Illinois

February 3rd, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Illinois

I saw Mitt today. He was awesome! He went to a local community college. I brought my 3 year old son. There was no were to stand. We were on the stairs at the entrance to the event, but the cops told us we were blocking traffic. There was standing room only, and I couldn’t find anywhere to stand were I could see him.

I have posted videos to YouTube before, but I wanted to capture the whole speech, and so I cranked down the quality on the camera. Well I guess I cranked it down too much, and it looks really bad, so I’m not going to even post it.

Here is a great write-up about it:

http://backyardconservative.blogspot.com/2008/02/romney-rally-in-illinois.html

The former speaker of the house, no, not Newt, but Dennis Hastert (a big Romney supporter) gave a great into. Dan Rutherford also helped with the into. He is awesome and very high energy.

When I got back home, I turned on CNN, and saw the CNN girl talking about what Romney said (why didn’t they just show part of it with sound). They showed a continuous loop of about 5 seconds of the rally with the sound off, unfortunately. I wish they would have had the sound on. When I got home my wife asked Jamed how he liked it. He said it was very loud, and hurt his ears…

I brought my book and wanted to get it signed, but I didn’t want to wait through the crowds with the wife at home on bed-rest…

Well, that’s about it for now, I better get back to the super-bowl.

Before You Vote For McCain on Super Tuesday…

Before you pull the lever for John McCain on Super Tuesday, please consider the following information first. As a Mitt Romney supporter, I would prefer to convince people why they should vote for my candidate, rather than against John McCain. However, I’ve tried this approach for the past 18 months, but people haven’t been able to get past his religion or the false impression that he’s a flip-flopper. As governor, Romney never contradicted a position he campaigned for in 2002 and while he did change his stance on abortion, he upheld his campaign promises throughout the end of his term. You can trust that the stances he is taking for America (which are decidedly different than the needs of Massachusetts in 2002), will be consistently adhered to while he is in office.

McCain on the other hand consistently changes positions, or blatantly lies about his record and the records of others. As accounts continue to surface about his private dealings with fellow legislators, staffers, and other private individuals, it is abundantly clear that John McCain is concerned about the one thing he’s always been concerned about—himself.

Perhaps you’ve resigned yourself to the “electability” argument, and believe that John McCain is the only Republican who could win in November. McCain will be the first one to tell you not to trust polls that come out 6 months before an election (just look at last July’s polling data for McCain). Additionally, you give the Democrats too much credit. As the economy and budget woes worsen, neither Hillary Clinton nor Barak Obama has any credibility to solve this impending crisis. On this issue alone, John McCain would be much easier to beat than Romney since he can’t run effectively on the economy. If we nominate John McCain, it will be like nominating Bob Dole all over again (and he was supposed to be the most electable at the time).

For all you know, everything I have just said could simply be made up charges for political reasons. So I ask you to take a look at the whole picture of John McCain’s life and his accelerated advancement through the naval ranks—in spite of his poor record and actions unbecoming of a Naval officer. As you read the following story of McCain’s Naval record, compare this with Mitt Romney and answer the following questions:

· Both had influential fathers, what did this give them in life?
· Both were accepted to prestigious universities, what did they do with that opportunity?
· Both had careers that ended in high-profile positions. How did they get there?
· How do their personal and family lives compare?
· What kind of people do they associate themselves with?
· What have these two candidate shown that they are good at?

In Illinois, Nine Republicans File for Presidential Primary

By Kurt Erickson LEE CAPITOL BUREAU

From an article published on Dec. 6, 2007

But to help their choice get nominated, Illinois voters must also cast ballots for convention delegates pledged to the candidate.

Springfield, Ill. The Republican presidential field in Illinois took shape with a flurry of last-minute filings on the final day to submit paperwork to get on the Feb. 5 ballot.

Barring any challenges, GOP voters will have a choice of nine candidates when they go to the polls for the earliest presidential primary in Illinois history.

Those filing include former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado and Jim Mitchell of suburban Chicago.

They join U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Sen. John McCain Of Arizona, former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee and 2004 Illinois U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes of Maryland, all of whom filed last week.

