Specter, Snowe, Collins Anger GOP Base

http://www.newsmax.com/newsfront/republicans_stimulus/2009/02/08/179583.html?s=sp&promo_code=79C7-1

NEWSMAX.COM

Three liberal Republican senators — Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, and Pennsylvania’s Sen. Arlen Specter — who pledged their support this weekend to President Barack Obama’s massive stimulus bill are drawing the wrath of many conservatives.

As news filtered through the media that a “deal” had been cut with the defecting GOP Senators — giving Democrats the 60-plus votes they need to overcome a Republican filibuster — Republican officials and pundits expressed outrage.

The bolting senators cited soaring unemployment numbers, the country’s worsening recession and the fact they cut about $100 billion off of the Senate Democrats’ proposed plan as key factors for their decision to betray the GOP Senate caucus to join with the Democrats.

But critics note that the Democratic “compromise” plan comes in at $827 billion — $8 billion more in spending than the already bloated House bill that called for $819 billion in new spending. They also note the so-called stimulus bill offers little immediate relief to the economy. According to a Congressional Budget Office report issued last week, only a fraction of the stimulus will be spent in 2009.

Though weekends are noted for slow news cycles, Collins, Snowe, and Specter already are finding they are under hostile fire, lambasted on conservative Web sites throughout the weekend and the subjects of angry calls by many of their constituents, according to reports.

“Arlen Specter is DONE,” wrote a blogger named steelfish on the FreeRepublic Web site. “He won his last primary by less than 1 percent against a real conservative of Pat Toomey. And only because the President Bush came to PA and campaigned for him. He is DONE.”

Specter is up for re-election in 2010. Washington Republican strategists tell Newsmax this weekend that Specter’s defection has sealed the deal: he will face a primary for the GOP nomination.

“We don’t care if we lose the Pennsylvania Senate seat to the Democrats,” one Washington strategist told Newsmax. “Better to remove Fifth columnists from the party.”

The sentiment was echoed in chat rooms and blogs across the web.

“They are frauds. RINOS” Republicans in Name Only, wrote a blogger named Croupier101 on the Fox News blog site.

On TV news shows Sunday, their Republican colleagues distanced themselves from the defecting troika — arguing that the small GOP support for the plan did not suggest Congressional Democrats or the White House sought a bipartisan stimulus.

“This agreement is not bipartisan,” Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

“I’ve been in bipartisan agreements, many. This is three Republican senators. Every Republican congressman voted against it in the House, plus Democrats. And all but three Republicans stayed together on this. That’s not bipartisanship. That’s just picking off a couple of senators,” McCain said.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said the trio’s support must have been disappointing to Obama, who has staked much on his ostensible ability to transcend the partisan divide.

“Having three Republicans, potentially, support it in the Senate out of 535 members of Congress is hardly a bipartisan effort. I think it’s a disappointment — surely must be for President Obama,” Cornyn told “FOX News Sunday.” He added he fully expects the bill to pass “with almost exclusively Democratic support.”

The three were the target of a furious national campaign by liberal groups, who besieged their offices with phone calls and emails urging them to support the stimulus plan. Without Democrats controlling a supermajority of 60 votes in the Senate, the trio’s support was essential in advancing the contentious plan to a final vote next week.

Their help more than likely will result in pushing the stimulus over the finish line.

In a video posted on YouTube, Republican Rep. Ron Paul said the three “caved in and went with the Democrats.”

The former presidential candidate, who has a sizable libertarian following on the Internet, especially among college students, praised his fellow House Republicans for unanimously opposing the stimulus. But he lamented that after eight years of the massive spending done under the Bush administration, Republican opposition was too little, too late.

“It is like they’re born-again budget conservatives,” Paul said. “Where were we in the past eight years, when we could have done something? And you see our last eight years that has set this situation up. So we can’t blame the Democrats for the conditions we have.

“We have to blame both parties and presidents of the last several decades to have generated this huge government.”

The stimulus package, which is expected to come in at about $827 billion when the Senate votes, includes tax cuts and credits and spending on infrastructure, education and other projects that supporters say will create and save jobs.

But critics contend the stimulus is nothing more than a laundry list of political payback to groups that supported the Democrats in the last election. They note that less than 5 percent of the spending goes to infrastructure projects.

