Food for thought on Mitt’s “flip-flopping”

If Mitt is such an unprincipled flip-flopper, why didn’t he take a completely different approach to his candidacy?

For example he could have disavowed his Mormon faith (or at least play it down). It would have been the easiest thing in the world for him to take a Rudy Giuliani-esque approach saying that he has learned a lot from it, he is “informed” by it, but that he is “not directed” by it. He could have done this with a wink and nod with the LDS community which I think many would have understood given that they often spend much of their lives playing down their religion in the public square (speculation on my part based on conversations I have had with LDS friends as I am not LDS myself).

Or, how about take another page from the Rudy Giuliani playbook on the Life issue? He could have skipped all of the explanations about how he had been wrong and changed his perspective. This would have implied a completely different campaign strategy, of course. It would have been more of a competence/CEO/social moderate approach, but a reasonable person could have decided to take such an approach.

The ramifications of not taking this kind of approach had to be plain to anybody thinking about it. He must have known that he would have been clubbed with the “flip flopper” theme at every opportunity.

What could possibly explain why Mitt wouldn’t have taken an approach that downplayed these issues and the potential for such an onslaught of attacks on his integrity?

Could it possibly be that he actually holds his faith strongly?

Could it possibly be that he actually believes that life begins at conception, that 1.4 million abortions in the U.S. per year is an outrage, and that cloning embryos for the express purpose of harvesting them is an ethical quagmire?

How could anyone stand the scrutiny, skepticism, and scorn that has been heaped on Governor Romney over these issues without the courage of their convictions? (Giuliani couldn’t handle it…he completely dropped any pretense of being Pro-Life within a week after the first debate).

So, maybe Mitt Romney is a diabolical, power-hungry, reincarnation of Machiavelli who is willing to do anything and say anything to advance his personal agenda. (Keep in mind that nothing in his past professional nor personal life suggests any such thing…take a look at this insider’s view of how he managed Bain Capital to see what he was like)

Or, maybe he just really believes what he says. Thoughts?

The Flyer Every Romney Supporter Should See

November 14th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Competitors, Image, Immigration

I’m sure there are loads of new Romney supporters coming into the fold daily.

This 1994 campaign flyer from when Romney took on Teddy Kennedey is “required reading” for every Romney supporter. They say a picture is worth a thousand words . . . this one’s worth quite a few more.

Put it in your “Favorites/Bookmarks” and feel free to link to it at message boards when you run into the frequent “Mitt used to be a liberal” or “Mitt’s flip-flopped on every major issue” comments from the opposing forces.

Editorial Insert: I have included the aforementioned flyer on our About Mitt Romney page here at Elect Romney in 2008 (aka comMITTed to Romney).

Gotta love the classic Mitt Romney humor

Romney, Deftly Avoiding a John Edwards-Style Hair Controversy

Laura Ingraham, friend of NRO, is MCing tomorrow’s Ames Straw poll and has been interviewing the participants this morning.

I’m paraphrasing the following exchange with Mitt Romney from a few minutes ago:

Laura: I want to see you get angry more, I thought you handled that radio host in Iowa who was trying to tell you he knew more about your religion than you did - I thought you handled that great.

Romney: Heh. Well, I’m not a very angry guy, but I’m no shrinking violet, either, and when someone goes after my family or my religion or says that I’m not a faithful member of my church, I’m going to let him have it.

Laura: I think I want to see you come out for tomorrow’s straw poll in a black leather jacket. White t-shirt, a pack of cigarettes rolled up in your sleeve. Or could you, you know, mess up your hair a little?

Romney: Nobody alters my hair, Laura. But maybe I’ll unbutton the top button.

Mitt Romney at Face Value

July 15th, 2007 | 3 Comments | Posted in Humor, Image, Mitt Romney

I found this piece to be humorous, not just because of how the writing hit me but because of something my good friend Kevin Anderson told me late last year. He and I have engaged in in-depth and often times “devil advocating” political debates since the Jimmy Carter days —– are we getting old or what?

Anyway, we were exploring all these angles of this guy we were hearing about who wanted to run for President: Mitt Romney. Kevin said something that hit a slight nerve with me but also seemed implausible. He said that he thought, aside from his strong policies and obvious extraordinary leadership experience, Mitt Romney would have great appeal to women voters since most women think he is handsome. The immediate twinge that hit me was because I felt that people would not make such an important decision for President based mostly on appearance; something that has no relevance whatsoever. In our normal bantering way, I dismissed his musings as nothing more.

Since then, I have concluded Kevin is probably right.

