Joining the Team

July 14th, 2006 | 5 Comments | Posted in Big Dig, Site News

My name is Dave Burris and I will also be joining the team.

I started Delawareans for Mitt in February ‘06 because I believe Mitt Romney is head and shoulders above any other candidate mentioned for President in 2008. His life of executive excellence in the private sector, public sector and sports world is unparalleled. His record of accomplishment in Massachusetts is commendable: turning a $3 billion deficit into surpluses without raising taxes; finding an innovative conservative solution to the healthcare crisis; and making Massachusetts tops in the nation in education. He is a visionary and a doer; a man of accomplishment.

I look forward to joining with you to elect Mitt Romney the next President of the United States.

Introducing Myself

July 14th, 2006 | 5 Comments | Posted in Site News

Hello fellow Romney supporters!

My name is Chris Kopchak, and I would like to introduce myself as the newest contributor to this blog! I wish to personally thank Ann Marie for all of her hard work and dedication in making this blog such a success, and allowing myself to be a part of it!

I am a fairly new Romney supporter, but as a big time believer in Republican politics, I feel as he is the right man for the job in 2008. I have done extensive research on his history and policies, and I like everything I have seen.

I look forward to contributing to this blog for years to come!
Feel free to email me at ANY time. I am always willing to help….

Chris

From Iowans for Romney . . .

A new Iowa 2008 GOP presidential blog has hit the scene: The Caucus Cooler (catchy, eh?) promises to be source of great information for the 2008 presidential raceIn their “The Cooler Line” they have Romney as the odds-on favorite to win the Iowa Caucus at 2-1 odds. They also have an interesting poll (further down on the right) asking who will pull out of the race after their poor showing in Iowa. I voted for Romney a couple of times before I really read the question! . . . so weigh in with who you think will drop out first.

Iowa’s most active conservative political blog “The Krusty Konservative” has recently introduced “Krusty’s Six Pack” stating:

“Today’s Six Pack is the first of many that will look at who are the Top three Republican 08ers in Iowa. To complete the Six Pack the other is filled with three 08ers we need to keep our eyes on.”

And, guess who tops his list too . . . Romney again!

Some other stuff:

Again, McCain reminds us all why he lost the support of the conservative base and subsequently lost in 2000. Looks like he hasn’t learned from his past mistakes.

Romney helped raise $70,000 at a fundraiser for Arkansas gubernatorial nominee, Asa Hutchinson, and Giuliani is following suit.

And what would a day be without the obligatory addressing of the Romney/Mormon issue? Hearkening back to the 1960 presidential campaign:

Everyone knew if Kennedy were elected, the Pope would be running the country. If you didn’t know, it was pointed out to you from the pulpit every Sunday. What to do?
The solution for a lot of fundamentalist Christians was not to vote for Kennedy. They voted for Vice President Lyndon Johnson. . . .
It might have been the last election in which the choice of vice-president mattered. Without Johnson on the ticket, Kennedy could not have won. It was also the last election in which the religion of a presidential candidate was an issue. Until now.

I’ve wondered before: If Romney manages to get the GOP nomination without capturing much of the south would he pick a running mate like Huckabee (or Allen, or Jeb Bush) to help appease fears of southern social conservatives? Could be interesting.
He finishes his article:

The Democrats have learned they can’t win the presidency without the South. Take away southern governors (Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton), the Democrats are 0-7 in presidential elections since 1968.In 2008 the South will be given a choice. McCain? Not likely. Giuliani? Maybe he’s just a little too liberal. George Allen? Could be the worst presidential candidate since Phil Gramm. That could leave Romney as the last best hope for the Christian Right. If they can get by that Mormon thing.

Interesting take.

For anyone who’s into online polls voting for Romney, here’s a list of some active ones:

Iowa sites:
The Krusty Konservative
The Caucus Cooler (don’t forget to not vote for Romney at this one since that would mean you think he will be the first to drop out after the Iowa Caucuses).
Watersblogged! (may have to scroll down quite a way if you use IE instead of Firefox as your browser)

Others:
Citizen Outreach (click on “Survey Says!”)
Straw Poll 2008 (with an overall running poll, a daily poll, and a junk poll-unlimited amounts of votes and some Allen supporter went crazy with a couple of weeks back)
The Next Prez

Most of these polls let you vote in them daily.

Let me know if there are other polls out there to which I should call attention . . . just comment here below.

P.S. And don’t forget to sign up for the discussion forum, a new feature that Ann Marie has added in the last week or so.

