Email your friends and family to encourage them to vote for Mitt!

February 1st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in 2008, Mitt Romney, Mitt Romney, Request for Help

Person-to-person outreach is so important to get people to vote for Mitt. A recommendation from someone they know and trust can be pivotal for individuals who haven’t been following the campaigns and don’t know much about the issues.

Below is an excellent email a friend of mine sent around to her circle of friends and family. It’s very concise, friendly, but also direct and convincing. Feel free to use and tailor for your own friends. Please reach out to everyone you know and tell them you are supporting Mitt and ask them to vote for him on Super Tuesday!

Help Mitt by making a donation!

************************************

Hi all,

First of all, I write this as a concerned mom of 2 — going on 3. I really should be going to bed, but this is something that is very important to me.

Sadly, today I was surprised to find that one of our friends didn’t really know who to vote for and thought she might vote for Hillary. Why? Well, because… she’s a woman? Whoa! Let’s make a conscious effort to know the candidates and their positions on the issues that will affect our families, our country, our health, and yes–even our bank accounts!!

Just in case you are–or aren’t–following the elections, this Tuesday, Feb. 5 will be crucial. As many of you already know, I’m leaning heavily toward Gov. Mitt Romney for his stance on family values and traditional conservative economic values. But it doesn’t just take anyone to believe in these issues. Mitt has had over 25 years of extraordinarily successful experience in the business world and is THE CANDIDATE to put ideas into ACTION. He’s done it at the Salt Lake City Olympics, and he’s done it as governor of Massachusetts.

So what issues are important to you?

1. Do you believe in a child’s right to life?
2. Do you believe marriage is between a man and a woman?
3. Do you believe government taxes us too much and spends wastefully?
4. Do you think we need to defend ourselves against terrorists?
5. Do you believe that we should secure our borders and not create a free-for-all for illegal immigrants?
6. Do you want lower taxes–for everyone?
7. Do you want someone in the White House who can not only talk, but get the job done?

If you answer yes to these questions, join with me on Super Tuesday and vote for Mitt Romney to win the Republican nomination! He’s our best chance!

And in case you missed the GOP debate tonight, PLEASE SPEND a COUPLE OF MINUTES on this link. It is well worth your time: https://www.mittromney.com/News/Debates/California

Fellow friends, BE INFORMED!!
Best wishes and God bless you all,

Why I am supporting Mitt Romney for President

As we approach the primary voting season, there are more and more new folks finding their way to our humble blog. The information I found on this blog was extremely helpful to me as I assessed the various candidates in search of “the One.” As such, I thought it would be fitting for me to share why I am a staunch supporter of Governor Mitt Romney in his run for the White House.

In a nutshell, Mitt Romney is the only “full-spectrum” Conservative who can rally the support of all three wings of the Reagan coalition, namely, Social, Economic, and Foreign Policy Conservatives.

For a full treatment of Mitt Romney’s positions, I would refer you to his comprehensive policy book “Vision for a Strong America.” Let me summarize here, however, the highlights across the major issues:

Foreign Policy
o War against Islamic Fascism: We are engaged in a multi-front war which will require using all of our military, economic, and diplomatic might to win; we must defeat the terrorists and those who aid and abet them as well as help the Muslim people enter the 21st century (click here and here)
o Iraq and Afghanistan: The surge is working and we must do what it takes to help Iraq and Afghanistan become stable democratic allies in the war on Islamic Fascism and support our troops (click here and here)
o Iran: Iran must not be allowed to become a nuclear state; diplomacy and economic sanctions are critical, but may not be enough; the military option must remain on the table (click here)
o Military: Need to increase defense spending to a minimum of 4% of GDP to make sure our armed forces have the equipment they need in the field and the support the need back home; the best ally of peace is a strong America (click here and here)

