I just got off a call hosted by Spencer Zwick and Mitt Romney. Mitt spoke about why he is suspending his campaign. I took some real-time notes which I’ll just paste below.
I have to admit the fact that Mitt says that he will support John McCain makes me reconsider whether I will support McCain in the general. I agree with Mitt that the war is a critical issue and that the consequences of a Obama or HRC presidency with a Democrat congress on the war would be dire.
All the same, I’m not there yet on McCain. He still needs to earn my vote…but Mitt’s comments pull me closer.

Suspending his campaign because best for country due to war; lots of support and resources, but agree on need to win against violent jihadists and that we need to unify on that vs. the Democrats.
Raised more money than any other Republican campaign.
Thanked Spencer for organizing the financial effort.
Disappointing results in Tuesday for delegates, but have won 11 states, 4M votes total vs. 4.7 for McCain and 2.7 for Huck; strategized future, we have funding and organization;
Objectives 1) do what’s right for the country, 2) become president; different from 1976 when Reagan went all the way to convention because we’re at war and convention fight puts our nominee in a difficult position in raising money, organizing, taking over RNC, and in a time of war doing anything to let HRC or Barak win knowing they would pull our troops is something we cannot do. I don’t like losing and wanted to keep going…very tough decision.
CPAC wanted Mitt to keep going, supporters wanted to stay in. Math makes it a real long shot. VA is an open primary McCain country, KS Brownback endorsed McCain, don’t want to keep going on losing just to force a convention fight. Right thing for the country, party. Thank you finance committee.
I know how hard it is to ask money for guy from massachussetts, mormon, low name recognitions. You fought through McCain, Giuliani, and Thompson. Hard work. We raised 2x McCain. You overdelivered.
Wanted to be able to speak about conservative principles and let know the bad news at end and not have Huck or others front-run our announcement. Told the boys just last night. You counted on me and I did not get the job done. We wanted to win b/c of what the country faces right now. Disagree with McCain on many issues and choice is not that great, but the war is the most important concern and cannot let personal desires get in the way of that.
We’ll still be out there fighting for conservative values that we believe in, just not as visible as we once were.
I hope McCain gets elected because of the war…hard to say, but that’s where we are.
Thank you. Good bye.

Thank you Mitt for everything you did. I, for one, will be here for you come 2012 or in whatever else you pursue and need my support on in the future. We will keep fighting for Reagan Conservatism.
