my great bewilderment and frustration, the country seemed to be realizing, too little too late, that Mitt Romney would have brought us one step closer to greatness, if only he had been given the chance, been viewed with a more open mind, listened to with less bias, and embraced with a purer heart. And now, it’s too late.

I’m sure I will cry again between now and the election; in frustration, aggravation, and definite sadness for what might have been if we had been smart enough as a nation to not let slip through our fingers the opportunity to have given this wonderful man, Mitt Romney, the chance to lead the greatest nation on earth. In the meantime, like many of the Romney faithful, I will have to ask myself again and again…..”Who am I, if I am not the girl touting Mitt Romney for President?” His reasoning for suspending his campaign gives me pause to realize I will need to reassess my commitment to the party, and more importantly, our conservative cause, and that while it may not be with Mitt as President, the stakes are just too high to sit this one out (as I had recently vowed if Mitt Romney was not elected as the GOP nominee.)

And so it is, that in one final ironic twist of fate, and overpowering the shadow of cynicism and criticalness that was raised about Governor Romney’s service to this country, Mitt Romney DID indeed ultimately make a truly unselfish sacrifice on behalf of this country, the war, and the military for whom he holds in such high regard. It was just his destiny to do it in a different sort of way. Watch his wonderful speech in it’s entirety, and you will begin to understand this too.

Like so many other Romney supporters, it has taken me all day to process the events of Governor Romney’s announcement. I would be remiss to not make a final post, and although it’s somewhat windy, like everything that I have ever done on Governor Romney’s behalf, it is done so with a heartfelt passion that few have ever inspired in me………..for that reason, among many, I will miss his presence and his candidacy. He will, however, forever be an inspiration and driving force in me to speak up, say and do what I believe and know is right.

Considering Mitt? Roe v. Wade and the Real Romney

For fellow conservatives considering Mitt for the first time, it’s important to understand Mitt’s staunch support of the pro-life platform.  The media has tried to downplay and negate Mitt’s position on this.  They’ve managed to stick a big old post-it note on Mitt’s forehead labelled “Flip Flopper” in permanent ink.  They’ve asserted that he lacks conviction.  They’re wrong.  As Governor, Mitt consistently stuck to conservative principles.  On abortion, marriage, health care, economy and other important issues, Mitt consistenly made conservative decisions.  For a great summary on Mitt’s real record, see Ann Marie’s post back in November 2007.

On Monday, the 35th anniversay of Roe v. Wade, Mitt once again committed to overturning this decision:

After 35 years of Roe v. Wade, we are again reminded why this decision should be overturned,” Romney said in a statement provided to LifeNews.com.

“We recognize the worth and dignity of every person, a fact that is ingrained in our hearts and etched in our national purpose,” Romney added. “Unelected judges should not be the final arbiters on these important decisions which define who we are as a people.”

Recently, Romney told Nevada voters that he wanted the high court to overturn the infamous decision allowing virtually unlimited abortions.

“I am pro-life, and I would welcome a time when the people of America concluded that abortion was wrong, but that’s not where America is, and that’s why I believe that the next right step for America is for the court to overturn Roe v. Wade,” he said then.

“That would return to the states and to the elected representatives of the people the ability to set their own laws related to abortion,” he said.

“Today, as Americans from across this country participate in the annual March for Life, my thoughts are with all those whose dedication and compassionate concern have done so much to educate and assist others in creating a genuine culture of life,” he said.

The last phrase is a very telling remark.  As he does with so many issues, Mitt is able to look at the broader implications and ramifications of following a certain path.  When he discusses his decision to become politically pro-life, Mitt often states that as Governor he realized that the effects of Roe v. Wade weren’t just limited to abortion.  They extended to issues like embryonic stem cell research and teenage pregnancy, and to the very basic fabric of our culture.  The question, “Are we a culture of life, or of death,” has strong ramifications for our children, their education, their government, their health, their society and their future.  Mitt understood (and has helped me understand) that the issue of abortion isn’t solely about choice or murder or rights - it’s about the kind of culture, society and country we are creating (or destroying) for the next generation.

If you are unsure about Mitt’s conviction on this or other social issues such as marriage, please DO NOT believe the picture the media has painted.  Please take a few minutes to visit Mitt’s site where he discusses his belief in “promoting a culture of life,” or visit the Encyclopedia Mittanica, where you can scroll down and find Mitt’s answers to just about any question, all neatly alphabetized according to issue.

