The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Assoc. PAC Endorses Whitman for CA. Gov.

February 22nd, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in 2010 Election, California, Meg Whitman

I am thrilled to share some exciting news. The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association Political Action Committee today announced its endorsement of my campaign for Governor.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is among the most respected and effective public policy organizations fighting for hardworking Californians. The association is the state’s largest grassroots taxpayer organization with more than 200,000 members. There is no organization that better understands the relationship between low taxes and individual prosperity.

I am honored and grateful to receive the endorsement.

“High taxes and out-of-control spending have pushed state government to the brink of bankruptcy, and we need strong leadership to put California back on track,” Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association President Jon Coupal said. “Meg Whitman is the only fiscal conservative in the race, and her commitment to cutting spending and eliminating waste, fraud and abuse is the way to restore prosperity to the Golden State.”

Notes from the Meg Whitman Campaign

January 24th, 2010 | Comments Off | Posted in 2010 Election, California, Meg Whitman, Republican Party, Taxes

As a small businesswoman, I can appreciate why so many small businesses in California are suffering.

My husband and I opened Cielito Lindo, a Mexican restaurant in South El Monte, in 1986. We provide jobs for more than 60 people and contribute our fair share to federal, state and local tax authorities. But like so many small businesses in California, we’ve been forced to lay off employees, trim paychecks and cut overhead just to stay afloat.

For California’s economy to rebound, we must encourage growth among the state’s small businesses.

That’s why I am supporting Republican Meg Whitman to be California’s next governor. Meg has the right kind of leadership experience and bold vision to help small businesses grow our economy, and she will make certain California stays friendly to small business owners.

As governor, Meg will cut taxes, reduce regulations and modify workplace rules to give small businesses like mine greater incentive to invest, expand and hire more workers as well as keep California competitive with other states.

Meg Whitman is the only candidate in this race with common sense solutions to stimulate our economy. And return California again to a place where small businesses can prosper.

California Greenies Hit Panic Button over Meg Whitman’s Environmental Policies

December 17th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in California, Global Warming, Meg Whitman, Sarah Palin

Meg Whitman’s surge in the polls, pulling up even with former Governor Moonbeam, Jerry Brown, has caused Cali’s greenies to hit the panic button and release a negative radio ad, decrying Meg’s environmental policies, which automatically makes me think that Meg is on the right track.

How these folks can believe that they have any credibility left after the release of the “climate-gate” emails showing the faked, fraudulent “science” behind the “global warming” scam, is beyond me.

Meg is an outstanding business woman and she understands that excessive regulation is a job killer and with areas of the Golden State suffering under the weight of 40% unemployment, the last thing that beleaguered state needs is another pallet load of bricks for it’s companies to carry.

By: Courage Campaign

Airing on radio stations in Los Angeles, Sacramento and the Silicon Valley on the final day of the world summit on global warming in Copenhagen, the 60-second spot highlights the fact that Meg Whitman and Sarah Palin share the same view on the climate crisis. Both argue that nothing should be done right now to address the problem — Whitman has said she would suspend Assembly Bill 32, California’s landmark carbon reduction law, as her first act in office.

A Message from Meg December 11, 2009

December 12th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 2010 Election, California, Meg Whitman, Mitt Romney

A Message from Meg December 11, 2009

This week, I spoke at the Valley Industry and Commerce Association’s 60th annual meeting. For six decades, VICA has been fighting to improve our economy by advocating for local businessmen and women in the San Fernando Valley.

Unfortunately, it’s not surprising California has one of the worst business climates in the nation. The cost of doing business here is just too high. I have a plan to improve our business climate and help the private sector create two million jobs by 2015. To read more about my plan, please click here.

I also met with members of the Pasadena Republican Club. There I had a chance to tell GOP activists about myself and my vision for the state. It was a great event.

Like many of you, I’m also busy getting ready for the holidays. I look forward to catching up with you soon.

Whitman lays out her plan for California

December 11th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 2010 Election, California, Meg Whitman, Republican Party, Republicans

http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_13973787

By: Kevin Mosesti

UNIVERSAL CITY — Meg Whitman, the billionaire former eBay CEO who is running for governor of California, introduced her campaign to San Fernando Valley business leaders Thursday by saying she would focus on “jobs, spending and education.”

