NEW VIDEO: Romney Accepts “Canterbury Medal for Religious Freedom”

From here:

Jun 3, 2008

On May 8, 2008, Gov. Mitt Romney and his wife Ann were awarded the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty’s Canterbury Medal for “Courage in the Defense of Religious Liberty.” Mr. Romney’s 18-minute acceptance speech, before friends and supporters of the Becket Fund at the Metropolitan Club in New York, focused on the need for religion in a free society.

The Canterbury Medal is awarded annually to the public figure who “resolutely and publicly refused to render unto Caesar that which is God’s.” Past recipients include Nobel Peace Laureate Elie Wiesel, Mary Ann Glendon of Harvard Law School and current U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See and Charles Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship Ministries.

No End of Bile from Obama’s Bully Pulpits

May 31st, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Barack Obama, Religion

I have to say that if someone had asked me a year ago which major Democratic candidate’s campaign would have produced the most melodramatic moments, I would have chosen Hillary’s in a New York minute.

Events have, of course, proven me wrong. The ongoing soap opera that is the Obama campaign has provided us with more YouTube moments than I could possibly have hoped for.

Obama is a very talented speaker and he has been very successful at utilizing the ‘Net to raise money, but, Oh My, those radical pastor eruptions!!

These alleged “men of the cloth” need to get back to preaching the basic dogmas of Christianity and leave politics to the politicians.

Everybody knows the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his bigoted anti-American rants. We’ll soon get to know the Rev. Michael Pfleger. With Barack Obama, you’re not only waiting for the other shoe to drop. You’re following a centipede.

Romney Medals in Religious Freedom

Here is some coverage of tonight’s award to Gov. and Mrs. Romney from the Beckett Fund at the Canterbury Medal Dinner.

It’s not the gold medal that former Olympics boss and GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney sought on the campaign trail. But his and his wife Ann’s winning of the annual Beckett Fund Canterbury Medal recognizes one element of his failed bid cheered by fans of religious freedom. “Mitt and Ann unapologetically but gracefully stood their ground and embraced their faith in the face of all manner of provocations,” says fund President Kevin “Seamus” Hasson. Fund insiders tell us that the two Mormons will be presented with the medal in May, joining other recipients like Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel. Hasson says the medal goes to the “public figure who has resolutely refused to render to Caesar that which is God’s.” Romney tells us it’s an “honor to be recognized.”

Comment:

Romney!!!!
I was so excited to see someone recognize the Romneys and their graciousness! They never once said anything ugly or negative or have classes on other presidential candidates religion as one candidate did. The media was always after him too. What a gentleman and woman!!! He truly lives and believes in the freedom of religion. We all should remember that was one of the main founding principles of our nation and why our forefathers came.

CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR VISION AND THE ROMNEYS!

Huckabee Writing Book On His Failed Presidential Bid

I can’t wait to run out and buy Pastor Mike’s new book. Here’s a title suggestion: “How I Managed to Manipulate Evangelicals into Wasting Their Votes on Me” Subtitle: “And in the Process Set Myself Up With A Really Cool Hollywood Agent and Book Deal.”

~~John Cronin~~

By ANDREW DeMILLO, Associated Press Writer Thu Apr 24, 12:10 PM ET

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Two weeks after the next president is elected, Mike Huckabee will publish a book sharing details on his failed bid for the White House and offering his vision for remodeling the conservative movement.

Sentinel, a conservative imprint of Penguin Group (USA), said Wednesday it will publish the former Arkansas governor and one-time Republican presidential hopeful’s next book, to be released Nov. 18.

The book, not yet titled, will offer an insider’s view of Huckabee’s campaign and also offer his vision for the future, publishers said Wednesday.

Evangelicals Should not Vote for Huckabee or McCain (so says major Evangelical leader)

This message is going out along the Christian News Wire. Hope it makes it far and wide QUICKLY!!

The Reverend Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK), in his capacity as a private citizen, today released this statement regarding tomorrow’s primary votes:

“I have spent the last 33 years as an active evangelical Christian. I am an ordained evangelical minister. I graduated from an evangelical Bible college and an evangelical seminary. I serve on the board of America’s oldest association of evangelical church leaders, and I head one of the most active evangelical ministries in Washington, DC.

