Rallying To Romney

A large, enthusiastic crowd gathered on extremely short notice for a last minute Long Beach, California stop for Romney tonight.  I talked to the get-out-the-vote staffer who was heading back to Sacramento and the headquarters even as Romney took off for West Virginia and that state’s Super Tuesday convention.  The Romney team is wired, the sort of energy that can be faked but only flows from conviction that the political wind is at your back.  Similar reprots are arriving from Colorado and Georgia. Romney clearly has momentum in California, and a win here will send the campaign into a month of head-to-head contests culminating in Ohio and Texas in early March.  Expect Romney to challenge McCain to a series of one-on-one debates that McCain really cannot accept, underscoring the weakness of the McCain campaign if it has to match up against Obama.  Not only would McCain be overwhelmed by the volcano of money exploding for Obama, he can’t match the Illinois senator on the small screen.  The recognition of the mismatch looming is adding fuel to the Romney rally. Romney by contrast has enormous energy and an appeal built on the future, not the past.  He can easily raise the money necessary to contest the next eight months until public financing takes over on 9/1, and he would easily best Obama in one-on-ones on television. Romney has reassembled the Reagan coalition and may have done so just in time to save the GOP from lapsing into its pre-Reagan days.  If the Huck vote continues to dwindle at the rate it has been fading over the past ten days, tomorrow could have many surprises.  Romney thanked Rush, Sean, Laura, Mark Levin, Lars Larson and others among the conservative punditry for leading the rally.  If he can keep it close tomorrow, the shift to him will accelerate as the GOP decides to contest 2008 on the basis of free markets, free minds, traditional values, and victory in the war –in short, on a 2008 edition of the 1980 platform.

In the meantime, great news coming from battleground California. According to Reuters/CSPAN/Zogby, Gov. Romney is leading California over “Open Borders” McCain 37% to 34%. Below are a couple of quotes from the article.

If the swing towards Romney in California continues, he will emerge from Tuesday’s contest in a solid second place with a new narrative and a renewed debate about the race –can Romney surpass McCain in Ohio and Texas in March? The rapidly fading Huck would simply disappear, as he is doing in many places where the obvious has already registered: A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain.

As the Arizona numbers underscore, McCain would not even bring a marginally united party with him. Given his animosity towards Romney, McCain wouldn’t add Romney to the ticket ,and the die-hard opponents of McCain will spend the next nine months hammering on how Huckabee blocked the consolidation of the conservative vote thus allowing the Reagan coalition to be eclipsed. Many would get over it and pull the lever for McCain, but how many would work for him or contribute to his coffers? And how many irreconcilables does it take to doom the campaign from the start –5%? 10% Not many, especially when it comes to the purple states of Colorado and Ohio.

It Took Two Weeks In The Spring Of 2007 To Defeat McCain-Kennedy. It May Take Less In The Winter 2008 To Defeat Just McCain

…But once the conservative voice begins speaking as one or nearly one, it is very effective, and that began to emerge on Thursday after the Reagan Library debate.

When Rush declared on Thursday that a “vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain,” the focus became very, very clear for conservative voters –who heard it. 

That message has been repeated a few times by others from Laura Ingraham to Mark Levin and most of us in between, as well as by folks like Rick Santorum and Denny Hastert.  Messages take a while to get delivered, but they eventually get there.  McCain is using endorsements from the political elites like Arnold and Rick Perry to blunt the new media, and MSM is pushing back with an “inevitability” narrative that is nonsense even as realistic assessments give McCain a great advantage going forward. 

But the picture is very clear and voters see it:  McCain or Romney.  Huck doesn’t have a shot, an thus a vote for him is a vote for McCain.

Romney doesn’t even have to spend much more money to communicate this or the crucial differences between him and McCain on taxes, the First Amendment, judges, climate change, and especially illegal immigration.  He now has the new media on board and amplifying his message.  If there is movement towards Romney on Tuesday, he has many incentives to stay on through St. Paul, and especially through Ohio and Texas in early March.  He gets more earned media every day from here on than any candidate has enjoyed on the GOP side since the campaign began.  That’s a huge force multiplier and it is just coming to bear on the race.

