Politico: Huck not going to be Veep

March 5th, 2008 | 54 Comments | Posted in 2008, Mike Huckabee, Mike Huckabee, Vice President

Don’t know if this is true or just the usual rumor mill/political posturing stuff…but if it were true, I know I would be relieved.

While some Huckabee supporters were hoping that he might get a vice presidential nod this year, Huckabee says they should forget it. “We have been given every signal that is not going to be considered,” Huckabee said.

Building The Reagan Coalition, Phase II

I don’t ever recall seeing the comments section of this blog so active. Thanks to all for your interest in ALL THINGS ROMNEY and for your energy.

I wanted to touch on some of the points and comments that I see as being, in my mind, most prominent in the discussions.

One of the points that I see actively talked about is the new “write-in” strategy. I am not willing to concede anything to McCain or to Huckabee, but if it becomes necessary to adopt this strategy, several good things will happen.

1. None of us will get into the regrettable habit of voting for Democrats. You are familiar with the old saying: “Friends don’t let friends vote for Democrats.”

2. We will punish the Republican hierarchy for pushing a fairly liberal Democrat, er, I mean Republican as the party’s nominee. I don’t want to punish the party’s rank and file, just RINO”S like Crist, Schwarzzenneger and Mel Martinez. Psychologists tell us that rewarding bad behavior encourages more bad behavior. How embarrassing would it be for the RINO leadership to have pushed McCain’s candidacy so brazenly, only to have real Republicans write-in Romney’s name en masse?

3. Unlike voting for, you’ll pardon the expression, a Democrat, (any Democrat) a write-in will show up distinctly in the voting tallies, rather than being buried, to a certain extent, in the general election vote totals. I know, exit polling would measure it pretty well, but a write-in strategy would paint a clearer picture.

4. It will send a message to the party establishment that they can’t win without us, no matter how they may hold us in distain.

5. It will settle the religious bias controversy for everyone except the “invincibly ignorant” that if they insist on using this as a strategy, we will use our 35% voting bloc to over ride their 25% voting bloc.

6. It is light years more effective than “sitting the election out.” I am firmly convinced that the Democrats would like nothing better than for us pesky Reagan coalition voters to stay home and forfeit the game. Politically speaking, the general election is the SUPER BOWL. Nobody forfeits that contest. It’s what you work for all season long.

We have also talked a lot about the need to rebuild the Republican party. The current leadership needs to go. I love that old saying: “Politicians are a lot like a baby’s diaper. They need to be changed often and for the same reason.” One of our commenters talked about getting involved in a local election, I believe in a judge’s election. That’s what I’m talking about! She will get to be known within her local party’s membership and over time, access equals influence. Rather than hope the Old Guard will support Mitt in 2012 if it comes to that, why don’t we replace some of them now with Romney supporters? That way we will control the party apparatus.

Reagan built his coalition by working the grassroots for four years. Using the platform of his radio broadcast, traveling all over the country giving speeches that reinforced conservative principles, meeting and convincing voters from all walks of life that conservatism is in the best interests of the country. That is something Mitt Romney has not had a chance to do. You can build up a boatload of political IOU’s that way.

We may yet end up in a brokered convention, but that’s not for sure. Something completely unforeseen could cause us to sweep the remaining states. Never underestimate a hot head like McCain. Who knows what he might say if he explodes. The stories coming out of the U.S. Senate about his profanity-laced tirades suggest that he could change the dynamics of this race at any moment.

And finally, keep in mind that we now have identified the strongest conservative in American politics, Gov. Mitt Romney. His name recognition is now off the charts, his grassroots organization is now battle hardened and experienced. His national campaign staff is the envy of the rest of the campaigns. His fund raising strategy can now develop over a four year period and he will have the necessary time to develop a national network of political support. If, and I do mean if, it turns out that 2008 is not our time, we are in great position to take over the party, barn storm the country and finalize the work of “BUILDING THE REAGAN COALTION, PHASE II.”

Hill v. Mitt Will Be It

Interesting article focusing on the voters being able to cut through the media fog.

The Republicans’ Florida debate demonstrated that the strong winner, Mitt Romney, has developed Mittmentum and is on course to election in November, despite the Clintons and some religious bigotry.

