Romney breaks with GOP on the issue of deregulation

April 2nd, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in 2012 Election, GOP, Mitt Romney

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) said Wednesday that his party needs to take a fresh approach to government regulations in the wake of the economic crisis that has rattled the U.S. and world economies.

In an interview with The Hill, Romney said, “We as Republicans misspeak when we say we don’t like regulation. We like modern, up-to-date dynamic regulation that is regularly reviewed, streamlined, modernized and effective.”

Romney’s comments come as he mulls another run at the White House and the Republican Party grapples with how to come up with producing solutions to the housing and financial crises that were triggered by a variety of factors, including a lack of government regulation and enforcement.

In Conservatives’ Straw Poll, Romney Still Tops

The NYT reports today that Mitt Romney won the CPAC straw poll with 30% of the vote, instead of the 20% that I have seen reported as of Saturday evening.

Whatever the accurate percentage is, it’s clear that Gov. Romney is the early favorite of those party members who are among the most committed to conservative principles, those who take the time and make the effort to travel to Washington to take part in the conference.

I have followed CPAC for three years now and last night’s performance by Rush Limbaugh was off the charts. To speak for over an hour, without the aid of a teleprompter, only the occasional reference to a set of notes, was very impressive. I didn’t even try to keep track of the number of standing ovations that Rush got, the crowd was constantly rising to it’s feet. What a thrill for those in attendance. I know they’ll be back in their communities this weekend with many stories to tell and fired up about the prospects the party now enjoys to make significant gains in both Houses of Congress in 2010.

If you haven’t already done so, please join a local Republican club or committee and become part of a growing cadre of grassroots political activists whose goal is to move away from the big government, big spending, big promises and small results of the current administration.

The New York Times

By Michael Falcone

Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts emerged as the top potential Republican presidential nominee in a straw poll of conservative political activists who gathered in Washington this week.

Mr. Romney won the support of 30 percent of those who took the poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana trailed in second place with 14 percent, followed by Representative Ron Paul of Texas and Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, who both received 13 percent of the vote. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich rounded out the top five. Organizers said it was the third time that Mr. Romney had won the poll.

He rallied the conservative audience in a speech on Friday in which he urged them not to “dwell on the battles we’ve lost,” but rather, “get ready for the battles we’re going to win.”

But the nonscientific poll, which was based on the responses of 1,757 attendees, suggested that conservatives may be keeping an open mind about the 2012 election. While 55 percent of conferencegoers said they were generally satisfied with the field of candidates whose names have been floated as possible contenders, 44 percent said they wished the Republican Party had better choices. Key GOP Governors Back Stimulus

I am shocked, shocked, I tell you!! Ahhnoold is backing the “stimulus” bill?? Of course he is. When you are the RINO head of the freest spending state in the Union and have a $40 billion plus deficit to finance, you are going to be out on the street corner at noon, shaking the tin cup. Disgraceful.

President Obama plans Tuesday to release a letter from 19 governors, including several Republican governors from large states, supporting the $1.17 trillion stimulus bill now making its way through Congress. The letter is part of an ongoing strategy to put pressure on GOP senators opposed to the deal.

Only four of the 19 governors are Republicans, but their states represent 92 votes in the Electoral College. GOP governors supporting the plan are: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California; Gov. Jody M. Rell of Connecticut; Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida; and Gov. James H. Douglas of Vermont.

McCain seeks to calm angry supporters

Here’s a very basic political question for you. Does John McCain know what the hell he’s doing?

Judging from the reaction he is getting from his own supporters, I’d say the answer is no.

We are witnessing the closing weeks of an epic presidential campaign that has seen history made on several fronts. Mitt Romney, the only LDS candidate to run a nationwide campaign for President. My apologies to any other LDS candidate that may have had a presidential campaign, I am just not aware of any others that ran a major national campaign.

Hillary Clinton, the first woman to run a major national campaign for the Presidency. Barack Obama, the first African-American to run for the presidency. Sarah Palin, the first woman to be picked to run as VP for the Republican Party. John McCain the first former POW to run for the presidency.