Main Elect Romney in 2008 Site Up, and other misc. issues.

July 9th, 2006 | 4 Comments | Posted in Site News

The main Elect Romney in 2008 site is up. At this point it’s pretty sparse in content, a welcome message, a combination bio/my impressions, and a few quotes but it’s a start. I plan on adding some things to it that are a little more “off the beaten path” so to speak as I expand it.

I am working on getting everything viewable left justified through all browsers (the blog entries can now be viewed as they are supposed to appear). The side bar is another issue, but I should have that fixed within the next couple of days.

I have also added a page of links, so if you don’t want to scroll all the way down the side bar to view them you don’t have to. Also added is a forum. I have it set that only registered and approved users can use it. I want it to be a place of serious discussion, and not a place for trolls or spammers. Please register, and contribute to the discussion. I have also linked to Jeff Fuller’s blogger profile, as well as an unofficial calendar of Romney events. Feel free to check it out, and see if Governor Romney will be coming to your city or town soon.

On a final note, I am looking for other bloggers to contribute to this site. If it is of interest to you, please send me an email with reasons why.

If anyone has any other suggestions to improve the site feel free to email me at the link to the right.

~~~Happy Birthday Elect Romney in 2008~~~
One year ago today I began “Elect Romney in 2008 - A blog for the discussion of our next President, Mitt Romney”. Boy what a year makes. If you click the link above it’ll take you to the very first post here. It describes speculation about whether Governor Romney was going to run for President. In that not much has changed in the past year. But, in so many other ways things have indeed changed. The Governor has decided not to run for re-election for Governor of the state of Massachusetts. He is criss-cross-ing the country now more than ever, and he’s ranked #2 by the National Journal.
Who would have thought that he’d make it this far in one short year? Me of course, I say that in a kind of joking way but there is a hint of seriousness in the statement as well. I have thought from the very beginning when I started researching him, and deciding who to support for 2008 that Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts was going to be it. He has proven that point to me over and over again in the past year, from his consistent talk of budgetary discipline to his hallmark signing of Health Care Reform. Time will only tell whether he runs for President, but my bet is that he will. And when all is said and done on the night of November 4th, 2008 we’ll be watching President-Elect Mitt Romney give his acceptance speech for President of the United States of America. What exciting days/weeks/months/years lie ahead.
The Very Model Of A Modern Major General? - Major News About This Blog!
This “Hotline on Call” blog entry talks about the Alexa rankings of the major Campaign sites.
I’ll highlight a portion of it here:
In lieu of last week’s YearlyKos netroots buzzfest, it might be useful to see which candidates actually get the most traffic on their Web sites. According to data from an Alexa.com, on which users can track and compare web site traffic, Clark and Kerry come out on top in the last three months out of all the potential ‘08 presidential candidates:
Site — Internet Ranking
Clark’s WesPAC — 71,158
JohnKerry.com — 76,436
Edwards’ OneAmericaCommittee.com — 211,756
Gingrich’s Newt.org — 229,197
blog.electromneyin2008.com — 238,200
HillaryClinton.com (re-election site) — 253,280
Frist’s VolPAC — 255,254
Emphasis above is that of Ann Marie Curling.
This site that you are reading is the #5 ranked political site of all. It’s still the #1 “non-official site”.
Finally, Romney’s own Commonwealth PAC was so low that it didn’t even make Alexa’s rankings. This is in part because the PAC only recently launched, so take a look at the most popular draft site on the internet according to Alexa. It gets more traffic than any other Republican site except for Newt.org. We’ll have to check back in a few months to see how his Commonwealth PAC is doing, especially in comparison to the unofficial Draft Romney site.
I’m absolutely flattered at all the traffic that all of you bring to the site over and over again. I do wish the Commonwealth PAC well though. And hopefully soon they will be ranked by Alexa.
My visit with the next President of the United States, Governor Mitt Romney
Ann Marie Curling & Governor Mitt Romney
Ann Marie Curling & Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts
It’s not every day that you get the chance to meet the next President of the United States, but on Saturday in Des Moines Iowa that’s just what I did. I left the day before at around 10:30AM after picking up my rental car from Enterprise. The trip was fairly boring with the exception of passing by Ronald W. Reagan’s boyhood home in Eureka, IL. I arrived in Iowa around 7:15PM that night and met Jeff Fuller from Iowans for Romney as well as his family.
After not much sleep I awoke at 4:20AM to get ready for the breakfast at the Iowa State Republican Convention. We arrived a bit early, so we were able to secure a table in the front of the room. You could tell that he was visibly tired, but that would be expected considering he was in Idaho the previous night giving a talk to the Idaho State Republican Convention. Not to mention that he had two meetings prior to the breakfast. He arrived in the room (and walked right past our table) and stood there with his wife and son, and patiently waited for Doug Gross to finish his warm up speech. A few people took pictures of them while they waited.
