John Kerry Angling for Secretary of State, Obama Ready to Sign Executive Orders to Move Country to the Left

October 19th, 2008 | 78 Comments | Posted in Barack Obama, Congress, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Taxes

Obama and his advisers, anticipating victory on Nov.4, are laying plans to move the country hard left. According to an article in the UK Times, some of this leftward shift will be accomplished via executive orders. Some of us will remember that this was one of Bill Clinton’s favorite tactics.

If the Dems achieve a Super Majority, look for one of two types of tax increases. One will be enacted by Congress. If Obama takes another page out of Clinton’s playbook, he will say after the election that the economy is in much worse shape than we were led to believe and that, regrettably, he will not be able to cut taxes on 95% of Americans after all. Since the Pubbies have blown their credibility and therefore the election, there won’t be enough of us in Congress to stop the tax increase and so Obama & Co. can do all the damage to our Tax Code that you would expect them to do, uncontested. The second type of tax increase that may be enacted is a stealth tax. If enough of the Blue Dog Democrats get some major heat from their constituencies on the tax increase proposals and vote with the remaining Pubbies to stop an outright tax hike, look for the Federal Reserve to foster an “easy money” policy that will generate inflationary pressures over time that will devalue your savings, hurt the dollar’s performance in the currency markets and make everything we need to try to stay in the middle class much more expensive.

The 2010 Congressional elections can’t come soon enough. In saying that, I am assuming that after the country gets a load of Obama’s vision for the country, we will rise up as we did in reaction to Bill and Hill’s first two years in office and recapture both Houses of Congress!

A senior official in the Obama camp, whose name has been submitted for FBI vetting, said: “We will be ready and we will be seen to be ready.”

He said that Mr Obama is close to finalising plans for his first 100 days in power - which will include major moves on the economy, healthcare and Iraq in his first week, designed to make his priorities clear to Americans.

He is planning a series of early interventions to stamp his authority on the economic crisis. This will include legislation proposing a $300bn stimulus package which would be published before President Bush has even left the White House, so that it can be passed as soon as he takes power.

Mr. Obama is also planning executive orders that do not require legislation on his first day in office, which could include plans to promote renewable energy resources and create jobs.

His transition team, which is reportedly much more extensive and active than Mr McCain’s, features 10 working groups in different policy areas to convert campaign promises into concrete legislation. It is chaired by John Podesta, Bill Clinton’s former White House chief of staff who runs the Centre for American Progress, a think tank long seen as a Democratic administration in exile.

Mr. Podesta is working closely with Michael Signer, a former foreign policy aide to John Edwards in charge of homeland security affairs. Mr Podesta and Jason Furman, one of Mr Obama’s two most influential economic advisers, have already held talks with sceptical conservative Democrats to line up the votes to pass a stimulus package.

Mr. Obama has also worked to cultivate a close relationship with the Treasury Secretary, Henry Paulson, and personally asked him to help out during the transition, sparking speculation that he might keep Mr Paulson in post for the first year of his presidency.

Ms. Kumar said: “There are things that a president can do immediately that establish his brand of leadership and help establish with the public what the priorities are.

“Reagan issued executive orders at the luncheon following the inauguration. He didn’t even wait to get to the White House. He wanted to show how seriously he took the issue of the economy.”

FBI vetting is also under way on 100 people from both campaigns, including Susan Rice, expected to be made the second successive black woman national security adviser after Condoleezza Rice; Greg Craig, a Washington lawyer tipped to become Mr Obama’s chief White House counsel and his likely White House chief of staff; and the former senator and campaign chairman Tom Daschle. If Daschle prefers to become Health Secretary, Obama’s current chief of staff Pete Rouse, nicknamed the 101st Senator for his connections on Capitol Hill, would take the job.

Other key national security officials will include Denis McDonough, chief foreign affairs adviser to the campaign and Richard Danzig, a secretary of the Navy under Clinton.

John Kerry, the Democratic candidate four years ago, and his fellow senator Chris Dodd, a failed candidate this year, are vying to become Secretary of State.

Mr Kerry, an Army veteran, is also a contender to take control of the Pentagon, but many expect that post to go to a Republican, perhaps the maverick senator Chuck Hagel. Colin Powell, a former secretary of state and chairman of the joint chiefs could return to government if he endorses Obama, as many expect. The veteran Democratic Senator Sam Nunn’s name is also in the frame.