As much as I admire Sen. McCain for his service to his country, I have to say that I am mystified by his campaign strategy. Writing off Michigan, a swing state with 17 electoral votes. A state that might have been winnable with the right message. A message of how the American auto industry would finally get a level playing field with some of it’s competitors by having a candidate that promoted cutting the federal corporate tax rate, instead of dampening the enthusiasm of his crowds by lecturing them on a bogus civility. I am not advocating running a dirty campaign, but as that old political saying goes: “Politics ain’t beanbag.”

Sen. McCain has found himself in the unenviable position of being booed by his own crowds. I can fully sympathize with that crowd in Minnesota the other day that wanted him to bring the fight to Obama on his association with radical Bill Ayers. Why on earth the McCain campaign let this slide until less than three weeks remaining in the campaign remains a puzzlement to me. Bringing it up now smacks of desperation, not quite the message you want to send to the troops in the field. But if you are not going to hammer Obama on his job-killing tax proposals, dangerous foreign policy proposals and his general affection for leftist solutions to whatever ails the country at any given point in time, at least the Ayers connection is something conservative crowds can relate to.

The reason McCain is so out of touch with conservative crowds is because he is not a conservative. This won’t come as a surprise to most of you, but for those newcomers to politics, they may not have been engaged in the process long enough to remember President Reagan and for the college aged readers of this site, they weren’t even born during his administration. If all they remember is the last of the Clinton administration and Bushes’ two terms, they might not be expected to know a true conservative if they bumped into one in the hallway. So, if anyone is tempted to believe the MSM spin that McCain represents the center-right of the Republican Party, don’t buy it. He is getting booed in the Heartland because we see ourselves going down to defeat, while he preaches on the need to play nice with Obama.

As you may know, I have thrown in the towel on this Presidential election. If my state permits it, I will write in Mitt Romney for president. During the course of my involvement in this election, I have become aware of several candidates that I consider true conservatives, people that I can help promote in the future. People like Sarah Steelman and Dr. Bob Onder here in Missouri. Jason Chaffetz in Utah, Jeff Beatty in Massachusetts and William Russell in Pennsylvania. So, although the outcome of this election looks grim at the moment, a last minute reversal is always possible. So whether we win or lose, the commitment to Gov. Romney, the Free and Strong America PAC and other fine conservative candidates is ongoing.

Let’s all stay engaged in the process because, to quote Pat Buchanan, “You can’t legally, have more fun than a Presidential election!”

by Mosheh Oinounou

LAKEVILLE, MN —

It was a surreal scene during John McCain’s town hall meeting Friday as the GOP nominee was forced at times to defend Barack Obama as he urged thousands of supporters to cool their increasingly vitriolic anti-Obama rhetoric.

McCain sought to calm his raucous audience by lightening his criticism of Obama at times and repeatedly pleading with the crowd to be “respectful” of the Democratic nominee only to be repeatedly booed today. Supporters at recent rallies have shouted out that Obama is a terrorist, traitor and criminal, among other choice words.

“We want to fight, and I will fight but we will be respectful. I admire Senator Obama and his accomplishments. I will respect him,” McCain said to a chorus of boos as he tried to answer a supporter who urged him to engage in a “real fight.”

“I want everyone to be respectful and lets make sure we are because that’s the way politics should be conducted…now I don’t mean that has to reduce your ferocity. I just mean its got to be respectful. OK,” he said.

But for the second day in a row, a McCain town hall meeting felt more like an intervention as staunch supporters repeatedly pleaded with the GOP nominee to attack Obama using his associations with people like Bill Ayers or risk losing in November.

“My wife and I are expecting (a child)…and frankly, we’re scared. We’re scared of an Obama presidency,” one man told McCain asserting that Obama also “cohorts with domestic terrorists.”
“I want to be President of the United States and obviously I do not want Senator Obama to be, but I have to tell you…he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States,” McCain said to additional boos from the crowd. He tried to assuage them by adding, ” if I didn’t think I wouldn’t be one heck of a lot better president I wouldn’t be running,” but received only a smattering of applause.