“I have thought long and hard about the upcoming elections. I have prayed earnestly about them, and I have met many of the candidates and their top campaign people and I have studied their platforms and policy proposals.

“After careful and prayerful consideration, I have concluded that an evangelical vote for Mike Huckabee is a vote for John McCain, and a vote for John McCain will be a disaster for this country.

“Let me explain. It’s clear to me and many others that Mike Huckabee is not broadening his appeal enough to win the primary. Therefore, his only contribution is to siphon off votes, giving McCain a clear path to victory. It’s very possible Huckabee is being positioned to be John McCain’s pick for vice president. In order to win, McCain needs Mike Huckabee and the evangelical votes he brings with him. The specter of a McCain-Huckabee ticket is bad for evangelicals.

. . .

“Evangelicals must consider both the stakes and the realities in this election. Mike Huckabee’s continuation only helps John McCain. The consequences are just too great to take this risk. A McCain victory will hurt this country because of the long-term damage of the wrong judges and justices. Worse, McCain’s court legacy will continue to hurt our children and our grandchildren, perhaps even our great grandchildren.

“Evangelicals must choose wisely from among candidates other than Mike Huckabee and John McCain as they vote tomorrow, February 5.”

For identification purposes only, the Reverend Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK) is president of Faith and Action in the Nation’s Capital, chairman of the Committee on Church and Society for the Evangelical Church Alliance and co-founder of the annual National Memorial for the Pre-born and their Mothers and Fathers, the only pro-life worship service held inside the U.S. Capitol complex in Washington, DC.

Strong words there, and from someone who hasn’t endorsed Romney . . . just a pragmatic leader who sees how horrible McCain would be as both a nominee and/or President.

Let’s hope this makes the rounds QUICKLY!

Romney’s Ideal Victory

By Chris Suellentrop

NEW YORK TIMES

Tags: Florida, John McCain, Mitt Romney

Does Mitt Romney have a victory to cling to in Florida? Joshua Trevino, vice president for public policy at San Francisco’s Pacific Research Institute (and one of the founders of the conservative blog RedState), breaks down the numbers on his personal blog.

“Mitt Romney is in a bad way,” Trevino writes. “He blew through $10 million in Iowa and lost; and outspent McCain eight to one in Florida, and lost that too. But for all this, Mitt Romney is not done yet and the reason lies in the breakdown of this evening’s Florida vote.” He continues:

CNN has the exit-poll numbers, and they reveal some surprising things:

* Romney won pro-lifers.
* Romney won the mainstream religious. (Huckabee won the very religious less than one-fifth of the pool.)
* Romney won the Protestants.
* Romney tied Huckabee with Evangelicals.
* Romney won the pro-GWB voters.
* Romney is the primary second choice of Giuliani voters, Thompson voters …. and McCain voters.
* Romney won the immigration hard-liners.
* Romney won the upper-middle class, earning between $100,000 and $200,000 annually.
* Romney won the terrorism-oriented voters.
* Romney won the self-identified conservatives and the self-identified very conservative.
* Romney won the values-oriented voters.
* Romney won the white voters.
* Romney won the tax-cutting voters.

In short, Mitt Romney won the Republican Party’s idea of itself and that, too, is a big deal. If you’re white, Protestant, anti-abortion, go to church on Sundays, think well of the President, want lower taxes, hate terrorists, make a good living, want to do something about immigration, and live in Florida, chances are you voted Romney. The question before Florida was whether McCain could win a closed Republican race, and now we know he can. The question now is whether he can win conservatives and in Florida, he did not.

The 900-Pound Gorilla — RELIGIOUS BIGOTRY

Flag Waving

Though I provide analysis below, I do not suggest I have answers to the questions I raise. But I do raise questions that I think are of critical importance and consideration; not just to this current presidential contest, but more importantly to America. These are questions I think nobody wants to discuss (see photo below).

Tonight (1/29), I have heard the term “lick their wounds” several times. That is not at all how I feel about the loss in Florida. It is fair to say, I believe, that America as a nation, has matured in its history to a point in which a woman or a black man can be elected President by a majority of both sexes and a majority of those of the white or black races. I believe that America has come of age to the point that the bigotry we call sexism and racism, though still engrained in some people, has been marginalized.