The United States of America’s next president won’t be its first president of Italian ancestry (as Rudy Giuliani hopes), because the Republicans won’t nominate a person who does not share the Republicans’ traditional pro-life, pro-personal morality values; or the first former prisoner-of-war (as John McCain still yearns), because now he’s too old for the grueling job and previously he was too inclined to break with most Republicans and join with Democrats (McCain-Feingold, Kennedy-McCain, Gang of Fourteen); or the first Baptist minister (as Mike Huckabee prays), because he’s not up to the job, he’s not the best choice and one president born in Hope, Arkansas was one too many.

But there WILL be big change.

The next president will be the first female president, or the first half-black president (Barack’s mother was white and ignoring that is…not right), or the first Mormon president.

Much of the media really would prefer Obama versus McCain, and have been broadcasting, reporting and editorializing accordingly, but the politically adept Clintons will do whatever it takes to win the Democrat nomination.

Nevertheless, in the end, enough Republicans will refuse to succumb to religious bigotry and reject a monagamous Mormon who shares their basic values for a man who divorced his first wife and married a rich, much younger divorcee whose family could support his political ambitions.

Mitt Bits

Here are some latest news bits about Mitt.

Top Thompson Fla. fundraiser joins Romney

Mitchell said she decided to go with Romney after she was contacted by the other GOP campaigns. She said she will likely start raising money for the former governor after she meets with him Sunday.
Mitchell said she thinks “a lot of the people I brought to the table for Fred will go with Romney.”

Scoring Mitchell and her considerable Sunshine State connections could prove to be invaluable for Romney in Florida’s Jan. 29 primary, as poll after poll continues to show a tight race.

Duncan Hunter endorses …. Mike Huckabee?!  Hmmm…

Hunter backs Huckabee

Hunter’s endorsement could help Huckabee with his credentials on illegal immigration and border security. The congressman’s presidential campaign never caught fire and ended Saturday, following the Nevada Caucus.

Louisiana results - Mitt gets another bronze - well, probably…

Louisiana Caucus: McCain wins, Paul second, Romney third

State party officials cautioned that the results were preliminary. In order for a voter to be eligible to participate in the Caucus they must have been registered with the state Republican Party by November 30 2007. Party official are still verifying provisional ballots for newly registered voters which may boost Paul’s numbers a little since most of the newly registered voters supported his candidacy.
The delegates elected at the Caucus will attend a state convention on February 16th where they will elect national delegates. As a result it is unclear at this time how many delegates each candidate will receive.

Finally, on a McCant, McCranky, McCain note - Ann Coulter says it like only Ann can.  Hat tip to reader Louise for this one!

‘Straight Talk’ Express Takes Scenic Route to Truth

John McCain is Bob Dole minus the charm, conservatism and youth. Like McCain, pollsters assured us that Dole was the most “electable” Republican. Unlike McCain, Dole didn’t lie all the time while claiming to engage in Straight Talk.

Of course, I might lie constantly too, if I were seeking the Republican presidential nomination after enthusiastically promoting amnesty for illegal aliens, Social Security credit for illegal aliens, criminal trials for terrorists, stem-cell research on human embryos, crackpot global warming legislation and free speech-crushing campaign-finance laws.

I might lie too, if I had opposed the Bush tax cuts, a marriage amendment to the Constitution, waterboarding terrorists and drilling in Alaska.

It’s good, keep reading …

Huckabee: The Constitution is a “Living, breathing document”

Is anybody in the MSM going to call Huckabee on this stuff? (H/T: Hotair)

You can click through the link to get the whole story, but the gist of it is that Huckabee is using the classic liberal “living, breathing document” arguement to justify his statement the other day about how we need to change the Constitution to fit with “God’s standards.”

Okay, all of this stuff is ridiculous…but the icing on the cake is that Huck’s own website states “I firmly believe that the Constitution must be interpreted according to its original meaning, and flatly reject the notion of a “living Constitution.”

Who’s the real flip-flopper?

Romney Delegate Count Surges To 42

Congratulations to Governor Romney and his campaign team on a great win in Michigan tonight! As they say down South, he gave the competition a “thumpin’.”

It will be fascinating to analyze the exit polls to see just what the dynamics of the voting indicates. One thing that jumped out of the stats I saw was that among Catholics who go to church weekly, 41% voted for Gov. Romney. So much for Pastor Mike’s attempt to divide and conquer.

Here is the updated delegate count. MSM pundits, pay very close attention to these numbers. Try to keep them in mind as you sit down at your desk and place your fingers on your computer’s keyboard.

