Despite a Flood of Federal Resources, Border Security Still an Issue

August 20th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Foreign Policy, Fox News, Illegal Immigration

Very good article on the progress of our national response to one of America’s greatest security threats, 6,000 miles of largely undefended borders.

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,407524,00.html

SEATTLE — For years America’s northern and southern borders — 5,938 miles of dense forest and open land — were fair game for drug dealers and illegal immigrants looking to sneak into the U.S. That was before September 11, 2001.

After the 9/11 terror attacks, securing America’s borders became a national priority, says Jay Ahern, deputy commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

“There was an absolute shift in thinking about the border, from drug interdiction, alien interdiction, criminal interdiction at our borders to one of national security,” Ahern said.

In the last seven years there has been a huge expenditure of money and resources to prevent an attack on America from the north or south.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was formed and, under it, Border Patrol was flooded with new resources.

By the end of this year, the number of agents patrolling the border is expected to be 18,000, double what it was eight years ago. About 338 miles of fence have been built in the south, and more is planned.

The Border Patrol has 267 aircraft — the largest non-military air force in the world — and four unmanned Predator B aircraft to watch the border.

And now all cargo is screened before it gets to the U.S., and shipments deemed high-risk are checked upon entry.

According to federal immigration statistics, fewer people are trying to cross into the U.S. and arrests of illegals dropped 20 percent last year and 8 percent in 2006.

Despite the improvements, critics say the U.S. is not close to securing the border, and not close to being safe.

“It would be so easy to come in here,” said Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, a group of volunteers who patrol the Canadian and Mexican borders. “There is literally no protection. There are some border patrol agents, but at night, I could assure you I could go into Mexico and return to the United States carrying a suitcase nuke.”

The “Mitt Romney Phenomenon?”

August 5th, 2008 | 14 Comments | Posted in Fox News, Mitt Romney

Not sure what to make of this snippet, if anything.

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.newshounds.us/2008/08/05/the_mitt_romney_phenomenon.php

Have you ever heard of the “Mitt Romney phenomenon?” I guess Fox News is trying to create one. This is what Neil Cavuto said today (August 5, 2008) on Your World: “Taking a look at a couple of other developments today, ah, what to make of the Mitt Romney phenomenon and is there something going on here? We’re going to explore that.”

Comment: What? Well, Cavuto never did “explore that” new “development” but he obviously telegraphed that there’s something exciting going on when it comes to Mitt Romney. Trying to soften the 27% crowd to the idea of a Romney VP pick?

Romney was on the show in a taped interview approximately five minutes later but there was no mention or discussion whatsoever of a “phenomenon.” Maybe Cavuto wanted viewers to have the word “phenomenon” in mind when they watched him? Don’t know but obviously the psychologists at Fox are hard at work.

Former White House Spokesman Tony Snow, Dead at 53

This news sadly comes only weeks after another prominent figure in American Politics Tim Russert died. :(

Tony Snow
June 1, 1955 - July 12, 2008

A Tribute From Brit Hume

Statement by The President

WASHINGTON, Jul 12, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Laura and I are deeply saddened by the death of our dear friend, Tony Snow. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Jill, and their children, Kendall, Robbie, and Kristi. The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character.
Tony was one of our Nation’s finest writers and commentators. He earned a loyal following with incisive radio and television broadcasts. He was a gifted speechwriter who served in my father’s Administration. And I was thrilled when he agreed to return to the White House to serve as my Press Secretary. It was a joy to watch Tony at the podium each day. He brought wit, grace, and a great love of country to his work. His colleagues will cherish memories of his energetic personality and relentless good humor.
All of us here at the White House will miss Tony, as will the millions of Americans he inspired with his brave struggle against cancer. One of the things that sustained Tony Snow was his faith - and Laura and I join people across our country in praying that this good man has now found comfort in the arms of his Creator.

The Obama Watch Comes to an End: Fox News Sunday Gets Obama!

Let the fire works begin! Chris Wallace will have a field day with Obama.

Chris Wallace must be happy… Fishbowl DC has learned that Sen. Barack Obama will finally appear on Fox News Sunday this weekend. A pre-taped interview is slated to take place Saturday in Marion, Indiana.

You’ll recall that Wallace started the “Obama Watch” in March (and even put notice of it on his office door) and dated it back to May 2006, when Wallace said Obama agreed to a face-to-face interview on Fox News Sunday.

