GLENN: Gosh, I think it was a year and a half ago I said, gang, the only thing that’s going to matter when this election rolls around is the economy. I know everybody thought I was absolutely out of my mind crazy nuts when I said we are in big trouble and we could be facing another Great Depression. I don’t know what we’re facing now but we are facing dire, dire things in front of us. Every play has to be played exactly right. You know, when I say that, I want you to know that it’s going to be a great time in the future to be an American just like it was on September 12th. September 11th you didn’t want to go through, and in ‘99 I was telling you Osama Bin Laden was coming and there would be bodies in buildings in the streets of New York in 1999 and nobody wanted to hear it then, and there were. And let me give you the same kind of warning there’s going to be real trouble ahead, but the next day comes and we’re America again. And I said this to you a year and a half ago that the only thing that they were going to be arguing about in the end is going to be the economy and that’s why I said Mitt Romney was the guy to lead us. He was just with John McCain in Cleveland. We go to Mitt Romney now and I want to get some handle, Mitt, on have you ever seen a candidate like Barack Obama be more clear that he is a Marxist and people not listen.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Rally, Glenn, it’s interesting. I haven’t been around forever and I’m 60 now and in my lifetime I do not recall a presidential candidate who had a more antijob program than does Barack Obama. He plans on paying people off by giving them a check, you know, sending a check to everybody, a $1,000 check. But I think the American people would far rather have a job than a one-time $1,000 check. And his plan kills job. John McCain’s plan will actually create jobs. Barack Obama’s would take a recession and turn it into a deep prolonged recession, or worse. And, you know, I just think Barack Obama at this time is exactly the wrong course for America.

GLENN: Did you hear the — did you hear what he said in 2001? Finally the tape has been released and surprisingly not by the mainstream media, what Barack Obama has said about the Constitution? Have you read the transcripts or heard the tape?

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Yeah, I did. I heard that he again is, you know, sad that the Supreme Court wouldn’t deal with redistribution of wealth and it’s a very different economic approach than the one that’s created America as the most powerful economy and the most powerful country in the world. You know, right now, of course, no one’s thinking about redistributing the wealth because wealth is disappearing, and redistributing wealth, that was the policy that, well, that some in Europe and other places in the world adopted and it led to economic failure.

GLENN: Okay. He is saying that he’s got — Barack Obama’s saying that he’s got this jobs creation program. As a businessman, I mean, I’m a small businessman. You’ve been a large businessman your whole life. Tell me the frothing at the mouth that people, just chomping at the bit to get that $3,000 that Barack Obama will give you for every new job created here in America. That’s his job growth plan. Tell me how great that is for business.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Well, I’m afraid that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the economic risk you take in hiring additional employees, and people take that risk if they see a bright future. And if they’re looking at higher taxes for their corporation, higher taxes for them individually, if they’re looking at fees or penalties for not having a healthcare plan that Barack Obama finds acceptable and if also they are looking at new efforts to unionize small business through this card check program Barack Obama’s in favor of, they’re simply not going to be thinking about growing jobs here. I listened this morning to a CEO of a major employer. I won’t mention his name but a very large employer. He employs over 100,000 people. And he said, look, you know, Barack Obama’s policies will cause us to build plants in places other than the U.S., and it is a job-killing program. We’ve got to support a job program like John McCain’s. John McCain is talking about cutting taxes on corporations, it immediately sounds horrible to people because of the perversion that we’ve allowed to happen, you know, with our press and everything else, where corporations are evil, where rich people are evil. Explain, if you will, to you know the average person that is struggling, busting their butt. Why a corporation getting a giant tax cut, why that makes a difference in creating jobs here in America as opposed to other countries.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Well, the simple fact is that corporations can decide where they are going to reside, where they are going to do their business. And they can be here, they can be in Ireland, they can be in Canada, they can be anywhere they want in the world and right now America and Japan have the two highest corporate tax rates in the world and so as businesses think about locating a new facility or even moving their corporate headquarters, they are free to go wherever they want. They are not like U.S. citizens that don’t have citizenship in a place like Hong Kong or China or Japan. They can go wherever they want. And so if you have high taxes, high corporate taxes, you cause businesses to go somewhere else. It’s as simple as that. In Ireland, for instance, the European Union, they said, you know what, we’re going to have the lowest tax rates. And sure enough businesses flocked to Ireland. They created scores of new jobs. People had high paying jobs. It was good for the people and it was good for the government as well because they got taxes from all the people paying income taxes. The answer is always create growth, create jobs. A job is so much more of an economic benefit than is a check from government.