The occasion was the Valley Industry & Commerce Association’s 60th annual meeting, which drew a bigger-than-usual luncheon crowd of about 400, many intent on hearing the woman who leads early polls for next June’s Republican gubernatorial primary.

Whitman told them Sacramento has tried to tackle too many problems at once.

“Let’s do three things at 100 percent instead of 10 or 15 things at 20 percent,” she said.
She said her No. 1 priority would be trying to restore jobs by putting a moratorium on new business regulations and making key tax cuts.

“If we don’t put jobs first, and make California the best place to start a business and grow a business, there is no way out of (the state’s economic) mess,” Whitman said, pacing a stage at the Universal Hilton Hotel with a hand-held microphone.

Reducing government spending and inefficiency was priority No. 2.

Whitman called K-12 education her No. 3 focus but “my personal passion.”

If California doesn’t improve its schools, she said, “we will end up with a second-rate work force and a second-rate state.”

She called for following a Florida plan that has included “grading” schools A-F, adding charter schools, and paying more for good teachers.

Adding personality to a packed resume, Whitman spiced her fast-paced, 20-minute speech with more punchlines than political applause lines.

The Long Island, N.Y., native who attended Princeton and Harvard business school told the audience how she moved to California when her neurosurgeon husband chose an internship at UC San Francisco over Harvard.

“He looked at me with a little wink and said, `Meg, your mother lives in Boston - we should go to California,”‘ Whitman said, grinning.

Whitman, 53, was an executive with Walt Disney Co. in Burbank and other California companies before leading eBay’s rapid growth.

VICA member Manny Grace, a senior vice president and counsel in Disney’s environmental health and safety department, said he knew Whitman only from her radio ads and was eager to judge the rookie campaigner.

“I thought she was very good,” Grace said after the speech. “It was kind of light on details — who doesn’t want to improve education? — but I liked her. There weren’t many applause lines. Maybe she doesn’t leave enough time in between. That’ll come with experience.”

Meg’s Run

December 7th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in California, McCain, Meg Whitman, Mitt Romney

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1945363,00.html?iid=tsmodule

By Sheelah Kolhatkar

There are several clever mantras that Meg Whitman chants while she’s campaigning to be the next governor of California: “Don’t try to boil the ocean” (taking too broad of an agenda to Sacramento), “All roads lead to Florida” (a model of how to fix the education system), “I am not ‘kumbaya’ about this” (she understands the difficulty of being governor) and, finally, the kind of oversimplified sound bite that is especially maddening to her critics, “You’ve got to find 20% of the reforms that will get you 80% of the way home.”

One afternoon in late October, Whitman, 53, was pulling all the jingles out, like clubs from a golf bag. It was the sort of performance that the former CEO of eBay–and newcomer to the whirlpool known as electoral politics–has become almost slick at delivering. She was standing on a platform, microphone in hand, at the edge of a beautiful garden in the wealthy desert enclave of Rancho Mirage, a town described as a “hotbed of GOP cash” by an attendee. She is no longer the frumpy corporate mascot who was once photographed in a beige turtleneck and high-waisted slacks, surrounded by a team of Silicon Valley executives. The new Whitman wears a lean, dark suit with a camisole peeking tastefully out and stylish heels, her face dusted with a California glow.

“Let me tell you about my mother,” she said, not for the first time that week. She talked about Margaret Whitman Sr.’s daring service as an airplane and truck mechanic for the Red Cross in New Guinea during World War II and how it motivated the younger Meg. She rattled off her own accomplishments–college at Princeton followed by Harvard Business School, her move to San Francisco with her neurosurgeon husband, her transformation of eBay from a midsize start-up into a high-tech powerhouse while raising two boys, her postretirement role as an adviser to Mitt Romney and later Senator John McCain during his presidential campaign. “They inspired me to think beyond a career in business,” Whitman said.

Most of the questions at the end were fairly standard for a conservative Southern California crowd.

“Can you talk about the unions and their stranglehold on Sacramento?” asked a woman in the audience. A second woman asked Whitman about the threat of pregnant illegal immigrants who cross the border to win citizenship for their newborns. Then a third woman piped in, rather timidly, asking, “How can we keep religious radicals out of our party? I think that’s why they’ve lost a lot of votes, with the opposition of gay inclusion or opposing women’s choice.”