What about the bigotry of religious intolerance? In an enlightened age, it is known by all that bigotry of any kind is not acceptable. In this modern day, we don’t generally hear statements of bigotry in common language in ways that were pervasive as recent as the 1950s and 1960s. Religious bigotry was even out in the open at that time as evidenced by evangelical ministers that routinely and publicly denounced the idea that Americans might vote for a Catholic. Today, bigotry of any kind, as a matter of common discussion in mixed company, is simply unacceptable in today’s diverse age. As a result, we do not hear public discussion about religious bigotry. Does that mean that this form of bigotry has also been marginalized to the point America can elect a Mormon? I do not believe it has. In fact, I think it is still pervasive, if now private.

In the states in which GMR won the Silver, by how much did he miss the Gold? Usually around 5%, maybe 10%. Today, he missed the Gold by 6% in a very large state. Since I began to seriously pay attention to presidential politics for 2008 back in 2006, I have seen poll results showing that a fair number of Americans are unwilling to ever vote for a Mormon; anywhere from about 20% of those surveyed to 40% recently. Since I have always concluded that America has matured to the point at which religious intolerance has been effectively marginalized, I more or less dismissed those poll numbers as based on simple ignorance, not bigotry.

Then, as the early state caucuses and primaries became history, I started to see a trend that I saw repeated today in Florida. It is fair to say that a majority of Americans do not find McCain acceptable as President as evidenced by his votes of 35% compared to 65% to all others. But to understand whether bigotry is at work against MR specifically, we need to drill down into the numbers. Is it not also fair to say that the most conservative voters of all would not be generally attracted to McCain, who is a well-known liberal Republican, or at least a Republican that cannot be trusted?

[In order to keep this commentary from becoming longer than it is, I use only the initials of candidates’ first and last names and any time there is a number, it represents a percentage]

In Florida, among evangelicals, the votes were JM(30), MR(29), MH(29). We can conclude that the 29 who voted for MR are not bigots. My presumption is that the reason MH’s 29 did not go to JM is because they consider him way too liberal to represent their values and principles. But if MH were not in the race, would all 29 go to MR? As you think about that answer, if they would not all go to MR, why would any significant portion of them go to JM? Incidentally, as MH keeps smiling and telling the world he can be the nominee, he knows he cannot. He won exactly 4 of all non-evangelical votes; that is par for the course for him. Since day one in Iowa, there has never been broad support for MH. Why does he stay in the race?

White evangelicals voted this way: MH(31), MR(31), JM(28). I think it is fair to say that those who voted for JM would be the more moderate or less orthodox evangelicals, simply because they could have chosen an orthodox evangelical in MH, and they did not. If true, and MH were not in the race, would MH’s 31 go to JM or MR and why? Why would an orthodox evangelical vote for the more liberal, twice married, untrustworthy Republican when they have MR, whose values and principles are much closer to theirs by comparison?

Of voters who think abortion should be illegal, the votes were MR(35), JM(29), MH (21). These are very conservative voters. We know 35 are not bigots and since MR won the majority here, we know that a very high percentage of voters know him to be strong pro-life. If MH were not in the race, would most of his 21 go to MR or JM and why? Of voters who think abortion should always be illegal, the votes were MH(32), MR(30), and JM(26). These voters are even more conservative overall. If MH were not in the race, would most of his 32 go to the more conservative candidate MR? If they would not, why not? Why would more than a handful go to JM instead of MR? Could bigotry influence their decision to go to JM?

Voters that identified themselves as very conservative were MR(44), JM(21), MH(20). It is well known by now that MR is the most conservative of both JM and MH. That being the case, if MH were not in the race, would his ‘very conservative’ voters go to the known, more conservative MR or to the less conservative, more liberal JM? And why? Could bigotry influence their decision to go to JM?

