Going Against the Tide

“The Republican Party has become the party of the working man.” When is the last time I heard a quote like that?

If memory serves, 1988. It was Ronald Reagan, the candidate who brought the “Reagan Democrats” into the Republican Party. It feels so good to hear politicians talking like that again.

I’m sure the Democratic Party resents our “muscling in on their territory,” but hopefully, they’ll have to get used to it.

Congratulations to Linda Rapoza and the Fall River Republican City Committee for talking like Republicans who want to widen the Republican tent and represent small business people and blue collar workers who are being over regulated, over taxed, over burdened and under represented.

Southeastern Massachusetts is one of the most liberal regions in the entire country.
So what has inspired a group of local Republicans to think they can make political inroads?
The Republican party has become the party of the working man,” says Linda Rapoza, chairwoman of the Fall River Republican City Committee which held its inaugural meeting last April 15. “The Democrats have a stranglehold on the business community and you can’t run a business without being suffocated with bureaucracy.”

Rapoza talks about the “New Republican Party.”

“The New Republican Party is dealing with issues that affect the working person.
This means less business regulation, lower taxes, and smaller bureaucracy. If you can’t run a business then you can’t create jobs.”

One of the more popular topics at the group’s first meeting was fund raising which would help support candidates running for office in Massachusetts.

C.J. Ferry is running against Kevin Aguiar in the 7th Bristol District, Jeff Beatty is running against John Kerry for the U.S. Senate, Earl Sholley is running against Barney Frank to become the 4th District Representative, and Bob Heroux is running for Bristol County Registrar. The elections will take place in November.

Rapoza points out that of the four candidates, three run small businesses. Ferry runs a computer business, Beatty runs a security business, and Sholley is a landscaper.

“The Democrats have become elitists,” Rapoza says.

“They’ve become limousine liberals. One of our major goals is to alert people to this distinction. We want to see Fall River become a two-party system.”

The Republicans’ next meeting is May 19 at the Elks Club on No. Main St. near Airport Road.
It will begin at 6:30 p.m. The group can be reached through their website at www.fallrivergop.org.

Quelling The Grand Old Panic

I have always considered myself a Wall Street Journal loyalist and I always will be at heart, but Investor’s Business Daily is coming on strong. Another wonderful piece that should be required reading for the Republican National Committee.

Politics: Some Republicans fret that special-election losses portend disaster for their party this fall. But the most radical Democratic presidential nominee ever is actually a golden opportunity for the GOP to win big.

Ronald Reagan used to say the key to GOP victory was presenting voters with “a banner of bold, unmistakable colors, with no pastel shades.” Now, with Barack Obama as the Republicans’ likely opponent this November, there’s no excuse for pastel.

The fashionable notion is that the silver-tongued Obama will generate a coattail effect helping other Democratic candidates. Therefore, Republicans should be scared stiff and hope for the unlikely nomination of Hillary Clinton. But that’s nonsense.

Liberalism Is A Mental Disease

April 12th, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in George Soros, Liberal, Limbaugh, Mitt Romney, Reagan

I was just reading an article about the billionaire hedge fund speculator, George Soros, who funds organizations like MOVEON.ORG and also gives big money to the “527″ organizations that act as campaign surrogates.

The article talked about the extremely flattering coverage he gets from the MSM, including mention of an article by the NYT entitled “The Face of a Prophet.” In a recent interview in the FINANCIAL TIMES he blamed the recent financial market chaos on, are you ready for this?……

RONALD REAGAN AND MARGARET THATCHER!!

As Rush Limbaugh likes to say, “Folks, you can’t make this stuff up.”

Um, lets do some quick math. Reagan left office in 1988, that would be 20 years ago, right? According to Mr. Soros, he is in some mysterious way still able to affect the market with his policies from two decades ago. Wow, that’s real power!

Romney’s Ex-Friends

April 5th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Paul Weyrich, Reagan

Paul Weyrich should be ashamed of himself and Mike Huckabee is a disgrace to the Republican Party who would better spend his time trying to land a game show gig.