“Saying the facts about him, and the truth, that needs to come out,” another supporter urged McCain, as yet one other called on him to go to “the mattresses” with Obama at next Wednesday’s debate.

It didn’t stop there. McCain had to literally grab the microphone from one female supporter while she was still asking her question after she called Obama an “Arab.”

“No ma’am. No ma’am. He is a decent family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that is what this campaign is all about. He is not,” McCain repeated shaking his head.

The new message comes after days of multiple TV and web ads and campaign conference calls attacking Obama’s associations with Bill Ayers, ACORN, Tony Rezko and casting him as an unknown entity who has been dishonest with the American people. Last Saturday, Sarah Palin kicked off the more aggressive message by stating that he “pals around with terrorists” and it escalated with McCain saying Monday that America does not know “the real Barack Obama.”

Though at other times, McCain reluctantly succumbed to the pressure and attacked Obama’s Ayers connection and liberal voting record as farther to the left than socialist Bernie Sanders.

“In order to win this election…you have to talk a little bit, and bring to the attention of the voters, the press is not going to do it for you…some of the associations that have really marred Obama’s life,” former US Senator Rudy Boschwitz recommended during the event.

Noting that he doesn’t care about Ayers or his wife, whom he described as an “old, washed-up terrorists,” McCain said that the bigger issue is that Obama is not being forthright about his relationship with the 60’s radical.

“What we do care about is people telling the truth about their associations with these individuals. That’s what the question is about…Sen. Obama said that Mr. Ayers was a guy in the neighborhood, when in reality, Sen. Obama’s political career was launched in Mr. Ayers living room,” he said to cheers.

But when lobbed a softball question by another town hall attendee to talk about ACORN improprieties McCain punted on drawing the connection between the community organizing group and Obama–a relationship the campaign had been pushing aggressively all day.

While he called for a “a full and complete and thorough investigation” of allegations of voter registration fraud against the group and left it at that.

Chaffetz Says Demos to Blame for Energy Crisis

Jason Chaffetz just returned from a week long fact finding trip to the ANWR (Alaska National Wildlife Refuge) region of Alaska’s North Slope. In the article he blames the energy crisis on the Democrats. On this point I don’t agree with Jason. IMHO, Democrats bear the major part of the blame, but some Republicans have been part of the problem as well. Their has been no monopoly of vice or virtue in either party.

It sure looks like the logjam on domestic drilling is starting to break apart. It has been exciting to see the level of public debate rise to the heights we have all witnessed with just the past month. Hopefully, this debate marks the end of a long held national policy of no drilling, no new ideas and no solutions.

~~John Cronin~~

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,700244044,00.html

By Arthur Raymond
Deseret News

After visiting Alaska’s oil reserves this week, Utah Republican congressional candidate Jason Chaffetz said Democratic inaction has landed the country in its current energy dilemma.
Chaffetz spent most of this week in Alaska to become familiar with a domestic resource that Democrats have historically refused to tap — oil reserves in the federally protected Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Reached by phone Thursday in Anchorage, Alaska, Chaffetz identified what he sees as the cause, and solution, to escalating energy prices.

“There’s no doubt that Democrats are the problem. We’ve done what they’ve suggested, and look at the results — since (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi took over, gas prices have doubled,” Chaffetz said. “Energy is our most pressing need — and ANWR appears to be part of the solution.”

Chaffetz, along with six other Republican congressional candidates — none of them incumbents — toured the wildlife refuge and met with Alaskans in Kaktovik, Prudhoe Bay and Point Barrow. He said utilizing the resources in ANWR is just a part of a bigger plan necessary to bring new, and more affordable, energy on-line.

“We have to explore every facet of development that’s available — wind, solar, hydro, nuclear — we have to move forward on all fronts,” Chaffetz said.

Here’s a look at one of the commenter’s on the site had to say about Chaffetz’ trip to ANWR.

Amen! | 7:48 a.m. July 18, 2008
Chaffetz is right on. ANWR is a barren wasteland. The caribou heards that were supposed to have died out once the pipeline was built have actually increased. All the doomsday prophecies turned out to be false. There’s no reason not to drill in ANWR.

