Pence Needs 23 More Signatures

June 19th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Free Speech, Mike Pence, Mitt Romney

Congress is just 23 signatures away from a vote that could finally end the archaic Fairness Doctrine and create a permanent free-market system for talk radio.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) continues to urge congress members to sign the Broadcaster Freedom Act discharge petition. The petition will “prevent the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from repromulgating the fairness doctrine,” originally initiated in the 1930s under Franklin Roosevelt.

During its glory days, the Fairness Doctrine was never applied to ensure conservatives’ air time. In fact, conservative voices were shunned while liberal bias seemed to mysteriously remain under the radar of the FCC. The Fairness Doctrine’s attempt at “fairness” created the most imbalanced media atmosphere possible. Or, some journalists simply avoided any coverage of controversial issues in order to avoid the nuisance of finding contrasting viewpoints on every issue raised in a story.

This biased radio and television coverage thrived until former President Reagan removed the doctrine in the 80s. Conservative talk radio – which had been an oddity – quickly became a commercial success.

In Wake of Defeats, House GOP Moves to Right the Campaign Ship

Congressman Mike Pence hits the nail on the head in identifying if the problems the Party had in 2006 were a matter of “killing the message or killing the messenger.”

Bulletin to NRCC: Let the Democrats be Democrats. You folks in Washington are out of touch
with your base. If something doesn’t change in the next several months there will be more new faces in town and they won’t be Republicans.

Party strategists say the question remains whether the GOP’s electoral woes are the result of tactical mistakes or a larger identity problem in the national party. Republican leaders have been working to address the latter issue by rolling out a new legislative agenda.

“You don’t turn the Queen Mary around overnight,” Davis, a former NRCC chairman and critic, said of the GOP’s recent losing efforts. “We need more of a facelift than just shuffling at the NRCC.”

“I don’t blame the candidates,” agreed Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.). “I don’t blame the committee. The Republican Party as a whole has a credibility problem.”

Mike Pence Signs Discharge Petition for Important Border Enforcement Bill

Good news from Roy Beck and Numbers USA, a pro border law enforcement watch dog organization. Congressman Mike Pence has signed the discharge petition to bring the SAVE Act out of the committee where Nancy Pelosi and Co. have had it buried for months.

~~John Cronin~~

BACKGROUND ON DISCHARGE PETITION AND SAVE ACT (Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement Act)

WASHINGTON, March 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The following was
released today by the Office of House Republican Whip Roy Blunt:

Rep. Thelma Drake (Va.) filed a discharge petition on H.R. 4088, the Secure America Through Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act of 2007, this afternoon. This bipartisan legislation has 143 cosponsors, 48 Democrats and 93 Republicans, and has three steps that secure our nation’s border and strengthen enforcement of our current immigration laws.

Below is a quote from Roy Beck’s email to me regarding the strong support for the discharge petition from most of the Indiana delegation, including Mike Pence.

SOMETHING SPECIAL IN INDIANA

I want to especially praise our Indiana activists who now have persuaded all four of the state’s Republican Representatives to sign the Discharge Petition (Souder, Burton, Buyer and Pence) and also two of the 10 Democrats from the entire nation (Ellsworth and Donnelly).

It would be tough to gain a clean sweep for Indiana, but keep the pressure on Democrats Hill, Carson and Visclosky.

Dr. Bob Onder for U.S. Congress for Missouri

This is another in a series of posts that I hope to be able to contribute to this website. As our regular readers know, I have been supporting Jeff Beatty for the Senate from Massachusetts and Mike Pence from Indiana in his bid for re-election.

Now I would like to introduce another conservative Republican who was recommended to me by the Speaker of the Missouri House, Rod Jetton.

His name is Dr. Bob Onder and he is running for the U.S. Congress.

Rod Jetton headed MissouriansForMitt during the primary campaign and worked tirelessly for Gov. Romney. He has asked me to help support Dr. Onder, and after I became familiar with his stand on the core issues that are most important to us, I said I would be happy to help.

Please go to Dr. Onder’s website and if you agree with me that we could use a man like this in Congress to protect the family, while supporting a strong military that is backed by a strong economy, please consider standing with us financially if possible or by posting about Dr. Onder’s campaign. For any Missouri Mittheads that may read this, there are many ways that you can get involved at the grassroots level.

Economic Conservative
• Continue the Bush Tax Cuts
• Hold the line against Liberals in Washington who want to raise our taxes
• Reduce our dependence on foreign oil to bring down the cost of gas here at home
• Continue Kenny Hulshof’s crusade to kill the Death Tax to protect family farms and businesses in the 9th District

As a small businessman who employs 12 people, Dr. Onder knows what it takes to set and keep a budget. He does it at his medical practice and at the kitchen table with his wife, Allison, as they look out for their children’s future.

