Character and the Primaries of 2008

May 31st, 2008 | 8 Comments | Posted in Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, MSM

PEWRESEARCH.ORG has an interesting article on how the MSM have treated Obama, Clinton and McCain through the early primaries. They have produced a chart showing the number of positive articles written about each of the three candidates. Conservatives have often been accused by the left as being a bunch of whiners when it comes to our claims of bias towards any conservative Republican. The chart in the article won’t produce any chest-clutching surprises, but I think its still worth a look to have the PEW organization re-confirm what we have long contended.

The trajectory of the coverage, however, began to turn against Obama, and did so well before questions surfaced about his pastor Jeremiah Wright. Shortly after Clinton criticized the media for being soft on Obama during a debate, the narrative about him began to turn more skeptical — and indeed became more negative than the coverage of Clinton herself. What’s more, an additional analysis of more general campaign topics suggests the Obama narrative became even more negative later in March, April and May.

On the Republican side, John McCain, the candidate who quickly clinched his party’s nomination, has had a harder time controlling his message in the press. Fully 57% of the narratives studied about him were critical in nature, though a look back through 2007 reveals the storyline about the Republican nominee has steadily has steadily improved with time.

Matt Romney’s Thoughts on the Eve of Tsunami Tuesday

Flag WavingUnfortunately, I was unable to attend the rally tonight in Long Beach. Matt Romney kindly granted an interview which I conducted over the phone as he drove home to San Diego with his family. Since I did not have a recorder, and don’t have the skill of short-hand, this is my best transcription from my notes:

“It was a remarkable turnout in the tight time frame we had.   I was sitting in the Denver airport yesterday and got a call from my dad who said he was going to California the next day and asked me, ‘can you bring some friends?’   I put the word out and look at the amazing turnout we got!   A friend of mine said he did a rough count of those in attendance and counted about 2,000; with one day’s notice!   I think this remarkable turn-out, on such a short notice, is indicative that my dad’s message is resonating with the people of California.”

Since I could not attend tonight, I asked Matt who, besides himself and Governor Romney, were in attendance at the rally. He said that Jim and Becky Davies (Ann’s brother and sister-in-law) were there along with Congressmen Dana Rohrabacher (R-46th), John Campbell (R-48th), and Buck McKeon (R-25th). Also there, was conservative talk show host, constitutional law professor, and author Hugh Hewitt.

He continued:

“After the rally, I chatted with Congressman Rohrabacher about the surfboard he presented to my dad last week at the rally in Fountain Valley [CA] and joked that as we get closer to the general election this year, we need to get my dad back out here for a surf party and (stealing a line from someone else) ‘ride the wave of conservative momentum right up to the general election!’

..

A number of people from around the state of California, who have the pulse of the people, have told me that in the last four to five days, the momentum has shifted and picked up for us. I feel pretty good about our chances here in California of getting more delegates than John McCain will get tomorrow.

The mainstream media has been wrong time and again and we will prove them wrong again. We need to get every conservative voter out to the polls in every state tomorrow to vote for Mitt Romney and prove the mainstream media wrong again.

Please tell all your readers and all those who are working so hard to influence others, THANK YOU!

[this photograph of Matt and his daughter was taken last summer at Strawberry Farms]

Let’t make it happen! GO MITT!

PLEASE HELP — GOVERNOR ROMNEY NEEDS YOUR HELP TODAY

Flag Waving

THANK YOU VERY MUCH to all of you who have contributed to contribute to Governor Romney’s presidential campaign. He needs to build the war chest for next Tuesday.   We are still short about $5,000 in the committed bucket (see commitment to Gov. Romney below).

Governor Romney is running against three HUGE opponents in these primaries:

1The Mainstream Media. Clearly, in the Republican Primary in Florida and beyond, John McCain is the MSM darling. Many political experts outside Governor Romney’s camp have even stated as much. They are all pulling for McDarling.

2Washington, D.C. Establishment. People like Lindsay Graham (senator from South Carolina) and many others are directly threatened by Mitt Romney if he is able to follow through on his promises of turning Washington, D.C. inside-out to completely reform it.

3John McCain. In the last several days, the driver of the “Straight Talk Express” has been blatantly lying about Governor Romney’s statements. We now know he is able, and more than willing, to do or say whatever he thinks he needs to in order to gain supreme power in Washington, D.C.

4 Religious Bigotry.

Below is a reader’s comment left at this blog about seven days ago. I decided to post it, front and center, to make a point. Many, many of you have sacrificed greatly to assist Governor Romney in this cause to fundamentally alter the course of America for good. Many thousands of grassroots hours of work have been given by many of you in placing the get-out-the-vote calls. So many of you have been contacting neighbors, friends, and associates to influence. I have spoken to many of you who have done these things. THANK YOU!

I made a commitment over a week ago to raise a significant amount of money toward the February 5th primary states to get Governor Romney’s message out properly. I intend to keep that commitment to the campaign, but I will need a lot of help — FROM YOU. You can imagine that for Governor Romney to campaign against all three of the above opponents in Florida, he has had to spend a considerable amount.

In the last few days, I have contacted people who told me months ago they would one day contribute to Governor Romney’s campaign when it looked like he was really viable. Well guess what? He has always been viable, but now is their time to step up. I have called them on it and they will contribute. There are always early trail blazers — those have already blazed the trails for Governor Romney. We now need those who have been waiting and watching.

Please make a contribution today. Click below to do so (in the “Source Code” box, please type in ECA064):

OFFICIAL ROMNEY ONLINE CONTRIBUTION FORM — PLEASE DONATE NOW

*********************************************************

Using the above online form sends the needed funds directly to the campaign chest immediately. People always ask me how much they should donate. Frankly, that is a private matter — this I will say: No contribution is too small. If all you can afford today is $25, then [click Continue Reading below]

Main Stream Republicans (MSR) Dislike McCain

January 24th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in John McCain, MSM

Hugh Hewitt wrote this piece earlier today:

The Elephant In The Room

Look at all the GOP polls in Florida.

After 24 years in the Congress, thousands of hour of MSM exposure, a presidential campaign in 2000 and a keynote at the 2004 Convention, plus tens of millions of dollars in ads, John McCain’s highest support number is 25% and his lowest is 18%.

The GOP rank-and-file know John McCain, admire his heroism, and reject his politics and record.

The idea that he is a “front-runner” is absurd. He should be the front-runner. He should be sweeping all before him. Instead he is trying to cobble together an inside straight, which tells us that he is a phenomenally weak candidate.

The Arizona maverick is the candidate of the MSM, pure and simple. The MSM is powerful, but powerful enough to overcome three-quarters of the GOP electorate and force a second Bob Dole campaign on the party?

How about a new acronym? MSR–Main Stream Republicans.

McCain is incredibly disliked by this group. The MSR will continue to coalesce around Mitt and defeat McCain.