After Doug Gross’s introduction he arrived on stage to a roaring round of applause from the at this point standing room only crowd. Despite his tiredness he spoke with eloquence and wit. This speech was different than most that I had watched on C-Span, in that he spoke longer with more topics. He did use his familiar humor stories, including the one where he speaks of himself being on the front page of the sports section and his lack of athletic ability. He goes on to say that his sons had to call him up and tell him about it.
Governor Romney spoke on several topics including the war in Iraq and the need to keep fighting against the Jihadists. The room applauded loudly when he spoke about those topics, as well as when he later mentioned our brave men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He also mentioned our need to compete in a global economy; saying that the Europeans and Asians were doing a better job at education than we are here. He said that China graduates 7 times the amount of engineers than we do here in the US with them graduating 24,900 to our 4,400. He then went on to say that we need to raise the bar in education especially in the area of technology. He said one area that we need to especially focus on are scholarships of merit like the John and Abigail Adams Scholarships in Massachusetts that gives a full paid scholarship to the top 25% of all High School Graduates. Another thing he added is that in terms of immigration we don’t need to be sending top graduates who’ve come to America to get an education back to their own countries after achieving receiving their degrees. That we should be employing them here and helping us expand and grow as a country.
The part that impressed me the most about the speech was when he talked about reigning in spending in Washington and bringing about fiscal discipline. That we need to decrease the borrowing of money, not increase taxes, but reduce government spending. This goes right along with what he’s already done in the state of Massachusetts. He then went on to say that our country needs a Presidential line item veto, and that we need to decrease our strong dependence on foreign oil. That we need to be investing in new fuels like liquefied coal, nuclear energy, effective energy, fuel efficient cars, and renewable fuels.
Culture was a large theme of the talk. He talked about liberty, opportunity, sacrifice, hard work, belief in a purpose driven life (he cited the book of the same name), a belief in something greater than us, respect for human life, and the family. He talked of “Great Necessities requiring Great Virtues”.
He discussed marriage being for the nurturing and development of children. During this part of the talk the crowd erupted in a thunderous applause. He went on to say that he has great optimism about our world, and the future.
He ended the talk with the now familiar story (it’s included in his book “Turnaround” detailing his job as CEO of the SLOC) of having to choose who would sit with Vice President Dick Cheney during the closing ceremonies of the Salt Lake Olympics in 2002. He chose Derek Parra the fastest man in the world on skates. Romney went on to say that when asked what the most meaningful part of being part of the Olympics, Parra said it was being able to carry the American Flag that had flown over the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 into the opening ceremonies. He was one of eight chosen to be honored to do this job. Romney said he expected that when it entered the stadium that the crowd would cheer wildly, but that it didn’t happen. He said there was complete silence. And after Robert Shaw sang the national anthem a gust of wind picked up the flag. It was obviously a very poignant moment for Romney.
During the speech Romney had his wife Ann and son Josh spoke. A very human story that Josh related to the audience was how recently his father had sat for an hour and read to his daughter the same story over and over again. It was particularly touching in that it showed just how human he is.
Here is a copy in PDF form of one of the brochures that were available at the breakfast.
After the talk Elizabeth Mehren of the Los Angeles Times interviewed me about my blog and my feelings about Governor Romney and his chances in the 2008 race. It was a nice interview, and I was able to get across several of my feelings about Governor Romney.
I also was able to shake Ann Romney’s hand, and introduce myself. She said that she knew who I was. That was pretty neat. I also was able to meet briefly with Julie Teer and Sally Canfield, two people involved with Governor Romney’s Commonwealth PAC. Also, several of us spoke to Josh Romney. We discussed the fact that his wife is due to have their third child soon, and I was able to convey to him that I felt that the third child was the toughest in that you only have two hands and two parents.