If people see the potential for additional supply on the market, the futures market won’t look quite so appealing and the speculators won’t be as successful at driving up the price of oil.

If Bennion Spencer is willing to let environmentalists push us around, he’ll never get my vote. I believe in conservation and I live it. But I reject the notion that extracting energy resources will destroy life as we know it.

I couldn’t agree more with Chaffetz that global warming is a farce. Climate change is no farce. But I reject the idea that man can control the planet’s climate cycles. I don’t care how many billions of dollars we spend, we can’t control Mother Nature. I DO NOT want to elect someone who wants to flush our economy down the toilet in a futile attempt to control the planet’s climate.

Onder Campaign Gains Endorsements of Pro-Life, Pro-Family Organizations

This just in from the Onder for Congress Campaign for the 9th Congressional District of Missouri.

~~John Cronin~~

Dr. Bob Onder today announced five new exclusive endorsements from pro-life, pro-family conservatives in his race for Congress.

Onder has recently received glowing endorsements from pro-life and conservative organizations and leaders from Missouri and across the country. He is the only candidate to receive the endorsements of:

Concerned Women for America
National Eagle Forum
Missourians United for Life
Missouri Republican Assembly
Republicans National Coalition for Life
Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon, Congressional Pro-Life Leader
Congressman Chris Smith, Chairman, Congressional Pro-Life Caucus

“It is a great honor to be the only candidate endorsed by these pro-life groups,” said Dr. Onder. “When I get to Washington, I’ll do more than merely push the right buttons on votes, I’ll lead the charge to defend the right to life and mainstream Missouri values.”

Concerned Women for America is just the latest group to endorse Dr. Onder. CWPAC is the nation’s largest women’s public policy organization with more than half a million members nationwide.

“Dr. Onder was already well known to CWPAC long before he decided to run for Congress. As a state Representative, Bob has not only been a solid vote on pro-life issues, he has been a leader,” said CWPAC Executive Director, Mike Mears.

“When you take a look at his accomplishments and leadership abilities as past president for Missourians Against Human Cloning (the main organization against Amendment 2, the Human Cloning Amendment), his carrying of the bill to strengthen Missouri’s informed Consent laws, and sponsorship of key Missouri pro-life bills like the Unborn Child Prevention Act, it is no wonder CWPAC endorsed Dr. Onder.
Bob is the type of pro-family, pro-life leader, Beverly LaHaye was thinking of when she started CWPAC. ”

Earlier this summer, fellow Missourian and Eagle Forum Founder and President Phyllis Schlafly said, “I am happy to endorse Dr. Bob Onder. Bob is a proven leader on all the issues important to Missouri families and Eagle Forum members. He led the fight against the HPV vaccine mandate and authored a bill to crack down on illegal immigration.”

“We know we are getting a fighter with Bob. He isn’t just a reliable vote, he’s an articulate leader, especially on the issue of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and other pro-life issues,” Schlafly continued. “Bob Onder isn’t a career politician, but a Dad who wants to make a difference. That’s a refreshing change in Washington.”

Dr. Bob has been a pro-life activist for many years - in addition to being the Chief sponsor of this year’s Life bill that passed the Missouri House, HB1831, that would have given Missouri the strongest informed consent law in the nation. The Informed Consent Bill was met with strong support from leaders in the pro-life community across the state:

Kerry Messer, state director of Americans United for Life said, “Dr. Onder has been a great pro-life leader in our state. House Bill 1831 was one of the most important pro-life proposals we have seen in Missouri in years. I’m thrilled that he would propose legislation based on the same principles in Washington.”

“Informed consent legislation is vitally important to protect women and save children here in Missouri,” said Joe Ortwerth, Executive Director of Missouri Family Policy Council. “We were pleased to work closely with Dr. Onder in developing House Bill 1831, and his leadership in sponsoring this lifesaving legislation was outstanding. We are pleased to learn that he plans to make this same legislation a priority should he be elected to Congress, so that women all across the country will have the right to know all the facts when it comes to abortion.”