Collins said she broke ranks with her party because of the progress congressional negotiators had made on the bill.

“Well, I know that some of my Republican colleagues are unhappy with the position that I’ve taken,” Collins told reporters Saturday. “I hope they will look at the fact that we were able to cut $110 billion of unnecessary spending from this bill. I think that’s a good accomplishment. I also think that it’s important that we do pass a stimulus bill to help turn the economy around.”

But Snowe and Specter have kept a low profile since the deal was struck. Despite their huge role, none made the rounds of the Sunday talk shows. Specter said Friday night that the agreement wasn’t perfect but it was necessary.

That assertion was greeted with wild derision on the Internet and with veiled scorn by other Republican leaders.

Julie Ann O’Brien, executive director of the Maine Republican Party, said she already has received plenty of e-mails from people across the country, the majority scolding the two Senators for their support of the bill.

“We have heard from both sides,” she told FOXNews.com. “We’ve heard from those who are pleased that Sen. Collins, in particular, has been willing to play and negotiate. And there are others who feel strongly that they are not acting like Republicans are supposed to act.”

O’Brien doesn’t anticipate any local political fallout for Snowe or Collins, noting that both won’t face re-election for several years and that voters are familiar with them.

“People know what they’re getting when they vote for them,” she said. “They lean conservative on most issues — that’s why they’re Republicans. But they really do, I feel, do what is right — not politically right but morally right.”

On Sunday, a liberal, union-supported issue advocacy group initially founded in 2005 to rally against President Bush’s Social Security reform plan was praising the three in ads in Maine and Pennsylvania.

“Senators Snowe and Collins have worked with President Obama and other senators to reach agreement on a plan that has support from a broad range of groups, including the US Chamber of Commerce and organized labor,” says the version of the ad in Maine.

“Call Senators Snowe and Collins today at 202-224-3121. Thank them for their leadership and tell them to keep fighting for a plan to get our economy moving again.”

But Collins, at least, has left herself some wiggle room on the final bill that emerges after House-Senate negotiations.

“Well, I know that some of my Republican colleagues are unhappy with the position that I’ve taken,” Collins told FOX News. “I hope they will look at the fact that we were able to cut $110 billion of unnecessary spending from this bill. I think that’s a good accomplishment.”

Yet she conceded that if a bill comes back from the conference committee with the House “once again bloated with wasteful spending and it’s too expensive, then I’ll vote against it.”

Gov. Romney Endorses Summers For Congress

I’d like to ask for some feedback from our Maine Mittheads. I don’t know anything about Charlie Summers and I am posting this not as an endorsement but as an FYI.

If you have followed Mr. Summer’s Congressional service, please post your comments. I’d like to get your take on his policy positions.

http://www.politickerme.com/jessicaalaimo/1632/gov-romney-endorses-summers-congress

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney endorsed Charlie Summers for Congress today.

Romney, a former presidential candidate, won the Maine Republican caucuses in February before dropping out of the race.

In a statement, Romney said:

“Conservatism’s strength is based in the belief in family, the individual, and the goodness of America and Charlie Summers embodies that strength. His experience in the private sector combined with his service as a Maine State Senator, as head of the Small Business Administration in New England, and most recently his service in Iraq make him the ideal person to represent Maine in the United States Congress. Charlie embodies the qualities necessary to effectively represent his constituency from the moment he is sworn-in as Maine’s next First District Congressman.

“Today, I am proud to endorse Charlie Summers and I encourage all my Maine supporters to actively campaign and vote for Charlie on June 10th.”

Summers said: “I am honored by Governor Romney’s support. Maine voters strongly showed their support for Governor Romney during the March Presidential caucuses and his strength among Maine voters will continue to build the momentum of this campaign through the primary and on to a win in November.”

Summers is running as a Republican in the First Congressional District.

Rocking the Republican Party

I received a comment from a couple of our regular readers, Paulee & Mike, from the great state of Maine. Many of you no doubt remember them from all the fun we had last week when they attended the Maine Republican Convention.