GLENN: Mitt, let me talk to you not about politics and no about either of the politicians. Let’s just say we’re having this conversation the day after and whoever’s won, whoever won, okay?

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Yeah.

GLENN: I said earlier this morning I believe this is the most important — and I will say this the day after the election, no matter who won. This is the most important time possibly in American history. The problems that face us, the decisions that we have to make, the time to know who we truly are and what we truly believe in, the values of America, we must reconnect with them because this is quite possibly the most important time in our country’s history. Do you believe I’m overstating that?

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: No, I actually think you’re right, Glenn. You know, in my campaign stump speech I used to say almost that, which is this is an extraordinarily critical time for our country. We face challenges from without. We face a new stronger China, we face Russia using energy to propel their new power and we face global jihad. So we face three fronts, if you will, from a national security standpoint. And then our economy is facing some tough competitive challenges. And if we become a second tier nation economically, we will have a hard time defending our freedoms. This really is a “Make it or break it” time for America.

GLENN: I know we have to let you go, you have other things scheduled but we’d love to have you back sometime this week if we could. I’d like to talk to you a little bit about the importance that Russia and Venezuela and Iran and what — everybody is looking at oil saying, oil, this is great, it’s going down. They are talking now it could go down to $46 a barrel, which would be great at the pump, but it is a colossal danger because these countries that we depend on for oil are now becoming extraordinarily unstable economically. Could we spend some time with you maybe later this week if we can get the schedules together?

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: I’m out campaigning for John McCain but we’ll keep in touch.

GLENN: Okay, thank you very much.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY: Thanks, Glenn.

“ARTICLE VI” the Movie Debuts to Large, Enthusiastic Crowds in California and Georgia

Flag Waving

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE AND THAT YOU PURCHASE THE DVD THAT IS NOW FOR SALE.

Tonight (1/14), with my wife and several family members and friends, we drove to Newport Beach to watch the screening of the new film ARTICLE VI. Atlanta also had a screening of the film tonight at a packed house. The theater at Lido Isle holds about 500 people and it looked like there were about 450.   At the end, Hugh Hewitt, Executive Producer of the film and Reed Dickens, Producer answered questions. Hugh asked the audience by raise of hands how many members of the LDS, Protestant, and Catholic faiths were present. Roughly, the mix was 30%, 50%, and 20% respectively. [see brief review below the film's poster]

Click here to go to the film’s online site ——-> http://www.article6themovie.com/index.php

I highly recommend this documentary to everyone — It is outstanding in every way!

Brief Review:

This film is a documentary. Though I found it very interesting, informative, and even entertaining, it is a documentary. As I listened to conversations around me and with the creators of the movie, people were most enthusiastic.

The movie combines a wonderful mix of music, interviews, video and film footage of historic and current events. Beloved patriotic music was arranged to different melodies and played by a single acoustic guitarist as background to footage of religious strife and intolerance across America. Interviews were primarily of evangelical leaders, including Richard Land, university religious and theology professors, and “woman-on-the-street” interviews among others. There were a large number of different individuals that were interviewed across the country and of many different Protestant faiths.

Some of those interviewed represented the hard-core evangelical point of view of, if-you-are-not-evangelical-you-will-go-to-hell, to the more tolerant, what-would-Jesus-do-if-he-were-here-today points of view, best articulated by David French (co-founder with wife Nancy of EvangelicalsForMitt.org) and Richard Land (at the end, I spoke briefly with Hewitt who said he thought David’s commentary was the best of all those interviewed — David is serving in Iraq as JAG for the Army near the Iranian border today). All in all, I thought the large number of people interviewed and the various points of view provided balance and were fair in presentation.