Bob’s peers recognized him in 2007 as a leader on conservative issues, naming him “Legislator of the Year for Life and Family Issues.” Bob was also the proud recipient of the 2007 “Legislator of the Year” from the Concerned Women for America. Bob is a former Board member of Missouri Right to Life and the past President of Missourians Against Human Cloning.

Introducing Nathan Bech, Republican for Congress from the 1st District of Massachusetts

In keeping with the theme of my post “Participatory Democracy”, I would like to introduce our readers to a veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, who is running for Congress in the 1st district of Massachusetts, Nathan Bech.

I am still getting to know Mr. Bech’s positions on the issues, but as most of you know, two of the most important issues for me are Respect For Life and Immigration. Nathan Bech has the positions I am looking for in a candidate, with strong pro life and pro border law enforcement stands.

It’s my understanding that the 1st CD in Massachusetts includes the western region of the state, mainly rural, with Amherst and Holyoke being two of the bigger cities within the 1st district. Oh, and did I mention, very liberal. As conservative as Nathan is, (he describes himself as moderately conservative) running for Congress in western Massachusetts as a Republican is not for someone who discourages easily. As a veteran of Army Intel, it makes sense that Nathan is not the shy, retiring type.

Good Luck to Nathan Bech in his campaign to unseat another out-of-touch liberal Democrat.

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.nathanbech.com/pa/ge/24/immigration

IMMIGRATION

We are a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. The sacrifice millions of hard working immigrants have made to come to the United States legally is undermined by those who seek an expedited path to prosperity by forgoing the process and breaking our laws. Nathan Bech believes that securing our borders is a matter of national security and fair play to the many law abiding immigrants seeking a new life in the United States.

Secure Our Borders

The first step we must take in order to tackle our immigration problem is to secure our borders. Nathan supports physical and technological barriers as well as a strengthened border patrol. Tight border security includes not just the entry and exit of people, but also the effective screening of cargo at our ports and other points of entry. Nathan also supports the toughest penalties for those who traffic in human cargo.

Tamper Proof ID system

Nathan Bech does not support a National ID card, but does support giving states the technological and financial assistance to create their own tamper proof ID which can be used for instant background checks. Employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens will face increased fines and actual incarceration. When work disappears the vast majority of illegal aliens will voluntarily leave the United States.

Increase Legal Immigration

We must create a temporary worker program for farmers and other seasonal business owners to hire foreign labor. Nathan supports a program that would allow foreign workers to travel to the United States to work for a period of no longer than nine months. Those workers would be required to return to their native countries for a period of time not less than the time spent in the United States before reapplying for temporary worker status.

Nathan supports family reunification as a goal of our immigration policy. Immigrant families are some of the strongest our country has and the decline of the family unit is one of the contributing factors to some of our most insidious social problems.

Nathan also believes we should actively recruit the best and brightest minds from other nations to immigrate to the United States. We need scientists to find cures for disease, technicians to develop software and doctors to care for patients as we begin to provide healthcare to all Americans. While American ingenuity is not dead, we should always be on the look out for the next Albert Einstein.

SANCTITY OF LIFE

Nathan Bech is pro-life and would support legislation which protects the rights of the unborn. Nathan believes that we must take action to protect women and their partners from such dire choices, by ensuring economic opportunity, promoting marriage, and educating them about humane alternatives to abortion.

Promoting Adoption

Musician Faith Hill, President Gerald Ford, Athlete Greg Louganis, and Steve Jobs founder of Apple Computers are just a few examples of adopted children who went on to have a dramatic impact on our culture, politics and economy. As a US Representative, Nathan Bech will seek ways to promote adoption as a first option for women struggling with a crisis pregnancy. Adoption is a gift that should be open to diverse families, and good parents should have the option to adopt inside the United States without undue amounts of red tape.

