In the meantime, great news coming from battleground California. According to Reuters/CSPAN/Zogby, Gov. Romney is leading California over “Open Borders” McCain 37% to 34%. Below are a couple of quotes from the article.

If the swing towards Romney in California continues, he will emerge from Tuesday’s contest in a solid second place with a new narrative and a renewed debate about the race –can Romney surpass McCain in Ohio and Texas in March? The rapidly fading Huck would simply disappear, as he is doing in many places where the obvious has already registered: A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain.

As the Arizona numbers underscore, McCain would not even bring a marginally united party with him. Given his animosity towards Romney, McCain wouldn’t add Romney to the ticket ,and the die-hard opponents of McCain will spend the next nine months hammering on how Huckabee blocked the consolidation of the conservative vote thus allowing the Reagan coalition to be eclipsed. Many would get over it and pull the lever for McCain, but how many would work for him or contribute to his coffers? And how many irreconcilables does it take to doom the campaign from the start –5%? 10% Not many, especially when it comes to the purple states of Colorado and Ohio.

Fox News reports Mitt Romney leading polls in Missouri!! That’s what I’m talking about! Go Team Missouri!

Mitt Romney will be in St. Louis this afternoon and we will be Super Bowl partying with the man who is now leading the Reagan coalition. So, how cool is that?

Thanks to everyone all over the country for all your hard work and dedication. Win, lose or draw, I am proud to be on the same team as you fine ladies and gentlemen.

Big turnout this weekend for phone banking and canvassing. We had more volunteers than phones at our local office. Thanks to everyone for that effort as well!

Well, now it’s on to Super Tuesday and whatever the outcome, we will continue to fight the good fight.

CNN POLITICAL TICKER

This very brief article proves, that if you are John “Open Borders” McCain, you can cram a large volume of dopey statements into a very small space. Here’s the first one.

1. “From what we see in the polls, there is a very good chance it could be over on Tuesday,” said the Arizona senator, adding: “The sooner we get that done, the sooner I can go to work on uniting the party.”

Stop kidding around, alright?…….”the sooner I can go to work on uniting the party.” Sen. McCain, if you are the Republican nominee, you will put the party through a meat grinder, and what comes out on the other end will in no way resemble anything like the Republican party that Ronald Reagan helped to build. You will never “unite” the party because you agree with almost nothing that this party stands for. I have already witnessed scores of people talking and writing about how they will work to oppose everything you will try to do to this country, because they think you will take the country in the wrong direction.

2. Despite his complicated history with the party’s base, he said, pragmatic Republicans will back him when faced with the Democratic alternative.

Why would we want to back McCain? The “Democratic alternatives” are virtually carbon copies of McCain. If we get McCain, we get Hillary’s policies. If McCain wins the Republican nomination, we just lost the election, because no matter what happens from that point forward, we get a liberal Democrat in the White House.

3. The senator also dismissed a Drudge Report story that he had met with former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and weighed joining the Democratic Party. McCain told reporters Friday that he had met with Daschle at the Democrat’s request, but had just laughed and reaffirmed his GOP loyalties when asked about the prospect of switching parties.

The best way I know of to “reaffirm” GOP loyalties is to at least occasionally vote with the Republican party. On ANWR, tax cuts, GITMO, campaign finance, immigration and energy caps and taxes, if their are any areas where McCain has “reaffirmed” his GOP loyalties, I’m not aware of it.

I just received this email from Trent Christensen. He is saying what the MSM will NEVER say. They will never admit that John “Open Borders” McCain is a paper tiger and even with the help of tens of millions of dollars in free publicity, Mitt Romney is still in McCain’s rear view mirror and getting ready to pass him on the right!

With the fawning, adoring press shamelessly promoting this liberal Democrat, and attacking Mitt Romney 24/7/365, McCain should be leading by 30% points. It is a testament to Romney’s bulldog tenacity and to his supporters competence that he has been able to endure the withering assaults of the press, the Democrats, the entrenched Washington bureaucrats and some members of his own party and is still, despite it all, fighting the good fight and doing so with good humor and enthusiasm.

Please feel free to send this to all your friends and family members and to use it as a “talking points memo” as you make your rounds this weekend.