Well it seems that Paulee & Mike have just volunteered to help elect conservative Republicans this fall. Yes!! I have taken the liberty of posting part of their comments that have to do with their decision to get involved with their local Republican organization. I can’t over emphasize how important their decision is. They have now placed themselves elbow to elbow with the movers and shakers of their state’s politics. When the time comes to influence their state’s leadership in favor of Mitt Romney in 2012, they will be in a position to lobby for Romney in a way that no outsider could hope to.

Congratulations, Paulee & Mike! Keep us posted on your budding political fiefdom.

May 8th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Maine, Mitt Romney

Woo Hoo!! Here’s a chance to reinforce good behavior! The KENNEBEC JOURNAL is asking for reader feedback on their coverage of last weekends visit by Mitt Romney to the Maine Convention.

I thought they were “fair and balanced” in their reportage and here is a golden opportunity to give them an “atta boy” for a job well done.

If you liked their coverage, please go to their site and let them know. Look for my comment, at this point I am the sole responder. Let’s change that!

Are the Republicans on a roll?

We’ll see.

We covered the GOP state convention extensively over the weekend because Mitt Romney was speaking and it was in Augusta. (We’ll do something comparable with the Democrats.)

Let me know what you thought of our coverage of the GOP convention in Augusta. We played it very big on A1 of the Kennbec Journal and I’d like to know what you thought of that.

YouTube Highlights of Gov. Romney’s Speach in Maine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNu-PkSymJQ

Hat Tip to Will Martin for sending me the heads up on the availability of this video of Gov. Romney’s speech at the Maine Republican Convention.

The story about the flag that flew above one of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center on 9/11 is becoming famous in conservative circles.

Good to hear Gov. Romney delivering a speech with his characteristic insight.

Romney Touts McCain at Convention

By Walter Griffin

Saturday, May 03, 2008 - Bangor Daily News

AUGUSTA, Maine -

One-time presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has jumped on the John McCain bandwagon and told a cheering throng of Maine Republicans attending their state convention that he believed the party would retain its hold on the White House.

Romney, who won the party caucus in February before suspending his campaign a week later, told the 2,400 delegates gathered at the Augusta Civic Center for Friday night’s Presidential Banquet that the Arizona senator was the most experienced and tested candidate in the race and never was it more urgent for a person with those qualities to be called on to lead the country.

“We have to elect the man who has been tested and proven time and again,” Romney said.

Post Thoughts and Well Wishes for Mitt and Ann Romney

Paulee&Amp;Mike of ComittedtoRomney are hoping to hand deliver notes to Mitt Romney at Maine’s Republican Convention on May 2.

This is our chance to reaffirm our support of the best qualified man to run for President in this campaign and the man that some pundits and some voters are saying is a once in a lifetime candidate.

Lets show our support for a man who could well develop into the “face of conservatism” and in the process repudiate all the minor candidates that tried their best to stop Gov. Romney’s nomination by whatever means they could. Minor candidates who will now just fade away, while Mitt is back in the limelight, basking in the applause.

Let’s run up some big numbers on this post, so that our posters in Maine can let Mitt know that he has an army of supporters, ready to go to work to elect Mitt Romney President in 2012!

Run, Mitt, Run!!

Committed to Romney Posters Headed to Maine Republican Convention

Paulee&Amp;Mike of CommittedtoRomney fame and fortune are headed to the Maine Republican Convention on May 2. I have asked to be kept informed of “All Things Romney” at the convention. Paulee&Amp;Mike will be taking lots of pictures, so it should be a blast. The rest of us are soooo jealous.

Rumors about a possible VP berth for Governor Romney continue to abound, so it is good that this site has “boots on the ground” at the Convention and can give us the “lowdown on the showdown.”

Mitt Romney to Headline the Maine Republican Party State Convention May 2

April 26th, 2008 | 24 Comments | Posted in Maine, Mitt Romney

Very good news. The most qualified man to run for President since Ronald Reagan is set to be the keynote speaker of the Maine Republican Party Convention. MR keeps building the base and collecting the political IOU’s as he prepares to run for President in 2012.

~~John Cronin~~

http://kennebecjournal.mainetoday.com/news/local/5000135.html

AUGUSTA – Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will headline the Maine Republican Party State Convention next weekend in Augusta.