McCain Will Beat Obama in Mass., I’ll Beat Kerry, Beatty Says

Jeff Beatty has come out swinging in an interview with the POLITICKERMA.COM. It seems the former Delta Force veteran is less than intimidated by “The One”.

Responding to a recent poll showing presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s lead over presumptive GOP nominee John McCain in Massachusetts narrowing, Jeff Beatty (R), the Republican challenging U.S. Sen. John Kerry, predicted victory in both his race and for McCain in Massachusetts.

A 7News/Suffolk University poll released Monday showed Obama (Ill.) with a nine-point lead over McCain (Ariz.) - 47 percent to 38 percent. The last 7News/Suffolk University poll, released a month and a half ago, showed Obama leading McCain by 23 points, 53 percent to 30 percent.

“People see him for what he is,” Beatty told PolitickerMA.com referring to Obama. “Obama is shallow. He’s an empty suit. He doesn’t have the relevant experience to work the country out of its problems and John McCain does. I’ve been advocating an action policy to solve these problems and that’s resonating with voters. That’s why I’ll say McCain is going to carry Massachusetts and I’m going to beat John Kerry.”

The Beatty camp contends that McCain is gaining ground in Massachusetts because Bay State voters are not comfortable voting for Obama. Obama’s recent shifts in position on energy policy, they say, have raised doubts about where Obama stands. At the same time, they say, McCain’s brand remains strong among unenrolled voters in Massachusetts.

Beatty said Massachusetts voters may be reluctant to support a candidate about whom they know little after Gov. Deval Patrick’s (D-Milton) missteps after he first took office.

“It’s a function of knowing your voters,” Beatty said, “being out there and listening to them. They’ve seen this movie before; it was John Kerry and Deval Patrick the first time it came out. They don’t’ want to see the John Kerry and Barack Obama version of the movie.”

This isn’t the first time Beatty has predicted McCain would win Massachusetts. In an interview with PolitickerMA.com on July 22, Beatty said if McCain picked former Gov. Mitt Romney (R) to be his vice presidential candidate, he would carry Massachusetts.

Ultimately, Beatty said he is seeing the momentum turning in the GOP’s favor.
“I believe that John McCain will win the 12 electoral votes of the commonwealth of Massachusetts,” he said. “What you saw in the poll yesterday, that’s a tremendous swing.”

Analysts Chime In: Would Kerry Leave the Senate for a Position in an Obama Administration?

Many things concern me about an Obama Administration. His inexperience in foreign affairs, his non-existent legislative accomplishments, his hard left economics and the company he has kept for 20 years. This articles speculates that Kerry might want to be Secretary of Defense in an Obama administration. The only group of people that Kerry could be persuaded to go to war against are the veterans of Operation Swift Boat that helped to scuttle his chances to win the 2004 presidential election.

As the presidential race plugs along and U.S. Sen. John Kerry (D-Boston) continues his work as a surrogate for presumptive Democratic nominee U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, one hot topic of conversation among the Massachusetts political punditry is whether Kerry is eyeing a spot in a possible Obama administration.

Asked if he thought Kerry would leave, Michael Goldman, a veteran Boston Democratic political strategist responded, “Absolutely. If there was a position, either secretary of state or secretary of defense, I think that he would jump at the opportunity to serve his country in either of those capacities. Maybe UN Ambassador is a third possibility…But certainly there’s no question in my mind that he would love to have an opportunity to do any of those jobs, and quite frankly, I think he believes he’d do a great job with of them.”

To be fair, Kerry has repeatedly said that is not the case. Kerry, who is currently facing a primary challenge from Gloucester attorney Ed O’Reilly and a Republican challenge from former CIA and FBI agent Jeff Beatty, has said he is only focused on returning to the senate for his fifth term.

“It’s Time To Replace John Kerry With One of Us”

July 22nd, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Congress, Jeff Beatty, John Kerry

I just got an email from the Massachusett’s Senatorial Campaign of Jeff Beatty (R) who is running for John Kerry’s seat. They have just put up a petition on his website, asking Mass. resident’s to show their support for Jeff Beatty’s plan to replace one of the U.S. Congress’ most liberal Senators with a conservative who supports tax relief for the middle class and enforcing our border laws.

For any of our Mittheads who are residents of Massachusetts, please click onto Mr. Beatty’s website and sign the petition. This may be the first real opportunity in 24 years to replace this Uber-Liberal with a Senator who can relate to the challenges of middle-class Americans.

