Huck and Obama Sitting In A Tree…

You know the end of the saying…

Apparently Mr. Huckabee is scared of the good ole USA, and feels safer in suicide bombing on a regular basis Israel. Now don’t get me wrong I am a friend of Israel, but Mr. Huck has some serious mental problems if he believes he’s safer there than back here.

He’s like Obama, who doesn’t seem to have much pride in his own country.

Pro-Huckabee Activists to Dissuade McCain on Romney Ticket

August 13th, 2008 | 30 Comments | Posted in Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Veepstakes, Vice President

There are a boatload of these stories circulating through the MSM and the blogosphere the last couple of days and they sound remarkably alike. Am I getting cynical, or do you think someone has released talking points to the usual suspects?

Supporters of former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee will meet with presumptive Republican nominee John McCain on Wednesday to persuade him not to name former campaign rival Mitt Romney as his running mate.

McCain is tentatively scheduled to meet with about 10 social conservative activists and religious leaders from Michigan, according to The Detroit News. Another group of about 40 Huckabee supporters will meet separately with a McCain campaign liaison, said Debra Matney, a Huckabee supporter who is helping to organize the meeting.

Leah Yoon, a McCain campaign spokeswoman, confirmed that the Republican candidate plans to meet with “grass-roots and faith-based leaders” during his visit to Michigan on Wednesday.
McCain’s vice presidential pick is expected to be a major point of discussion at both meetings.

Although McCain has remained tight-lipped on his vice presidential selection process, insiders say Romney is among the short list for the position.

But Matney said the Michigan activists and religious leaders want Huckabee to be on the ticket, but if that is not possible, then they want Romney not to be on it.

Romney, a Michigan native, was popular among conservatives earlier in the primaries. But then Huckabee became the favorite for conservative voters given his consistent record of conservative stances, [ Editor’s Note: ??? ] his ability to weave biblical references into speeches and his deadpan sense of humor.

Ohio Activists Reject Romney….Caution: Moonbat Alert!

If this is a legitimate article, the “activist” quoted is displaying logic that has more holes in it than a piece of Swiss cheese. Let’s dissect the quotes.

Ohio activists reject Romney
He would be poor VP choice, they say

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 3:20 AM

By Jonathan Riskind
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

WASHINGTON – Some Ohio social conservatives say they know whom they don’t want John McCain to pick as his running mate: former Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney.

In a move that may say as much about their continuing uneasiness regarding McCain as it does about their mistrust of Romney, an alliance of Buckeye State social conservatives is trying to form a group: Social Conservatives Against Romney.

“Social Conservatives against Romney.” I suppose it would be too much to ask what these folks are for, like a strong pro life position that has been held for several years after what I believe was a sincere change of heart, a pro business position that favors a corporate tax cut that will enhance America’s competitive position, a pro military policy that will protect America from the totalitarians that would love to destroy us and our ideas of democracy and freedom.

Although McCain is keeping his potential vice-presidential choices a tightly held secret, Romney is said to be on the short list.

Romney is said to be on the short list. I wonder why that is. Could it be because of his unrivaled competency in so many areas, his evident intelligence and grasp of complex issues. Where is Huckabee on that list? Perhaps he is not on the list because he has been correctly categorized as a smooth talking lightweight?

“Christians are praying earnestly for the right person,” said Diane Stover, a Parma resident who was a delegate for GOP candidate Mike Huckabee, a favorite of many social conservatives, in the Ohio primary. “McCain wouldn’t have been our person. But we definitely feel like it would be a huge help to John McCain to pick someone we can be confident will represent the value-voter position. I don’t think it helps him (McCain) at all in Ohio if he picks Romney.”

Oh right. You folks have obviously distinguished your selves as great candidate-pickers. Your first choice was asked during the primaries if he was a “foreign policy expert” and he infamously replied: “No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.”

A McCain spokesman said the campaign won’t comment on any aspect of the process of selecting a running mate.

