Obama is wrong on Iran.

February 19th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Iran, Obama

Reasons to agree

  1. Obama has said; “We have not explored any kind of dialogue with either Iran or North Korea, and I think that has been a mistake. As a consequence, we have almost no leverage over them.” (Meet the Press with Tim Russert, October 22, 2006) Again, they say Obama is smart. How exactly is talking to them going to give us more leverage, besides being able to threaten them with not talking to them anymore?
  2. You should have to meat some simple standards to be considered a legitimate government worthy of diplomatic relations. Some of these qualifications would include not calling for the destruction of Israel, denying the holocaust, funding extremist, and providing weapons that are being used against us in Iraq, teaching that Jews and Christians are pigs and dogs in your schools, denying the holocaust, and 100 other things too many to include on this list. So, no Barak, we should not re-establish relations with Iran no matter how open minded it makes you feel. There is such thing as evil, and your unwillingness to acknowledge this, and to respond correctly keeps you from being qualified as president.

Dole Rubukes Huckabee

They keep piling on against the Huck, criticisms that is…This time from famed Veteran and former Senator from Kansas Bob Dole…

His letter to Huckabee:

Bob Dole
“Dear Governor,

“I’m puzzled by your gratuitous slaps at the President in the January/February issue of Foreign Affairs. By the way, I have no special ties to President Bush and I’m not involved in any presidential campaign.

“Why have you joined the “Bush bashers?” I know Iowans fairly well and doubt those attending Republican caucuses will appreciate your critical comments. President Bush gets more than his fair share of criticism from the other side and many in the “mainstream” media. They all really must be heartened by your comments.

“As a veteran, I worry about the future security of the good people of Iowa and all other Americans. We are engaged in a global war on terror which will not disappear because you imply a willingness, without any preconditions apparently, to sit down with the enemy. Sure we can all find fault with President Bush and his Administration on policy matters and phases of the Iraq policy. I doubt however Iowans will applaud second guessing more than five years after the agony of 9-11, particularly since you have been either silent or supportive during the interim as far as I can determine.

“The Foreign Affairs piece is a perfect example of 20-20 hindsight, and wishful thinking in most instances. You make knotty foreign policy issues sound so easy if we would just change our ways. I never was a foreign policy expert though I followed it closely for nearly three decades under Democrat and Republican Presidents.

“The great majority of Americans regardless of party, place liberty, freedom and security as top priorities. I’m certain you do too but I am troubled about some of the statements attributed to you in the Foreign Affairs article.

“The administration is certainly not perfect, I cannot recall one, but I do not believe it should be your primary foreign policy target. We are a great, compassionate nation and I know you want to keep it so.

“To win in 2008 we need to multiply, not divide,” Dole said.

He then joked in a post-script: “P.S. I lost the General in ‘96, so what do I know?”

Huck Gets Positive Press Attention in Iran…

Click Here —–>Top Republican Candidate Wants Dialog with Iran.

(I hope you don’t mind the addition, Rusty)

Not exactly the kind of attention one would want as they’re running for President.

But he was critical of the Bush foreign policy, which he described as “arrogant bunker mentality.”

In the Iranian context, his policy is being interpreted as a change, calling for bringing to the table non-military options as well. Huckabee is of the opinion that relations with Iran deteriorated following Bush’s “axis of evil” speech. In many points his message on Iran is more akin to that of the Democrats: there is a need for dialogue with Iran, and more diplomacy is needed. He quoted the Chinese strategist Sun Tzu, who authored The Art of War 2,500 years ago: “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.”

To the Dear Voters of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, Michigan, and Florida,

Do you really want for your President someone who Iran looks to positively? As you caucus and vote in the primaries in the next days and weeks, please keep this in mind!

Huck Knows More About Jamie Lynn Spears than he does the NIE Report

As this —–>Post from SLOG states, Mr. Huckabee sure does seem to know quite a bit about Jamie Lynn Spears, it’s too bad that he doesn’t have as much care and concern about International Relations. Maybe if he spent less time reading about her, he might know more about him.