…But the reality is that “Rally to Romney” is the dominant story in the conservative new media.  The results won’t be clear until Wednesday morning, though polls like this Rasmussen in Missouri and Rasmussen in Tennesssee which show McCain with a narrow and falling lead of only 3 points underscore how volatile the race is.  A Romney win in either of these states certainly propels the campaign forward to Texas and Ohio at least.  (This Tennessee poll has Romney ahead.)  Four days is a very long time in 2008.

A Huckabee voter on Tuesday could have a lot of reasons for sticking with Mike, but one of them cannot be protecting the legacy of Reagan or the platform of the GOP as it has existed since 1980. 

The choice is very clear, and Republicans have a long weekend to think it over.

I don’t mean to imply any disrespect to anyone posting early poll results, I can’t deny they are fun, but…….the only poll that counts is still in progress and they call this poll “a primary election”.

If you are a registered voter in Florida and you support the candidacy of Mitt Romney, get to the polls and vote: NO MATTER WHAT THE POLLS SAY!!!

It doesn’t matter if they say Mitt is up by 40% points are if he is down by 40% points. I see stories alleging the activity of Independents being allowed to vote. I have no clue if the stories are accurate or not. I do know this. There are certain elements in our society who don’t respect one of the most awesome documents on the face of the earth, an American ballot.

Don’t let anything the media says tonight discourage you from voting. After you have voted for Mitt Romney, there will be plenty of time this evening to follow the election returns. You will be able to say to yourself; “I did my duty and now the rest is up to the voters of Florida.”

Remember the title to Hugh Hewitt’s book: “If It’s Not Close, They Can’t Cheat.”

…the Republican should have demonstrated success in executive management in both private and public sectors. This eliminates everyone except Romney and Rudy. John McCain wants to make the case that his experience as squadron leader qualifies, and it does demonstrate leadership, but not executive experience. Both Rudy and Romney have led entire organizations in both the public and private sectors, with Romney getting the best in this area. They have had the buck stop at their desk. Both Rudy and Romney have transformed failing entities (New York City and the Salt Lake City Olympics). McCain led 400 men, but he answered to commanders above him at several levels while doing so, and I have yet to see an argument for transformation under McCain’s leadership.

Why is this important? The Democrats have no one who can match that experience. Putting McCain or especially Fred Thompson against the Democratic nominee, whether that is Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, effectively cedes the inexperience argument. It argues that Republicans consider resumes to be irrelevant, and that will have us fighting with one hand tied behind our backs.

Third, we face a tough election if the economy turns south, even mildly. We saw this in 1992 and lost when Bill Clinton successfully convinced people that he had the best ideas for a turnaround. We have one candidate who has undeniable success in the global markets, who understands them and the players that run them. Romney gives us an advantage as the nominee that none of the others can match in this regard.

The following excerpts of the transcripts from the Hugh Hewitt show were taken from here. Hugh Hewitt interviewed Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House.

Several people in this blog have asked about who Governor Romney should choose for Vice President, should he be the Republican nominee. I have said many times that very few first term Presidents in the last 75 years did not include either the Prez or VP from a southern state (maybe one).    Gingrich is definitely very bright and though he has baggage, his conservative credentials are outstanding. Here is his answer as to whether he would consider the Veep job:

HH: Mr. Speaker, a lot of people would love to see you in the number two slot on the ticket. Are you open to that?

NG: Well, Ronald Reagan once said that he was hoping that Gerald Ford would not ask him in 1976, because a citizen would have a very hard time turning it down as part of their duty. And I always thought that was a wise admonition. And so I can’t quite imagine a nominee foolish enough to offer it, but I would have to consider it seriously if somebody did.

And what is Gingrich’s opinion about Governor Romney, Mayor Giuliani, and John McCain? Their chances?