Fascinating to me, and to most people attending, were the outstanding commentaries by religious/American historians illustrating the many examples of religious bigotry and intolerance this nation has endured from the early days of the Pilgrims in Massachusetts where Quakers were hanged, to the presidential race involving Thomas Jefferson (deist) in which it was feared that the country would become less believing by electing a non-believer. In our nation’s history, various forms of religious intolerance played an important part in many presidential races including that of the JFK who eventually became the first non-Protestant (Catholic) President. In fact, several clips from Kennedy’s amazing and eloquent speech in 1960 to the Texas ministers in Houston were used liberally throughout the film.

Though Governor Romney’s name and photograph (from print articles) were shown a couple of times briefly and there were several examples of religious intolerance against members of the LDS Church (Haun’s Mill Massacre) as well as by LDS Church members (Mountain Meadows Massacre), the film was not about Romney or religious intolerance only involving The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Examples of intolerance involving the LDS Church were simply the most frequent and recent examples of many examples provided in the film. HH

In the discussion we had with Executive Producer John Carosella, Kevin Anderson asked him why they made a decision to exclude clips of Governor Romney’s “Faith in America” speech from last month. He reiterated that the film was never intended to be strictly about politics or about a current presidential candidate. He said the film is intended to be a cultural statement that is intended to stir debate among people of diverse religions to encourage them to find the humanity and friendship in others of completely different faiths.

The narrator of the film (Bryan Hall, I think??) and the person conducting most, if not all, interviews is LDS. However, I believe all the other creators of the film are of different Christian faiths and political persuasions (John Carosella told us he is “a liberal” and with a great laugh said he will be voting for “someone on the other side!”), including Reed Dickens and Hugh Hewitt who are evangelicals.

After the screening, a question was asked as to distribution to political camps and candidates. Dickens said the movie either has been sent or will very soon be sent to every presidential candidate and many members of congress and other national leaders. So look for publicity eventually as candidates are asked for their opinions about the film. Incidentally, Hewitt responded to a question about whether America has matured to the point in which evangelicals can vote in large numbers for someone not of their faith like Governor Romney, as they have not (more than about 25%) in the first three contests. He said he thinks they can. However, he said he was most disappointed in the level of bigotry he has seen thus far in the race. He also said that he is very disappointed that Mike Huckabee has not publicly demanded the end to all religious intolerance that exists today; that he has the power to make a big difference in this way and he has not (not exact quotes, but my attempt to capture the spirit of what he said in a long answer).

Those present that I saw included Ann Romney’s brother, Jim Davies and John Schroeder of Article6Blog.

For all upcoming screenings, click here and scroll down. I highly recommend you purchase the movie and show it often, especially if you live in a future primary or caucus state! This movie is definitely one you will want in your film library.

Mitt takes religion questions head on in NPR interview

Mitt runs the table in an interview with NPR’s Robert Siegel.

I recommend you listen to the whole thing, but here’s my favorite part at the very end:

[Siegel] One last point: In the CNN-You Tube debate, there was a moment when one of the people who submitted a question asked all the candidates whether they believed in every word of the Bible, and two of your rivals — Mayor [Rudolph] Giuliani and Gov. [Mike] Huckabee — both made a point of saying, “Well, in some parts it’s allegorical, in some parts it should be interpreted, but yet, I believe in the Bible.”

And you seemed — if I read you right — to make a point of saying it’s the word of God, and even when considering some modification, you backed up, said, “No, I’ll just stick with that. It’s the word of God.” [That] left the impression — and I want to ask you — do you hold a literal belief, say, in the Genesis version of creation?