These numbers should be the reason why you should exercise a healthy discipline with yourself if you are tempted to write another column or blog calling on Gov. Romney to withdraw from the race.

The reason that Gov. Romney has not taken your advise is because HE IS WINNING!!

Romney…………42

Huckabee……….21

McCain………….19

Thompson……….6

Paul………………2

Giuliani…………..1

Hunter……………1

“For of those to whom much is given, much is required. And when at some future date the high court of history sits in judgment on each of us, recording whether in our brief span of service we fulfilled our responsibilities to the state, our success or failure, in whatever office we hold, we will be measured by the answer to four questions: First, were we truly men of courage…..Second, were we truly men of judgment…..Third, were we truly men of integrity…..Finally, were we truly men of dedication?

We observe today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedom, symbolizing an end as well as a beginning, signifying renewal as well as change.”

John Mark Reynolds” “Give ‘Em Scorpions” Politics: Avoiding Rehoboam’s Folly

John Mark Reynolds is awesome.

He recently wrote an article called “Give ‘Em Scorpions” Politics: Avoiding Rehoboam’s Folly. You need to read the whole thing. It talks about Solomon’s son Rehoboam who is largely to blame for the division between the tribe of Judah, and the rest of Israel.

Rehoboam broke the coalition between Israel and Judah, much the way the Huckabee’s campaign manager wants to break the house that Reagan built. It wasn’t enough for him to give us Bill Clinton, by running Ross Perot, but I digress.

Click here to read the whole thing.

If the old Reagan coalition is dissolved, then it will not be those who do the deed who suffer first, but millions more unborn children who might have been saved.

As I vote, and I will vote, let me vote for a person who can keep a coalition together and not break it up on its fault lines.

As I vote, pray God, let me be patient and accept slow change that the people can accept and not demand everything that will cost me everything.

As I vote, let me listen to older and wiser heads without becoming cynical and dropping out.

Let me avoid Rehoboam’s folly in the ballot box this year.

If you have no idea what he is talking about, read this article!

Giuliani’s Lead Shrinks in Florida, Poll Shows

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/01/14/giulianis-lead-shrinks-in-florida-poll-shows/

By: Michael Cooper

THE CAUCUS.BLOGS.NYTIMES.COM

NAPLES, Fla. — The campaign’s signs say “Florida is Rudy Country.’’ But despite Rudolph W. Giuliani’s heavy advertising effort here, and the fact that he has the state almost to himself while his rivals duke it out in colder climes, a poll released Monday shows that his lead in Florida has slipped, and the state is now very much up for grabs.
The poll, by Quinnipiac University, showed Senator John McCain, Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee all within the margin of sampling error. And it found that even though Mr. Giuliani now has the airwaves here to himself, Mr. McCain has gained nine percentage points since the last Qunnipiac survey was taken, between Dec. 12 and Dec. 18, while Mr. Giuliani lost eight percentage points.

The poll, which has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points, showed Mr. McCain with the support of 22 percent of likely primary voters, Mr. Giuliani at 20 percent, and Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Romney with 19. The survey polled 419 likely Republican primary voters from Jan. 9 through Jan. 13.”

Is it just me, or is the MSM showing world class chutzpah in calling for Mitt Romney to withdraw from the race when a mega delegate state like Florida is this tight in the polls?

Speaking of “tight”, that word reminds me of a classic “Dan Ratherism” from a few years ago that I wanted to get out of storage and dust off to recycle it here. Dan might say that the polls in Florida are: “Screwed down tighter than rusted lug nuts on a ’56 Ford pickup truck.”

Mitt’s Mich. Campaign Warns of Trickery

This just in, more dirty tricks from Romney opponents desperate to stop the leader in delegate count and the candidate at the top of the national polls.

POLITICO.COM

By: Jonathan Martin

From Romney’s Michigan state Director Jason McBride in an e-mail to state supporters:

Dear Michigan Voter,

The focus of this election has now turned to Michigan. In the coming days, each Republican campaign will be engaged in an intense effort to make contact with each potential voter. Yet, while some will engage in an effort to turn out their vote, third party groups will be engaged in a campaign to discourage the supporters of their opponents. Based upon reports from Iowa and New Hampshire, you should expect:

Anonymous E-Mails Or Fake E-Mails: In both Iowa and New Hampshire, voters received emails that appeared to be coming from Romney for President but were actually meant to suppress support for Gov. Romney. In both states, voters received email messages from “Team Romney” touting the endorsement of the Log Cabin Republicans. The truth is that the Log Cabin Republicans have launched attack ads against Gov. Romney. They do not support the governor and oppose his strong defense of traditional marriage in America.