This pretty much tells it like it is for me.

Click the Iran category link in this message for all the reasons why, this picture’s pretty self explanatory though.

Oh, and I’d like to see everyone boycott Columbia University to the degree that they’d have to close up shop forever for agreeing to let this piece of pond scum speak at their school.

Thank Goodness we have a man in Mitt Romney who would stand up to this man, and not let this idly pass him by if he were President.

Khatami…

May 27th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Iran, National Security

In a 09-05-2006 Press Release Governor Mitt Romney said:

“State taxpayers should not be providing special treatment to an individual who supports violent jihad and the destruction of Israel.”

Do you agree or disagree? Why?

This is what I think. Every country uses their foreign policy to reward what they consider good behavior, and punish bad behavior. Some would say that, we should isolate those who support violent jihad. They would say that we should reward good behavior and punish bad. After all, what gets rewarded gets repeated.

But not everyone agrees that we should punish bad behavior. Extreme liberals would say that there is no such thing as “bad behavior” but if you are talking to someone who won’t even call violent Jihad “bad” or calling for the destruction of Israel “bad” I would encourage you to find different people to talk to.

But some normal people might disagree with Romney.

The typical example of why you shouldn’t punish “bad” countries is WWI.

After WWI we told Germany that they needed to give some money to US and France and stuff for the damage they caused. Some people said that their hopeless state, caused by the punishment, helped motivate them to start WWII. I think these people are stupid. Germans were still living much better lives than those in South America. Just because they had a lot of debt to repay, didn’t mean that they had to start gassing Jews, and invading their neighbor. When America went through the great depression, crime actually went down. We didn’t invade our neighbors, when things got bad.

Anyways I agree that “State taxpayers should not be providing special treatment to an individual who supports violent jihad and the destruction of Israel.” I think we should try to isolate those who do “bad” things. We should reward good behavior. We should punish bad behavior.

But when should you deal with bad guys, and overlook the bad that they do, because you think talking to them will cause more good than bad?

Are any of you History majors? Could you weigh in on this? Roy Blunt was a History major. Maybe he would respond. His son endorsed Mitt. According to this, he is thinking about Mitt:

HH: So he has endorsed Mitt Romney’s presidential bid, correct?

RB: He has, yeah.

HH: So has he brought Dad with him?

RB: Well, you know, I like Mitt Romney. I think he has a lot be said for his leadership and his ability. I’m not there yet. I will tell you that you know, Matt Blunt also was the only governor that the Cato Institute gave an A rating in his conservative efforts to govern the state in a fiscally responsible way. So I don’t want to debate Matt Blunt’s choice here, but I’m waiting a while to make mine, and I think we’re lucky to have Mitt Romney run, but I think we’re lucky to have a number of the candidates out there this time, and I’m going to let the process sort itself out a little. I hope that Mitt Romney comes to Southwest Missouri again, and Newt Gingrich comes to Southwest Missouri again, and I’d like to see Rudy Giuliani come in as a great campaigner to get our troops charged up. We’ll see if any, which of these guys is the best candidate.

Roy, I hope to hear from you.

Regards,

~ Mike

Pelosi, Lantos may be interested in diplomatic trip to Iran

April 11th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in 2008, Iran, National Security

(04-10) 18:42 PDT — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Tom Lantos, D-San Mateo, just back from a trip to Syria that sparked sharp criticism from Republicans and the Bush administration, suggested Tuesday that they may be interested in taking another diplomatic trip - to open a dialogue with Iran.
The Democratic speaker from San Francisco and Lantos, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, were asked at a press conference in San Francisco Tuesday whether on the heels of their recent trip to the Middle East they would be interested in extending their diplomacy in the troubled region with a visit to Iran.

“Speaking just for myself, I would be ready to get on a plane tomorrow morning, because however objectionable, unfair and inaccurate many of (Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s) statements are, it is important that we have a dialogue with him,” Lantos said. “Speaking for myself, I’m ready to go — and knowing the speaker, I think that she might be.”

