Romney a Confirmed Speaker at Maine Convention

Attention Maine Mittheads: If you are anywhere near Augusta, make sure your video camera’s batteries are charged and head on over to the Maine Republican Convention to see the Republican Party’s new rock star, Mitt Romney.

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=26237

Mitt Romney – who took 52% of the vote at Maine’s Republican primary in February – will speak at the banquet the first night of the convention, said Maine Republican Committee Administrative Assistant Michelle Dale. She said Romney is a confirmed speaker, but said that could change. She also said she does not know the topic of his address. Cal Thomas will also be speaking at the state convention on Saturday.

If you go …

The Maine state convention will take place Friday, May 2 and Saturday, May 3. It will be held at the Augusta Civic Center (100 Civic Center Drive, Augusta, ME 04330). Friday’s events will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will end with the presidential banquet featuring Mitt Romney by 9:30 p.m. Saturday’s events will begin 8:30 a.m. and will end by 5:30 p.m.

A state committee meeting and dinner to kick off the Republican state convention will be held Thursday, May 1, from 6 to 9 p.m., also in the Augusta Civic Center.

Heading down to San Diego :)

February 5th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in California, Campaign Appearances, Rally for Romney

Hey Everyone,

Sorry I couldn’t really “write-up” anything last night. I was extremely tired, and the rally last night caused me to have this major headache so looking at the monitor really was the last thing I wanted to do. But, it was an incredible event. I can’t tell you how exciting it was to be sitting (and standing) up there on stage behind our great candidate Governor Romney. It was so cool to see the crowd from that angle. I believe I kinda stunned Governor Romney being there, and he was so gracious to give me about two minutes of his time as he was swarmed by crowds of supporters. I also appreciated Matt allowing me to get the picture of him and his new baby, that was precious. I also loved that I knew so many people from previous Romney events (like Lou Sheldon from the Faith Speech in Texas), and of course Jim Davies whom I’ve been emailing back and forth with for what seems like forever now. This event definitely will leave an indelible mark on my psyche for a long time to come. I also loved phone banking with the great people that I did it with. Their spirit and tenacity just kept everyone going. As soon as you’d get a “good one” you’d share it with others, and the same with them and it just kept our momentum strong throughout the entire time. Also seeing someone wearing “my” t-shirt was just incredibly AWESOME! Later, she put on one of my Elect Romney in 2008 buttons (the one with his face on it), and one of my mini CTR (Choose the Romney) buttons. It was just so cool. Then, a friend of hers was sporting one as well. :) It was just so awesome! I’d have to say that the best sign that I saw was a FHE w/Mitt one. For those of you who aren’t LDS our church has one night a week (called Family Home Evening..aka FHE) where you come together as a family (normally it’s on a Monday night), and you share a lesson or just be with your family. Well, since Mitt did his rally on Monday how funny to see a sign saying that. How appropriate. Made me really laugh. :) Now I head down to SD to hopefully “close the deal” for Romney. GO MITT! And to those of you in Primary or Caucus states HIGH TAIL IT TO THE POLLS AND VOTE FOR ROMNEY, and encourage all of your friends and family to do the same!!!

Thanks again to all of you for what you do, it’s so appreciated!

Ann Marie

P.S. I visited the Reagan Library yesterday morning, took almost 500 shots there, when I get home I’ll get some of the best ones and post them here. That was one heck of an awesome thing to do. I wish I could go there whenever I wanted, what a way to reflect and just meditate. What a wonderful place, and even more wonderful man!

It Took Two Weeks In The Spring Of 2007 To Defeat McCain-Kennedy. It May Take Less In The Winter 2008 To Defeat Just McCain

Posted by: Hugh Hewitt  at 10:18

…But once the conservative voice begins speaking as one or nearly one, it is very effective, and that began to emerge on Thursday after the Reagan Library debate.

When Rush declared on Thursday that a “vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain,” the focus became very, very clear for conservative voters –who heard it.

That message has been repeated a few times by others from Laura Ingraham to Mark Levin and most of us in between, as well as by folks like Rick Santorum and Denny Hastert.  Messages take a while to get delivered, but they eventually get there.  McCain is using endorsements from the political elites like Arnold and Rick Perry to blunt the new media, and MSM is pushing back with an “inevitability” narrative that is nonsense even as realistic assessments give McCain a great advantage going forward.

But the picture is very clear and voters see it:  McCain or Romney.  Huck doesn’t have a shot, an thus a vote for him is a vote for McCain.