Economic Policy
o Taxes: We need to keep the Bush tax cuts permanent, eliminate the Death Tax, and cut taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest to zero for the Middle Class (click here, and here)
o Spending: We need to restrain Federal spending and close the deficit; will veto any budget where non-defense discretionary spending growth exceeds inflation minus 1%; Need to give the President a line-item veto; Strong track record of financial management from Massachusetts where he closed a $3B deficit and turned it into a $1B surplus without raising taxes; carry out a comprehensive review of government spending to increase efficiency and effectiveness (click here and here)
o Entitlements reform: Maintain benefits for current Seniors, but institute fundamental reforms combining slowing the rate of increase for benefits based on income, extending the retirement age, individual retirement accounts, and no tax increases (click here)
o Healthcare: Mitt Romney is the only candidate on either side of the aisle who implemented a universal health care plan; He covered all of the citizens of Massachusetts using market-based insurance without raising taxes; Governor Romney advocates a Federalist state-by-state approach to make health insurance more affordable for everyone (click here)
o Globalization: Continue to trade around the world but make sure we negotiate level playing fields in foreign markets and upgrade American competitiveness through investments in education and innovation (click here and here)

Culture and Values
o Illegal immigration: Control the border first and turn of the “magnets” that attract illegal immigrants by implementing an employment verification system, no special path for illegal immigrants to become citizens (i.e. no amnesty), no sanctuary cities, increased enforcement by local police agencies (click here, here, and here)
o Traditional marriage: In favor of amending the constitution to keep marriage defined as between a man and a woman; fought the Massachusetts Supreme Court to prevent the state from becoming a destination for same-sex couples looking for marriage licenses (click here and here and here)
o Life: Much has been made of Governor Romney’s switch from being Pro-Abortion to Pro-Life; This is a critical issue for me; I have heard many times why he made this change, and I believe him; I believe that Mitt Romney will fight for the rights of the unborn and be a great leader in supporting Life (click here, here, and here)

The choice of a nominee and President, however, is not strictly a “right-brained” decision based on policy statements and positions. There needs to be something inspirational about a candidate whether it’s the way that they speak to a crowd, interact one on one, or something about their personal story that sets them apart.

Experiencing Mitt through articles and videos really helped seal the deal for me. Below, I have listed some of what I would consider the best of the best articles and videos that helped me come to the decision to support Mitt actively. I’m sure I’m missing some great material, but there is a lot down below. I would encourage you to click through as much of this as you can, and if you have a favorite that wasn’t listed, please leave a link in the comments!

Key videos, speeches, appearances, and articles:
Articles
o Romney to the Rescue (Newsmax) – Great overview of Mitt Romney
o National Review’s endorsement of Mitt Romney
o The House that Mitt Built (Private Equity International) – Behind the scenes view of how Mitt ran Bain Capital and his leadership style
o The Making of Mitt Romney (Boston Globe) – Reasonably balanced biography of each of the major phases of Mitt’s life starting from his youth through today
o Consultant in Chief (Wall Street Journal) – Interview of Mitt where he talks about how he would fix the Federal Government
o For Romney & Company, Campaign is all Business (NY Times) – How Mitt runs his campaign and what it would mean for his Presidency
o Evangelicals for Mitt statement of support
o Mark DeMoss on why Evangelicals should support Mitt
o Ann Romney Opens Up (People Magazine) – Great interview with Ann; she would be a fantastic First Lady!

Speeches
o “Faith in America” – Seminal address on the role of religious faith and liberty in our nation
o Address to the Value Voters Summit – Seminal address on culture and value issues
o Iowa Straw Poll victory speech
o Highlights from the Republican debates (click 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th)
o Speech at CPAC 2007 – One of Mitt’s first major addresses to the leading grassroots gathering of Conservatives; one of his best speeches in my opinion
o Presidential Campaign Announcement – Mitt announcing that he’s running and why he’s running

Campaign videos
o Biographical overview video of Mitt Romney (click part I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII)
o “Path to Victory” webcast – Mitt and Meg Whitman (CEO of eBay) discussing the 2007 campaign and discussing the plan for 2008
o Retrospective of Governor Romney’s campaign in 2007
o Online “Ask Mitt Anything” – For those of us who don’t live in an early primary state, Mitt held an online town hall meeting which provides a really good overview of his key positions
o Christmas 2006 – Behind the scenes look at the Romney family and how they made the decision together that Mitt should run for President; cynics have criticized this video as contrived, but I love the fact that he has held his family together while achieving such exceptional success; you can’t fake this stuff