Pelosi did not dispute that statement, and noted that Lantos — a Hungarian-born survivor of the Holocaust — brought “great experience, knowledge and judgment” to the recent bipartisan congressional delegation trip to Israel, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia in addition to Syria.

Contrast the above with this:

Romney Speaks About Iran in Israel

This is the kind of thing that should push us that much harder to promote Governor Romney for President.

Hannity Transcript

Fox News has posted a partial transcript for Sean Hannity’s interview with MR 2008 yesterday in Iowa. They discussed fundraising, taxes, his new “Veto” ad, Ahmadinejad and Iran, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Iraq. Each of Governor Romney’s responses were superb, very well worded. Read it for yourself.

Also at the end they played a word association game that I thought was very interesting and even humorous:

HANNITY: Senator McCain.

ROMNEY: Friend. American hero. I’m not going to give you one word but friend.

HANNITY: Rudy?

ROMNEY: Strength in a time of real crisis.

HANNITY: Newt Gingrich.

ROMNEY: Brilliant. Wonderful idea generator.

HANNITY: Fred Thompson.

ROMNEY: You know, I don’t know Fred terribly well. I watch him on “Law & Order”, but he always seems to have the right answer.

HANNITY: Good answer. Hillary Clinton.

ROMNEY: Misguided.

HANNITY: Barack Obama.

ROMNEY: Inexperienced.

HANNITY: John Edwards.

ROMNEY: Two Americas. And he’s wrong. There’s one America.

HANNITY: Dick Cheney.

ROMNEY: Strength, resolve, maturity.

HANNITY: George Bush?

ROMNEY: Great heart. Great character. A man of passion and integrity.

HANNITY: Rosie O’Donnell?

ROMNEY: Who? Just just moonbeam. Out of touch.

HANNITY: Governor, good to see you. Thanks for taking the time to sit down with us in Iowa.

ROMNEY: Thanks so much, Sean. Good to be with you.

HANNITY: All the best to you.

ROMNEY: Thank you.

Too bad I missed it on TV. Someone has got to tell me about these things.

~Nate Gunderson

ADDENDUM: Jared Trent mentioned that there should be a video of the interview, and there is. It is only the first four minutes of the interview. Click here to watch. (Be patient through the commercial. It will come after it.)

ANOTHER ADDENDUM: More interview videos from Romney’s YouTube Channel: word association game, and one which is similar to the first video link above but a little longer (plus no commercial).

GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY SENDS LETTERS URGING DIVESTMENT FROM IRAN

February 22nd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Iran, National Security, Press Releases

Boston, MA Today, Governor Mitt Romney released a letter sent to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli urging that he pursue “a policy of strategic disinvestment from companies linked to the Iranian regime.” Letters urging support for this policy were also sent to New York Governor Eliot Spitzer and United States Senators Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer.

In his letter, Governor Romney wrote:

“With your new responsibilities overseeing one of America’s largest pension funds, you have a unique opportunity to lead an effort to isolate Iran as it pursues nuclear armament. I request that you immediately launch a policy of strategic disinvestment from companies linked to the Iranian regime. Screening pension investments and divesting from companies providing financial support to the Iranian regime or linked to Iran’s weapons programs and terrorist activities could have a powerful impact. New investments should be scrutinized as long as Iran’s regime continues its current, dangerous course.”

Governor Romney believes that for the United States, there are few more urgent priorities than standing up to the Iranian government’s dangerous actions. Eliminating financial support for this regime is a critical first step and will support future efforts.

Today’s letters build on the five-point strategy to prevent a nuclear Iran that Governor Romney laid out earlier this year at the annual Herzliya Conference in Israel. As part of that strategy, Governor Romney called for further economic isolation of Iran by pursuing, in part, pension fund divestment. In January 2007, Governor Romney also helped arrange a meeting between former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Massachusetts State Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill to discuss divestment of pension funds.

EXCERPTS FROM GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY’S REMARKS AT THE CONSERVATIVE MEMBERS RETREAT

I would have loved to have heard this one. To me this one ranks right up there among one of his best from reading the text. I especially loved the part about Iran, vs Hillary’s strategy.