Nuisance Calls: In New Hampshire, Romney supporters received calls from California numbers late at night. The callers claim to be Romney staffers. These “staffers” will call back time and again late at night. These calls are intended to reflect poorly upon Gov. Romney and his campaign. We are committed to nothing but professionalism.

Push Polling: In both Iowa and New Hampshire, voters received out-of-state calls from supporters of Gov. Mike Huckabee claiming to run an impartial survey. However, once a voter identified themselves as a Romney supporter, they were subjected to negative information about the governor. The information received is patently false.

Current medal count

Thanks to John Cronin for the current delegate count, which Mitt leads. But let’s also try this with an Olympics theme. USA! USA!

Current medal count on the GOP 2008 Winter Games, in order:

Mitt: 1 gold (WY), 2 silvers (IA, NH)
Huck: 1 gold (IA), 1 bronze (NH)
McCain: 1 gold (NH)

Mitt also leads the popular vote counting only IA and NH (couldn’t find the info for WY, which should add significantly to his lead). While McCain’s win is impressive for his comeback from the dead, he’ll start getting real scrutiny once the charm wears off. I find it hard to anoint him the GOP nominee just yet with just one win under his belt, particularly with the name recognition in NH and having carried it decisively in 2000. I believe his margin of victory tonight was by less than he beat GW back then.

USA! USA!

Lessons Learned?

If I had to cite lessons learned, I’d focus on the last few days in NH where I think Mitt was making a rebound before time ran out. Here is my sense as a true lay observer:

1. The debates helped. Why? Piling on didn’t look good for John, even though he came out the victor tonight. And in the 2d debate the press was uniformly positive, I think because Mitt stayed on his message. People seem to want to connect with him, and he succeeded in that 2d debate.

2. Mitt seemed to “find his voice” (to use his term). Again he started connecting with people. Mitt just seems too good to be true to some. It seems the best way to combat that is to let them get to know you personally; put yourself out there and stir real emotion (remaining presidential, of course).

3. As Mitt stayed on message about change and fixing Washington, people seemed to see someone they could vote for, instead of someone they’re less likely to vote against.

4. The main stream media is mostly just looking for a story. That may not sound like a revelation, but I personally don’t think the press is always biased (okay, Jonathan Martin at the Politico seems to be). The focus just goes to the “story”: Obama’s charisma, John McCain’s resurrection, Hillary’s tears; etc. Mitt needs to find a positive story (perhaps a decisive win in Michigan!) for them to report on. Comebacks seem to attract attention (McCain has had one, Huckabee has had one, Obama has had one, Clinton has had one–now it’s our turn).

Bottom line from the above: I think Mitt’s got a great, positive message he can continue to deliver and I’d encourage him to get out there and deliver it passionately, like we know he can. There’s a reason the National Review chose him: his positions on all the issues, which I know he believes in. And we shouldn’t necessarily look for any breaks from the media, nor take it too personally if they’re negative. It’s kind of like the refs in a sports contest: you can’t complain about them, you just have to play through it and give them something good to talk about.

The Independent Factor

The thought was Independents would pile on for Obama, but perhaps they went to McCain instead, thinking Obama had it in the bag. Here’s a quote from CNN tonight:

exit polls showed 37 percent of those who cast a Republican ballot Tuesday identified themselves as independents, and McCain got the votes of 39 percent of them, compared with 27 percent for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who finished second Tuesday. Romney and McCain were almost even among those who identified themselves as Republicans, with 33 and 34 percent, respectively”

While it’s clear McCain got more of them, I wonder where the rest went (only 66% of Independents voting Republican are accounted for above). In any event one final takeaway from this is not to get too cocky about Obama’s ability to draw Independents, or to even beat Hillary. Some good news in that is that the Democratic race may be as lengthy as the GOP race. Some had said a long fight in the GOP after the Dems had already anointed their candidate would favor the Democrats. Even more good news–Republican turnout was quite high in NH as well, meaning the GOP is paying attention, as we all know they should. And to repeat, with all the record turnout, MITT LEADS THE POPULAR VOTE.

USA! USA!