As if conservatives don’t get skewered often enough by the MSM, for no reason other than that we are conservative, along comes Paul Weyrich to flip-flop on his endorsement of Gov. Romney. If MR was presidential timber in November, how can he be persona non grata in April?

Mr. Weyrich was an early supporter of Ronald Reagan, so he should remember The Gipper’s famous 11th Commandment: “Thou shall not criticize another Republican.”

I’d rather be criticized on a point of policy than to have an endorsement rescinded. In the real estate business they say: Location, Location, Location. In politics the guiding policy is: Loyalty, Loyalty, Loyalty.

If you don’t think your endorsements through, then maybe you shouldn’t be in the endorsement business.

So, is it possible that Mitt Romney was the best choice for the Republican presidential nomination, but is unacceptable at vice-presidential nominee? For conservative heavy-hitter Paul Weyrich, the answer seems to be “yes.” “A group of social conservatives has launched an effort to keep Mitt Romney off John McCain’s ticket,” explains Jonathan Martin of the Politico.

“Under the rubric of an obscure PAC called Government Is Not God, a coalition of longtime Romney opponents and past supporters of Mike Huckabee have created a website and are buying print ads that resurrect the former Massachusetts governor’s past abortion and gay rights stances.”

So far so predictable, but here’s the twist: “The group does, though, include one high-profile Romney backer. Veteran movement conservative leader Paul Weyrich endorsed Romney in the heat of the primary before throwing his support to Huckabee after Mitt got out,” Martin writes

Massachusetts Ballot Initiative: Abolish State Income Tax

Hat Tip To SED!

Below is listed a comment from one of our readers in Massachusetts. I understand from SED’s comment that MA. has a ballot initiative to abolish their state income tax! This coming from one of the most socially liberal states in the country. I wonder if this is the start of a trend?

I also noted that SED would like Mitt Romney to spend time in the state rebuilding it’s Republican Party if he is not picked for the VP spot. This is what I was writing about in my post “Participatory Democracy.”

It is very encouraging to hear from readers like SED and to be kept informed of the grassroots efforts in other states to steer the country back toward the conservative principles that set off the economic boom of the Reagan years.

~~John Cronin~~

SED on 05 Apr 2008 at 2:07 pm

This election cycle has the potential to be big for the mass gop. We have the abolishment of the state income tax on the ballot as well as great candidates for the US Senate. I hope that if Mitt is not chosen as McCain’s VP, he will spend some considerable time here rebuilding our party in this state. Massachusetts maybe a socially liberal state, however I believe the fiscal conservatives will have a great shot this year due to fear of an imminent recession. In one year, Mitt’s surplus is now a 1.6 billion dollar deficit under the dem’s super-majority!

John Cronin

SED, thanks for the great feed back! I was thinking about Missouri’s income tax about a month ago when I filed my taxes. Our rates have been steadily creeping up for the last few years and I was thinking we need our state politicians to start the process of getting Missourians some tax relief.

The locality where I live now has a 7.3% sales tax as well. Hats off to the citizens of Massachusetts for their income tax ballot initiative. Wow!

Is John McCain Facing A Landslide Loss Of McGovern Proportions?

Many of our readers are no doubt too young to remember Senator George McGovern. He was a radical anti-war Democrat (anti-Vietnam war) who plied his nefarious trade during the 1970’s. He has, thankfully, not been an elected official since 1981. He was so far out of the mainstream of American politics that he richly earned the distinction of suffering the second worst electoral defeat in American history. And yet he somehow won his party’s nomination. Is this story starting to remind you of anyone?

John McCain’s support of the illegal immigration amnesty bill last summer angered Americans more than any one thing that I can remember. Have we collectively forgotten our anger at this man and his attempt to ram this bill through the Senate with no public hearings and virtually no debate? Have Evangelicals forgotten that he referred to some of their leaders as “agents of intolerance?” McCain claims that he will appoint “strict constructionist” judges to the SCOTUS and yet he criticized Justice Alito for “wearing his conservatism on his sleeve.” You know what, Senator McCain? I like people who wear their conservatism on their sleeves.