Baltimore, MD Today, Governor Mitt Romney will make remarks at The Heritage Foundation Conservative Members Retreat a gathering of members of the conservative Republican Study Committee (RSC). Governor Romney will address his record of strong conservative leadership and the right strategy to deal with the threat posed by Iran.

Below are key excerpts of Governor Romney’s remarks as prepared for delivery.

Governor Romney’s Conservative Leadership:

“When I ran for governor, I ran as a fiscal conservative I had a background in building businesses, and I could tell there was a better way to run our state government. Massachusetts, like a lot of states in 2002, was facing a fiscal crisis and I wanted to help solve that crisis, without resorting to higher taxes.

“I am proud to say that we did just that but a funny thing happened along the way. The fiscal crisis was solved, but a new set of crises began.

“Massachusetts became a center stage for the most divisive issues facing our nation today.

“The issue of gay marriage came up. In the 2002 campaign, I was asked for my view on the matter, and I gave it I was then and remain today, opposed to gay marriages and civil unions.

“But a year later, judges decided to legalize gay marriage in the state the voters didn’t get to decide, the legislature didn’t get to decide, certainly I wasn’t asked for my opinion, and I guess 3,000 years of recorded history didn’t matter either. By a 4 to 3 margin, the judges on the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decided to redefine the institution of marriage.

“And meanwhile, just a few T stops from the Statehouse, over at Harvard; scientists were preparing to clone human embryos experimenting with human life itself.

“I didn’t ask for these issues to be put on my plate. But as Governor I didn’t have the luxury of silently sitting on the sidelines. I spent a lot of time looking at these issues, talked to a lot of people, and thought seriously about them and their implications.

“The issues of marriage and life are at the heart of a civil society. We need to be wary of those who experiment with life, who experiment with our kids, and those who toy with the building blocks of the family and society.

“The sad truth is that these experiments have been playing out for decades, and the ones who pay the price for failure are not the scientists, or the university sociologists, or the judges, or the liberal policymakers the ones who pay the price for liberal experiments sometimes don’t even have a voice. And it’s time they have a voice.

“So on the issue of life, this fiscal conservative became a social conservative as well. I’m committed to defending the institution of marriage, family, and human life.

“I believe in a divine creator. And I believe every single person in the entire world is a child of God and that as a civilized people we ought to respect life.

“I believe fundamentally that there’s nothing more important to society than the family.

“And I believe in treating all people with respect and dignity and tolerance despite our differences.”

Governor Romney On The Right Strategy To Prevent A Nuclear Iran:

“Someone else considering a run for the White House recently addressed the Iran issue, and you won’t be surprised to find out that I don’t agree with her approach.

“In a speech last night in New York City, Senator Hillary Clinton said that she needs to quote ‘understand’ unquote Iran better and to help her with her education process, that we should quote ‘engage Iran’ unquote.

“Friends, someone who doesn’t understand Iran hasn’t been paying attention at this point, we don’t need a listening tour with Iran. While I support gathering intelligence about our adversaries in any way possible, engaging is not the right policy. To the contrary, economic and diplomatic isolation must be our priority.

“Indeed, she argued that our strategy of engagement with the Soviet Union during the Cold War was a model for how we could deal with Iran. Now, for all the former Soviet Union’s flaws, at least they maintained a commitment to national survival. They were not suicidal. The same cannot be said about the Iranian regime. And we must stop making analogies that are disconnected from the world in which we operate.

“And someone who wants to engage Iran displays a troubling timidity towards a terrible threat.”

Mitt Romney Buffs His Conservative Credentials

Kevin Mooney
Staff Writer

(CNSNews.com) - America is at risk of becoming “the France of the 21st Century” unless policymakers curtail burdensome government policies and extravagant entitlement spending that work against the creative energies of free people, said former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Romney, who recently formed a presidential exploratory committee, delivered his remarks on Saturday at the National Review Conservative Summit, a gathering of conservative activists, lawmakers and pundits in Washington, D.C.