Over at Evangelicals for Mitt, both Steven Muscatello and Nancy French think MH should do “the honorable thing” and drop out. Read their excellent arguments here and here. But think of the context of my rhetorical questions above and consider this. If RG could so easily see the vanity of continuing the race, knowing he could never win, why can MH not see it? Or is it that he sees it and has ulterior motives? Think of the irony. RG, the person many have derided as ethically challenged, drops out seeing the reality; there are no ulterior motives really. MH, whose supporters consider the most ethical and upstanding man in the race, who would consider himself the most humble among them all, plans to “win the nomination” to quote him. Right. And pigs will fly for the first time in February. We now have resounding proof that MH cannot garner more than 10% of all non-evangelical votes and he has only nearly received 40% of all evangelical votes in one state. Clearly, he has no broad support, unlike GWB did as an evangelical. So, his decision to stay in the race is based on what? Ego? Vanity? Love of the sport? Is he lying to us when he says he is not running for Pastor in Chief? Or does he want to influence his voters away from MR and if so, why?

As many at this site have shown, MH revealed his stripes when he let slip his rhetorical Jesus/brother question in an interview. He also ardently campaigned in Salt Lake City to save the Mormons there from hell at the evangelical convention.

My opinion is that the frequent citing of 20 to 40 percent of all Americans unwilling to vote for a Mormon for President, the bigots are at the low end of the range. I may be naïve, but I do not believe that 40% of all Americans are religious bigots. Now, we know that when MR loses the Gold, the margin of loss is only 5% to 10%. That margin of difference is well below the 20% conservative estimate. Where are those 20% or so aligned? Are they divided among RG, MH, and JM? Are they mostly with MH or JM?

My conclusion is that the margin of victory that JM has enjoyed in any state, is a direct correlation to the reported bigotry still pervasive in America. If so, how does MR overcome this obvious bigotry, to win? These less than 20% “unwilling voters” are currently aligned with RG, JM, and MH, in some unknown mix. But knowing this does not help, does it? By definition, if they are bigots, MR will never be their choice. It cannot be argued that all 20% of these “unwilling” voters are in JM’s camp. Yet, it is he that is the beneficiary of their unwillingness to ever vote for MR. And clearly not all of the supporters left in RG’s and MH’s camp are bigots; but some are. So it is fair to say that if both RG and MH were not in the race, a fair number of their non-bigoted supporters would back the most conservative candidate in the race — MR. And why are the voters not following Rush Limbaugh’s advice to not vote for JM and MH?

So again, what is the motivation of MH to remain in a race he knows he cannot and will not win? Is his primary motivation to steer as many evangelicals to the Protestant JM, away from MR? If so, is that reason enough to not drop out of the race?

I think this issue is the 900-pound gorilla in the room with which nobody wants to make eye contact.

Hill v. Mitt Will Be It

The Republicans’ Florida debate demonstrated that the strong winner, Mitt Romney, has developed Mittmentum and is on course to election in November, despite the Clintons and some religious bigotry.

The United States of America’s next president won’t be its first president of Italian ancestry (as Rudy Giuliani hopes), because the Republicans won’t nominate a person who does not share the Republicans’ traditional pro-life, pro-personal morality values; or the first former prisoner-of-war (as John McCain still yearns), because now he’s too old for the grueling job and previously he was too inclined to break with most Republicans and join with Democrats (McCain-Feingold, Kennedy-McCain, Gang of Fourteen); or the first Baptist minister (as Mike Huckabee prays), because he’s not up to the job, he’s not the best choice and one president born in Hope, Arkansas was one too many.

But there WILL be big change.

The next president will be the first female president, or the first half-black president (Barack’s mother was white and ignoring that is…not right), or the first Mormon president.

Much of the media really would prefer Obama versus McCain, and have been broadcasting, reporting and editorializing accordingly, but the politically adept Clintons will do whatever it takes to win the Democrat nomination.

Nevertheless, in the end, enough Republicans will refuse to succumb to religious bigotry and reject a monagamous Mormon who shares their basic values for a man who divorced his first wife and married a rich, much younger divorcee whose family could support his political ambitions.

Mitt Romney: True, Consistent, Long-Time Conservative

Flag Waving

In the last few days, I have been reading most of the comments that many of you been leaving in this blog. First of, I wish to thank all of you who have done so; even those who presently disagree with the authors of this site or with Governor Romney himself. Those of us who strive to bring truth to the surface as we attempt to enlighten, are grateful.