Despite the presence of more than 20 Republicans, Democrats and Green Party candidates on the Illinois ballot, the presidential race here is more of a beauty contest. The real battle will come over which delegates voters select on Feb.5. Delegates are committed to specific candidates and will do the actual nominating at next year’s presidential conventions.

Keyes and Mitchell did not file any delegates. Delegates for Huckabee filed in 17 of 19 congressional districts.

Presidential candidates for the Democratic Party and the Green Party already have filed to run.

A complete list of delegates is available at the Illinois State Board of Elections website: www.elections.il.gov.”

The Democratic Experience Gap

Ben Shapiro TOWNHALL.COM

Fine article by Ben Shapiro highlighting the “richly experienced” candidates on the Republican side versus the green beans on the Democratic side.

I don’t like Obama’s politics, but ya gotta love him for the way he is responding to Hillary’s attacks.

Here’s a sample.

“The fact of the matter is that Sen. Clinton is claiming basically the entire eight years of the Clinton presidency as her own, except for the stuff that didn’t work out”, Obama said.

“There is no doubt that Bill Clinton had faith in Hillary and consulted with her on issues, in the same way that I would consult with Michelle, [Obama's wife] if there were issues. I don’t think Michelle would claim that she is the best qualified person to be a United States Senator by virtue of me talking to her.”

Three years ago Barack Obama was a state Senator from Illinois. Now he wants to lead the world’s largest enterprise. He has not run a corner drugstore.

Hillary Clinton is the junior Senator from New York. Now she wants to lead the world’s largest enterprise. She has not run a corner drugstore.

John Edward’s served one term in the U.S. Senate before joining John Kerry’s losing presidential campaign. Now he wants to lead the world’s largest enterprise. He has not run a corner drugstore.

Mitt Romney turned Bain & Co. around and molded it into a highly successful business. He founded Bain Capital and his success there is legendary. He turned the Winter Olympics around and converted a $400,000,000 deficit into a $100,000,000 surplus. He rescued the state of Massachusetts from a $3 billion deficit and left office with a surplus.

The “Experience Gap” is overwhelming. While nobody can predict the future, I do believe that “what is past is prologue.”

That being said, I have to conclude that the “Performance Gap” between Mitt Romney and the Democratic light weights will be so enormous, that for the good of the country, the only viable option we have is to work for a Romney win in the primaries and then win the general election.

Romney in Chicago

June 15th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in 2008, Illinois

I left work a little early and drove downtown to see Romney. It was free, and I only had to pay $6 for parking.

There were about 50 people in the room before hand. Here is a bit of his speech from Jason Bonham. If you get a chance, subscribe to his videos.

Romney in Chicago

March 8th, 2007 | 4 Comments | Posted in Illinois

Governor Romney talked about holding the line on spending and taxes, creating jobs, tackling health care with emphasis on the private sector, (as he did in Massachusetts), investing more in energy at home (including offshore and nuclear), improving our schools, and our need to compete globally. He spoke of visiting troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as governor, and calling their families when he got back home. He said America’s strength flows from the goodness and ingenuity of the American people, and that we must keep alive the hope America offers for our children, and for the world.

The governor made the point that professional politicians aren’t penalized for talking without concrete results. In the private sector, if you don’t perform and deliver on your promises, you’re out.

Mitt Romney turned around a company, he turned around the Olympics and made it a success, he brought Massachusetts back into the black without raising taxes. Can he turn DC and the country around?

Well, I shook his hand and look forward to a good campaign.

If you go to the comments section you will see this comment:

As a trial lawyer who often repeats things that I say in one trial in another when I think they are good, I am constantly amazed at the breadth and diversity of what Romney has to say. Usually, when I follow any politician closely, I hear the same broken record over and over. Romney is constantly rearticulating his message, expressing it in different ways, elaborating on principles he has earlier stated, and linking up themes in new ways. He is a very intelligent speaker that way.

Romney at Univeristy of Chicago School of Business

October 13th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Campaign Appearances, Illinois

Jason Bonham at My Man Mitt has a great recap of Romney’s recent visit and speech at the University of Chicago School of Business for their “Distinguished Speakers Series.”

For those of us very used to his “stump speech” (which is great, by the way) he gives at political events this one was a nice change of pace.

Apparently, Jason wore the Napoleon Dynamite “Vote for Mitt” shirt to the event. They look like they’re available here.