~~John Cronin~~

Dear Voters of Massachusetts,

For the past 24 years, John Kerry has enjoyed the status of being your junior senator. This elite millionaire has a history of supporting higher taxes for the middle and working classes, and in the last 8 years has not passed a single bill into law. Every American is hurt by Kerry’s time in the senate, but only you, the citizens of Massachusetts, can vote him out. So this November, we are asking you to do just that.

John Forbes Kerry has earned the great distinction of being ranked as the richest American senator, with an estimated personal net worth of $200 million (not including his wife’s fortune). And yet, when he’s not windsurfing, spending time in one of his mansions or boating in his multi-million dollar yacht, Kerry is crushing middle and working class families and small businesses with his pro-tax agenda.
Here is a small sampling of the votes cast by John Kerry in the first half of 2008 alone:

• John Kerry voted against amendments to provide extensions of tax relief for renewable energy production, combat pay for soldiers, and higher-education.

• John Kerry voted against a Federal income tax deduction for individuals purchasing health insurance outside the workplace.

• John Kerry voted against a bill to protect small businesses, family ranches and farms from the Death Tax.

Kerry was advised to look more “presidential” by voting to support the Iraq war, and when public opinion shifted against it, so did his position. Who could forget this quote: “I actually did vote for the $87 billion dollars, before I voted against it.” Kerry voted to send America’s children and loved-ones into a war purely for his own personal and political gains. When his agenda changed, so did his vote — now in direct opposition to the very same troops he helped put in harm’s way.

As citizens of one of the other 49 United States, we cannot vote to replace John Forbes Kerry this November, but this does not mean his actions have not adversely affected us all. So we will support you in Massachusetts. We will donate, we will blog, we will call talk radio, but we, the rest of the United States of America, must rely on you, the citizens of the great Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to end Kerry’s 24-year reign in the senate and replace him with Jeff Beatty, a Senator who will fight for every American family, every American job and for the protection of the Country we all love.

Gritty Gloucester Man Puts Kerry to Test

The BOSTON HERALD reports that John Kerry may be vulnerable in his first primary challenge since being elected to the Senate in 1984. A Suffolk University poll from last year showed only 37% of Massachusetts voters supported his re-election.

I have been supporting the candidacy of his Republican challenger, Jeff Beatty, on the assumption that Beatty would be matched up with Kerry. Wouldn’t it be a shocker if Kerry doesn’t get past his primary challenge with Ed O’Reilly!!

http://news.bostonherald.com/news/opinion/op_ed/view/2008_06_13_
Gritty_Gloucester_man_puts_Kerry_to_test/srvc=home&position=recent

O’Reilly is the perfect messenger for all those disappointed Hillaryites, especially the women who want to show Kerry just how angry they are that he accepted women’s work to elect him to four six-year terms, but abandoned the first woman with a serious shot for president.
Indeed, the buzz at the convention was that Kerry’s poll numbers are almost as bad as they were last year when Suffolk University showed 56 percent of voters sampled statewide saying it’s “time for someone else.” Only 37 percent favored his re-election.

Kerry’s trying hard to change that. At the state convention, he said, “With your help” Democrats could gain as many as seven Senate seats - enough to end GOP filibusters. And if Obama wins, Democrats could usher in “the first moment of progressive legislating since Lyndon Johnson was president.”

But O’Reilly will be no pushover on Kerry’s way to a general election match with Republican Jeff Beatty.

Thanks to Rival, Sen. Kerry Set for Summer Among Commoners

Dang! That is some very good writing from Howie Carr! I wish I could take credit for it, but I can’t. I’ll have to settle for posting it, instead.

This is John Forbes Kerry’s worst nightmare: He’s going to have to spend the summer campaigning . . . on the mainland.

Fall River, Chicopee, Haverhill, Lynn, Fitchburg - not a single one of those sweaty cities has any windsurfing worth a damn, not to mention a Ducati motorcycle dealer, damn, but Liveshot is going to spend the next three months pressing the flesh in those wretched burgs, searching in vain for a proper nouvelle cuisine brassiere while enduring the foul breath of the plebeians . . .

It’s Official: John Kerry to Have Primary Competition!

Uber-Liberal, 24 year Democratic incumbent and ertswhile Presidential candidate John Kerry will have to endure the indignity of a primary challenge from Gloucester attorney Ed O’Reilly.

To add insult to injury, if he survives the primary, he’ll then have to face the surging Jeff Beatty in the general election. That’s what happens when you are out of touch with your constituents.