Jane Maines of Hamilton, also a former Huckabee delegate, said the anti-Romney Ohioans hope their group will spread to other states.

They apparently want to extend the winning streak they enjoyed during the primary into the general election.

Stover and Maines are among about a dozen activists who met near Cincinnati last week, with Stover participating via phone from the Cleveland area, to discuss how to launch the group.
“We’re hoping this will become hugely widespread,” Maines said.

Big things can start from small beginnings, but in this group’s case, I think it will probably be more of a case of starting small and then shrinking.

She said she doesn’t consider the anti-Romney effort to be anti-McCain, despite saying McCain is not a “real conservative.” She said she and other conservatives will support McCain in November, noting that he has had a consistent anti-abortion voting record as a senator from Arizona.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, is too inconsistent on issues such as abortion and gay rights “for someone who calls himself a conservative,” Maines said.

The group overlooks McCain flips on taxes, domestic drilling and his huge flip on illegal immigration….All this makes me think that this tiny group in more about religious intolerance then it is about Gov. Romney’s political positions. As a Reagan Republican and as a conservative Catholic, I will repeat what I started saying almost two years ago. Mitt Romney more closely represents me and the values that I share with my Catholic and Protestant friends and associates than any of the candidates in either party this election cycle. If Mitt Romney does not get the VP nod, I will be ready to support him again in 2012.

Huckabee Schmuckabee

Well, Mr. Huckabee (that Schmuck he is), has taken his “Holier Than Thou” attitude and chastised people against “Demonizing” Barack Obama, now I don’t believe that anyone should go after Obama for his race, but I find it very tart of him to act like he’s all “high road” when he was the biggest damn bigot during the primary season going after Governor Romney with his sick attacks against his faith. Who in the heck does Mr. Huckabee think he is? Religious Authority of the United States of America? I don’t give a crap about what this low life of a politician has to say. He doesn’t have a bit of credibility period.

Romney Wins With or Without VP Spot

No new information in this BEEHIVE STANDARD article, but it does reinforce what we have been saying for months on this site.

~~John Cronin~~

http://beehivestandardweekly.com/articles/198/1/
Romney-Wins-With-or-Without-VP-Spot

By leaving the GOP nomination in a timely fashion, Mitt Romney is poised to win with or without a spot on the McCain ticket. Though Romney is certainly hoping to join the ticket as John McCain’s presidential running mate, if he is not chosen, he is clearly the leading candidate going into the next election cycle, whether that is in four or eight years.

CHOOSING ROMNEY

John McCain won the presidential nomination fair and square. The problem for McCain is that he didn’t win over conservatives, he split them between Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney. In a sense, McCain’s win happened only because he split the financial and evangelical base of the party. McCain clearly won the national defense component of the party, but that will not win him the White House — especially during a time of an unpopular war.

Times have changed since the last primary for John McCain. America has slipped into financial chaos. If McCain were to run today against Mitt Romney, a well known financial fix-it man, Romney would win two out of three contests. Earlier the Iraq War was still front and center, whereas today the economy is the most important issue to voters. McCain has many choices in a vice presidential selection, but none so credible in speaking on financial matters than Mitt Romney.

Gamblers Bet on Hill and Mitt for Veep

Here’s the latest scuttlebutt on Mitt Romney’s standing in the Veep Sweepstakes. It is fascinating to me that the voter dynamics are the same as they were during the primary season. Mitt is seen as the #2 Republican in the nation. Eighteen months ago, the nation didn’t recognize the name Mitt Romney. Today Intrade puts him in first place to get the VP nod.

Huckabee is ranked #1 among entertainment agent’s as the most likely to get a new game show gig.

June 3, 2008 –
Hillary Rodham Clinton and Mitt Romney are the favorites to be their parties’ vice-presidential nominees, according to a popular online betting site.

Intrade, which correctly picked the winner of every state in the 2004 general election, evaluates the veepstakes chances of 30 prominent political figures - 16 Democrats and 14 Republicans.