Whitman paused, almost as if it were the first time that day that she had to think about her answer. “I am happy to tell people where I stand on the social issues, but I think, as Republicans and Californians, we have to lead with the things that will make the most difference in the near term,” she said. “I don’t want to exclude anyone from the party. I don’t want to exclude anyone from my campaign. I want everyone to be a part of this. But let’s rally around what we can mostly agree on.”

CA Gov. Race: Meg Whitman 41%, Jerry Brown 41%

November 19th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in California, Meg Whitman, Mitt Romney, Republican Party, Republicans

Meg Whitman has closed a 9 point gap with former Governor Jerry “Governor Moonbeam” Brown. Although Meg is not as conservative on some of the social issues as I would like, she has great pro business and pro tax cuts positions that are the prescription for what ails California’s economy.

She will also help Gov. Romney immeasurably if she wins in California. She may be the key to tipping the Golden State to the Republican column in 2012.

Go Meg!! Go Mitt!!

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections2/election_2010/election_2010_governor_elections/california/election_2010_california_governor_election

State Attorney General Jerry Brown is the only major Democrat still running for governor of California next year, and now he’s tied with Republican hopeful Meg Whitman at 41% each in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state.

Three percent (3%) of California voters favor some other gubernatorial candidate, and 14% are undecided.

In late September, Brown was ahead 44% to 35% in a hypothetical match-up with former eBay executive Whitman.

Brown still runs ahead of two other potential GOP candidates for governor, State Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and Tom Campbell, an ex-congressman and former state finance director.

In a match-up with Poizner, Brown wins by 11 points – 43% to 32%, roughly the same margin as in the previous survey. Seven percent (7%) like some other candidate, but 18% are not sure whom they’ll support.

Brown holds a nine-point lead over Campbell – 42% to 33% - with six percent (6%) behind some other candidate and 19% not sure. This, too, marks little change from September.

What has changed is that San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom dropped out of the race for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination last month. In the September survey, all three Republicans had modest leads over Newsom.

Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is term-limited by law and cannot seek reelection next year. Perhaps it’s just as well since only 29% of California voters now approve of Schwarzenegger’s job performance, including six percent (6%) who strongly approve. But 69% disapprove of how he is handling his job, with 30% who strongly disapprove.

Twenty-four percent (24%) of voters in the state have a very favorable opinion of Brown, who previously served as governor from 1975 to 1983. He is not covered by the term limits law since it did not go into effect until 1990. Thirty percent (30%), however, view him very unfavorably.

Whitman is viewed very favorably by 16% and very unfavorably by 10%.

Poizner’s very favorables are seven percent (7%), his very unfavorables six percent (6%). For Campbell, very favorables total 13% and very unfavorables seven percent (7%).

At this point in a campaign, Rasmussen Reports considers the number of people with a strong opinion more significant than the total favorable/unfavorable numbers.

But all three Republican candidates have name-recognition problems to work on in the months ahead. Just 11% know so little about Brown, an active player in state politics for nearly 40 years, that they don’t even venture a soft opinion of him. By contrast, 26% are not sure what they think of Whitman, and nearly 40% say the same of both Poizner and Campbell.

Throughout America’s history, there has been no institution that exemplifies excellence like our armed services, and no one deserves more credit than our veterans. As conflicts persist overseas, let’s all be mindful of today’s importance. Californians should take time to give thanks to our men and women in uniform and their families. News from Meg Whitman’s Campaign

November 5th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 2010 Election, California, Meg Whitman

Breaking News

A Message From The Campaign

While it’s still very early in this campaign, brand new poll results show more California Republicans are responding to Meg’s vision for moving California in a new direction.

According to the latest Capitol Weekly/Probolsky Research poll, “Meg Whitman captures 36.7% of our Republican Primary Election ballot test for 2010 Governor - a dramatic increase of 26.5% since our last survey. This indicates Whitman is the clear leader among Republican candidates, placing her 22% ahead of Tom Campbell. Steve Poizner trails Whitman and Campbell.”

