Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is the polar opposite of John F. Kennedy.

Judging from recent comments, Obama apparently would pay no price, bear no burden, forsake any hardship, support any foe and oppose any friend that wished to pursue liberty. Kennedy understood that evil exists in the world. He saw it in World War II as his generation defeated the evil that gripped Europe and Japan. And he witnessed it as president when Nikita

Khrushchev approved the building of the Berlin Wall and the installation of Soviet missiles in Cuba, acts that flowed from Khrushchev’s perception that the young president was weak and inexperienced.

Obama thinks he can negotiate with evil and transform evil into something else. Initially his foreign policy platform was a naive pledge to meet “unconditionally” with the leaders of Iran, North Korea, Syria, Cuba and other nations dominated by dictators. In recent days he has changed his tune somewhat. He would still meet with the heads of these mini evil empires without preconditions, but “there must be careful preparation. We will set a clear agenda.”

This leads to an important question: On what basis does a free nation negotiate with nations that are not free? Does Obama expect leaders who got where they are by undemocratic, even violent means, to embrace press freedom, religious liberty, political pluralism and rights for women? What would evil leaders demand of him? Any concession given to dictators, who are not known for keeping their promises, would surely result in the United States being taken less seriously and contribute to the undermining of our national security.

It seems that every generation has a politician that young voters fall in love with. In the 1930’s and 40’s, it was Franklin Roosevelt. In the 1950’s it was Dwight Eisenhower. In the 1960’s it was John Kennedy. The 1970’s was the era of our withdrawal from Vietnam and the Watergate scandal that brought down Richard Nixon and so there was no politician to fall in love with in that decade. The 1980’s saw Ronald Reagan put together one of the broadest and most successful political coalitions this country has ever seen and people still remember Reagan fondly. To this day every Republican politician must pay his respects to Reagan’s legacy. The 1990’s, for the Democrats, saw a segment of the voting population fall in love with Bill Clinton, although he never went north of 50% in his two presidential elections. It seems that over half the country was immune to his charms. The first two national elections of the 21st century were very controversial and neither Bush nor Gore nor Kerry are the kind of politician that voters fall in love with.

Now comes the election year of 2008 and a new and inexperienced generation of voters have fallen in love with Obama. The old saying holds that “Love is blind” and it will be fascinating to see if Obama’s 20 year association with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers, a past member of the Weather Underground and self confessed bomber who says that he only regrets that he “didn’t do more” during his days as a violent radical, will at some point splash some cold water into the faces of his supporters and cause them to come to their senses.

Carrie Budoff Brown reports that Obama was asked about the exit polls at an avail (his second this week) in New Albany, IN.

“I have to say if you look at and I know my staff has talked about this: If you look at the numbers, in fact, our problem has less to do with white working class voters. In fact, the problem is that, to the extent there is a problem, is that the older voters are very loyal to Senator Clinton,” he said.

“And I think, you know, part of that is they’ve got a track record of voting for not just Senator Clinton but also her husband. And, you know, we want to make sure that they know that on issues that are of importance to them, like prescription drugs or pension and retirement security that I’ve got a strong track record on those issues and very specific plans to make sure they’re getting the kinds of help that they need. And, you know, if we do that effectively, which we have tried to do in all the states, then I think that we will end up doing very well here in Indiana.”
He was also asked about the criticism that he can’t close the deal.

“The way we are going to close the deal is by winning. And right now we are winning,” he said.
Also, a bit of bravado in response to suggestions that he’s not tough enough:

“I know that people like to talk tough and use a lot of rhetoric about fighting. I have always believed that if you are tough, you don’t have to talk about it,” he said.

Congratulations to Governor Romney and his campaign team on a great win in Michigan tonight! As they say down South, he gave the competition a “thumpin’.”

It will be fascinating to analyze the exit polls to see just what the dynamics of the voting indicates. One thing that jumped out of the stats I saw was that among Catholics who go to church weekly, 41% voted for Gov. Romney. So much for Pastor Mike’s attempt to divide and conquer.

Here is the updated delegate count. MSM pundits, pay very close attention to these numbers. Try to keep them in mind as you sit down at your desk and place your fingers on your computer’s keyboard.

These numbers should be the reason why you should exercise a healthy discipline with yourself if you are tempted to write another column or blog calling on Gov. Romney to withdraw from the race.

The reason that Gov. Romney has not taken your advise is because HE IS WINNING!!

I am obviously playing catch-up with my print edition of the WSJ, but this story is very much relevant even though it’s a few days old.

The results are clear. In the battle of “significant” campaign speeches, Mitt Romney’s Dec.6 “Faith In America” address has crushed Rudy Giuliani’s Dec. 15 “closing argument” campaign speech in one key barometer of buzz: YouTube.

As of Monday, a clip of Mr. Romney’s much anticipated address, in which he defended his Mormonism and explained the need for expressions of faith in public life, garnered 46,437 views and some 1,500 comments on the popular video-sharing website.

Mr. Giuliani, speaking to about 200 supporters in Tampa, stressed his leadership qualities and unveiled his new slogan: “Tested. Ready. Now.” His campaign had billed it as the former prosecutor’s “closing argument” for the Republican presidential nomination. The jury appears unconvinced, however. As of Monday, a clip of the speech had been viewed only 1,106 times and it drew no comments.

To me, it is very ironic, that Mike Huckabee’s shameless playing of the religion card, which had the effect of re-introducing an issue that many felt had been taken out of American presidential politics by John F. Kennedy’s speech in Houston, Texas back in 1960, has produced one of the best moments of the campaign thus far and has generated the “buzz” that all politicians hope for, but few attain. It is also ironic that the Romney campaign was at first reluctant to give the speech, understandably and justifiably so. Gov. Romney has run his campaign on the theme of the “three legged stool” of a strong economy, a strong military and strong families. He did not intend to run a campaign based on religion or he would have incorporated it into the original theme.

However, former Gov. Huckabee had a different idea and chose to emphasize religion as a major plank in his platform. I wonder if Mr. Huckabee is having any second thoughts about opening the door on an issue that has now turned into a major gift in disguise.