Many of the comments are by new visitors. I have read comments by those who have served Fred Thompson well. Many are from Ron Paul supporters. Others, though they may not state their allegiance, may presently support Governor Huckabee, Mayor Giuliani, or Senator McCain. Many of you are contemplating support of Governor Romney. My concern is that many are stating they are afraid that if he is elected President, he will “revert to his liberal past” or words to that effect.

Mitt w/grandson and Ann

With complete respect, I offer some information. First, many comments mention that Gov. Romney is a privileged man with a privileged upbringing; the inference being that he is out of touch with the average man and woman. Those who struggle day to day to provide for their families. I will save what I would like to write here for another future post. Suffice to say that Governor Romney has spent thousands of hours in silent service (one-on-one) of children, women, and men with struggles many of us will never know (crying with them; praying with them; helping them).   That, as a lay leader in his church over many years.   If you want to get a glimpse of the real man, click here —-> MESSED UP HAIR
(keep in mind that Governor Romney has never mentioned this, nor has he ever mentioned personal service rendered to others; unlike Mike Huckabee who has done so many times).

It is simply false that GMR has ever been liberal in any way. Even the label “pro-choice”, to which GMR admitted, is misleading because his actions, his behavior, his decisions have always been on the side of life. Why am I writing this to you at 2:00 in the morning instead of sleeping? Because too many good, strong conservatives have bitten into the hook of the liberal MSM (hook, line, and sinker) to simply accept the flip/flop label altogether without doing any primary research. I must admit I did too in 2006 before I conducted my own primary research. Don’t make a fatal mistake. Conduct your own, personal, primary research on the man and you will find what I did. That he has always been a consistent conservative.

Mitt with Little Girls’ Interview

Proof? Look at this simple flyer to contrast GMR’s positions to that of Senator Kennedy as GMR ran against him in the 90s. Click here ——-> THE REAL ROMNEY (remember, this campaign flyer showing Governor Romney’s positions, is from 1994)

But don’t take my word for it or even the content of this flyer that has been around for years. Please conduct your own research. It takes time, but you will discover, as I did, that the truth about the man is altogether different than what the MSM and Governor Romney’s competitors want you to swallow without thinking.

One good place to start is the following site. Click here —–> Encyclopedia Mittanica maintained by our own Mike Laub.

Lastly, for those of you who are just now discovering Governor Romney and wish to get different perspectives from those who have conducted extensive research into the man, the statesman, the husband/father, the volunteer, click here ——> WHY ROMNEY? Post SC/NV Evangelical vs non-Evangelical Scorecard (with NV Mormon vote analysis)

Based on Exit polling from SC, NV, MI, NH, and IA (as well as real vote tallies from the five states–apologies to WY!):

Total voters thusfar: 1,731,000

Total “Evangelical/”"Born Again” voters: 734,200

Total non-Evangelical voters: 996,800

Evangelical Numbers
Percent of total votes cast that were from Evangelicals: 42%
Evangelical Voters by candidate:

Huckabee — 36%

Romney — 25%
McCain — 24%
Thompson — 10%
Paul — 4%
Giuliani — 1%
Before SC, Romney was tied with Huckabee at 31% each with the Evangelical voters. Huckabee has an undisputed “base” among Evangelicals, but both Romney and McCain have proven that they can get a significant portion of the “Evangelical vote.”

Non-Evangelical Numbers

Percent of total votes cast that were from non-Evangelicals: 58%

Non-Evangelical Voters by candidate:

Romney — 36%
McCain — 35%
Paul — 9%
Huckabee — 9%

Thompson — 6%
Giuliani — 5%
Yes folks . . . the appeal for Huckabee to non-Evangelical voters is on par with Ron Paul’s (before this Sat he actually trailed Ron Paul among non-Evangelical votes by quite a large margin). Huckabee definitely HAS NOT proven in any contest thus far that he can get non-Evangelicals to support him in large numbers.