More than 2,400 Republicans are expected to come to the convention, which will be held in the Augusta Civic Center. Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2 at the convention’s Presidential Banquet.

In February, Romney won a straw poll of Maine Republicans by earning 52 percent of the vote. But after Super Tuesday, he was trailing badly and withdrew from the race.

“I think he brings name recognition, and is somebody that had a lot of support for president, and should get a good crowd to attend the banquet,” said Robert Nutting, chairman of the Kennebec County Republicans.

The next day, syndicated columnist Cal Thomas has been invited to speak at 1:15 p.m., although his scheduled appearance is not definite, party Chairman Mark Ellis said.

Updated Romney Delegate Count, The “Surge” is Working!

February 4th, 2008 | 18 Comments | Posted in John McCain, Maine, Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney

CNN’s Election Scorecard just updated with the Maine results.

I don’t understand how the process works. Yesterday I read an article about the Maine caucuses that said it was a first step in a “process” that would later elect delegates. I noticed last night that the brackets next to Maine were empty and didn’t show any delegates awarded to Gov. Romney. This morning they show MR as having won 18 delegates!

I’m assuming that CNN knows what it’s doing and that the totals are correct. If that assumption is right, then here are the new totals.

John McCain————97

Mitt Romney————92

Mike Huckabee———-29

So much for John “Open Borders” McCain as the “prohibitive front runner.”

Super Tuesday Voters!!!!!!………Ignore the MSM and vote for Mitt Romney!!!

During a news conference later in Minneapolis, Romney celebrated his Maine victory, noting it came despite McCain’s backing by the state’s two U.S. senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

“This is a people’s victory,” Romney said. “It is, in my view, also an indication that conservative change is something that the American people want to see. I think you’re going to see a growing movement across this country to get behind my candidacy and to propel this candidacy forward. I think it’s a harbinger of what you’re going to see on Tuesday.”

I don’t know about you, but to me this is disturbing…

First off, you got to love the MSM… Maine middle school to offer birth control putting this as their lead news story on their website.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — After an outbreak of pregnancies among middle school girls, education officials in this city have decided to allow a school health center to make birth control pills available to girls as young as 11.

King Middle School will become the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available, including birth control pills and patches. Condoms have been available at King’s health center since 2000.

Students need parental permission to access the school’s health center. But treatment is confidential under state law, which allows the students to decide whether to inform their parents about the services they receive.

Lets put this into perspective.

This is my daughter Jessica, she is 11 yrs old, the exact age that this school district in Maine is willing to give Birth Control Pills to…Look at her, can you imagine a school giving Birth Control pills to her??? It’s absurd to even contemplate it, much less do it.

Lets look at Governor Romney’s views on this topic…

From The Encyclopedia Mittanica

“In my service as Governor, I’ve never had anyone complain to me that their kids are not learning enough about sex in school. However, a number of people have asked me why it is that we do not speak more about abstinence as a safe and preventive health practice. Abstinence education gives young people the support they need in making the decision to postpone sexual activity until they are mature enough to handle the emotional, moral and financial responsibilities of parenthood,” he said. “This is more than teaching kids to say no – it will help them preserve self-esteem and build character.”

After initially posting this, it got me to thinking about Governor Romney’s campaign Ad “Ocean”, and that we should be reminded of just the type of person Governor Romney is…here’s a second look at “Ocean”.

Romney Stumps In Maine

October 18th, 2006 | 2 Comments | Posted in Campaign Appearances, Maine

Governor Romney is working hard pushing Republican Governors and Governor Candidates. This stop was in Maine to push for Chandler Woodcock. With a man like Governor Romney stumping for you that should give you a great shot. Good Luck Mr. Woodcock.

The latest in a parade of nationally known politicians came to Maine Wednesday morning. Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney stopped at D&G Machine in Westbrook to campaign for Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Chandler Woodcock.

The 2 men shook hands with supporters and employees. Romney is the chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association.

He says his group is really focusing its efforts here, because he believes Maine is a state the Republicans can win.

“There’s no higher priority for us than Maine,” said Romney. “Maine is a key state. We believe this is a state that is just crying out for new leadership.”

The Republican Governor’s Association has mounted a big television advertising campaign in support of Chandler Woodcock.

Romney says the group has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars here.
