Minimum Wage

August 18th, 2007 | Comments Off | Posted in Minimum Wage

On Thursday, Gov. Romney endorsed the idea of pegging minimum wage to inflation.

It’s an old idea Gov. Romney had when he was running for governor in Massachusetts that, for reasons I’ve never understood, never got passed. Pegging minimum wage to inflation just makes sense from a practical and political standpoint. Practical because, if we’re going to have a minimum wage (and we are…this is a fight conservatives lost in the 30s), it’s best to set it up to be as little a burden on business as possible. A small yearly increase does much less to hurt business than a large increase every 5-10 years.

From a political standpoint it has the benefit of getting the issue off the table forever. And yes, I’m quite sick of hearing about this, mostly irrelevant (since hardly anyone actually makes minimum wage), issue.

Heh, I just went back through our archives. Turns out I cut my teeth with my first real post on minimum wage way back when I first joined this site. Ah, the days when Gov. Romney was behind Sen. McCain, Sen. Allen, and Sen. Frist.