Warning:  if you take a few minutes to do this - to objectively look at Mitt’s platform and record, you WILL find he is a true Reagan conservative, and you WILL most likely want to join, sign up, contribute, campaign for, blog and in all other ways become a Mitt supporter!  Let us know when you do - we’d love to hear your story!

Ah, THE IRONY: Science, Religion, Abortion, & “FrankenFoods” — Logic of The Liberal Elite

You know how we often hear the term “the liberal elite” which connotes some ivory tower intellectual superiority? It might only be I who thinks such a term is rather an oxymoron. This great article on discoveries in stem cell research reminds me of the same liberal forces of the last two decades that have argued that ending life in the womb is “a right” while at the same time suing drunk drivers that cause accidents resulting in the death of a fetus.

This entire Wall Street Journal Op/Ed piece is outstanding and is a must-read for any conservative. Link —–> Trading Places — Will the secular left soon attack the religious right for being pro-science? — BY JOSEPH BOTTUM

Or, maybe, the argument is just beginning, for this news turns on its head everything in what the nation’s newspapers have delivered to us as a story of blinkered pro-lifers vs. courageous scientists.

The people who turn out actually to have believed in the power of science are the pro-lifers–the ones who said that a moral roadblock is not, in point of fact, an outrageous hindrance, for scientists will always find another, less-objectionable way to achieve their goals. President Bush’s refusal of federal funding for new embryonic stem cell lines didn’t halt major stem-cell advances, any more than the prohibition against life-threatening research on human subjects, such as the infamous Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male, stopped the advance of medical treatments.

For those who attacked the pro-lifers in the name of science, however, things look a little different. As Maureen L. Condic explained to First Thigns readers this year in her careful survey, “What We Know About Embryonic Stem Cells,” the promises of medical breakthroughs were massively overblown by the media.

But there were reasons for all the hype. I have long suspected that science, in the context of the editorial page of the New York Times, was simply a stalking-horse for something else. In fact, for two something-elses: a chance to discredit America’s religious believers, and an opportunity to put yet another hedge around the legalization of abortion. After all, if our very health depends on the death of embryos, and we live in a culture that routinely destroys early human life in the laboratory, no grounds could exist for objecting to abortion.

With these purposes now severed by the Japanese de-differentiation technique, which way will it break?

The answer is, quite possibly, toward a rejection of science by the mainstream press. Since the 1960s, abortion has skewed American politics in strange and unnatural ways, and the cloning debates are no exception. Recently John Tierney of the New York Times had a long article called “Are Scientists Playing God? It Depends on Your Religion.” It’s a little unfortunately timed, given the news from England about Mr. Wilmut’s change of heart, but the theme is that American Christians and European post-Christians are unlike the Chinese, Koreans and other Easterners with no history of opposition to science.

The whole idea seems more than a little peculiar, when one reflects on the birthplaces of modern science. And yet, Mr. Tierney sees something that is, from his perspective, genuinely hard to explain: The left in America and Europe supports destructive embryonic research, while it increasingly rejects genetically modified “Frankenfoods.”

Shake loose from the narrative of antiscience fundamentalists and pro-science liberals, however, and a different story starts to be visible. Abortion skewed the political discussion of all this, pinning the left to a defense of science it doesn’t actually hold. The more natural line is agitation against Frankenfoods and all genetic modification, particularly given the environmentalism to which the campaign against global warming is tying the left.

Narratives about positions on public policy are like enormous steamships: It takes a long time to turn them around. But if the news of stem-cell breakthroughs prove accurate, we may well see over the next few years a gradual reversal in news stories and editorials. Watch for it, now that abortion is out of the equation: much less hype about all the miracle cures that stem cells will bring us, more suspicion about the cancers and genetic pollution that may result, and just about the same amount of bashing of religious believers–this time for their ignorant support of science.

Oh, the wonder of the fluid logic of the elite liberal mind!

Romney, the wife of GOP hopeful Mitt Romney, said the life of a campaign spouse is simply a magnified version of what many women struggle with each day. She acknowledged Edwards’ breast cancer and noted that she suffers from multiple sclerosis.

“At some point, our bodies, as women, finally say ‘Uncle,’” Romney said. I truly believe because we are juggling so many balls all the time, and trying to keep it together, we forget to take care of ourselves.”