~~John Cronin~~

Boston Globe

LOWELL –

Gloucester attorney Ed O’Reilly got enough support from party officials today to ensure that he will give US Senator John F. Kerry his first Democratic primary challenge in 24 years.

At the state Democratic Party convention at the Paul E. Tsongas Arena, O’Reilly got 22.5 percent of the 2,574 ballots cast, more than the 15 percent he needed to secure a spot on the primary ballot. Kerry got the majority of votes, which means he’ll get the party’s endorsement.

“Party officials said this campaign is a nuisance. And it is. It’s a total nuisance,” O’Reilly said to the convention floor. “Democracy is a nuisance. People said the American Revolution was a nuisance — and it was!”

Kerry, in his fourth six-year term, last had a serious challenge in 1996, from Governor William F. Weld, a Republican. He hasn’t had a primary opponent since 1984, when Kerry and three other Democrats ran for a seat vacated by Paul Tsongas.

Few predict the sitting senator will be vulnerable in a primary race. But it could mean more campaigning this summer – and marks an embarrassment that a former presidential candidate was unable to thwart the challenge from O’Reilly.

Mitt Romney Mentioned As Possible Candidate for US Senate Seat if Kennedy Unable to Complete Term

May 22nd, 2008 | 6 Comments | Posted in John Kerry, Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, Republican

Please don’t think I feel anything but best wishes for Sen. Kennedy and his family at this trying hour. As Republicans, we always want to win seats in the Congress, but not this way. I am writing about this only because it is possible, hopefully not probable, that Sen. Kennedy will not be able to serve out the remainder of his Senate term. If that turns out to be the case, then the people of Massachusetts will have to decide who will represent them. One of the names being mentioned is Mitt Romney.

For a brief time in 2004, it looked like U.S. Sen. John Kerry had a real shot at being elected president.

Massachusetts Democrats at the time feared that a Kerry victory would mean that Gov. Mitt Romney would get to appoint a fellow Republican to fill Kerry’s Senate seat.

The Democratically-controlled Legislature reacted by changing state law so that a vacated Senate seat would remain open until a special election could be held within 145 to 160 days, rather than have the governor appoint a replacement.

Now that law will prevent Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick from naming a successor should Sen. Edward Kennedy prove unable to complete his term because of a malignant brain tumor.

Going Against the Tide

“The Republican Party has become the party of the working man.” When is the last time I heard a quote like that?

If memory serves, 1988. It was Ronald Reagan, the candidate who brought the “Reagan Democrats” into the Republican Party. It feels so good to hear politicians talking like that again.

I’m sure the Democratic Party resents our “muscling in on their territory,” but hopefully, they’ll have to get used to it.

Congratulations to Linda Rapoza and the Fall River Republican City Committee for talking like Republicans who want to widen the Republican tent and represent small business people and blue collar workers who are being over regulated, over taxed, over burdened and under represented.

Fall River Spirit correspondent

Southeastern Massachusetts is one of the most liberal regions in the entire country.
So what has inspired a group of local Republicans to think they can make political inroads?
The Republican party has become the party of the working man,” says Linda Rapoza, chairwoman of the Fall River Republican City Committee which held its inaugural meeting last April 15. “The Democrats have a stranglehold on the business community and you can’t run a business without being suffocated with bureaucracy.”

Rapoza talks about the “New Republican Party.”

“The New Republican Party is dealing with issues that affect the working person.
This means less business regulation, lower taxes, and smaller bureaucracy. If you can’t run a business then you can’t create jobs.”

One of the more popular topics at the group’s first meeting was fund raising which would help support candidates running for office in Massachusetts.

C.J. Ferry is running against Kevin Aguiar in the 7th Bristol District, Jeff Beatty is running against John Kerry for the U.S. Senate, Earl Sholley is running against Barney Frank to become the 4th District Representative, and Bob Heroux is running for Bristol County Registrar. The elections will take place in November.

Rapoza points out that of the four candidates, three run small businesses. Ferry runs a computer business, Beatty runs a security business, and Sholley is a landscaper.

“The Democrats have become elitists,” Rapoza says.

“They’ve become limousine liberals. One of our major goals is to alert people to this distinction. We want to see Fall River become a two-party system.”

The Republicans’ next meeting is May 19 at the Elks Club on No. Main St. near Airport Road.
It will begin at 6:30 p.m. The group can be reached through their website at www.fallrivergop.org.