He claims to be pro life, but his McCain/Feingold anti-free speech legislation has hindered groups like the National Right to Life Committee in their efforts to get their message out. I don’t want someone as the Republican party’s standard bearer who simply tries to “talk the talk”, I want someone who “walks the walk”. And McCain ain’t that someone.

Because our fellow conservatives have been asleep at the wheel, because the primaries were moved up months earlier than customary, because Indies and Dems get to pick Republican candidates in open primaries, because the MSM will prop up anybody who will help them further their liberal agenda and trash anyone (Reagan in 1980, Romney in 2008) who dares to champion conservative principles, we now appear to have, as our presumptive nominee, John “Open Borders” McCain who may well prove to be the Republican party’s version of George “Landslide” McGovern.

Below is some information from WIKEPEDIA that illustrates what happens to politicians who stray too far from the beaten path.

~~John Cronin~~

In the general election, the McGovern/Shriver ticket suffered a 60%-38% defeat to Nixon — at the time, the second biggest landslide in American history, with Electoral College totals of 520 to 17. McGovern’s two electoral vote victories came in Massachusetts and the District of Columbia; McGovern failed to win his home state of South Dakota, a state that had delivered for the Democrats in only three of the previous 18 presidential elections in the twentieth century[9]. In his telegram to Nixon conceding defeat, McGovern wrote, “I hope that in the next four years you will lead us to a time of peace abroad and justice at home. You have my full support in such efforts.”[10]

Building The Reagan Coalition, Phase II

I don’t ever recall seeing the comments section of this blog so active. Thanks to all for your interest in ALL THINGS ROMNEY and for your energy.

I wanted to touch on some of the points and comments that I see as being, in my mind, most prominent in the discussions.

One of the points that I see actively talked about is the new “write-in” strategy. I am not willing to concede anything to McCain or to Huckabee, but if it becomes necessary to adopt this strategy, several good things will happen.

1. None of us will get into the regrettable habit of voting for Democrats. You are familiar with the old saying: “Friends don’t let friends vote for Democrats.”

2. We will punish the Republican hierarchy for pushing a fairly liberal Democrat, er, I mean Republican as the party’s nominee. I don’t want to punish the party’s rank and file, just RINO”S like Crist, Schwarzzenneger and Mel Martinez. Psychologists tell us that rewarding bad behavior encourages more bad behavior. How embarrassing would it be for the RINO leadership to have pushed McCain’s candidacy so brazenly, only to have real Republicans write-in Romney’s name en masse?

3. Unlike voting for, you’ll pardon the expression, a Democrat, (any Democrat) a write-in will show up distinctly in the voting tallies, rather than being buried, to a certain extent, in the general election vote totals. I know, exit polling would measure it pretty well, but a write-in strategy would paint a clearer picture.

4. It will send a message to the party establishment that they can’t win without us, no matter how they may hold us in distain.

5. It will settle the religious bias controversy for everyone except the “invincibly ignorant” that if they insist on using this as a strategy, we will use our 35% voting bloc to over ride their 25% voting bloc.

6. It is light years more effective than “sitting the election out.” I am firmly convinced that the Democrats would like nothing better than for us pesky Reagan coalition voters to stay home and forfeit the game. Politically speaking, the general election is the SUPER BOWL. Nobody forfeits that contest. It’s what you work for all season long.

We have also talked a lot about the need to rebuild the Republican party. The current leadership needs to go. I love that old saying: “Politicians are a lot like a baby’s diaper. They need to be changed often and for the same reason.” One of our commenters talked about getting involved in a local election, I believe in a judge’s election. That’s what I’m talking about! She will get to be known within her local party’s membership and over time, access equals influence. Rather than hope the Old Guard will support Mitt in 2012 if it comes to that, why don’t we replace some of them now with Romney supporters? That way we will control the party apparatus.