Obama has largely avoided Fox throughout the campaign, although things changed on January 9 when he did do an interview with the cable news network.

We have to wonder: With Obama now doing Fox News Sunday, will he make good on his pledge to Bill O’Reilly to appear on “The O’Reilly Factor”?

UPDATE: Fox confirms our scoop in a release…

FOX News Sunday’s “Obama Watch” to Stop This Weekend FOX News Sunday host Chris Wallace will sit down for an exclusive one-on-one interview with Democratic Presidential Candidate Senator Barack Obama airing on Sunday April 27, 2008.

This interview follows the much talked about “Obama Watch” clock that FOX News Sunday began running on March 16, 2008 to track the time that had lapsed since Senator Obama accepted Wallace’s initiation to appear as a guest: 730 days, 13 hours, 53 minutes and 18 seconds.

The last clock count as of last Sunday was 765 days, 13 hours, 54 min, 47 seconds.

Mitt on Super Tuesday

In Case You Missed It: Governor Mitt Romney on Super Tuesday

Contact: Mitt Romney

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 /Standard Newswire/ — the following is the coverage of Governor Mitt Romney on Super Tuesday:

Governor Romney on The Importance Of These Times (Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” 2/5/08):

Governor Romney: “These are really critical times for our country. We face extraordinary challenges from the jihadists, from new competition from Asia. We see our economy getting weaker. People wonder how they are going to pay their bills, gas bills, heating bills. If America keeps on the same track we’re on, we’re not going to remain the most powerful nation on Earth. Washington is fundamentally broken, and it’s not going to get changed by people who spent their whole life in Washington. You’re going to have to have somebody come from the outside, the way Ronald Reagan came from the outside, and shake Washington up. And that’s exactly what I intend to do. I don’t think it’s also possible to have somebody lead our party who is very much outside the house that Reagan built. Senator McCain’s a fine fellow, national hero. But his positions on the keystone issues of his 25 years are positions that are more like Democrats than like those of Republicans.”

Governor Romney On Conservative Support (MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” 2/5/08):

Governor Romney: “[T]his is just the beginning. We’ve got a lot of states to go. And what we’re seeing is, by virtue of voices like yours and others across the conservative world, conservatives are waking up, and they’re saying, ‘Look, we just can’t take a left turn in our party. We’ve got to stand by the principles that Ronald Reagan laid out.’ And I’m the conservative candidate in this race. It’s become a two-person race, and in California over the weekend, as you point out, the polls show that I’m tied there or doing a little better than tied. You never know whether to believe polls or not. But then you look at Maine, we just had a caucus in Maine over the weekend. Both U.S. Senators were fighting for Senator McCain, but you know what, I won there by 50 to 20. The signs are good that conservatives are listening and saying, ‘You know what, we don’t want to take the liberal path.’”

Memo to Fox News …

February 4th, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Conservative, Fox News, John McCain, Mitt Romney

I know there are a lot of people out there frustrated with Fox News for their lack of fair, unbiased coverage.  Reader Rebecca Weimar from Canada wrote an excellent letter to Fox:

“Fox News what is up with you??? As a Canadian I have always preferred getting my US news and views from Fox because of what I saw as “fair and balanced” reporting and analysis. Of course I was expecting much of the same when it came to the republican primaries. I must be going blind because I don’t see it. I see an overwhelming support from you for John McCain, and this despite his blatant dishonesty, real-time flip flopping, anti-republican/conservative record in the senate . . . I could go on.

I am so disheartened because of your slanted coverage and bias against Mitt Romney who is proving to be a great MAN, true blue and wise. I remember watching Bill O’Reilly a while back, state with such surety that Mr. Romney was going to be the Republican nominee. He did a relatively in-depth interview with Romney which was “fair and balanced”. He asked some tough questions and got thoughtful, honest and thorough answers. In fact, Romney gets asked the toughest questions of any of the candidates, and intelligently and methodically answers each and every one of them without prevarication (unlike others).

Bill O’Reilly used to be my hero. Now, I can’t trust him. He and his team have either not done in-depth research on the two top Republican candidates, or they have and are suppressing the truth.

The Internet is a wonderful invention which has enabled us regular folk to do our own research and believe me, we can dig very deep. We also have the intelligence to sift through the “crap” about each candidate and go straight to their own stated stands on issues and, more importantly, their records on what they have done to prove their qualifications for office.