Since that first discussion in late 2006, I have seen several articles that touch on GMR’s “Reaganesque Looks”, “Chisseled Jaw”, etc….. Many times these articles seem intent on diminishing GMR to nothing more than a “pretty face”, somehow empty of any real substance. But the reality I believe now is very close to Kevin’s original hunch, something I reluctantly admitted to him Friday over lunch. Consider this from The Dallas Morning News:

It’s usually women who complain about being judged on appearance instead of accomplishments, but pity poor Mitt Romney, a man who apparently suffers from looking too good. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews said Mr. Romney “has the perfect chin, the perfect hair.” The cover of Time magazine said: “Sure, he looks like a president.” And on 60 Minutes, Mike Wallace kidded him for being “Matinee Mitt.”
—–
Research on facial stereotyping suggests, for instance, that – kidding from envious journalists aside – Mr. Romney stands a better chance in the GOP presidential primaries because he has the look of a mature leader, with that high forehead towering over deep-set eyes and a strong (OK, perfect) chin. And John Edwards may be at a disadvantage among Democrats because those chubby cheeks make him look just a little too boyishly winsome.

So if we believe the contents of this article, what does it portend for Fred Thompson?

This entire article is great. In addition to humorous, I found the article very interesting as a whole. Click here to read it:

Taking candidates at face value —– You’re probably discriminating on looks, even if you don’t realize it, says RICHARD CONNIFF

Arianna Huffington: Romney is dangerous for Democrats

Over the last few weeks I have been astounded by the personal attacks that McCain has spewed at Romney over immigration. One naturally concludes that when McCain knows that he is weak, wrong, and vulnerable, the only option is to lash out to try and damage his opponent in any way possible.

This same thing is happening on a much larger scale in the mainstream media. We have all seen them lash out it many ways at Romney, and what is at the heart of it? They realize that more than any other Repulican candidate, the Democrats are vulnerable in a general election when put up against Romney. Very rarely will you get them to admit it, and even on rarer occasion will they further opine as to why they are scared. In a seemingly off-the-cuff type of comment, Arriana Huffington lets you in on some of the fear that drives the mainstream media’s constant attacks on Romney.

So…I want all of your thoughts. For what specific reasons are the Democrats scared to put their candidate, especially Hillary, up against Romney in the general election?

Mitt is what confidence looks like

May 22nd, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in 2008, Character, Image, John McCain

MSNBC describes Mitt’s confident and classy response to McCain’s continuing attacks.

“I guess it just shows that, even when he’s wrong, he’s amusing,” Romney replied.

Mitt points out policy flaws in his opponents, but never gets personal. Yet another reason we need him to be the next POTUS. He will bring a level of civility and respect to the dialog in Washington sorely missing today.

First Metrosexual President?

May 15th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in 2008, Image, Media, The Mormon Issue

Rich Lowry, Editor of National Review has written a number of positive articles about Mitt. In this one, he takes the media to task and explains why their usual enthusiasm for diversity and Presidential “firsts” (e.g. first woman, first black) is conspicuously lacking when it comes to the first Mormon. It’s a quick read, and well worth it.

He also makes a funny comment about the “Mitt’s too perfect” objection that seems to be popular with the media:

He is so unlike George W. Bush in his articulate, well-groomed polish that he probably should be hailed as the first-ever metrosexual candidate for president. Indeed, rather than recoiling at his Mormonism, Republican primary voters may conclude that the handsome, “golly”-exclaiming, (newly) down-the-line conservative is simply too good to be true.

That wouldn’t necessarily be a “first,” but it would certainly be a fairer way to judge Romney than on his religious faith.

Slow news day in Boston forces The Globe to focus on Romney’s hair…

March 23rd, 2007 | 6 Comments | Posted in Hair, Humor, Image, Slow News Day

In the race for who has the least Gray hair…apparently Governor Romney has won. According to the following piece courtesy of The Boston Globe…! This is about as exciting as the day that we found out that Bill Clinton wore boxers…! READ ALL ABOUT IT! ;)

Romney’s black hair natural, not dyed

March 23, 2007

MILWAUKEE, Wis. –Don’t expect Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to endorse hair dye products anytime soon.

The former governor of Massachusetts laid to rest on Friday any rumors that he dyes his hair black. His sleek dark coif, with just a hint of gray on his sideburns, is completely natural, he told reporters following a fundraiser in Milwaukee.

“I don’t dye it. I don’t color it and you can take a real close camera shot and see there’s a lot of gray mixed in with all that black,” said a laughing Romney.

Earlier this month Romney turned 60, an age when many men are forced to decide between coloring their hair or living gray.

Though Romney hasn’t had to think about that just yet — or so he says — his campaign advisers worry that his hair is too perfect, according to an internal campaign document that recently surfaced in the media.

Romney is trailing in polls behind two older, hair-challenged candidates — former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, who is mostly bald, and Sen. John McCain of Arizona, whose hair is white.

Meanwhile, the Michigan Republican Party announced Friday that the three candidates agreed to speak at the party’s biennial Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference to be held Sept. 21-23 at the historic Grand Hotel. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has said he will wait until this fall before deciding if he’ll run, also will address the conference.

The conference, held in odd-numbered years, usually draws about 3,000 Republican activists, guests, journalists and political pundits to the island situated in the Straits of Mackinac between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas.