NG: John McCain is John McCain. He’s a very stubborn, very self-righteous, very indignant guy who really believes what he believes, and frankly, if you don’t like him, that’s your problem. And yet he’s also courageous and hard working and has great integrity, and is a true patriot. And so, he’s…and it really helped him in New Hampshire, because that was exactly the kind of cantankerous personality that kind of fits the New Hampshire tradition.

HH: But you know, Mr. Speaker, in your book, Real Change, one of the things that really resonated with me on Page 89, you call for cheerful persistence for change. And you cite FDR. And you know, that’s so crucial to governing, and I don’t think Senator McCain has any cheerful persistence for change in him, does he?

NG: I didn’t…listen, you asked me what I would advise each of those three guys, and I told you what I’d advise them. Look, I’m not defending any of the three. Each of them has great strengths, each of them has great weaknesses. That’s why no one has broken loose yet. And Florida become really important in part because either McCain or Giuliani has to win Florida to keep the nomination open. If Romney wins Florida, I think he’s on the way to becoming the nominee.

So, Florida. What do you think about Florida? Is Governor Romney going to win Florida? Those are big delegates down there! Remember this: No Republican has been elected President without winning Florida.

I know Ann Marie has a previous post on Mr. Monaghan’s endorsement of Mitt Romney, but I thought what Hugh Hewitt had to say was so important that it bore repeating.

One of the most important points Mr. Hewitt makes is that conservatives are not going to surrender their party without a fight. Their have been numerous calls for Mitt Romney to withdraw from the race. Interesting advise to the candidate who is leading in the delegate count!

I have some unsolicited advise for the ink-stained wretches who are calling for us to hand over the GOP to them on a silver platter……we will see you at the polls in November!

Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan endorsed Mitt Romney today. As one of Michigan’s highest profile business successes this would be news in itself, but it is far more important than just another keen observer of the economy recognizing Romney’s qualifications to serve as president.

Monaghan is a Catholic’s Catholic, the founder of Ave Maria University and Law School, and one of the forces behind Legatus, an organization of senior Catholic business leaders. He is an ardent pro-lifer, and a man deeply concerned with rescuing the culture.

Monaghan’s decision to announce today is a clear signal to social conservatives that it is time to chose and get in the game, first in Michigan and then South Carolina, Nevada and Florida in an effort to save the GOP from capture by the anti-conservative John McCain and the neopopulist Mike Huckabee.

Many leaders of the value voters have stayed on the sidelines, buffeted by conflicting pressures and a sometimes noisy anti-Mormon fringe. They may stay there, but if they do and the presidency is lost and with it the Surpreme Court, their inactivity in January 2008 will be a heavy burden to bear. Monaghan apparently knows this and is leading the way that social conservatives should follow.

There is no way Romney should retire from this race before Super Tuesday no matter how many Beltway-Manhattan pundits want him out. The conservatives are not going to surrender their party, and they want a chance to say so at the ballot box. As the upheaval on the Democratic side showed yesterday, there are many surprises in store for pollsters and pundits in the new media age of politics. By February 5, a thoroughly disgusted core of Republican activists from the center-right will be mobilized across the country to keep their party on the path established by the Reagan-Bush coalitions.

Anybody nervous out there? I am.

I really want Governor Romney, his team, and all his amazing, dedicated volunteers to experience a win in New Hampshire today. So for all of them, all of you, and for me — I am nervous.

I am feeling good vibes. Any of you remember the film Kelly’s Heroes when Sutherland is standing with his body out of a tank, going through that tunnel yelling, “No negative vibes! Only positive vibes!” ? All right, I just dated myself.

I was in the process of getting caught up on the site, after spending the week in Iowa, when I came across this excellent comment from one of our readers.