Among Democrats, Clinton holds a slight lead over Virginia Sen. James Webb, with a 21 percent chance of her being named to the No. 2 spot, compared with Webb’s 19.7 percent.
In a distant third place is New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, at 6.2 percent.

On the GOP side, there are three leaders, Romney at 19.2 percent, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty at 15.6 percent and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee at 14.1 percent, according to Intrade.

Intrade is one of several online political “prediction markets”
in which participants speculate on outcomes of campaigns, election turnout, the chances of a brokered Democratic convention and even whether Eliot Spitzer will get indicted.

Intrade’s participants hedged their bets saying there’s an excellent chance the veep picks will be “none of the above.”

They say there’s a 40.8 percent possibility none of the 14 prominent Republicans drawing attention will get the nod. For Democrats, the figure is 28.5 percent.

Romney To The Rescue?

Hat Tip #2 to Doug & Darlene

There is an old expression that says: “Any publicity is good publicity”, but I beg to disagree. Pastor Huckabee’s disastrous attempt at ad lib humor reinforces the need for MH to stay completely scripted and leave the comedy to Mitt Romney, who is actually good at it.

That said, while Huckabee is hard at work destroying what little is left of his credibility and diligently attempting to embarrass the GOP, Mitt Romney and George Bush are raising boatloads of cash to help pull the Party’s bacon out of the fire and prevent an Obama administration.

Kudos to both Mitt Romney and President Bush for doing the spade work and filling the party’s coffers, while Huckabee runs around the country, laying eggs and wasting our time.

Monday, May 19, 2008 Romney to the Rescue? Posted by: Matt Lewis

John McCain’s campaign can’t compete with Barack Obama’s money, so he’s turning to the RNC. They, in turn, are looking to George W. Bush and Mitt Romney.

From today’s NYT:

… Republican officials said they were enlisting President Bush, a formidable fund-raiser who has raised more than $36 million this year for Republican candidates and committees, for three events on Mr. McCain’s behalf. They will appear together at a fund-raiser in Phoenix on May 27, and the next day the president will take part in a luncheon with Mitt Romney in Salt Lake City and then an exclusive dinner at Mr. Romney’s vacation home in Park City, Utah.

It is of interest that while Mike Huckabee continues to garner media exposure, Mitt Romney is becoming the “go-to-guy” when it comes to raising Republican money …

Romney Decries California Following Massachusetts On Gay Marriage

Contrast the remarks delivered by Mitt Romney at the NRA Convention, defending the sanctity of marriage, with the now infamous “joke” delivered by Pastor Huckabee.

BTW, does anyone know if Huckabee’s supporters are trying to spin this or are they hiding under their desks? Maybe we can send them some sandwiches, they must be getting hungry by now.

Mike Huckabee: 2nd Rate Pastor, 3rd Rate Comedian

I just checked out the reaction to Huckabee’s unbelievably irresponsible crack about Obama
delivered at the NRA meeting. THE LAST THING any politician needs to be talking about is this kind of stuff. It’s not as if the unstable people in our country (and judging from the headlines, we don’t seem to be experiencing any shortage) need any encouragement.

It’s hard to put into words the revulsion that I feel toward Huckabee at this moment. To put that thought into people’s heads to try to get a cheap laugh and pander to a constituent group at the same time is regrettable.

The NYT Caucus site had almost 400 comments when I went on the site late this morning. Absolutely played right into the hands of the lefties that comment on that site. Mike Huckabee is in over his head and he needs to get out of national politics before he brings anymore embarrassment to the Republican Party.

I have spent some time around gun owners, sport shooters and hunters. My experience with them is that they are very responsible people. The NRA, as you know, stresses gun safety, training and good citizenship. For that hack to deliver this kind of appalling remark before a NRA audience, adds insult to injury.

Huckabee owes an apology to: 1. Barack Obama 2. Michele Obama 3. The Obama children 4. The American people 5. The National Rifle Association 6. Real comedians

[ Editor's Note ] I just came across this comment at TOWNHALL.COM.

