Michael Steele: “I am a Pro Life Catholic”

There has been talk in some circles that Michael Steele, the Chairman of the RNC, isn’t conservative enough for their tastes. Here is a YouTube vid showing a Michael Steele/Chris Wallace interview where Mr. Steele unequivocally states that “I am a Pro Life Catholic” and takes other conservative stands that should put to rest the idea that Mr. Steele is “squishy” on certain issues very important to us in the center-right area of the political spectrum.

RNC Chairman Michael Steele Delivers Weekly Republican Address

February 7th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in Michael Steele, Mitt Romney, RNC Chair, comMITTedtoromney

Michael, “The Man of Steele”, has come out of the blocks very fast and has already made a road trip to three states where he thinks the Dems are most vulnerable and now he has up and running what he calls the RNC eCampaign, a weekly email contact with the party’s foot soldiers. I can feel a new excitement within the ranks of the Party and it looks like Michael Steele’s election as the new head of the RNC was an out of the park homerun.

I would like to embed his weekly videos here, because this site is becoming a hotbed for the resurgence of the “Republican Wing of the Republican Party.”

Kudos to everyone of our commenters on this site who have joined their local Republican organizations, provided links to videos and articles and who have been so active on the chatbox, which has contributed greatly to the sense of community. I feel a palpable sense of positive momentum here and I want to express my thanks to all of you and the wonderful job you have done as grassroots activists.

Fight for the RNC Chairmanship Heats Up

The field for RNC chair has gotten crowded and it seems that former Mike Huckabee campaign manager, Chip Saltsman, in an attempt to stand out in the crowd, may have foul-balled his chance at becoming the next head of the GOP, by sending a controversial satirical CD to RNC committee members.

Susan Davis reports on politics.

The six-way race for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee is intensifying as some party members are pushing to hold a preemptive meeting in early January to screen the candidates, according to the Washington Times.

However, one of the candidates, Chip Saltsman, the former presidential campaign manager for Mike Huckabee, may have made a fatal move in his bid after The Hill newspaper reported today that Saltsman sent a 41-track parody CD to the RNC’s 168 member committee that includes a song entitled “Barack the Magic Negro.”

The song, to the music of “Puff the Magic Dragon,” was first popularized on Rush Limbaugh’s conservative radio show. It was written by Saltman’s pal and conservative satirist Paul Shanklin.

The “We Hate the USA” parody CD also includes satirical songs such as “Wright place, wrong pastor,” a reference to President-elect Barack Obama’s controversial former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., and “The Star Spanglish Banner.”

“Paul Shanklin is a long-time friend, and I think that RNC members have the good humor and good sense to recognize that his songs for the Rush Limbaugh show are light-hearted political parodies,” Saltsman told The Hill.

Maybe. Or Maybe Saltman’s gag gift will turn off committee members mindful of the fact the party is losing support among minorities and that mocking Obama—with high approval ratings and today listed as the most admired American—may not be the best way to give the GOP that more “inclusive” vibe it’s been searching for since their November losses.

Prospective GOP party leaders may also want to leave the word “negro” in any context to conservative satirists and not tie it to the national party committee–good satire rarely translates in to smart politics.

The potential for further discord was highlighted in today’s Washington Times, which notes that a “power struggle” is playing out behind the scenes as some RNC members are advocating for a special session on Jan. 6 to hear presentations from all six current candidates. The RNC is currently scheduled to pick the next party chair at their winter meeting three weeks after the proposed session.

They include Saltsman, current RNC Chair Mike Duncan, South Carolina GOP Party Chairman Katon Dawson, Michigan GOP Party Chairman Saul Anuzis, former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell.

The special session is seen as a move to level the playing field for all candidates and dilute any influence President George W. Bush’s political machine still holds at the RNC. The Washington Times reports that state party chairs from California and North Dakota are agitating for a special session, among others.

Romney’s Role In The RNC Race

Interesting article gossiping about a possible Romney role in the selection of one of his allies as the next chair of the RNC. If this story is true, IMHO, it lends further credence to Gov. Romney’s continued interest in making another run in 2012.

http://thephoenix.com/BLOGS/talkingpolitics/archive/2008/11/14/romney-s-role-in-the-rnc-race.aspx

It now appears true that Fred Thompson really does want to be chair of the Republican National Committee; Thompson obviously doesn’t expect to do any actual work, so the quickly-travelling rumor is that Thompson plans to run as a team with Chuck Yob, long-time political kingpin in Michigan, with Thompson taking a more ceremonial “general chair” title, and Yob actually running the operation.

I can only hope this rumor is true; this could turn the RNC chair battle into a very ugly — and entertaining — affair.

As you might imagine, 2012 GOP Presidential hopefuls have a significant interest in who gets picked to head up the party. I assume — as do others here and there in the rumormongering biz — that Mitt Romney is behind the candidacy of Michigan Chair Saul Anuzis. (Mike Huckabee has a horse in the race: his former campaign manager Chip Saltsman. Other potential nominees have surrogates in the mix as well.)

You can probably guess that Thompson is not a big fan of our former governor, because of the way reporters were talking about how all of the GOP candidates hated the Mittster. One particular sign was that, after it was clear that he was out of contention, Thompson remained in the Presidential race through the Florida primary in what seemed like a deliberate strategy to draw conservative votes from Romney and help his buddy McCain win that crucial state.

Oh, but that’s nothing compared to the enmity between Romney and the aforementioned Yob. Yob headed up McCain’s Michigan campaign in the primary against Romney. But that’s just the latest. I highly recommend this account (in the second half of the article) of how Yob prevented Mitt’s brother Scott from becoming the state’s Attorney General in 1998. That was four years after Yob helped defeat Scott’s wife Ronna Romney in the Republican primary for US Senate. Do you think Mitt remembers that kind of thing?

You’ll also get a flavor from that 2006 story of how much love is not lost between Anuzis and Yob. Since then, Yob attempted to oust Anuzis as Michigan party chair — Anuzis not only beat down the attempt, but then helped oust Yob from his post as Michigan’s RNC National Committeeman, which he had held for eight years.