Romney doesn’t even have to spend much more money to communicate this or the crucial differences between him and McCain on taxes, the First Amendment, judges, climate change, and especially illegal immigration.  He now has the new media on board and amplifying his message.  If there is movement towards Romney on Tuesday, he has many incentives to stay on through St. Paul, and especially through Ohio and Texas in early March.  He gets more earned media every day from here on than any candidate has enjoyed on the GOP side since the campaign began.  That’s a huge force multiplier and it is just coming to bear on the race.

But the reality is that “Rally to Romney” is the dominant story in the conservative new media.  The results won’t be clear until Wednesday morning, though polls like this Rasmussen in Missouri and Rasmussen in Tennesssee which show McCain with a narrow and falling lead of only 3 points underscore how volatile the race is.  A Romney win in either of these states certainly propels the campaign forward to Texas and Ohio at least.  (This Tennessee poll has Romney ahead.)  Four days is a very long time in 2008.

A Huckabee voter on Tuesday could have a lot of reasons for sticking with Mike, but one of them cannot be protecting the legacy of Reagan or the platform of the GOP as it has existed since 1980.

The choice is very clear, and Republicans have a long weekend to think it over.

Rally for Romney — Orange County, CA

THANK YOU to all those who participated tonight across this great nation of America in the Rally for Romney events. There were about 100 volunteers that attended our rally in Irvine, CA tonight.

Ann expressed gratitude to everyone attending the many rallies tonight. She said that what was being done at the rallies across America tonight had never been done before in presidential politics.

In the pre-meeting with Ann, she provided some insight into all the planning that goes into the many fund raisers and campaign stops. Tonight, the Governor was at the rally in San Diego and she said one of her sons was at the Las Vegas rally. Her brother was at the Florida rally. As the pre-meeting was ending, she had to leave for about 45 minutes to give an interview to the CBS News affiliate in Los Angeles (KCBS, Ch. 2) with Stacy Butler. Ann said that she and Governor Romney were hopeful that tonight’s nationwide rallies would bring in many first-time volunteers as well as new contributors through their efforts.

Ann was asked how she and Gov. Romney are holding up. She said she is “doing great”. One of the organizers tonight told me the Romney’s are making four to six campaign stops a day, working 14 to 18 hour days every day. Gov. Romney has had a cold lately, but he is over it now.

Mrs. Romney expressed gratitude many times during the evening. She graciously went from table to table to meet people. She was most optimistic and full of energy and expressed her confidence that “we have a good strategy to win the nomination” and that “we have the best candidate.”

Kevin Gabisini (Newport Beach), Cold Calling. This was Kevin’s first time working in any campaign.

Lisa Cowan (Laguna Beach) and her husband (Bob) received several $1,000 donations as well as many other contributions.

Steve Samuelian (Laguna Beach) has been a huge supporter of the Governor since Day One. He is always there for Mitt!

Daniel Seminario is an Orange County campaign volunteer who assists in driving for Ann whenever she is in town, which has been often these past months.

At the barbeque event I attended in Irvine a few weeks ago, Gov. Romney commented that what keeps him going at a high energy level every day is getting out across America and meeting so many wonderful people. Mrs. Romney has said that many times as well. I got to chat with Daniel tonight for about 10 minutes and he is a great example of the “great people” to whom the Romneys refer. Every time I have the privilege of attending any of these events, I come away completely impressed by the caliber of people Gov. Romney is attracting at the grass roots! This is work. But without exception, every person involved is cheerful, happy, excited, optimistic, and determined. For those reading this post: If you ever wanted to make a difference in the world, in America, now is the time to get involved. It really is fun. Governor Romney is going to be the Republican nominee and why not join the winning team now!

My daughter, Melissa Abernethy (San Clemente) making her debut into presidential politics.

Erin & Kristen Riley (San Clemente) with Ann. This is their first time campaigning; Jan Riley was also at the rally.

Marian Clayton (Boston) & Lisa Clayton (Newport Beach) worked hard keeping everything running smoothly during the rally. Marian is a marketing manager working full-time in the Romney for President campaign; she is the person charged with organizing tonight’s event in Irvine, CA. Marian could not disclose results, but she informed me that they met their goals for both attendance and contributions for the evening.