WHAT Was He Thinking? Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 5:05 PM Speaking on behalf of John McCain, Mike Huckabee actually made a joking off-hand comment about someone aiming a gun at Barack Obama.

Yes, it was a joke. Yes, it seemed unscripted. But one never, ever, ever jokes about the possibility of a rival (or anyone, for that matter) being assassinated. Especially when many genuinely fear for that candidate’s safety because of his race.

Such a remark isn’t just wrong and graceless. It’s downright dumb. Huckabee owes Barack, his supporters — and, for that matter — John McCain an apology.

Geez. With friends like Huckabee, neither Republicans nor gun owners need adversaries.

McCain’s Christain Problem

It’s almost as if Robert Novak is an avid reader of this website. My jaw almost hit the floor this morning as I read his column in the Washington Post.

He has touched on the very points that we have collectively made here. The main point being that McCain was the major beneficiary of Huckabee’s divide and conquer strategy. At one point early in the primary season, Mitt Romney appeared ready to run the table. He was in first or second place in 6 out of 7 of the first primaries. Even as a strong supporter of Mitt Romney, I had to shake my head in wonder. Coming from a virtual unknown to such a commanding lead within the space of a year was an awesome accomplishment.

But then something very strange started to happen. Social conservatives who are very “family values” oriented, who are solidly pro life and who favor a strong military and a smaller, simpler government, abandoned the candidate who supported all those positions in favor of a glib, but shallow candidate with zero foreign affairs credibility and zero economic credibility.

If what Robert Novak writes in his column is true, then these poor souls have not learned a single, solitary lesson from their disastrous experiment in Presidential politics. They are still true believers in the man from Hope.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am getting sick of hearing the empty platitudes about “Hope” and “Change.” I will wait for 2012 when we can start talking again about “Experience” and “Competency.”

McCain and Huckabee were friendly rivals in this year’s Republican competition, sharing contempt for Mitt Romney. Indeed, McCain would not be where he is today had Huckabee not mobilized born-again voters to upset Romney in the Iowa caucuses. All of Romney’s efforts to overtake McCain in conservative Southern state primaries were stifled by Huckabee’s success in those contests. Huckabee quickly endorsed McCain once he clinched the nomination. They bonded publicly in Little Rock on April 24 during McCain’s tour.

Romney Raises Austin Money For Cornyn

Latest Romney event was this past Friday as MR swooped into Austin, Tx. to raise money for the re-election campaign of fellow conservative, U.S. Senator John Cornyn.

Conspicuous by his absence was ertswhile Pastor and future game show host, Mike Huckabee.

By W. Gardner Selby

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, juiced his already-bulging campaign kitty Friday with a fund-raiser in Austin featuring Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who might prove to be Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential choice.

Word is that Romney has a reunion of Texas donors in Houston on Friday night, to be followed by an event raising money for McCain’s campaign on Saturday.

U.S. Reps. John Carter, R-Round Rock, and Lamar Smith, R-San Antonio, were among the 45 people at the event at Austin’s Headliners Club, helping the campaign raise about $50,000.

I wondered if former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, the Republican who outlasted Romney in the presidential race, is next up for a private shindig with Cornyn. He’s not.

Loved the comment about Huckabee not invited. Romney clearly is preferred for raising campaign cash. He raised more than any Republican candidate. He has know-how and Cornyn recognizes who is the face of the party future. Its Romney. He’s a good man, working hard for others.

Networks and Newspapers Lose the News

I am currently reading a very interesting and informative book written by the LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS, published by THE LYONS PRESS, “CHOOSING THE PRESIDENT 2004″.

They have a study they refer to in the book that was done by the PEW RESEARCH CENTER FOR THE PEOPLE AND THE PRESS; “2002 MEDIA CONSUMPTION SURVEY.”

Here’s a look at what they found.

“As recently as 1990, the major television networks—ABC,CBS and NBC—had a dominant role in delivering news to the American people. In 1992, the nightly network news shows with Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings regularly reached 60 percent of the adult population. By 2002, that number had declined to 32 percent—almost cut in half.