We were then scheduled to meet personally with Governor Romney for 11:40AM; we had a couple of hours before that so we walked around the convention floor. They had several booths set up for different candidates so it was nice to get to know some of those people. I also got the opportunity to speak with Senator Grassley of Iowa, in which I mentioned CF funding and wanting to get some. He mentioned that the University of Iowa was doing CF research, and that I should check into the NIH to see what kind of study dollars they were using for CF research. I had the ability to pass out my card to several Iowans at the convention while waiting for the meeting with Governor Romney. Also, I was able to meet with Doug Gross the head man for the Iowa affiliate of The Commonwealth PAC. I had a picture taken with him.
The time came to meet with Governor Romney, and we were ushered into this conference room. We were offered hot chocolate, water, coffee (for the non-LDS he said), and donuts. We sat around this square conference table and we went around the table introducing ourselves and telling why we felt that Romney should run for President. When it came to my time I told him about my blog, how long I’ve been doing it, and the fact that I felt that he was the person for the job especially because of his Health Care Initiative, his ability to work with both sides of the aisle and the fact that I felt that he had the fiscal discipline to cleanup the mess in Washington. He asked about my children (since he knew of their challenges), and I told him their names and ages. At the end of the meeting he signed two of our “Turnaround” books detailing his leadership of the SLOC. He signed mine, “Ann Marie - Thank You for Your Extraordinary Help! What a Friend! Mitt Romney, June 17, 2006”
Then we were granted pictures with the Governor. Both Jeff and I had one taken together with Romney, and I had another taken individually with just Romney and myself. After the picture he shook my hand and said that he’d been praying for my kids. That especially touched me.
Destination Iowa - Mission To Meet Governor Mitt Romney
Today will be the last day I blog from home here in Kentucky until probably Monday. Tomorrow I will take off for Iowa where as Jeff posted in a previous message he and I will get to meet personally with Mr. Romney. I’ll be staying with Jeff in advance of the meeting, and we plan to try and blog together tomorrow night. I have been trying for a couple of months to make this a reality, and finally everything has fallen into place so that it is. After the meeting I plan to offer insight about the man who shall be our next President. I keep hearing that he’s “the real deal”, and I look forward to seeing that personally. Look for blogs over the weekend about it all.
Looks like The Boston Globe is reading US!
As those of you who read this blog already knew, Mr. Romney went to Iraq last month and gave an Air Force’s C-130 pilot his personal coin. The Boston Globe has come around to writing about this story now, and mentions what was already stated right here.
Thanks to Jeff who was right on the story, and Captain Jay the pilot who received the coin who then emailed me personally with the photos of the personal coin Mr. Romney had given him.
Here’s the snippet from The Boston Globe’s article about it.
Romney took the coins with him on his tour of Iraq and Afghanistan last month. “Captain Jay,” the pilot of the C-130 that flew Romney into Baghdad — who also happens to be blogger for Newsday — wrote that as he disembarked, Romney gave him his “personal coin.”
“I wished him `Good Luck in ‘08,’ ” the pilot wrote, “and we went our separate ways.”
As regular readers of this blog know, I have had serious problems with spam on this site. It’s gotten to the point where I have decided to by default close down comments. Today I have opened up comments on the top three blogs listed, and I will leave them that way for a week or so (unless they get spammed), and then I’ll go ahead and close them down to comments again. I know that this curtails some banter. I had to decide for the sake of the blog, and it’s seriousness whether to just let the spam continue, or to cut it off at the knees. I decided on the latter. I have contemplated getting another software, but unless one of you have a remarkable solution that guarantees my google, yahoo, and msn rankings (that are all currently on the first page for just about every “Romney” search term) I am stuck with it. Anyway, didn’t mean to turn this into a novel. I just wanted to make those aware who have emailed me about it why the comments function was turned off.
A Note
March 30th, 2006 | 6 Comments | Posted in Announcements, Site News
I’m sorry that the blog went dormant (just like I didn’t want to happen), but before I had the chance to get Ryan K. all set up my daughter was lifeflighted by helicopter to a hospital 5 hours from our home. I won’t go into a lot of details, other than to say she was recently diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, and it’s just been an overwhelmingly difficult experience. I’m hoping to catch up on the blog over the next few days, and get everything back to where it was. Please have patience :)
Site Mentioned On FoxNews
Romney Fox News
Elect Romney in 2008 on FoxNews.
I’m not really into attention like this (the point to this site is to promote Mr. Romney, and for that I am grateful to be of service to him) but, every once in a while it makes me feel good to know that all this work that I’ve been doing for the past almost ten months is being noticed by others. If you go to the foxnews site and click on video (it’s on the top red bar of the page), then click on tech, there is a story about cyberpolitics. In the story it shows this site, and mentions it.
I really do thank you for continuing to visit, and learn more about Mr. Romney.