Romney said the “bar must be raised” in both domestic and foreign affairs at a time when Asian nations stand poised to challenge American primacy. The growing threat of “radical violent Islam” and the specter of a nuclear Iran also figured prominently in Romney’s talk.

Present-day superpower status will not necessarily transfer over the long term, he said, if American policy-makers entertain false notions about the true source of the nation’s strength.

Romney invoked the historical example of France to show how quickly once-great nations can lose power and influence when the wrong polices are embraced. To drive the point home, Romney quoted his father, who said, “Nothing is as vulnerable as entrenched success.”

Unlike liberal Democrats who view government as the greatest source of American strength, Republicans understand that it is the “hard-working, innovative, risk-taking, God-fearing, family-loving and freedom-loving” American people who make the nation great and ensure its superpower status, Romney said.

Americans are fully capable of meeting the challenges of the 21st Century, he continued, so long as they have greater individual freedom, lower rates of taxation, less cumbersome investment opportunities and a more efficient government.

Romney expressed support for making the Bush tax cuts permanent and pointed out that has signed the “Taxpayer Protect Pledge” (http://www.atr.org/pledge/index.html)

He also expressed concern over what he termed a “disinvestment in technology” by corporations, driven in part by a high number of lawsuits. Americans corporations spent more money defending tort claims last year, Romney contends, than they did on research and development.

He also addressed the growth of entitlement programs.

Spending in Washington is simply out of control,” Romney said. America’s long-term vitality is threatened by a mix of “pork-barrel” projects and extravagant entitlement expenditures, he argued.

Over two-thirds of federal spending will be directed to entitlement spending and the interest expense that goes with it by the time the next president finishes his second term, Romney claimed.

“How can we remain the world’s military and economic superpower with that kind of entitlement expense trajectory?” he asked.

While he was governor, Romney said he pursued free-market reforms in health care and “choice” initiatives in education that could be applied on the national level. He also detailed efforts aimed at eliminating unnecessary and wasteful spending in the state budget.

Foreign policy

Romney said the threat of “jihadism” is “woefully misunderstood” and in some respects underestimated.

A network of radical elements — including al Qaeda, Hizballah, the Muslim Brotherhood and others - is able to reach millions of people with a message that is “devastating to civilization,” and those radicals are working “to replace all moderate Islamic governments with a single caliphate and to govern all nations that have ever been touched by Islam,” he said.

“For that to happen, they need to crush the superpower that keeps the world order in check, [and] that’s the U.S. They want to collapse our economy, our government and our military.”

While this may seem like a far-fetched proposition to some, Romney argued that the jihad elements are “crazy but not stupid,” and have identified certain points of vulnerability, such as the “interdependent” nature of the U.S. economy.

Romney said Iran is “at the heart of the jihadist threat” and “must be stopped.”

Some of the key policy proposals Romney discussed included a call to indict Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for “incitement to genocide.”

He also outlined steps that could be taken both diplomatically and financially to isolate the regime in Iran. Romney, for instance, favors the imposition of restrictions on investments that would go to corporations doing business in Iran.

“Military options are not off the table,” he added. “Nor are they coming off the table.”

Cultural issues

Several high-profile issues assumed center stage in Massachusetts during Romney’s term as governor, including same-sex marriage and the role of the judiciary.

At a time when the state supreme court was ruling in favor of homosexual marriage, Romney said he did “everything within my power and within the law to stand up for traditional marriage.” He also expressed the view that marriage is not primarily about adults and adult rights but rather about “the development and nurturing of children.”

While he acknowledged he was once “pro-choice” and not always a “Ronald Reagan conservative” on the question of abortion, Romney said he has “changed his view.”

The turning point came, he explained, when he began to study stem cell research and found that a “bright line” could be crossed making it possible to create life simply for purpose of “experimentation and destruction,” he added.

From that point forward, Romney said he squarely aligned himself with the pro-life cause and sought to advance measures as governor that would protect the “sanctity of life.”