Newspapers, the most traditional of the major media, faced the same trend. While 58% of people polled in 1994 said that they had read a newspaper in the last day, by 2002 that figure was down to 41%. In addition, older Americans are much more likely to be newspaper readers than people in their twenties—a trend that has the newspapers very worried.

Local TV news and radio also reach lots of people, and both of these news media have also lost viewers or listeners in the past ten years. Cable TV news, the most influential of the new media, has held steady in recent years. In 2002, it was regularly watched by 33% of Americans.

When you take into account all their news programing, including the morning shows and news magazines, the major networks still receive some attention from a majority of Americans. As a result, their coverage of the issues and the candidates can have considerable influence on the course of a presidential campaign. But campaign planners are very much aware that the way America gets it’s news is changing fast, and new strategies are needed.”

For most of our readers, the above is probably old news. I quote it to point out the need for utilizing a very basic, but very effective grassroots organizing technique, neighborhood canvassing. My experience with door-to-door canvassing earlier this year was very positive. It reinforced my belief that one way to help overcome the MSM’s effect on the campaigns of conservatives is to get in front of voters and deliver a message to them that they haven’t heard before. My experience both in Des Moines and in St. Louis was that most people still rely on the newspapers and broadcast TV for their impressions of the candidates, and everyone on this site knows from bitter experience what the Huckabee network of churches and pastors and the MSM propaganda machine did to Gov. Romney’s run for the nomination.

If you have not tried it before, I’d like to encourage you to team up with a friend and to start to organize your own neighborhoods for a conservative Republican Congressional candidate or incumbent. Make sure you are up to speed on your candidate’s positions and very importantly, keep good records of your contacts. Get them on an emailing list where possible and hand out literature for those voters who don’t have internet access. Ask for permission to place a sign in their yards and be sure to recontact everyone you talked to the weekend before the election in order to “get out the vote.”

It’s hard work and time consuming. It’s also very effective. Here’s a look at how Gov. Romney did in the areas that had the highest concentrations of grassroots volunteers. To a great degree, the results were influenced by these area’s favorable demographics, having a higher percentage of college educated and upscale voters (patterns we saw very plainly in Des Moines as well), but, according to the national campaign office in Boston, the results were also influenced by the volunteer organization’s co-ordinated efforts.

N.Y. Banker Helping McCain Fill His Coffers

Robert Evans has some interesting gossip that he is dishing tonight.

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.suntimes.com/news/novak/917712,CST-EDT-novak27.article

April 27, 2008

ROBERT NOVAK novakevans@aol.com

Big-time Republican contributors are complaining that prospective presidential nominee John McCain is poorly organized for the campaign and off to a bad start in raising money.
McCain begins well behind Democrat Barack Obama in the 2008 money derby, and longtime Republican givers say there is no coherent plan for catching up and getting ahead.

The bright spot for McCain in the opinion of the GOP money men is the presence in his campaign of New York investment banker Lew Eisenberg, an experienced Republican fund-raiser. Eisenberg, a pro-choice social liberal who has often contributed to Democrats, was attacked by conservatives when he came on board with McCain in 2007. When McCain clinched the nomination, Eisenberg was sent to the Republican National Committee as victory finance chairman.

In another article further down on the same page some Mitt Romney news.

McCain for guns

Sen. John McCain, continuing to mend his right-wing fences, will do something next month that George W. Bush never has done during 7½ years as president: attend a National Rifle Association event.

McCain plans to be in Louisville, Ky., on May 16 for the NRA’s ”Celebration of American Values.” Also on hand will be two of McCain’s defeated rivals for the Republican presidential nomination, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee.

The NRA gave McCain a mediocre C-plus rating in 2004, but since then his pro-gun voting record as a senator has been 100 percent. While some activists in the gun-ownership movement are still suspicious of McCain, his voting is vastly better than that of his two Democratic opponents, Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton. Each is graded F by the NRA.