Torture of Prisoners

Nathan Bech believes we must have one standard for the treatment or prisoners of war or enemy combatants; they should be treated as we would want American service members in the same situation treated. Nathan believes that torture of our enemies not only is ineffectual but undermines our nation’s moral authority to compel human rights improvements around the world. Nathan further believes that we should not allow our allies to take actions on our behalf that we would not be willing to take ourselves.

Onder Pans Immigration Decision

http://blogs.columbiatribune.com/politics/2008/06/onder_pans_immigration_decisio.html

June 17, 2008

Congressional contender and state Rep. Bob Onder, R-Lake Saint Louis, condemned a U.S. Supreme Court decision that made it easier for individuals who overstay their visas to seek to remain in the United States legally.
From the AP:

The court ruled 5-4 Monday that someone who is here illegally may withdraw his voluntarily agreement to depart and continue to try to get approval to remain in the United States.
The decision essentially embraced a proposed Justice Department regulation governing the treatment of similar cases in the future.

Samson Dada, a Nigerian citizen, stayed beyond the expiration of his tourist visa in 1998. He married an American the following year and soon began trying to obtain a visa as an immediate relative of a citizen. But Dada and his wife apparently failed to submit some documents, causing immigration officials to deny the visa.

Onder said the decision “created new rights for illegal aliens out of thin air.”

“When I get to Washington, I will fight for the values that Missourians hold dear,” said Onder in a statement. “And one of those values is respect for the rule of law. I will fight for effective law enforcement against illegal immigration in Washington just as I successful fought for it in our own state capitol in Jefferson City.”

Onder is in a five-way Republican primary in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia. Another candidate for that post - former state Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-St. Elizabeth - addressed the issue of immigration earlier this month.

Strickland Fundraiser Featuring Mitt Romney Surpasses Expectations

http://blogs.venturacountystar.com/dennert/archives/2008/06/the-money-game.html

P R E S S R E L E A S E FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Matt Guthrie June 18, 2008 (805)

***-**** STRICKLAND FUNDRAISER FEATURING MITT ROMNEY SURPASSES EXPECTATIONS

Strickland Campaign Raises Nearly Quarter Million Dollars (Westlake Village) Last night, featured speaker Mitt Romney addressed a packed room of close to five hundred donors and supporters of Tony Strickland at the State Senate candidate’s highly anticipated fundraiser in Westlake Village. The event, which highlighted the importance of the 19th District Senate race, surpassed the original fundraising goal of $200,000 and took in nearly a quarter-million dollars. The sold out event was an overwhelming success for Strickland and continues the trend of strong and growing support for his campaign. With only two days to prepare, the Strickland team was also able to organize a successful pushback to a protest at the event that had been planned for over a week and included between 30-40 people. At 92 supporters strong, the pro-Strickland crowd more than doubled that of the protest demonstration as they lined the streets with American flags and signs showing their support for Tony Strickland and welcoming Governor Romney to California. Strickland’s opponent also didn’t escape the wrath of supporters as they carried signs slamming her tax and spend positions and exposed the hypocritical nature of contributions received by Hannah-Beth Jackson and the democratic party. Governor Romney’s message to California voters was clear. “I believe Tony Strickland can cut back on wasteful spending and can remove the interest of special interests and bring new ideas to Sacramento,” Romney said in an interview before the event. Strickland received a standing ovation when speaking about the importance of this particular race and his message about growing the economy while being environmentally responsible played well with the crowd. “You can be pro-economy and pro-environment,” Strickland said. ” The solution isn’t raising taxes, it’s to help the economy grow. Raising taxes will only drive people and businesses out of the state. We need to push the green economy so we can get off of foreign oil and reduce gas prices for all Californians”. ###

Romney Stumping In DC For Pro-Life Republicans

Hat Tip to 2thepoint for the heads up on this story. Gov. Romney continues to rack up the frequent flier miles as he headlines dinners and fundraisers to benefit conservative republicans. When he is ready to run again in 2012, he will have the most extensive campaign organization in the country.

Real Clear Politics

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, said to occupy a prominent place on whatever version of vice presidential short list John McCain has in his head, is keeping busy over a two-day stretch in Washington. While McCain is out of town, his one-time rival is certainly making his presence in Republican circles known.

