Heartland Democrats for Mitt Romney

The following comment was left by Cher, a visitor to this blog. Her comment was left this afternoon on Ann Marie’s post of a month ago here, about the California wildfires.

As we have mentioned in the past, one of the reasons Reagan (as a strong conservative) was elected with a mandate in his first term was due in large measure by the moderate Democrats who voted for him. I believe that a large percentage of Democrats will vote for Governor Romney if he is the nominee and not at all because of their perception that he is somehow liberal on the issues. It will be because of his principled character and overall integrity.

Our prayers go out to all of the people effected by the fires in Southern California including all of the Romney family, some not mentioned. We pray that all of them are safe or have taken to cleaner Michigan air.

I also wanted to share this interesting little tid-bit. My parents, who live in Northern Minnesota and have always been very Democratic, told me the other day that this will be the first time in their 77 year life that they would be voting Republican if Romney is on the ballot. This was a huge statement for them to make and I know it was a very long thought out decision.

Lifelong Democrat Praises Romney

Okay, I realize some of you may have seen this video clip. But many of you have not. When David Kim posted this clip, he had been a blogger on this site for only days. In my opinion, this single video clip, though short is one of the best unscripted pieces promoting Mitt Romney that I have seen in all of 2007.

Jim Cramer (wikipedia) is so exuberant and so effusive about Romney that Chris Matthews seems like he wants to change the subject and simply cannot get him off the topic of Romney! Please forgive me for again hi-lighting this video clip from June 2nd. I am guessing that this impromptu testimonial of Mitt Romney probably converted thousands of fence-sitters to support the Mitt. Jim Cramer loves Romney!

Ever watch Mad Money? Jim Cramer, it’s hyper-caffeinated and hyperbolic host comes out strong for Mitt in this video. Some choice quotes:

“He’s the best businessman in North America, and that’s how you should think of him!”

“Romney is a guy who would say…we’re going to be a growth nation again! Romney is the guy who favors growth!”

“Romney understands business, he understands taxes, he understand capital creation!”

All this from a lifelong Democrat! Shows that Romney has cross-over appeal. We’ve got to get him the nomination!

“Romney Democrats?” . . . it’s already happening

May 20th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Iowa, Romney Democrats

Some more interesting details from the new Iowa poll that Thomas linked to below(I’ve got some more commentary on that over at Iowans for Romney).

Remember the “Reagan Democrats” that helped Ronnie to landslide victories? Be prepared for a lot of “Romney Democrats”!!

Romney’s still a relative unknown to many . . . but he’s already got equal or greater crossover support from Democrats here in Iowa than anyone else. McCain, Romney, and Obama all have about 15% of those of the opposing party ready to vote for them. Giuliani is lower at 13%. Hillary would only be able to poach 6% of Republicans at the caucus.

So, don’t worry too much about Romney’s “electability” (or worse, don’t feel compelled to vote for the wrong candidate just because of some unproved, but assumed theory that they will have a better chance in the general election. Reagan was a conservative who loved America and exuded optimism . . . sounds like Romney!!!) Iowa is not just the first primary state, but it’s the first caucus in the general election and a swing state to boot. Romney vs. Hillary here would be a beautiful thing to keep Iowa Red next presidential election!!

Another “Romney Democrat” Locks In to Support GMR

May 15th, 2007 | 3 Comments | Posted in Character, Romney Democrats

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting a colleague from the same business industry of my career. Since that time, we have had lunch a couple of times. I learned he is a Democrat and staunch supporter of Governor Romney. I asked Brett if he would provide his statement of support to publish here. He agreed. This is his statement in full and unedited:

I am a registered Democrat and have no intention of changing my party affiliation. However, if Gov. Mitt Romney becomes the republican nominee, I will be placing my vote for him. Some of the reasons for this decision include:

1. Hes an individual of extreme intelligence.
As President, we need a person who can understand and articulate, with clarity, the issues we face as Americans and provide substantive solutions based on whats good for the countrys present and future. Im convinced Mr. Romney fully meets this standard.

2. He has a proven track record as a problem solver.
In all areas of his career (entrepreneur, President/CEO of the SLC Organizing Committee or Governor of Massachusetts), his success or failure was based on his ability to identify problems and solutions, to develop a course of action, to execute this plan and then evaluate the results. Im not going to re-state his career accomplishments; however Mr. Romney has shown an impressive ability at taking over difficult circumstances and providing leadership that results in significant improvements.