[Romney] You know, I find it hard to believe that NPR is going to inquire on people’s beliefs about various parts of the Bible in evaluating presidential candidates, and actually, I don’t know that that’s where America has come to — that you want to have us describing our particular beliefs with regards to Genesis and the Book of Revelations, so —

[Siegel] I raise Genesis only because creationism is a national issue in a variety of ways, and —

[Romney] Well, but then you could ask me a question and say, “Do you believe that we should teach creationism in our schools, in our science classes and so forth?” and I’m happy to give you an answer to that. But I don’t know that going through books of the Bible and asking, “Well, do you believe this book? And do you believe these words?”, that that’s terribly productive. Particularly when we face global jihad, when we have 47 million people without health insurance, when we have runaway costs in our entitlements, to be asking presidential candidates about their specific beliefs of books of the Bible is, in my view, something which really isn’t part of the process which we should be using to select presidents.

My point is the Bible is the word of God, and I try and live by it.

Touche! Mitt is going to do just fine on Thursday…have no fear.

Check out a nice analysis at AlphaPatriot of Romney’s speech today in Nevada.

Also, he has a download of the entire speech minus a bit at the beginning and a bit at the end. :)

While you’re there leave a nice comment. Another thing to note is that he’s a Fred supporter.

“Asking Mitt - An Interview with Governor Romney”

September 19th, 2007 | Comments Off | Posted in 2008 Election, Audio, Interviews, Mitt Romney

To listen (MP3) to the complete interview of Governor Romney by NRO’s Stephen Spruiell click here.

I’d like to copy the whole article but I’m technically not supposed to, so here are some highlights:

It’s only Wednesday, but already it’s been a busy week for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who is, of course, currently running for the Republican nomination for president. Since Monday, he held a press conference denouncing Hillary Clinton’s much-discussed national health-care plan, wrote a letter urging U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to bar Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from addressing the U.N., and unveiled a 68-page policy document titled, “Strategy for a Stronger America.” On Tuesday, Romney spoke with National Review Online about his week so far.

Strategy for a Stronger America” lays out dozens of Romney’s policy proposals on every issue from radical jihad to federal spending but says very little about the most important issue on the national agenda for the foreseeable future, Iraq.

I asked Romney at what point he would consider moving beyond sanctions to military action against Iran. He says, “It is essential for us… ultimately to build the kind of consensus in this country and among our friends that would allow Ahmadinejad to recognize that the military option is not just on the table, it’s in our hand.

“The more support and the more confidence that exists in such a plan on the part of the world, the more Ahmadinejad will recognize the peril of his current posture,” he says.

“My view in Massachusetts was, here’s a good plan for our state,” Romney says. “It’s not necessarily a good plan for everybody else’s state. So my view is, the federal government should give each state the financing flexibility they gave us to allow each state to craft their own plan.

“Now, if they want to copy parts of what Massachusetts did, fine,” he says. “If they want to create an entirely new plan of their own, that’s fine too. But let the states develop their own plans that match the needs of their own populations — not a one-size-fits-all HillaryCare solution.”

Regarding the importance of early primary states:

“Actually, I think the early contests are more significant than they’ve been in the past, in part because they come so quickly prior to the Super Tuesday,” Romney says. “If somebody does well in the early primaries it would be very hard for someone else to try and reverse that momentum — just not enough time to raise the funds and go up on TV and try and change the momentum.”

One week:

All by Wednesday? That is a busy week.

“THE MAKING OF MITT ROMNEY”: Boston Globe Offers LOADS of Info/stories on Romney

It will take me a few days in may spare time to process all this information, but make sure to check out the Boston Globe’s “The Making of Mitt Romney” 7-part special edition. There seems to be over a dozen of detailed and lengthy articles highlighting different phases throughout his life.

I’ve been reading just about everthing Romney-related for over a year now, and I’ve learned lots of new things more about him after just spending the last hour going through less than a quarter of it.

One thing that I’ve noticed so far from the peices I’ve read is that it’s pretty hard to find one of Mitt’s personal contacts from his past that have anything bad to say about him.

Thoughts? Impressions? Favorite Parts/Quotes?

Love him or hate him, Stephen Colbert can be funny. The video below of him lampooning Fred Thompson’s laziness is very funny.

By the way, the quotes from Time Magazine are real.