Huck’s best showing for the non-Evangelical votes was 14% (both in IA and SC–4th place in both instances). In MI he got 8% of non-Evangelical votes. In NH he got just 6%, and in Nevada he got a Hunter-esque 3% of the non-Evangelical votes. This does not bode well for Huckabee from Feb 5th onward (let alone how in the world he could compete in a general election). He’s yet to prove that he can move beyond his base (and his gaffe-prone campaigning the last few weeks isn’t helping with any “outreach”). Additionally MI, NV, and even SC have shown that he’s even having a hard time “locking up” his Evangelical base effectively.

I maintain my position from last week’s similar post: Mike Huckabee’s sole purpose in this race right now is to dilute Romney’s access to social conservative voters so that McCain can win and then Huck can hope to be chosen as VP.

***************

Now onto the Mormon vote in Nevada. Most media outlets seemed to delight in repeating that Romney got 94% of the LDS vote in Nevada. It was repeated time and again as I watched the coverage live and many pundits said/inferred that this factor accounted for Romney’s win. Actually, if you subtracted out every single Mormon vote for Romney he still would have won by a double digit margin and had nearly double the votes of either of his next two competitors.

But others seemed to express dismay that one religious group would be so absolutely monolithic in it’s support. However, they fail to recognize that Dems NV Exit polling shows that 3% of those participating in the Democratic caucus were Mormons. I’m guessing NONE of them voted for Romney (sarcasm intended).

With voting totals around 115,000 in the Dem race (I saw that number on Fox News) that would come out to approximately 3500 LDS voters NOT voting for Romney in the Dem caucus.

By contrast, 25% of the GOP caucus in NV that were Mormon with nearly 45,000 total GOP voters — therefore around 11250 LDS voters and 94% of them were for Romney . . . but that means nearly 500 were not.

So, 4000 LDS in Nevada voted “Not for Romney” and 10,750 voted for Romney. That breaks down to 73% LDS for Romney and 27% LDS that were not for Romney. Not quite the absolutely robotic block-voting group that many media outlets are trying to play up, but, still, a solid base for Romney in the western/mountain states.

An interesting counter-argument about such huge LDS support for Mitt is that LDS have absolutely NO reservations about or aversion to Romney based on his religion, and can therefore view him outside of that context (while most non-LDS cannot) and therefore judge him solely on his record, experience, and issue stances. Romney surely hasn’t “pandered” to the LDS base like Huckabee has to his Evangelical base. Historically speaking, there was no huge LDS groundswell of support for Orrin Hatch in 2000, or Mo Udall back in the 70s. Similarly, Harry Reid is a guy that only a tiny fraction of LDS would ever consider voting for based on co-religiosity. In Romney most LDS are able to see, outside of the context of him having a “weird religion,” that he is an incredibly competent, faithful, successful, and articulate leader with a record of conservative governance and broad-based executive experience.

I’ve never thought there was any “upside” for Romney or his supporters to decry the hard or soft bigotry that he’s faced because of his religion. Most of us have know it exists, but it is something difficult to quantify. It is what it is and it’s hard to change, so why focus on it, right? No one likes a “whiner” and Romney certainly can’t be criticized for being one.

However, a recent study out of Vanderbilt University provides pretty convincing evidence that religious aversion to Romney is very real, but has hidden under the cover of his branding as a “flip-flopper.” The researchers conclude that such negative perceptions and labels have “stuck” to Romney because of underlying or overt theological misgivings about his religion.

Bias against Mitt Romney’s religion is one of the reasons that the tag “flip-flopper” sticks with the former Massachusetts governor but not his Republican opponents, according to Vanderbilt political scientist[s] . . .

“We find that of those who accuse Romney of flip-flopping, many admit it is Romney’s Mormonism and not his flip-flopping that is the real issue,” Benson said. “Our survey shows that 26 percent of those who accuse Romney of flip-flopping also indicate that Mormonism, not flip-flopping, is their problem with Romney.” Benson noted that the pattern is especially strong for conservative Evangelicals. According to the poll, 57 percent of them have a bias against Mormons.

The study’s findings suggest that criticizing Romney for flip-flopping is an effective campaign strategy because it sticks with two different groups: those who are genuinely concerned about Romney’s shifts on certain issues and those who use the label as cover for the fact that they do not want to vote for a Mormon for president.