Despite thunder and lightening, and more than a few tornado warnings, Romney attended a fundraiser held by the Susan B. Anthony List, which promotes pro-life Republicans, last night in Washington. Money from the event went to Rep. Steve Pearce, who on Tuesday claimed the GOP nomination to replace outgoing Senator Pete Domenici in New Mexico.

This morning Romney hit three morning shows — on MSNBC, CNN and Fox News — live from McCain’s Arlington, Virginia headquarters.

Later, Romney will hold a media availability at a swank hotel just up the road from McCain Central, with former Governor Jim Gilmore, the GOP nominee for retiring Senator John Warner’s seat, and businessman Keith Fimian, who is running for Tom Davis’s Eleventh District. Romney is also slated to attend a fundraiser for Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, who will run for re-election in 2009.

Jeff Beatty Easily Qualifies for Massachusetts Ballot: Set to Challenge Uber-Liberal Kerry this fall

Great news from the Beatty Campaign. Jeff Beatty, former elite Delta force member and Purple Heart winner has easily qualified for the Republican Senate ballot in Massachusetts, pitting him against John Kerry, former 2004 democratic Presidential nominee and 24 year Senatorial incumbent.

Congratulations to Jeff and to Team Beatty, including the unsung heroes of all successful campaigns, the grassroots activists who are the foot soldiers who ring the doorbells, put out the yards signs and make good things happen!

Summary: US Senate Candidate Jeff Beatty, a Republican from Massachusetts, has secured a spot on the ballot thanks to a grass roots campaign that gathered 17,000 certified signatures. Beatty thanked volunteers, staff members, donors and supporters at a gathering in Westborough this past weekend, where he also outlined his campaign plans for the coming months.

US SENATE CANDIDATE JEFF BEATTY THANKS VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF FOR SUCCESSFUL NOMINATION DRIVE, OUTLINES CAMPAIGN TO NOVEMBER

Grass roots effort results in 17 thousand certified signatures delivered to the Secretary of State’s office, assuring Beatty’s place on ballot

Boston - US Senate candidate Jeff Beatty, Republican, celebrated gaining access to the ballot by personally thanking supporters and volunteers who powered his signature drive. For two months, hundreds of supporters canvassed the Commonwealth sharing Beatty’s campaign vision and filling enough nomination sheets necessary to get Beatty on the ballot. Beatty’s successful nomination follows another significant milestone announced last month - 30 thousand donors who gave almost $1 million dollars to his campaign.

“I’m honored by how many people have decided to invest in our campaign, giving their time and effort to bring new leadership to the U.S. Senate,” said Beatty at a supporter gathering held in Westborough over the weekend. “This proves that people are excited about this race and, after 24 years of lackluster leadership, are ready to send a real fighter to Washington.”

Beatty began this campaign a year ago by launching an exploratory committee in April 2007. Since then he has traveled throughout Massachusetts listening to voters and sharing his vision to protect their families, protect their jobs and protect the Commonwealth and country.

“It is time to send someone with relevant experience to Washington to fight for these basic values,” said Beatty, a former Delta Force Officer and founder of a homeland security and public safety company. “I have owned a business, worked for years in public safety and security, and developed the background to solve the serious problems we face today. I’m running because we have waited too long for someone to step up and do the work.”

Beatty will spend the remaining spring and summer months introducing himself to voters and preparing for the hard contest coming in the fall.