Media appearances
o Mitt on Jim Cramer of CNBC’s Mad Money – Great interview by Jim Cramer where he calls Mitt the “Best businessman in America”
o Mitt on ABC News talking about Ann – Great interview of Mitt where he discusses what he loves so much about Ann
o Mitt on Meet the Press – Tim Russert throws everything he’s got plus the kitchen sink at Mitt who proceeds to address each point in a clear, classy, and compelling way

My favorite TV spots
o “Searched” – Compelling true story of how Mitt Romney shut down Bain Capital and moved all the employees to NYC to search for and find the daughter of one of his partners
o “Choice: Judgment” – Striking contrast ad highlighting Mike Huckabee’s 1,033 pardons and clemencies (more than 2x his three predecessors) vs. zero from Mitt Romney
o “Choice: The Record” – Ad contrasting Mitt’s record on illegal immigration vs. Mike Huckabee’s record of supporting tax payer funded scholarships and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants
o “Not Politically Correct” – Mitt’s record supporting life, English immersion education, and traditional marriage
o “Experience Matters” – Ad highlighting the lack of real world, executive experience on the part of Hillary Clinton (and equally applicable to the other Democrats)
o “Ready for Action” – Summary of Governor Romney’s stump speech in 60 seconds; user-generated ad based on a contest that was run back in September
o “Our Home” – Some precious footage of Mitt playing with his children and grandchildren; focuses on the importance of strengthening our families
o “Leadership” and “Energy” – I just love the images of Mitt jogging through the backwoods and the focus on his track record in business; I think he’s the only politician I’ve seen jogging where it looked like he was actually in shape…not just a photo op
o “Ocean” – Ad lamenting the degradation of our culture and Mitt’s thoughts on how he would like to address it; as a parent this one really resonated with me
o “Tested, Proven” – One of his early ads highlighting his track record in Massachusetts
o “I Like Vetoes” – Ad highlights his track record of vetoing excessive spending; no doubt in my mind that he’ll control spending after seeing this ad and other times when he has addressed this topic

Finally, it is one thing to support Mitt with your vote, but I’d like to ask you to consider supporting Mitt in a more active way. Like many of you, I had always followed politics, but never became active in politics (other than voting) until this year in support of Governor Romney.

This year is different. First, this is arguably the most consequential election in over twenty years. The challenges and issues that will be faced by our next President will have far reaching ramifications for our children and grandchildren.

Additionally, we face a set of candidates on the Republican side who represent vastly different positions and perspectives, some of whom threaten to tear asunder the Reagan coalition that has served us so well. Whether it is the socially liberal and sanctuary city defending Rudy Giuliani, the divisive, theocratic, soft on crime and illegal immigration, and fiscally populist Mike Huckabee, or the McCain Feingold, “Gang of 14”, and pro-Amnesty John McCain, there are clear differences in the way that each of these individuals would take the Republican Party.

If you’ve found this persuasive, please do whatever you can to support Mitt Romney’s candidacy. If you’re from Iowa, please caucus for Mitt (get more information here). Winning Iowa is job one between now and January 3.

If you are not from Iowa, please stay informed by checking in here at Elect Romney in 2008 every day. Make a donation to help Mitt win the media air war. Put on a bumper sticker or put up a yard sign (get them here). And most importantly, talk with your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors about why you’re supporting Mitt Romney! Personal testimonials from trusted individuals are by far the most effective ways to gain more supporters for Mitt!

If you still have questions or remain unconvinced, leave a comment and we’ll do our best to answer your question. Or better yet, if you are also a Mitt supporter, leave a comment telling us why! Thank you for reading!

A couple great donation programs going on

I wanted you all know about a couple really good donation programs going on.

First is the Media Victory Fund. This allows you to actually sponsor a specific TV ad in a specific early state. Options include Iowa for $80, South Carolina for $300, Florida for $525, and New Hampshire for $1275 and includes a DVD with all of the ads on it.

The other program is called the UltiMITT Holiday. This program offers gifts for different levels of contributions.