“As the campaign continues to unfold, these data become increasingly relevant as the Republicans choose a presidential nominee,” Geer said.

Again, I present this not as a complaint or “whining” about it, but in an informational sense. Like Romney, I love data and believe in it’s power. Having this new data out there might help people see deeper into the dynamics of this race and self-analyze why there may be an aversion to Romney for which he can hardly be blamed. That he has succeeded and progressed despite this “handicap” is quite impressive IMO.

Thoughts?

The Reason Romney Lost South Carolina Today.

January 20th, 2008 | 13 Comments | Posted in Bigotry, Religion, The Mormon Issue

Bogus Christmas Card

This is the kind of stuff that lost it for Romney in South Carolina. Basically, in my honest to goodness opinion Romney got “McCained”. Like McCain in 2000, the whisper campaign and the out and out bigotry is what lost it for him this go round. I heard in an interview on MSNBC or CNN weeks ago from an evangelical leader who point blank said, “If it were not for Romney’s Mormon faith he’d be a shoo in for the Republican Nomination”. (I’ll look for that video again so I can play it). But, I don’t see how it could be anything else. Keeping in mind that the two most important issues to SC voters according to exit polling was the economy and illegal immigration, now think long and hard to yourself…How on earth is John McCain the strongest candidate on either of those two issues.

That’s It, Huckabee “IS” God, How Could We Have Missed It?

From Irregular Times - News Unfit for Print.

You know how Authors of books have book signings to give them greater exposure? Well, Mike Huckabee thinks that he is God himself, given that he is now autographing Holy Bibles. If you need proof look at the following picture:

Huckabee Autographs Bible

Have you ever seen anything like this before? Even when I was a kid growing up in Michigan, and my Uncle was a Minister of the local Wesleyan church and I was “saved” I was given a bible that had a to: from: page in the front of it, but there was never a signature of the local Pastor. Quite frankly I’ve seen plenty of family member’s bibles, and I’ve never seen their’s signed by people either. What I’m trying to say here, is that even the most ardent evangelicals don’t do this sort of thing. Mr. Huckabee is on the fringes of even that group. All you can say is that he’s definitely a prideful, conceited, arrogant person. How he could do this with good conscience is beyond my understanding. This coupled with his previous comments should wake people up and realize that he is the person that we should go out of our way to not vote for. Citizens of South Carolina, Nevada, Florida and beyond should see this man for who he is, a politician trying to form a theocratic Government, not a democratic one. Be-Aware, Beware, Be-Aware!

CNN, Fox News, and others explain Nevada

January 19th, 2008 | 22 Comments | Posted in CNN, Fox News, Mitt Romney, Nevada, Politics, Religion

I just got dish, and am now exposed to more stupidity than I can handle.

I have heard many talking heads explain that the reason that Mitt Romney is going to win Nevada is because of the “large” LDS population in Nevada. One bimbo on CNN breathlessly explained that you just have to admit that it is a large explanation of why he is doing well out there that there is no denying it.

This from the National Review: http://corner.nationalreview.com/

Worried [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

I am noticing that the media is gearing up to discount Romney’s win in Nevada due to the higher numbers of Mormons in that state. So I’m no expert in statistics, but Mormons make up around 7% of the population in Nevada and from what I can tell the evangelical number is between 30-35%. How can they even attempt such spin? I have really been resisting the conspiracy stuff when it comes to Romney and the media but I don’t know if I can hold out much longer.

Thank you for sticking up for Romney while so many around you try to tear him down. I appreciate it.

Signed,
a homeschooler in Iowa that didn’t caucus for Huckabee

The religious affiliations of the people of Nevada are:

It is obvious that we need to take up a collection. Perhaps we can buy the people over at CNN a computer, and pay the monthly service fee for the internet, so they can do some of this research themselves.

The numbers are different than the numbers from the person who sent the e-mail to National Review. But this fact remains no matter which numbers you use: There are half as many people who would vote for Romney than Huckabee if they voted by religion.

UPDATE: The wikipedia numbers said “needs citation” and so I would not trust them as facts. Do you have access to some good numbers about Nevada?