There’s still lots of work to be done, but this is an encouraging sign that voters see Meg as the type of strong leader with a focused vision that California needs.

Meg Whitman Announces Water Deal for California

***Press Release***

MEG WHITMAN MAKES STATEMENT ON WATER LEGISLATION

For Immediate Release
Wednesday, November 4, 2009 CONTACT: Sarah Pompei 408.457.1369

CUPERTINO - Meg Whitman, Republican candidate for Governor, today issued a statement on the state Legislature’s approval of a plan to address the state’s water crisis:

“Finally, we have a water deal. It’s a good start to solving a crisis years in the making. Looking ahead, it’s clear that the hardest work is yet to come, including keeping close tabs on how the bond money is spent. We must ensure that this deal in fact delivers what Californians expect: A real fix to our outdated water delivery system that includes new dams to capture and store runoff and a new delivery channel around the Delta to give farmers and cities an affordable, safe supply of water while protecting the Delta’s ecosystem. I am troubled by the last-minute additions to increase the size of the bond, another example of legislators’ bad habit of bending to entrenched interests. We need new leadership in Sacramento that will curb excessive spending and focus on real solutions to our infrastructure crisis and other big challenges.”

Border Security: A Key Reason Why I Have Endorsed Meg Whitman

November 4th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 2010 Election, California, Illegal Immigration, Meg Whitman

http://www.redcounty.com/border-security-a-key-reason-why-i-have-endorsed-meg-whitman

By: Rep. Ed Royce

The following is a RedCounty.com EXCLUSIVE:

In my time in Congress, I have made safeguarding our nation’s borders a top priority. An unsecured border puts our nation at unacceptable risk.

Legal immigration is part of the fabric of California’s rich history. But illegal immigration threatens to undermine our security. We must restore the integrity of our nation’s borders and reestablish respect for our immigration laws.

I am supporting Meg Whitman for Governor because she is a proven leader who focuses on finding solutions to crucial issues such as illegal immigration. She understands that California can no longer afford to look the other way. And she recognizes that, more than any border governor, it is the Governor of California who commands the strongest position to influence the federal government to act to stem illegal immigration.

Meg Whitman will be exactly the kind of outspoken advocate we need.

As Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade, I believe that when it comes to immigration policy, national security should be our main priority. This is why I am focused on a sound border enforcement plan.

Knowing of the border vulnerabilities America faces, I cosponsored the Secure Fence Act, and strongly supported it when it passed by overwhelming majorities in the House and Senate.

We need a Governor who will forcefully push for federal vigilance to keep our borders safe, including deploying enough border patrol agents and building physical barriers. Whitman will do that.

We cannot ignore the steep challenge our employers face when verifying the legal status of their employees. I am an original cosponsor of the Secure America with Verification and Enforcement (SAVE) Act. The goal is to help stop the lure of illegal immigration by implementing mandatory work authorization verification. We must provide employers the tools and resources necessary to enforce immigration laws. And those who knowingly hire illegal immigrants should face sanctions.

As I do, Whitman believes there must be accountability in the system and employers must have access to a vigorous and reliable system for verifying their workers’ eligibility.

Once and for all, we need coordinated state and federal action to crack down on sanctuary cities that make a mockery of our immigration laws.

It is unconscionable that major California cities, including San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles, continue to flagrantly ignore the law with impunity. Like me, Meg believes the concept of sanctuary cities flies in the face of a society ruled by law. It is untenable that criminals who entered the U.S. illegally can be allowed to roam free to victimize law-abiding Californians.

In July 2008, a criminal gang member and convicted felon here illegally killed a San Francisco father and his two sons during a traffic altercation. But under San Francisco’s sanctuary policy, because he was a juvenile felon, he was never turned over to immigration authorities for deportation.

Instead, he murdered.

Unbelievably, earlier this month, the city’s Board of Supervisors voted overwhelmingly to prohibit city law enforcement from handing over undocumented juveniles arrested for felonies to federal authorities. The law says the city only will turn them over if they are convicted.

Meg Whitman, as I do, refuses to accept these extraordinarily blatant violations of federal law that jeopardize the public’s safety.

We need a leader like Meg Whitman in Sacramento who will advocate for an immigration policy that first and foremost protects our borders.