Reagan built his coalition by working the grassroots for four years. Using the platform of his radio broadcast, traveling all over the country giving speeches that reinforced conservative principles, meeting and convincing voters from all walks of life that conservatism is in the best interests of the country. That is something Mitt Romney has not had a chance to do. You can build up a boatload of political IOU’s that way.

We may yet end up in a brokered convention, but that’s not for sure. Something completely unforeseen could cause us to sweep the remaining states. Never underestimate a hot head like McCain. Who knows what he might say if he explodes. The stories coming out of the U.S. Senate about his profanity-laced tirades suggest that he could change the dynamics of this race at any moment.

And finally, keep in mind that we now have identified the strongest conservative in American politics, Gov. Mitt Romney. His name recognition is now off the charts, his grassroots organization is now battle hardened and experienced. His national campaign staff is the envy of the rest of the campaigns. His fund raising strategy can now develop over a four year period and he will have the necessary time to develop a national network of political support. If, and I do mean if, it turns out that 2008 is not our time, we are in great position to take over the party, barn storm the country and finalize the work of “BUILDING THE REAGAN COALTION, PHASE II.”

Romney Should Follow Reagan Example

I admire Mitt Romney’s grit and determination and I agree that he should take the fight to the convention. The stakes are too high to do anything else.

In the event that we do not win there, then I believe Gov. Romney should follow the advise given in the article below.

ROMNEY SHOULD FOLLOW REAGAN EXAMPLE

Maybe it’s like 1976.

Maybe the Republican Party needs to go through a cleansing. Maybe it needs to be torn down so someday it can be built up again.

In 1976 the Republican bosses rejected Ronald Reagan. They mocked his conservatism and went with the liberal, Gerald Ford. We were coming out of the Nixon era, a time when about all anyone agreed on was that the Republican president had been a disappointment.

The party went with a liberal and a dynamic young guy out of Georgia – who campaigned on a platform of change – got the Democratic nod. It was a centrist establishment Republican against a Democrat outsider and the Republican candidacy went down in flames.

And America got Jimmy Carter, the most pointless president of the Twentieth Century.

Maybe this year is like 1976.

George W. Bush is Richard M. Nixon. Republicans can’t wait for him to go and Democrats absolutely loathe him. He is what people want to change, they just want to turn the page and move on to something better.

Either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton play the part of Jimmy Carter. Both have exciting candidacies that are very short on specifics. Both have the potential to be absolute failures as presidents. Like Carter, they have the potential to be one-term wonders. They have the potential to follow liberal priorities right into the swamp Jimmy Carter mired the nation in.

Somehow, Barack Obama chants things about hope in a way that gets more votes than when Jesse Jackson chanted things about hope. Somehow, people have decided to read into the Obama candidacy every unresolved political fantasy of their lives. Somehow, the media and the Democrats have decided – with a straight face – that Barack Obama is the second coming of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King.

Hillary Clinton has likewise taken on mythic proportions in the enthusiasm of her supporters.

But both Obama and Clinton will do well not to fall flat on their faces once in office.

And it’s quite likely one of them will be the next president of the United States.

Because of this year’s Gerald Ford – Senator John McCain.

He is the sort of soulless candidate who can inspire only through fear. He is a man without abiding political principle, a war hero whose war ended two generations ago. A man who in no way represents the philosophy or values of his party.

A man grassroots Republicans are going to turn their backs on.

This year is like 1976.

And Mitt Romney is Ronald Reagan.

This year, the Republican bosses are going to deny Mitt Romney the nomination. They are going to cynically play politics, they are going to go with the liberal they think can win, and they are going to value victory over principle. They are going to forget the fact that Republicans who abandon principle for success invariably end up with neither.

So it will be Jimmy Carter Take Two and Mitt Romney will go into the wilderness.

But if he is smart, he will follow the example of Ronald Reagan. Reagan used the years from 1976 to 1980 to continue his daily radio commentaries and to travel the country speaking to whomever would listen to him. He perfected his understanding of the Constitution. He spoke to group after group, preaching the simple straight-foward gospel of freedom, self-reliance, respect for life and the glory of being an American.

And at the end of four years he had not only his party’s nomination, he had one of the biggest general election margins in history.