Romney’s new role: Loyal GOP booster

From The Salt Lake Tribune

Mitt RomneyWASHINGTON - Mitt Romney isn’t talking about Mitt Romney.
He’s talking about John McCain, about energizing the party base, about strong candidates for a “strong economy, strong families and strong military.”
The former presidential candidate spent more than a year officially on the trail, talking himself up to voters as he sought the Republican nomination for the White House. But now he has a new role: boosting other Republicans.
The move, which brought Romney back to Utah last week to join President Bush in another fundraising blitz, is meant to prove Romney is a loyal soldier, and to help burnish his credentials for a possible White House bid in the future.
Romney, McCain’s former chief rival, now is one of the Arizona senator’s most active, effective fundraisers and cheerleaders. The head of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City appears to have headlined more events than any of the large field of former GOP presidential candidates and may be on track to raise the most money of the pack.
“I could go back to the private sector but I believe what I said during my campaign,” Romney told The Wall Street Journal recently. “I think this is a very critical time for the country. And I was helped by a lot of people and turning back to entirely personal pursuits would not be consistent with the many contributions of time and resources that came my way. So I’m going to help Senator McCain and other people who I think would make a difference.”
In a sense, Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, never left the trail when he ended his campaign last February. He has criss-crossed the country serving as a surrogate for McCain and backed the nominee-in-waiting on multiple television appearances.
McCain spokesman Jeff Sadosky said Romney has played a large role in the campaign and has been a “very, very active” surrogate.
“Governor Romney has been a tremendous help and we value his support,” Sadosky said.
Romney has spoken at the state party conventions in Nevada and Maine, and the Lancaster GOP convention in Pennsylvania. Saturday, he hit the Colorado Republican Convention and he’s slated to appear for McCain at the conventions in Oregon and Texas within the next two weeks.
Romney also is offering his help to boost McCain’s coffers, and has become essentially a Western warrior for McCain, drumming up support in areas where Romney is popular.
This week, Romney, with help from President Bush, raised about $2 million for McCain and the party in a fundraiser at his Deer Valley home. Since withdrawing, this was Romney’s second trip to raise money in Utah, the state second only to California in financial donations for Romney’s failed bid.
Romney also has called on his top money raisers to work on McCain’s behalf, inviting many of them to Houston in early May to meet the senator and jump on the Straight Talk Express.
Romney’s aggressive support for McCain has many pundits saying he is actively campaigning to be McCain’s running mate.
Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom dismisses such talk.
“We’re not going to join the . . . guessing game over who is going to be John McCain’s running mate,” FehrnÂstrom said. “That is not what Gov. Romney is focusing on. His focus is on helping John McCain and other Republicans get elected.”
To that end, Romney recently launched a new political action committee, the Free and Strong America PAC.
The group, with a post office box in his home of Belmont, Mass., is aimed at helping elect Republicans at all levels. Romney’s former deputy chief of staff and conservative outreach guru, Peter Flaherty, is serving as executive director.
Former senior adviser Tom Rath, who helped shepherd President Bush through the New Hampshire primary in 2000, says Romney has been getting some “positive feedback” from stumping for McCain and some people who weren’t sure of him as a candidate are now getting to know and like him better.
“He likes being involved, is getting really engaged on the ‘we need to elect John McCain’ message and feels he’s helping,” Rath says.
“He’s not spending much if any time thinking about V.P.,” Rath adds. “He knows it’s a long shot at best and basically out of his control, and he’s not a guy who worries too much about things he can’t control.”
Romney acknowledged to the Journal that he’d like to be the nominee, but he’s doing his best to pump the party up nonetheless.
“I would rather have the shoe on my foot but you recognize that when you don’t win, then, in some respects, I think you have a responsibility to help the person that does,” Romney told the newspaper.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to Meet With McCain VP Search Team

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s name is coming up more often in recent weeks as a possible McCain VP candidate. Reportedly, WIZBANG.COM had somebody “drop a dime” about a McCain advance man being spotted recently in Juneau.

A tipster sent us word that John McCain’s VP advance man Arthur Culvahouse has been spotted in Juneau, Alaska. There’s only one reason he would be there - to meet with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin about the Vice President position.

This comes on the heels of McCain’s Memorial Day weekend barbecue attended by Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, former White House budget director Rob Portman, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman. Supposedly that was in informal affair, not a vetting session, but it appears that the VP selection game is very much afoot.

Governor Palin would (in my estimation) make an excellent VP candidate for McCain. Thomas Cheplick at The American Spectator makes the case that she’s probably the only VP candidate who can balance the ticket against Obama. She’s also a potential magnet for disaffected Hillary Clinton voters, many of whom are just looking for a reason not to vote for Obama