3. Im partial to candidates that have had success outside of politics compared to the career politicians.
As Governor of Massachusetts, he has a successful track record in politics. However, Mr. Romneys accomplishments are not limited to the world of politics (successful entrepreneur, President and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, etc). His talents, skills and experience at leading change provided him financial success in business. It is much more impressive to me to see how hes applied this leadership experience in other areas, including but not limited to, politics. In my opinion, the results have been exceptional.

4. He has a high level of honor and integrity.
A number of years ago, my father worked on a committee with Mr. Romney (long before he was Governor). My father (being a liberal Democrat) didnt agree with Mr. Romney on many topics. However, to this day, my father has an overwhelming amount of respect for Mr. Romney. My father remembers that there were times where they completely disagreed on an issue and, later on, Mr. Romney learned that he was wrong. When this happened, Mr. Romney couldve saved personal embarrassment by either not letting others know or by speaking to my father in private. However, Mr. Romney always had the integrity to discuss the matter openly in front of the committee. In my fathers opinion, Mr. Romney did this because he felt that it was most important that the committee understood the issues and facts correctly, so they could make the best decisions possible. Mr. Romney did so, even if there was the possibility of embarrassment due to an admission of being wrong.

The issues that we deal with today are ever changing and becoming more complex. We need someone that has the personal conviction of what he stands for, but also has the humility and integrity to be willing to change for the better of those they represent.

5. We need a uniter, not a divider.
I feel strongly that another polarizing figure is the last thing we need as in the Oval Office. In dealing with domestic and international issues, we need someone that has the ability to work with opposing sides to get things done, while having the personal conviction to make difficult decisions, for the good of all. My opinion is that Mr. Romneys track record shows he clearly has these qualities.

6. Do I think Ill agree with every decision hell make as President?
No. Do I have trust in him as the best person to make decisions based on whats good for the country (both present and future)? Absolutely.

Brett Gilliland lives with his wife and son in Orange, California. As a child he lived with his family in Massachusetts where his father knew Mitt Romney.

Are You a “Romney Democrat”? Why?

April 7th, 2007 | Comments Off | Posted in Character, Romney Democrats

Those of us who have carefully studied Mitt Romney’s extraordinary experiences of leadership understand why he is the obvious best choice as the next President of the United States.

When Ronald Reagan ran for president, he had an unprecedented number of Democrats that enthusiastically supported, promoted, and voted for him. They were affectionately referred to as the “Reagan Democrats.”

If you are a Democrat and have come to the same conclusion as the rest of us — that is that Mitt Romney is the obvious best person to lead this country at this critical juncture in America’s history, I would like to know how you arrived at that conclusion and why you decided to back Governor Romney.

Please provide a brief reason by clicking the “Leave a Comment” below. It is very easy. To get an idea of what a fellow Democrat wrote previously, click here:

ANOTHER “ROMNEY DEMOCRAT”

This is just one example.

I hope to compile these comments and post them again in the near future as prominent blog post.

If you are a Republican or Independent, please ask your Democrat friends to visit this site and help them understand why they want to be on the winning team for the 2008 presidential elections. Also, others have commented that Libertarians would likely find a lot in common with Mitt Romney on a number of positions; tell your Libertarian friends too.

All of us bloggers here at ElectRomneyIn2008 look forward to your comments. THANK YOU very much for taking time out to articulate why, as a Democrat, you have decided to back Mitt Romney.

Another “Romney Democrat”

April 6th, 2007 | 5 Comments | Posted in Abortion, Romney Democrats

It is great to find these little gems from Democrats. I am starting to see a lot more Democrats backing GMR. It reminds me so much of the mounting support of Democrats for Ronald Reagan.

This comment was posted at Amazon under one of the reviews for the Hewitt book:

“Mr. Close,

Since when did it become a sin (or just wrong) to change one’s mind? Simply because Mitt Romney has changed to a more pro-life position, simply shows he has grown over the years into a very intelligent, faithful member of his church (and a person who, unlike most other politicians) lives his beliefs, which is proven by being married 38 years and having a very loving and devoted family. I lived in Michigan when his father was governor (I’m a Democrat) and he was an incredible governor and would have made a great president. I’m very hopeful that Mitt Romney will run and most importantly, that he will WIN the GOP candidacy — he’s fair, honest, and stands for what he believes in, which is highly unusual in politics these days.

Hopefully, Governor Romney will be our next president!

Respectfully,

Diane Thompson”