RICHARD RIORDAN ENDORSES MEG WHITMAN

Former LA Mayor Says Whitman Is “Best Candidate” To Lead The State

For Immediate Release

Monday, October 26, 2009 CONTACT: Sarah Pompei 408.457.1369

CUPERTINO - Meg Whitman, Republican candidate for Governor, today announced the endorsement of Mayor Richard Riordan. He served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003 to 2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993 to 2001.

“I appreciate Richard Riordan’s steadfast commitment to education reform,” Whitman said. “Over the decades, he has worked relentlessly to ensure every California student has access to a quality education. I am honored to have Mayor Riordan’s endorsement and he will be an asset to my team.”

“Meg believes the future of our state and the strength of our nation depend on Californians rededicating ourselves to education,” said Riordan. “Her commitment to returning control of our schools back to parents and teachers and demanding accountability makes Meg the best candidate.”

Riordan is now of counsel in the Los Angeles office of Bingham McCutchen. He was elected Mayor of Los Angeles in 1993 and overwhelmingly reelected in 1997. During this time, he worked successfully with community and business leaders to revitalize the City of Los Angeles, which was hit hard by the recession of the early 1990s.

As Mayor, he empowered residents to take responsibility for the well being of their neighborhoods and gave community organizations a greater voice in city government.

“Meg Whitman is the right person at the right time for California. She has the know-how to bring fiscal discipline back to our state at long last,” said Dianne Jacob, Chairwoman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “With Meg as our Governor, local governments won’t have to live in fear of a bankrupt state pillaging our local budgets.”

MEG WHITMAN ANNOUNCES PUBLIC SAFETY COALITION LEADERSHIP

October 14th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 2010 Election, California, Meg Whitman

***PRESS RELEASE***

District attorneys, sheriffs to lead public safety coalition

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, October 13, 2009 CONTACT: Sarah Pompei 408.457.1369

CUPERTINO - Meg Whitman, Republican candidate for Governor, today announced the leaders of her public safety coalition, a group including several of the state’s most respected law enforcement officials. The team will help Whitman develop her plan for strengthening California’s public safety system, finding more effective ways to fight crime and keeping Californians safe.

“Public safety is government’s first responsibility and must be its highest priority. We cannot truly enjoy freedom or prosper without the assurance that our families will be safe in their homes and their places of work and play,” Whitman said. “Sacramento has lost touch with its obligation to Californians. Our public safety coalition is made up of local law enforcement professionals and we will work together to ensure convicted criminals serve their full sentences and our communities are safe.”

Whitman’s public safety coalition includes elected law enforcement officials from around the state. Whitman has been honored by the California District Attorneys Association for her leadership in helping to defeat Proposition 5, a misguided attempt away from zero tolerance and towards decriminalization of illegal drugs. Whitman, who co-chaired the opposition campaign, contributed $250,000 to defeat the November 2008 initiative.

Whitman is a strong supporter of the “Three Strikes and You’re Out Law” and opposes any state and federal proposals to release criminals early. She backs swifter enforcement of the state’s death penalty law. She believes in working with local law enforcement to develop effective crime prevention and rehabilitation programs that do not jeopardize public safety.

“Meg Whitman has an unwavering commitment to making public safety government’s top priority,” said Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully, a member of Whitman’s coalition. “Meg will not buckle under budget or political pressures to accept deals that put Californians in danger. She believes that criminals should be held fully responsible for the crimes they commit and she will rigorously protect victims’ rights and work with local law enforcement to keep Californians safe.”

Public Safety Co-Chairs

Michael Bradbury - Retired District Attorney, Ventura County
Gregg Cohen - District Attorney, Tehama County
Bonnie Dumanis - District Attorney, San Diego County
Ed Jagels - District Attorney, Kern County
Bill Kolender - Retired Sheriff, San Diego County
John McGinness - Sheriff, Sacramento County
Rod Pacheco - District Attorney, Riverside County
Jan Scully - District Attorney, Sacramento County

California farmers back Whitman, call her leader with comprehensive plan

Meg Whitman is making sense in California. She strikes as someone who works hard to get up to speed on the issues and does not try to substitute rhetorical flourishes for a brass tacks understanding of the issues.