He persisted and he prevailed and he became president of the United States.

That needs to be Mitt’s plan.

He got robbed this go ’round. His party abandoned not just him, but its own bedrock. Mitt needs to spend four years internalizing the gospel of conservatism and constitutionalism. He needs to get this stuff in his bones. And he needs to preach it across the country.

This year is like 1976.

We’ve nominated a liberal and we’ve rejected a potentially great leader.

The one will be gone soon, and – if he’s wise – the other will start preparing now for 2012.

This year is like 1976. And that one didn’t go very well for us.

Rueters/CSPAN/Zogby Poll has Romney up by 3%

By: Hugh Hewitt

TOWNHALL.COM

Sorry I can’t provide the link. I evidently clicked on something I shouldn’t have and I removed the URL window from my browser. I’d appreciate your help in restoring it. Thanks in advance.

In the meantime, great news coming from battleground California. According to Reuters/CSPAN/Zogby, Gov. Romney is leading California over “Open Borders” McCain 37% to 34%. Below are a couple of quotes from the article.

~~John Cronin~~

If the swing towards Romney in California continues, he will emerge from Tuesday’s contest in a solid second place with a new narrative and a renewed debate about the race –can Romney surpass McCain in Ohio and Texas in March? The rapidly fading Huck would simply disappear, as he is doing in many places where the obvious has already registered: A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain.

As the Arizona numbers underscore, McCain would not even bring a marginally united party with him. Given his animosity towards Romney, McCain wouldn’t add Romney to the ticket ,and the die-hard opponents of McCain will spend the next nine months hammering on how Huckabee blocked the consolidation of the conservative vote thus allowing the Reagan coalition to be eclipsed. Many would get over it and pull the lever for McCain, but how many would work for him or contribute to his coffers? And how many irreconcilables does it take to doom the campaign from the start –5%? 10% Not many, especially when it comes to the purple states of Colorado and Ohio.

Eisenhower and Ford did not win us majorities in congress. They were both moderates. Newt and Reagan won us majorities. They were conservatives. We don’t win by agreeing with democrats. We win by having a smart guy who is capable of making great arguments. Think of Newt. Think of Reagan.

McCain: Super Tuesday May End The GOP Race

February 3rd, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in February 5th, John McCain, McCain Lies, Mitt Romney, Reagan

CNN POLITICAL TICKER

This very brief article proves, that if you are John “Open Borders” McCain, you can cram a large volume of dopey statements into a very small space. Here’s the first one.

1. “From what we see in the polls, there is a very good chance it could be over on Tuesday,” said the Arizona senator, adding: “The sooner we get that done, the sooner I can go to work on uniting the party.”

Stop kidding around, alright?…….”the sooner I can go to work on uniting the party.” Sen. McCain, if you are the Republican nominee, you will put the party through a meat grinder, and what comes out on the other end will in no way resemble anything like the Republican party that Ronald Reagan helped to build. You will never “unite” the party because you agree with almost nothing that this party stands for. I have already witnessed scores of people talking and writing about how they will work to oppose everything you will try to do to this country, because they think you will take the country in the wrong direction.

2. Despite his complicated history with the party’s base, he said, pragmatic Republicans will back him when faced with the Democratic alternative.

Why would we want to back McCain? The “Democratic alternatives” are virtually carbon copies of McCain. If we get McCain, we get Hillary’s policies. If McCain wins the Republican nomination, we just lost the election, because no matter what happens from that point forward, we get a liberal Democrat in the White House.

3. The senator also dismissed a Drudge Report story that he had met with former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and weighed joining the Democratic Party. McCain told reporters Friday that he had met with Daschle at the Democrat’s request, but had just laughed and reaffirmed his GOP loyalties when asked about the prospect of switching parties.

The best way I know of to “reaffirm” GOP loyalties is to at least occasionally vote with the Republican party. On ANWR, tax cuts, GITMO, campaign finance, immigration and energy caps and taxes, if their are any areas where McCain has “reaffirmed” his GOP loyalties, I’m not aware of it.