“I’M NOT SURE THAT I SUPPORT THE TROOP SURGE …”

January 6th, 2008 | 10 Comments | Posted in 2008, Mike Huckabee, Mike Huckabee, Surge

Gov. Huckabee Confronted With The Videotape

“That’s a pretty clear contradiction. … you didn’t say you supported the surge, you said, ‘I’m not sure that I support the troop surge.’ … according to this evidence you did not support the surge before Mitt Romney. … I don’t know how you can have it both ways on that, governor.” – ABC’s George Stephanopoulos (ABC’s “This Week,” 1/6/08)

In Last Night’s Debate, Gov. Huckabee Mad False Claims About The Troop Surge:

Huckabee Claimed He Supported The Surge And Wrongly Claimed Gov. Romney Didn’t. “I supported the president in the war before you did. I supported the surge when you didn’t.” (ABC, Republican Presidential Candidate Debate, Manchester, NH, 1/5/08)

This Morning, Gov. Huckabee Was Confronted With The Fact That He Did Not Support The Surge While, In Fact, Gov. Romney Did:

ABC’s George Stephanopoulos: “That’s A Pretty Clear Contradiction.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “You also, you and Mitt Romney went at it on the surge as well. Here is what you said last night.” HUCKABEE (TAPE): “I supported the president in the war before you did. I supported the surge when you didn’t.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “But last January when you were asked on another program whether you agreed with Mitt Romney and John McCain on support of the surge, you said this.” HUCKABEE (TAPE): “Well, I’m not sure that I support the troop surge if that surge has to come from our guard and reserve troops, which have really been overly stretched.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “That’s a pretty clear contradiction.” (ABC’s “This Week,” 1/6/08; www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPkCgQhW3gI)

Stephanopoulos: “Well, You Didn’t Say You Supported The Surge, You Said, ‘I’m Not Sure That I Support The Troop Surge.’” HUCKABEE: “What I said was that the surge I supported but the concern that I had was because as the commander in chief of the National Guard…” STEPHANOPOULOS: “Well, you didn’t say you supported the surge, you said, ‘I’m not sure that I support the troop surge.’” (ABC’s “This Week,” 1/6/08; www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPkCgQhW3gI)

Stephanopoulos: “According To This Evidence You Did Not Support The Surge Before Mitt Romney.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “But, do you retract your statement from last night? Because according to this evidence you did not support the surge before Mitt Romney.” HUCKABEE: “No, I don’t retract because I did support the surge. Separate the surge from the fact that I said that we need to have a different approach when it comes…” (ABC’s “This Week,” 1/6/08; www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPkCgQhW3gI)

Stephanopoulos: “I Don’t Know How You Can Have It Both Ways On That, Governor.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “I don’t know how you can have it both ways on that, Governor. The surge did require the guard and reserve troops to be used so you either support it or you don’t.” HUCKABEE: “And I did support it.” STEPHANOPOULOS: “That’s not what you said on January 24th.” HUCKABEE: “Well, what I was speaking to was the specific overuse of guard and reserves over a long period of time and I do stand by that, George.” (ABC’s “This Week,” 1/6/08; www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPkCgQhW3gI)

Watch Gov. Huckabee Confronted With The Videotape Here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPkCgQhW3gI

FACT: One Year Ago, As Gov. Romney Supported The Surge, Gov. Huckabee Did Not:

Gov. Huckabee, January 2007: “Well, I’m Not Sure That I Support The Troop Surge.” MSNBC’s NORAH O’DONNELL: “We have a Rudy Giuliani, who supports the president’s plan on Iraq. We have Governor Mitt Romney, who also supports a troop surge. How are you different from any of those candidates.” HUCKABEE: “Well, I’m not sure that I support the troop surge, if that surge has to come from our Guard and Reserve troops, which have really been overly stretched.” (MSNBC’s “Live,” 1/24/07)

Watch Gov. Huckabee NOT Support The Troop Surge In January 2007: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLquRK7sNs0

Oh Really?

Gov. Huckabee Once Claimed “People Aren’t Going To Find Me In A YouTube Moment From 10 Years Ago Saying Something Substantially Different Than I’m Saying Today.” GOV. HUCKABEE: “I think it’s a combination of convictions that are consistent. People aren’t going to find me in a YouTube moment from 10 years ago saying something substantially different than I’m saying today.” (CNN’s “The Situation Room,” 7/23/07)