UPDATE #2: Just watching “Morning Joe on Saturday” and the bimbo said, “Romney will win Nevada because of the large number of Mormons there.”

COME ON! CAN WE GET ANY MORE STUPID?

It has NOTHING to do with the issues?

UPDATE #3: According to this there are 169,714 LDS people in Nevada. According to this there are 2.6 million people in Nevada. That means 6.5% of the population is LDS. So 35% of Nevada is Evangelical. That is 5.4 times the number of LDS people in Nevada. So keep THESE FACTS in mind every time you hear CNN tell you the only reason Romney one Nevada…

UPDATE #4

I’ve already seen headlines at MSN.com that say Romney gets the Mormon vote. I wonder if this is the MSM’s attempt to further rile up Evangelicals in hopes of getting MSM’s favoite RINO–Mike Huckabee–more votes in future elections.

But here are the facts.

Mitt got 94% of the vote in Nevada.

That means he did worse than Bush in 2004 in the general election were “W” got 95% of the Mormon vote in the entire country.

Bush isn’t Mormon. Mormons like conservatives. Romney’s a conservative.

Vanderbilt poll explains why Romney’s flip-flopper label sticks; Political scientist says anti-Mormon bias finds cover

HT: Phil Kenny

From: Vanderbilt University.

Bias against Mitt Romney’s religion is one of the reasons that the tag “flip-flopper” sticks with the former Massachusetts governor but not his Republican opponents, according to Vanderbilt political scientist John Geer. “There is no question that Romney has changed his positions on some issues, but so have some of the other candidates,” Geer said. “Why does the label stick to Romney but not his opponents? At least some of the answer lies in Romney’s Mormon beliefs.”

Geer and colleagues Brett Benson of Vanderbilt and Jennifer Merolla of Claremont Graduate University designed an Internet survey to assess bias against Mormons, how best to combat it and its potential impact on the nomination process and general election campaign.

The poll, which was conducted by Polimetrix, included an oversample of Southern Evangelicals that Geer said measured bias with far more precision than previous efforts. The survey shows that 50 percent of conservative Evangelicals evaluate a moderate Christian candidate more positively than a conservative Mormon candidate.

Evangelical vs. non-Evangelical Scorecard: Some Surprising Results

Based on Exit polling from MI, NH, and IA (as well as real vote tallies from the three states):

Total voters thusfar: 1,226,000

Total “Evangelical/”"Born Again” voters: 465,150

Total non-Evangelical voters: 760,850

Evangelical Numbers
Percent of total votes cast that were from Evangelicals: 38%
Evangelical Voters by candidate:

Huckabee — 31%

Romney — 31%
McCain — 21%
Thompson — 6.4%
Paul — 5.5%
Giuliani — 1.6%
I think many would be surprised to find out that as many Evagelicals have chosen to vote for Romney as they have for Huckabee. Romney has definitely proved that he can get the “Evangelical vote.”

Non-Evangelical Numbers

Percent of total votes cast that were from non-Evangelicals: 62%

Non-Evangelical Voters by candidate:

Romney — 38%
McCain — 33%
Paul — 9.1%
Huckabee — 7.9%

Giuliani — 5.7%
Thompson — 3.4%
Yes folks . . . the appeal for Huckabee to non-Evangelical voters is LOWER than Ron Paul’s. OUCH!! Huckabee definitely HAS NOT proven in any contest thusfar that he can get non-Evangelicals to support him in large numbers. This does not bode well for Huckabee from Feb 5th onward (let alone how he could compete in a general election).

For all the talk of who can unify the three legs of the conservative base we are seeing living evidence that someone already is. Romney’s supposed weakness among religious social conservatives/Evangelicals isn’t bearing out in the votes cast thus far.

Roughly 1 out of every 3 Evangelicals who have cast their vote thus far have cast it for Romney.

Roughly 1 out of every 13 non-Evangelicals who have cast their vote thus far have cast it for Huckabee.

And therein lies the difference.

Mike Huckabee’s sole purpose in this race right now is to dilute Romney’s access to social conservative voters so that McCain can win and choose him as VP. There, I said it.