What Republicans Need to Know before they vote!

I just received this email from Trent Christensen. He is saying what the MSM will NEVER say. They will never admit that John “Open Borders” McCain is a paper tiger and even with the help of tens of millions of dollars in free publicity, Mitt Romney is still in McCain’s rear view mirror and getting ready to pass him on the right!

With the fawning, adoring press shamelessly promoting this liberal Democrat, and attacking Mitt Romney 24/7/365, McCain should be leading by 30% points. It is a testament to Romney’s bulldog tenacity and to his supporters competence that he has been able to endure the withering assaults of the press, the Democrats, the entrenched Washington bureaucrats and some members of his own party and is still, despite it all, fighting the good fight and doing so with good humor and enthusiasm.

Please feel free to send this to all your friends and family members and to use it as a “talking points memo” as you make your rounds this weekend.

Subject: What Republicans need to know before they vote! (PLEASE FORWARD)

Dear Fellow Romney Supporters,

We have heard a lot of feedback from Romney supporters all over the country that feel like they are not getting the real picture about Governor Romney’s chances of winning the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Many people say that the information they do receive always paints a picture of Governor Romney as losing this race. You are entitled to know how Governor Romney is truly doing in this race. PLEASE FORWARD this information on to friends and family and help get the word out about the truth about Governor Romney’s campaign!

The TRUTH is this: Governor Romney CAN and SHOULD win the Republican nomination for President of the United States. This is a two-man race between Governor Romney and John McCain and Governor Romney is literally only a few points/delegates behind! Senator McCain would like everyone to believe that somehow Governor Romney is too far behind to ever catch up. That is NOT true. We need to rally behind Governor Romney, because only a slight increase in support among conservatives is all that’s needed to tip the scales in favor of Governor Romney and conservative change!

People shouldn’t think that McCain has this rapped up. They need to understand the tremendous support that Governor Romney already has. Consider the following:

1) Governor Romney has led for most of this race and is still positioned well to win the nomination! Until recently Governor Romney has handily led the delegate count. Though he is currently in second place in the delegate count since the Florida Primary, by CNN’s count Governor Romney has 6% of the support he needs to win and John McCain ONLY HAS 8%. Translation = Governor Romney is not trailing far behind; in reality, he is right on McCain’s heels and is well-positioned to succeed in the upcoming primaries because he is the true conservative.

2) Governor Romney is the True Conservative in this race. Governor Romney supported the Bush Tax Cuts and supports making them permanent, he supports appointing conservative judges and justices like John Roberts and Samuel Alito, and he will confront and defeat radical Islamic Jihad, end our energy dependence on foreign oil, curb federal spending, and sustain traditional American values. But don’t just take my word for it.

3) True conservative thinkers all support Governor Romney. For a small sampling, consider the following sources:
- Michael Reagan, son of President Ronald Reagan:
http://www.townhall.com/Columnists/MichaelReagan/2008/01/31/john_mccain_hates_me

- Mark Levin:
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NDEzMDYzZjBkMDNhYjk0ZjdhZmJlZWNkMWQ1NjI4MGI=

- Sean Hannity: “I’ll tell you right now, and I’ve not announced this, but I will be voting for Mitt Romney in this campaign. It’s the first time I’ve stated it publicly. I’ll state it now.” (”Sean Hannity Radio Show,” 1/31/08.)

- Laura Ingraham: “All right, I’m going to see your endorsement and raise you an announcement: February 12th is the big D.C. primary, I’m pulling the lever for Mitt Romney. No doubt about it. No hesitation.” (”The Laura Ingraham Show,” 2/1/08)

- Lars Larson: “It’s time for the GOP to pick a real Republican standard bearer. I’ve been keeping my powder dry on this question for months till I had the chance to talk to all of the potential nominees. I’ve done that now, and I’m left with only one conclusion. Governor Mitt Romney is the best choice for 2008.” (”The Lars Larson Show,” 2/1/08)

4) Governor Romney has National Support: Listed at the bottom of this email are just some of the additional names of the endorsements of Governor Romney from elected officials, national figures and several publications and newspapers. (Feel free to add yours as well when you forward this on!)