Mitt in Silicon Valley

September 25th, 2007 | 5 Comments | Posted in 2008, Campaign Appearances, Mitt Romney, Rally for Romney

Mitt was in Silicon Valley yesterday. I had the opportunity to see him at two different events. First was an Ask Mitt Anything in Santa Clara. In the evening my wife and I attended a reception at Meg Whitman’s house (CEO of eBay and National Finance Co-Chair).

The AMA was very energizing. There were probably ~300-350 people in the room. It was standing room only. He started with his regular stump speech talking about his background in the private sector, the fact that our country is at an inflection point with all of the challenges foreign and domestic that we face, that we Republicans need to clean our own house and the change begins with us, and the differences between himself and the Democrat candidates.

He then focused a bit on some of his signature issues: lower taxes, including zero tax on savings, interest, dividends, universal health insurance, but not with a government take-over a la Hillary care, committing to win the war on Islamic Fascism (with some commentary on Ahmedinejad), strong military, strong economy, and strong families.

After his prepared remarks, he took about 45 min of Q&A where he covered entitlement reform, SCHIP, Immigration, Education & NCLB, and Greenspan’s recent criticisms of Republicans. Interestingly he got no questions about the War in Iraq or the broader war on Islamic Fascism. Not sure why that is. Perhaps people are tired of talking about the war. Or, perhaps people don’t perceive a large difference between the Republican candidates on the war, so they focused on domestic issues.

Overall, it was a great event and well received. When Mitt finished, he was given a standing ovation by the audience.

Later that evening, my wife and I attended a fundraising reception at Meg Whitman’s home. It is a large New England style home with a large and beautifully maintained back yard. It was a perfect venue for the event.

Meg started out by introducing Mitt, talking about her days at Bain & Company and how everybody wanted to get on Mitt’s case teams because of his reputation for being a great manager, mentor, and coach…someone you could learn a lot from. She then talked about his track record at Bain Capital, the Olympics, and as Governor of Massachusetts.

Mitt then spoke for about 15-20 minutes. It was a different speech than the one he gave in the afternoon, though hit many of the same themes. It somehow felt a bit more relaxed. Perhaps that’s the difference between being at a formal banquet facility vs. at a good friend’s house in the backyard.

After the remarks, again Mitt took questions for about 45 minutes. This time the questions focused on the War against Islamic Jihad, Iraq, and Immigration. A couple other questions…I think there was one on education, but overall, much more focused on the war and immigration. Again, not sure why that was, but it is an interesting contrast.

The highlight of the evening for me was after the remarks. Mitt spent some time shaking hands and mingling with the crowd. I got to shake his hand, get his autograph, and snap a photo with him on my camera phone!

Overall, a big day for a big Mitt fan! I am even more energized to do whatever I can to help him get the nomination. Seeing him in person reinforces how well spoken, thoughtful, smart, and capable he is. He has great presence. Very approachable and friendly, but also carries himself with great dignity. I can definitely see him as our next President.

Our Rally for Romney in the Bay Area is coming up! For those of you in the Bay Area, details are below after the jump…sign up here! Not only do you help Mitt get the nomination and build his supporter base, you’ll get an exclusive Mitt bobble-head doll as well!

Alternatively, if you don’t want to call, but you do want to give, click here! The important thing is to support Mitt.

By the way, Romney just won the Michigan Straw Poll (story here). This makes four out of the six early states where he’s got a demonstrated lead (Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and Michigan). Romney is well positioned to go all the way, but the next three months are going to be a “kill zone” where his opponents are going to train all their firepower on him. He will need all of our help to propel him to the nomination!

Electability

September 22nd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in 2008, Fundraising, Mitt Romney, Rally for Romney

Excellent presentation by Spencer Zwick and Alex Castellanos at the Romney Campaign about campaign strategy and Mitt’s electability. Please check it out.

It’s crunch time now for Q3. If you consider that folks in New Hampshire may have their absentee ballots by early December, we only have a couple more months before the first votes are cast!

Turning in a stellar fundraising performance in this quarter will provide Mitt a huge boost of momentum to help carry him through to his first victories in IA and NH! All donations big and small count! Remember, Rudy edged out Romney by only $1M in Q2. If every one of Mitt’s new donors had just given another $20 we would have tied Rudy.

That extra small donation of $100, $50, or even $20 really does matter. That one additional person you call to get them to donate makes a difference. All of the efforts we make, small and large, in aggregate add up to big numbers which translate into Mitt’s message getting out and generating the momentum we need to get him to the White House.

Click here to sign up for the Rally.

Click here to here to make a donation.

Mitt can’t do it without us!