First option is a Mitt Romney tree ornament for every $25.

The “Green Ribbon Package” includes two Romney coffee mugs and a Romney family picture signed by Mitt and Ann for $50.

The “Red Ribbon Package” includes the mugs and photo from above plus Tree Ornament plus Ann Romney recipes $100.

Finally, the “Gold Ribbon Package” includes the mugs, photo, ornament, and recipes from above plus a downloadable phone message of Mitt answering your voicemail using your name and Romney fleece blanket.

Either way you donate, it basically goes to the same place. The Media fund gives you the satisfaction of targeting specific states and the Holiday offerings give you some pretty unique Romney gear.

Please consider donating. Presidents don’t elect themselves…it takes each of us doing our part to help make it happen. Mitt can absolutely go all the way, but he needs our help. Thanks for your consideration!

Rally for Romney — Orange County, CA

THANK YOU to all those who participated tonight across this great nation of America in the Rally for Romney events. There were about 100 volunteers that attended our rally in Irvine, CA tonight.

Ann expressed gratitude to everyone attending the many rallies tonight. She said that what was being done at the rallies across America tonight had never been done before in presidential politics.

In the pre-meeting with Ann, she provided some insight into all the planning that goes into the many fund raisers and campaign stops. Tonight, the Governor was at the rally in San Diego and she said one of her sons was at the Las Vegas rally. Her brother was at the Florida rally. As the pre-meeting was ending, she had to leave for about 45 minutes to give an interview to the CBS News affiliate in Los Angeles (KCBS, Ch. 2) with Stacy Butler. Ann said that she and Governor Romney were hopeful that tonight’s nationwide rallies would bring in many first-time volunteers as well as new contributors through their efforts.

Ann was asked how she and Gov. Romney are holding up. She said she is “doing great”. One of the organizers tonight told me the Romney’s are making four to six campaign stops a day, working 14 to 18 hour days every day. Gov. Romney has had a cold lately, but he is over it now.

Mrs. Romney expressed gratitude many times during the evening. She graciously went from table to table to meet people. She was most optimistic and full of energy and expressed her confidence that “we have a good strategy to win the nomination” and that “we have the best candidate.”

Kevin Gabisini (Newport Beach), Cold Calling. This was Kevin’s first time working in any campaign.

Lisa Cowan (Laguna Beach) and her husband (Bob) received several $1,000 donations as well as many other contributions.

Steve Samuelian (Laguna Beach) has been a huge supporter of the Governor since Day One. He is always there for Mitt!

Daniel Seminario is an Orange County campaign volunteer who assists in driving for Ann whenever she is in town, which has been often these past months.

At the barbeque event I attended in Irvine a few weeks ago, Gov. Romney commented that what keeps him going at a high energy level every day is getting out across America and meeting so many wonderful people. Mrs. Romney has said that many times as well. I got to chat with Daniel tonight for about 10 minutes and he is a great example of the “great people” to whom the Romneys refer. Every time I have the privilege of attending any of these events, I come away completely impressed by the caliber of people Gov. Romney is attracting at the grass roots! This is work. But without exception, every person involved is cheerful, happy, excited, optimistic, and determined. For those reading this post: If you ever wanted to make a difference in the world, in America, now is the time to get involved. It really is fun. Governor Romney is going to be the Republican nominee and why not join the winning team now!

My daughter, Melissa Abernethy (San Clemente) making her debut into presidential politics.

Erin & Kristen Riley (San Clemente) with Ann. This is their first time campaigning; Jan Riley was also at the rally.

Marian Clayton (Boston) & Lisa Clayton (Newport Beach) worked hard keeping everything running smoothly during the rally. Marian is a marketing manager working full-time in the Romney for President campaign; she is the person charged with organizing tonight’s event in Irvine, CA. Marian could not disclose results, but she informed me that they met their goals for both attendance and contributions for the evening.

Romney Delivers “JFK Religion” Speech

John F. Kennedy said, “I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute–where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote….” Many were worried at that time that the Pope or others in the Catholic Church would have undue influence on JFK should he become president.