5) Governor Romney has tremendous financial support, from people just like you. Not including ANY of Governor Romney’s personal contributions to his campaign, Governor Romney’s campaign has raised more money than any candidate in the history of the Republican Party! He has raised roughly $20 million more than John McCain thus far. And that financial support remains strong; in fact, the day after placing second in the New Hampshire primary—what some were calling a “big loss” to McCain—Governor Romney held a fundraiser and raised $5 million in one day. By comparison, the democrat winner in NH, Hillary Clinton, also held a fundraiser that day and raised only $700,000. This relates directly to his ability to stay the course and beat the Democrat nominee in November.

6) Governor Romney is the most electable Republican because he can fight the fight. I just mentioned money raised. Money will mean a lot in the coming months! John McCain is currently spending as much money as he brings in and is $4.5 million in debt. The Democrats have raised hundreds of millions of dollars and if Senator McCain becomes the nominee, he will have no money with which to compete with the Democrats. The Democrats will bury him with the sheer size of their war chests. He CANNOT compete with them financially.

7) Senator McCain CANNOT beat the Democrats. You cannot beat the Democrats by acting like a Democrat. John McCain has sided with the Democrats on issues from supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants, attacking the 1st Amendment with campaign finance reform, opposing drilling for oil in ANWR to reduce our reliance on foreign oil, and he voted TWICE against the Bush tax cuts. John McCain was reported to have considered running as John Kerry’s running mate in 2004. You can’t beat Democrats at their game, you need someone who talks AND acts like a true Republican leader. That is clearly not John McCain; that person is Governor Romney.

We need to unite NOW behind Governor Romney. People ought not to vote for John McCain simply because they aren’t given all the information about how strong Governor Romney is as a candidate. PLEASE FORWARD this on so that those who believe in having a strong military, and a strong economy, and strong families know that Governor Romney CAN win this election.

Governor Romney is as strong as ever in this race. And with all of us united behind true conservative principles, Governor Romney WILL win. Please forward this email on and vote for Governor Mitt Romney.

Best regards,

Trent

Romney’s Ideal Victory

Hat Tip to Ranzel for bringing this excellent analysis to our attention. Mitt Romney is nailing down the Reagan coalition.

Romney’s Ideal Victory

NEW YORK TIMES

Tags: Florida, John McCain, Mitt Romney

Does Mitt Romney have a victory to cling to in Florida? Joshua Trevino, vice president for public policy at San Francisco’s Pacific Research Institute (and one of the founders of the conservative blog RedState), breaks down the numbers on his personal blog.

“Mitt Romney is in a bad way,” Trevino writes. “He blew through $10 million in Iowa and lost; and outspent McCain eight to one in Florida, and lost that too. But for all this, Mitt Romney is not done yet and the reason lies in the breakdown of this evening’s Florida vote.” He continues:

CNN has the exit-poll numbers, and they reveal some surprising things:

* Romney won pro-lifers.
* Romney won the mainstream religious. (Huckabee won the very religious less than one-fifth of the pool.)
* Romney won the Protestants.
* Romney tied Huckabee with Evangelicals.
* Romney won the pro-GWB voters.
* Romney is the primary second choice of Giuliani voters, Thompson voters …. and McCain voters.
* Romney won the immigration hard-liners.
* Romney won the upper-middle class, earning between $100,000 and $200,000 annually.
* Romney won the terrorism-oriented voters.
* Romney won the self-identified conservatives and the self-identified very conservative.
* Romney won the values-oriented voters.
* Romney won the white voters.
* Romney won the tax-cutting voters.

In short, Mitt Romney won the Republican Party’s idea of itself and that, too, is a big deal. If you’re white, Protestant, anti-abortion, go to church on Sundays, think well of the President, want lower taxes, hate terrorists, make a good living, want to do something about immigration, and live in Florida, chances are you voted Romney. The question before Florida was whether McCain could win a closed Republican race, and now we know he can. The question now is whether he can win conservatives and in Florida, he did not.