“What Women Want — How the GOP can Woo the Ladies”

August 31st, 2007 | 9 Comments | Posted in Democrats, Mitt Romney, Women

Mitt Romney is well known for seeking out and hiring only the brightest people with whom to work. That was true at Bain, the 2002 Winter Olympics, and as governor of Massachusetts. These include some of the brightest women of America (ex: Meg Whitman). I would be very interested to hear from (in Comments) women who have worked for Romney, who work for him now, or who know him well enough to speak on this topic. In the book Turnaround, Romney speaks highly of several talented women who were instrumental in guiding the Olympics out of scandal to outstanding success.

Kimberly Strassel’s article is intriguing as she outlines well how the Republican presidential candidates (interestingly enough, she only mentions Romney & Giuliani) are missing opportunities to capitalize on the Democrats’ worn out marketing messages to women.

These are but three, short excerpts taken from Ms. Strassel’s Op/Ed piece:

A smart Republican candidate would be doing Twister moves to deny Democrats those votes. Yet what’s extraordinary is that no GOP contender has yet recognized the huge opportunity to redefine “women’s” politics for the 21st century. That’s a double failing given that the GOP could win modern women by doing little more than tailoring their beliefs in freer markets to the problems women struggle most with today.
——-
The rest of the female population has migrated into 2007. Undoubtedly quite a few do care about abortion rights and the Violence Against Women Act. But for the 60% of women who today both scramble after a child and hold a job, these culture-war touchpoints aren’t their top voting priority. Their biggest concerns, not surprisingly, hew closely to those of their male counterparts: the war in Iraq, health care, the economy. But following close behind are issues that are more unique to working women and mothers. Therein rests the GOP opportunity.

Here’s an example of how a smart Republican could morph an old-fashioned Democratic talking point into a modern-day vote winner. Ms. Clinton likes to bang on about “inequality” in pay. The smart conservative would explain to a female audience that there indeed is inequality, and that the situation is grave. Only the bad guy isn’t the male boss; it’s the progressive tax code.

Most married women are second-earners. That means their income is added to that of their husband’s, and thus taxed at his highest marginal rate. So the married woman working as a secretary keeps less of her paycheck than the single woman who does the exact same job.
——-
This isn’t to suggest Republicans treat women as a “special interest” or a monolithic bloc. But there are votes to be had for the candidate who owns the quotidian concerns of this population. And there are future generations of women voters to be won by the party that progresses beyond the stale rhetoric of women’s “rights” and crafts a new language of women’s “choice” and “opportunity” and “ownership.”

Come on guys; the women are waiting.

The entire article is worth reading.

“The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance - it is the illusion of knowledge.”

One of Mitt Romney’s Greatest Speeches!

.
Justin Hart over at MyMannMitt posted a great speech by Governor Romney. I have read many of Mitt Romney’s speeches and this one from today ranks at the top in my list of his great ones! Anybody out there who has ever doubted Mitt Romney’s dedication to the protection of the unborn child should doubt no more after reading this. This excerpt below is just the beginning of this wonderful speech. Mitt’s speech was interrupted many times by applause. Please take the three minutes out to read his entire remarks here at ——> MyManMitt.

And remember that not only was Ronald Reagan a Democrat, he was once pro-choice. Some are still saying they would not vote for Mitt Romney because he once viewed this “issue” and stood as pro-choice. Those same people would have never voted for Ronald Reagan either. Please read the entire speech here.

“Thank you Carol. We appreciate your many years of dedicated service to the cause of life.

“I was honored to accept your invitation to address the National Right to Life convention.

I am humbled to be standing among the many who have toiled for the pro-life movement for so long, when I arrived at this place of principle only a few years ago.

“I appreciate the decades of dedication and the effective advocacy of people like Jim Bopp, the Special Adviser to my campaign on life issues.

“I know that it is not time but conviction that unites us.

I proudly follow a long line of converts – George Herbert Walker Bush, Henry Hyde, and Ronald Reagan to name a few.

I am evidence that your work, that your relentless campaign to promote the sanctity of human life, bears fruit.

“Consider the double standard at work here, by the way. When a pro-life figure changes to pro-abortion, they get praised for their courage. But when someone becomes pro-life, the pundits go into high dudgeon.

“And so, I am humbled but also grateful to be welcomed so warmly by so many with whom I share a common dedication.

“Anyone here from the pro-life community in Massachusetts knows they were always welcome in my office when I was Governor. Together we worked arm in arm.

I can promise you this – you will be welcomed, and we will work together, if I’m fortunate enough to be elected President.