Mitt Romney has no equal in this contest, neither on the Republican nor the Democratic side. He is a “will do” man of action and integrity who seeks to be President of the United States of America, not for his own agrandizement, but to help your nation and its people prosper again. As a Canadian I understand that a strong America (economically, morally and defensively) translates into a better world. In my view America, with the right leadership, is not a nation-builder, but a nation who supports other nations to build themselves up. That’s a good thing!

So, Bill O’Reilly and you other Fox News celebrities, stop your own spin, analyse your own biased coverage, credit your audience with more smarts than you’re currently giving us, and get back to being “fair and balanced.”

Thank you,
Rebecca Weimar

…Head to Head Polls…

I am in wonderment as to why the MSM pays any attention to the Head to Head polls when we have not even finished the primaries. I know that it is fun for them to speculate and it makes news, but polls on this national level mean nothing. If I was to look at this logically why would we, as the republican party, want to send McCain up against Hillary. Politically it would be like a Brother and Sister running against each other for President of the U.S. Are we so blind that we cannot see that rotating chairs in Washington with people that have been their for so many years is not a good idea. Why do you think that the most successful coporations higher their CEO from outside unless they were groomed specicially for the role. This process would not take 30 years. OOOOOOOOh I forgot this is washington, not the real world…

Romney Gets “Heavenly Interruption” Upon Addressing The Results From Nevada While In Florida

Here’s the Commentary from Nevadagirl:

Nevadagirl on 20 Jan 2008 at 9:46 pm

Have you guys seen this video yet - Mitt’s response to the Mormon question interrupted by thunder. Pretty funny. I found the Nevada exit poll data on Mormons and Hispanics interesting as well. Too bad Mitt is the one that has to explain this basic information to everyone, since the media refuses to.

Here’s the Video:

CNN, Fox News, and others explain Nevada

January 19th, 2008 | 22 Comments | Posted in CNN, Fox News, Mitt Romney, Nevada, Politics, Religion

I just got dish, and am now exposed to more stupidity than I can handle.

I have heard many talking heads explain that the reason that Mitt Romney is going to win Nevada is because of the “large” LDS population in Nevada. One bimbo on CNN breathlessly explained that you just have to admit that it is a large explanation of why he is doing well out there that there is no denying it.

This from the National Review: http://corner.nationalreview.com/

Worried [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

I am noticing that the media is gearing up to discount Romney’s win in Nevada due to the higher numbers of Mormons in that state. So I’m no expert in statistics, but Mormons make up around 7% of the population in Nevada and from what I can tell the evangelical number is between 30-35%. How can they even attempt such spin? I have really been resisting the conspiracy stuff when it comes to Romney and the media but I don’t know if I can hold out much longer.

Thank you for sticking up for Romney while so many around you try to tear him down. I appreciate it.

Signed,
a homeschooler in Iowa that didn’t caucus for Huckabee

The religious affiliations of the people of Nevada are:

It is obvious that we need to take up a collection. Perhaps we can buy the people over at CNN a computer, and pay the monthly service fee for the internet, so they can do some of this research themselves.

The numbers are different than the numbers from the person who sent the e-mail to National Review. But this fact remains no matter which numbers you use: There are half as many people who would vote for Romney than Huckabee if they voted by religion.

UPDATE: The wikipedia numbers said “needs citation” and so I would not trust them as facts. Do you have access to some good numbers about Nevada?

UPDATE #2: Just watching “Morning Joe on Saturday” and the bimbo said, “Romney will win Nevada because of the large number of Mormons there.”

COME ON! CAN WE GET ANY MORE STUPID?

It has NOTHING to do with the issues?

UPDATE #3: According to this there are 169,714 LDS people in Nevada. According to this there are 2.6 million people in Nevada. That means 6.5% of the population is LDS. So 35% of Nevada is Evangelical. That is 5.4 times the number of LDS people in Nevada. So keep THESE FACTS in mind every time you hear CNN tell you the only reason Romney one Nevada…

UPDATE #4

I’ve already seen headlines at MSN.com that say Romney gets the Mormon vote. I wonder if this is the MSM’s attempt to further rile up Evangelicals in hopes of getting MSM’s favoite RINO–Mike Huckabee–more votes in future elections.

But here are the facts.

Mitt got 94% of the vote in Nevada.

That means he did worse than Bush in 2004 in the general election were “W” got 95% of the Mormon vote in the entire country.

Bush isn’t Mormon. Mormons like conservatives. Romney’s a conservative.
