As many of you know who have been perusing this site for 3+ years, my nephew Devon lost a courageous battle with Leukemia on New Years Eve of last year. He fought like a warrior for almost as long as this blog has been around. He tried traditional chemotherapy, radiation, received a bone marrow transplant, and experimental treatments when there was no choice. But unfortunately we don’t know what God has in store for us, and he was called home.

Devon’s 12th birthday would have been September 26th, and we have decided to celebrate it in a big way. What we are doing is we are sponsoring another child with Leukemia that is either being treated at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for a wish. Devon was granted a wish of his own after he was first diagnosed with the disease, and we just know that he would be ecstatic to extend the same opportunity to another child faced with the same sets of procedures and treatments as he.

We are having a raffle here locally and selling raffle tickets and our local school is sponsoring a trike-a-thon for little kids to bike around our High School track, the trike-a-thon money is going exclusively to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital, as is 10% of our raffle ticket sales. Since most of the prizes are either going to be too big to ship or local to our area, I am looking for people to donate money to purchase prizes for the raffle.

My daughter Jessica and Cousin Devon 11 days apart…

As most of you know by my blog posts over the past couple of weeks, my nephew (my brother’s second oldest child) is dying of —>Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or ALL. It is not likely that by this time tomorrow that he will be with us.

I was so fortunate to speak to him on the phone yesterday morning and hear a strong voice. I was also able to make sure that what I wished for him to have (two packs of orange tick tacks…one of his favorite treats) were given to him. He is a very special boy, one that I will always be honored to have known. I appreciate all of the monetary donations toward his funeral and burial expenses, love, thoughts, and prayers that you’ve embraced my family and me with these past couple of weeks. At this point I would just like to ask for two things, one that you hold those that you love dear and closer than ever (you never know when they might part this earth…Devon is only 11), and that you continue to pray for our family during this extremely painful time. We’re sure going to miss that kid. Thanks to all, and goodnight!

Once again I’m putting this out there…

Devon Curling
Born September 26, 1996

While you’re enjoying your holiday season. While you’re watching your kids open those Christmas Presents and you snap those pictures, there is an eleven year old boy just outside of Cincinnati OH (who happens to be my nephew) who is enjoying his last one. He’s dying of leukemia. He loses more strength every day, and becomes paler and paler. Despite all of this though, he’s enjoying this holiday. He wakes up every single morning with a smile on his face and determination to live another day, and enjoy his brothers and sisters the most he can. But, one day soon there won’t be anymore days. His body will succumb and he will no longer be with us. I know that’s harsh but it’s the truth. Devon’s family has been overstressed the past 2 1/2 yrs dealing with numerous rounds of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and additional attempts with other medicine to keep him alive. This has taken a financial tole as well. There is a fund that has been set up for Devon’s funeral and burial expenses. You can donate to it one of the following ways:

I know that there are a lot of you who care so much about Devon and have prayed for him, and continue to pray for him and I so much appreciate it. I just wanted to appeal to your heart. Can you imagine this happening to your family, of all times at Christmas? Christmas is supposed to be that magical holiday for children, not a time of year when you have to bury them.