Boy are you optimistic. I still see Romney getting the nomination, but through a more complicated route. Huck will squeeze past Romney in Iowa, and McCain will take New Hampshire, because both are so full of momentum right now, united against Romney, and getting a free pass from the MSM. Then Romney will take Michigan, his home state, because he will still be strong coming in 2nd in the first two states. Then it will come down to Huck vs. Romney in South Carolina. By this time, Huckabee has been stopped by the conservative press (Will, Limbaugh, Ingraham, Hannity, Coulter, Hewitt, etc.), who have all joined forces, for the sake of the party, to kill a Huckabee nomination. (They would have done it earlier, but they were all on Christmas break) Romney will then squeeze past Huck in South Carolina, due to Huck’s bad press. McCain will have since been out of contention, because he was only viable in NewHampshire anyway. That leaves only Giuliani and Romney to fight it out for Florida. I can’t predict that, but I think it will be a Romney/Giuliani race from then on, with Romney the victor, due to momentum, and the republican establishment on his side.

One of the things I have observed over the last year at this site is the reasoned analysis that goes on here, from both contributors and readers. We don’t have screaming contests with each other, there isn’t any of the sophomoric arguments that go on at other sites and, with the exception of the occasional “wing nut eruption”, our readers post comments that have real value in the ongoing process of selecting the next President. Thats why I posted Linda’s excellent analysis above. Kudos to Linda on a fine job!

…but John Bolton denies it.

I’ve lost count of the number of gaffe’s Huckabee has had in the last couple days, but add another one to the mix. Some choice bits:

In recent days, Mike Huckabee has tried to answer long-standing questions about who is on his foreign policy team. On Friday morning, he listed former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton as someone with whom he either has “spoken or will continue to speak.”

At a Thursday evening press conference, Huckabee said, “I’ve corresponded with John Bolton, who’s agreed to work with us on developing foreign policy.”

Bolton, however, has a different view. “I’d be happy to speak with Huckabee, but I haven’t spoken with him yet,” said Bolton, now a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington.

Okay, if that weren’t bad enough, it gets worse:

WOLF BLITZER: “Let’s go back out to the campaign trail right now. Presidential candidate appears to be trying to change the subject after making what some are calling a notable gaffe. That would be republican Mike Huckabee. He’s a former governor with less foreign policy experience than some of his rivals. Now some are wondering if that is becoming obvious out on the campaign trail. Let’s go out to Iowa, Dana Bash is watching all of this unfold. You’ve learned about the concerns inside Huckabee’s own camp about his national security experience. Explain to our viewers what’s going on.”

DANA BASH: “Well, Wolf, in a very candid moment today, a senior Huckabee campaign official told me that with their candidate, quote, ‘There is no foreign policy credential.’ And that unlike many other presidential candidates, he can’t boast about knowing Benazir Bhutto. This official also said that until they can, quote, ‘get him briefed’ and up to speed on Pakistan, they’re going to try to bring it closer to home. Mike Huckabee is responding to crisis in Pakistan in an offbeat way, tying it to a red hot campaign issue: immigration.”

GOVERNOR MIKE HUCKABEE: “There were more Pakistanis who illegally crossed the border than of any other nationality except for those immediately south of our border. 660 last year. That’s a lot of illegals from Pakistan.” (Me: by the way, that’s wrong, far more illegal immigrants come from the Philippines, Korea, China and Vietnam according to the Dept. of Homeland Security)

BASH: “Sounding an alarm about illegal Pakistanis in America is a surprising tactic for a candidate who preaches tolerance. He dismissed any concern it looks like xenophobia.”

HUCKABEE: “No none. Not at all. I’m just saying that a lot of Americans sitting in Pella, Iowa maybe look halfway around the world and say how does that affect me?”

BASH: “When asked by CNN for the source of his statistic, 660 illegal Pakistanis, Huckabee seemed unsure.”

BASH: “A senior Huckabee campaign official admitted to CNN the former Arkansas governor has, quote, ‘no foreign policy credential.’ that’s why his campaign turned to immigration, a top concern for Iowa GOP voters especially men he’s been losing ground with. The pivot followed a gaffe, not appearing to know martial law was lifted in Pakistan two weeks ago.”

This is getting embarrassing. Huckabee evidently just makes stuff up and hopes that nobody calls him on it. This might have worked in Arkansas, but he isn’t in Little Rock anymore. (no disrespect intended to Arkansasans)