Social Conservative
• Supports a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman
• Supports a Constitutional Amendment to make English the official language of the United States, as he did in the Missouri state legislature
• Supports the death penalty
• Has been a Life Member of the National Rifle Association since he was 17
• Believes that life begins at conception and will fight for the rights of the unborn, as he did in the Missouri state legislature

As a father of six and a committed husband of 13 years, Dr. Onder is a family man first and foremost. He will stand up to Liberals who want to destroy marriage and cheapen the sanctity of human life.

Dr. Onder will fight for our conservative values in Washington.

Congressman Mike Pence’s Speech In Recognition Of Israel’s 60th Anniversary

April 27th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Israel, Mike Pence, Mitt Romney

Rep. Mike Pence continues to impress me with his conservatism and his thoughtful approach to the challenges that face us. I wanted to make his speech available to our readers because I think it is vitally important to continue to support one of the few friends we have in the Middle East.

IMHO, we owe a debt of gratitude to the courageous State Of Israel for their willingness to take military action against the attempts by both Iraq under Saddam Hussein and more recently, Syria, to go nuclear. They have used air strikes twice to take out nuclear facilities that would have been used against them and would have also placed our personnel in Israel in harm’s way.

As many of you know, the modern State of Israel was reborn on May 14, 1948 after 2,500 years of the Diaspora. I think this is one of the most fascinating stories I have ever seen. If you haven’t done any research on this subject, I highly recommend that you do and you will definitely enjoy the process.

“Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.”

Psalm 122 vs. 6

http://mikepence.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=89322

Washington, Apr 22 -
Congressman Mike Pence, the Ranking Member of the Middle East and South Asia Subcommittee of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, gave the following speech from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives today, in recognition of Israel’s 60th anniversary:

“Mr. Speaker, sixty years ago next month, the state of Israel, under the leadership of a small band of courageous Zionists, declared independence in its ancient homeland.
“It was promptly recognized by the United States, as the distinguished Majority Leader just eloquently described. And, it was promptly attacked by its Arab neighbors.

“The more things change, the more they seem to stay the same.

“Israel prevailed against long odds then and we celebrate sixty years of that on the floor today, and will celebrate around the United States and around the world next month. It was against extraordinarily long odds it prevailed again in 1967, 1973, and on countless other times since.
“It is important that we note that through these trials and travails, Israel remains the only fully functioning democracy in the Middle East.

“Founded by Holocaust survivors and resolved to overcome the horrors of mid-Twentieth Century Europe’s atrocities, today Israel boasts a vibrant economy with a well-educated populace. Israel’s GDP exceeded most major economies in 2007 and has reached Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development candidate status.

“Israel, sixty years on from that historic day next month, is an extraordinary success. But Israel is still in a neighborhood of sworn enemies. In its sixtieth year of history, all of two Arab countries have seen fit to recognize Israel. And, today’s leader of Iran threatens with regularity to ‘wipe Israel off the map.’

“That’s why I rise today to say two things.

“Number one, I join my colleagues in both parties who rise to congratulate this historic accomplishment of sixty years hence.
“But I also say that as we commend Israel, we in this body in both parties should look for opportunities to recommit ourselves to her defense.
“We cannot stand idly by while a gathering menace grows in the region. We cannot stand quiet while some Americans travel overseas and associate themselves with the blood-soaked enemies of Israel.

“So today we celebrate and we celebrate in a spirit of bipartisanship.

“But, I hope as this historic 60th anniversary approaches, we in this body in both parties will look for those opportunities upon which we can come together to rededicate ourselves to the preservation and the protection of Israel as a Jewish state and to Jerusalem as her eternal capital.”

Congressman Mike Pence of Indiana

In keeping with my goal of doing what I can to help elect conservatives to Congress, I’d like to ask our readers, especially those who live in Indiana, to check out Mike Pence’s positions on the issues that are important to us.

I have spent some time on Congressman Pence’s website and he is another member of the legislature who is rock solid on the hot button issues that turn out the base. I am still very much getting up to speed on Mike Pence and don’t claim to know much right now, but he seems to be pitch perfect on the immigration issue.

Below are a couple of quotes from his website.

~~John Cronin~~

Immigration

Securing the Borders and Reforming Immigration Without Amnesty

“Our plan puts border security first and cracks down on those who knowingly hire illegal workers, but it also recognizes the need for a temporary worker program that operates without amnesty and harnesses the power of the private sector to avoid creating a huge new government bureaucracy.”
-Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and Rep. Mike Pence
July 25, 2006

Securing the Borders First:

• The number one priority of any serious attempt at immigration reform must be a comprehensive and successful effort to secure the borders of the United States. Such an initiative must precede—not follow—the implementation of a temporary worker program. The border security initiative must include comprehensive surveillance that utilizes personnel and technology; infrastructure improvements including fences; checkpoints; detention facilities; judicial support; and deployment of additional Border Protection and Drug Enforcement personnel.

• This plan adopts the strongest provisions of the House and Senate-passed bills and addresses unlawful entry of terrorists and instruments of terror, undocumented immigrants, narcotics and human trafficking.