Calling it like it is

Mitt Romney stands head and shoulders above McCain when it comes to the economy.

End of story. Well, okay, here’s some background.

McCain and the Bush Tax Cuts

John McCain is constantly being asked about why he voted against the Bush tax cuts (twice), an act Mitt called “failing Reagan 101.” His explanation is that the cuts needed to be accompanied by cuts in spending. He continues to justify his actions with this rationale, prompting George Will to encourage Governor Romney to make the following question central to his campaign: “When the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010, who do you want to be President: Mitt Romney or John McCain?” I personally am hoping to keep my taxes low, thanks, so I’m voting for Mitt. But it’s clear: tax cuts help the economy, and restraining spending in the short term will harm the economy. McCain gets an F for his first (and second) tries at Reagan 101.

Mitt vs. McCain on Today’s economic issues.

But there’s more to this story. The economy is teetering on the brink of potential disaster. We’ve all seen the signs: financial markets tumbling; oil prices surging; a mortgage market meltdown; banks writing down huge amounts of assets; American manufacturing jobs being lost to overseas competitors who aren’t playing fair; the trade deficit; the weak dollar. The list goes on and on, prompting the head of the Federal Reserve to nearly use the R word (recession) in front of Congress a few days ago, and prompting the Fed to slash rates early yesterday. But hope is not lost: we have a presidential candidate with experience in the economy, having made his investors hundreds of millions of dollars. And he has a few good ideas.

Mitt’s Economic Stimulus Package

To these troubling economic signs Mitt Romney has responded with a stimulus package of nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars. It includes rebates like President Bush’s plan, but also exempts seniors from paying social security taxes. And in a stroke of pure genius that’s truly Reagan-esque, highlighting why we need a man of Mitt’s expertise and intellect in the White House, Mitt’s plan also includes a proposal that would give the economy the kick in the shorts it needs: it would allow companies to expense capital purchases for two years.

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to say a quick hello and introduce myself as a rookie blogger here at Elect Romney in 2008!  I’m pleased and excited to jump in here and do my part to help Mitt’s run for the White House!

A bit about me:  I’m 37, mother of 4 and wife of 1, living in snowy, cold, rural, beautiful, northern Nevada.  I’m originally from Canada, have lived in the U.S. for several years, and just recently got my U.S. citizenship.  What a great and humbling experience!  I really feel at home in this incredible country!  There is a spirit and a strength and a power here - a patriotism that is unlike any other.

I became a Romniac, Mitthead, Mitten about a year ago after Mitt made his announcement.  I started coming to this blog shortly after and quickly became an addict, as I know many of you have (you might have seen me comment as Nevadagirl).  The founder, the bloggers and, based on their comments, the readers, are all very impressive and articulate - it’s great to be part of this!

During the Nevada caucus, I had the chance to stand up and speak for 2 minutes on why I support Mitt.  It felt great to vocalize to others the reasons why I feel Mitt is our best choice and hope.  My challenge to you guys is to be prepared to do the same.  With the upcoming importance of Feb. 5, many of you will have the opportunity to share with others why you support Mitt in your own state and in your own circle of influence.  Here’s a short version of what I said:

I support Mitt because I’m looking for 2 things in a President.  One - a conservative record and platform, someone that supports the 3 legs of the Reagan coalition - strong military, strong economy, and strong families.  Two - someone who has a resume that shows he actually has the executive skills and personality to lead and accomplish his Presidential To-Do list.  Mitt’s record in Massachusettes shows an ability to fight for conservative principles and policies in a highly liberal environment.  He is one of only 2 true conservatives running.  His experiences in the private sector and as CEO of the SLC Olympics unequivocally show that this is a man who understands what it takes to solve extremely difficult problems.  No one else running comes close to his track record of success in this area.

Obviously the important thing is to say what works for you.  Let us know about any great experiences you have had sharing your support of Mitt!

Here is a pic of Mitt at a rally in Orlando today.