Today, many including myself have been waiting for Mitt Romney to deliver a similar speech. One which would calm any fears that as a Mormon, the leaders of the Mormon Church would not have undue influence on him should he become president. Romney’s values are shaped by his beliefs. Those values have been expressed time and again along with what has been stated in the debates. I have not read or heard lots of dialog about concerns with Romney being influenced by the leaders of the Mormon Church. Maybe those with concerns are unable to move past the theological differences, or maybe people have learned that Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, is a member of the Mormon Church in good standing, and we don’t see a lot of undue influence with him.

The one concern I do read and hear about is Romney’s vacillating on issues due to political expediency and convenience. Thus, I do not sense that Romney’s religious problems equate to the same problems John F. Kennedy had. Although the DNC would love to contradict me, the only issue Romney vacillated on was abortion. We all know he changed his tune for the better and is currently Pro-Life. I’m beginning to think that people may wonder why Romney could have been effectively Pro-Choice before he was Governor and square that position with a Church that teaches so strongly against abortion. The contradiction in his previous political position with the teachings of his Church only feeds the naysayer’s argument that Romney is not to be trusted, that he will say anything to get elected which at the time was in the most liberal of states.

We’ve heard about the personal family experience with abortion that ended in the death of a family member. That incident shaped not only Romney’s thoughts on the matter for many years, but those of many in his family, including his parents. We’ve heard about his experience with Harvard scientists in researching embryo cloning and how the epiphany came to him about the affect Row v. Wade had on the value of life from a scientific perspective. But even with these powerful personal experiences, how can Romney claim consistency in values with the belief structure that teaches contra the abortion view he held for so long?

The answer came recently in a passionate exchange of ideas in Iowa. I believe that this discussion is the John F. Kennedy speech that Romney needed to deliver. It does not wholly pertain to the influence of Mormon leadership, but does show how Romney can be a member of a Church so adamantly opposed to abortion and yet hold a different political view for years without compromising the principals and values of that religion. Romney did not compartmentalize his beliefs for political gain. He did not do that when he ran for Senator or when he ran for Governor. How is that possible? Watch or read this exchange and judge for yourself. If you feel this “off-the-air discussion” does not answer the religious concerns of voters, then please comment on what you feel Romney still needs to deliver to voters about his religion. Please do not comment if it’s about Mormon theology as there is nothing Romney could ever say that would fix your theological concerns. What more needs to be added than what he says here?

Warning it’s a long video at 20 min; most of it is “off-the-air”:

Fundraising - the June Q2 push

June 4th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in 2008, California, Request for Help

Many of you will remember that Mitt got a lot of positive press out of his fundraising victory in Q1. He led the Republican field decisively at $23M vs. Giuliani’s $15M (McCain was even lower).

Q2 is now upon us. At the end of June, the candidates will again roll up their numbers and report them to the public.

We need to help Mitt sustain his momentum by pushing for a blockbuster Q2!

You can help by making a donation, telling your friends, family, and colleagues about Mitt, and even becoming a fundraiser yourself.

Many of us on the Elect Romney in 2008 blog team are fundraisers. I am raising funds for Mitt…it’s the first time that I’ve ever done something like this. Although the idea of asking for donations may feel a bit daunting, I’m finding that it’s actually a lot of fun because what you’re really doing is telling people about why you support Mitt…what is it they say about a great product selling itself?

By the way, if any of you readers out there are in California and would like to join the Outreach team, feel free to contact me. Just leave a comment at this post.

Let’s get motivated for Mitt!

Elevator pitch part II

June 2nd, 2007 | 2 Comments | Posted in Mitt Romney, Request for Help

Hi Everybody,

A week or so ago, I asked people to weigh in on their elevator pitch for Mitt. Since then I’ve taken a crack at my own that I could use in emails or verbally. Here it is:

• Exceptional track record as a business executive as Co-founder and CEO of Bain Capital, CEO of Bain & Company, and a JD/MBA from Harvard where he was a Baker Scholar
• Broad experience applying business principles to the Public Sector and Government as President & CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games and Governor of Massachusetts
• The right vision for strengthening America’s national security, economy, and families
• Strong character and values as demonstrated by his vibrant family life and testimonials of his friends and colleagues
• Increasing momentum and national viability

A few requests for help…please comment on:

1. Am I missing anything here? Any other key points that are really at the “core of the core” to Mitt’s message and who he is (in the context of this being the quick “30 second” summary of why we support mitt)
2. What do you think are the best links to articles, polls, blog entries out there that support these points?

I’m using this in emails asking people to support Mitt in advance of the Q2 deadline at end of June. I’m using the summary version above for the main email, and then providing more detail in an “appendix” for the message.

If we get this right, we can all use this for our fundraising efforts for Mitt!

Thanks!

- David

Donate frequent flier miles for our Veterans!

May 27th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Announcements, Request for Help, Veterans

In honor of Memorial Day, a bunch of airlines are matching frequent flier mile donations mile-for-mile. The miles will go toward free flights for injured service men and women or their families to visit them in the hospital. The match is in effect now through 11:59pm on Monday, 5/28.

It is being run in conjunction with Fisher House. It is a great organization that sets up free guest houses near military hospitals all around the world so that families can be near their injured soldiers while they are in the hospital. I would encourage anybody interested in supporting our troops to check them out.

Here are the airlines accepting donations:
- Airtran
- Alaska
- American
- Continental
- Delta
- Frontier
- Midwest
- Northwest
- United
- US Air

If you have any spare miles, or balances that have been sitting around dormant for a while, this is a great opportunity to direct them to a great cause, and to double their impact! Please click here for more information.

Go Vote at Hotair!

May 10th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in 2008, Endorsements, Request for Help

Allahpundit over at Hotair is running a poll asking “To whom should I dramatically throw my support in a naked bid for extra traffic?” (in reference to a post on Redstate about Ann Romney’s donation to PP).

Right now, Fred is in the lead at 45% with Mitt in 2nd place at 19%. Let’s see if we can’t make a good showing for Mitt on yet another online poll. Mitt won Hotair’s last post-debate decisively, so we want to keep up the momentum.

Here’s the link:

12 Days of Contributions Left!

I got a letter from Mitt:

We’re making great progress and our message is really taking hold! We must build upon this early momentum and continue reaching out to people with our positive vision. Please continue to show your support for my conservative leadership by sending a generous contribution before the March 31st campaign finance report is due.

-Mitt Romney

Today is 12 days before the March 31st deadline for the FEC campaign finance report. Mitt went on to say, “This report will serve as a clear indication of our team’s strength and unity and will be a significant factor in determining who will secure the Republican nomination and then face-off with the Democrat in the general election.”

So if you have contributed or are considering contributing to a great effort, try and double what you would consider contributing (within your budget) and go to this link: https://www.mittromney.com/contribution/form. Today you can make a difference to the FEC report that will be news about Mitt in April!

After careful consideration, I quadrupled what I was planning on contributing. Come join the fun and affect the history of our great nation today!

Getting involved

March 5th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Request for Help

I’m currently trying to put together a more or less comprehensive list of ways people can get involved and help Mitt’s campaign. (The current list can be found at Mittroots.org.) I’m interested in both volunteer positions with the official campaign as well as grassroots efforts. For example,

  • Volunteer positions available with the state-level offices of the campaign
  • Real world grassroots groups, e.g. that hold meetings in person
  • Online opportunities, blogging, polls, large discussion groups, etc.
  • Ways to engage the media, stories that need responses, letters to the editor, ?
  • Instructions and materials for running an effective grassroots meeting, a booth on a college campus or at a public event, etc.
  • Sources of bumper stickers, lawn signs, etc.
  • How to get involved in fundraising for Mitt

Message to State Sites for Mitt/for Romney…

I have a suggestion for all the states sites for Mitt/Romney. Since Governor Romney is the chairman of the RGA (or Republican Governors Association for those of you who don’t know). Why don’t you highlight news about your Republican Governors if they are up for re-election, or those running to take the job from the Democrats in November. In a big way we’ll be aiding Governor Romney by doing this. What better way to show that we can mobilize, and therefor show us well nationally in the process for when and if he decides to run.