Subject: What Republicans need to know before they vote! (PLEASE FORWARD)

Dear Fellow Romney Supporters,

We have heard a lot of feedback from Romney supporters all over the country that feel like they are not getting the real picture about Governor Romney’s chances of winning the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Many people say that the information they do receive always paints a picture of Governor Romney as losing this race. You are entitled to know how Governor Romney is truly doing in this race. PLEASE FORWARD this information on to friends and family and help get the word out about the truth about Governor Romney’s campaign!

The TRUTH is this: Governor Romney CAN and SHOULD win the Republican nomination for President of the United States. This is a two-man race between Governor Romney and John McCain and Governor Romney is literally only a few points/delegates behind! Senator McCain would like everyone to believe that somehow Governor Romney is too far behind to ever catch up. That is NOT true. We need to rally behind Governor Romney, because only a slight increase in support among conservatives is all that’s needed to tip the scales in favor of Governor Romney and conservative change!

People shouldn’t think that McCain has this rapped up. They need to understand the tremendous support that Governor Romney already has. Consider the following:

1) Governor Romney has led for most of this race and is still positioned well to win the nomination! Until recently Governor Romney has handily led the delegate count. Though he is currently in second place in the delegate count since the Florida Primary, by CNN’s count Governor Romney has 6% of the support he needs to win and John McCain ONLY HAS 8%. Translation = Governor Romney is not trailing far behind; in reality, he is right on McCain’s heels and is well-positioned to succeed in the upcoming primaries because he is the true conservative.

2) Governor Romney is the True Conservative in this race. Governor Romney supported the Bush Tax Cuts and supports making them permanent, he supports appointing conservative judges and justices like John Roberts and Samuel Alito, and he will confront and defeat radical Islamic Jihad, end our energy dependence on foreign oil, curb federal spending, and sustain traditional American values. But don’t just take my word for it.

3) True conservative thinkers all support Governor Romney. For a small sampling, consider the following sources:

4) Governor Romney has National Support: Listed at the bottom of this email are just some of the additional names of the endorsements of Governor Romney from elected officials, national figures and several publications and newspapers. (Feel free to add yours as well when you forward this on!)

5) Governor Romney has tremendous financial support, from people just like you. Not including ANY of Governor Romney’s personal contributions to his campaign, Governor Romney’s campaign has raised more money than any candidate in the history of the Republican Party! He has raised roughly $20 million more than John McCain thus far. And that financial support remains strong; in fact, the day after placing second in the New Hampshire primary—what some were calling a “big loss” to McCain—Governor Romney held a fundraiser and raised $5 million in one day. By comparison, the democrat winner in NH, Hillary Clinton, also held a fundraiser that day and raised only $700,000. This relates directly to his ability to stay the course and beat the Democrat nominee in November.

6) Governor Romney is the most electable Republican because he can fight the fight. I just mentioned money raised. Money will mean a lot in the coming months! John McCain is currently spending as much money as he brings in and is $4.5 million in debt. The Democrats have raised hundreds of millions of dollars and if Senator McCain becomes the nominee, he will have no money with which to compete with the Democrats. The Democrats will bury him with the sheer size of their war chests. He CANNOT compete with them financially.

7) Senator McCain CANNOT beat the Democrats. You cannot beat the Democrats by acting like a Democrat. John McCain has sided with the Democrats on issues from supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants, attacking the 1st Amendment with campaign finance reform, opposing drilling for oil in ANWR to reduce our reliance on foreign oil, and he voted TWICE against the Bush tax cuts. John McCain was reported to have considered running as John Kerry’s running mate in 2004. You can’t beat Democrats at their game, you need someone who talks AND acts like a true Republican leader. That is clearly not John McCain; that person is Governor Romney.

We need to unite NOW behind Governor Romney. People ought not to vote for John McCain simply because they aren’t given all the information about how strong Governor Romney is as a candidate. PLEASE FORWARD this on so that those who believe in having a strong military, and a strong economy, and strong families know that Governor Romney CAN win this election.

Governor Romney is as strong as ever in this race. And with all of us united behind true conservative principles, Governor Romney WILL win. Please forward this email on and vote for Governor Mitt Romney.

 …if you throw him a knotty problem that needs to be solved by Friday, he’s the candidate we’d bet on to have it done by Tuesday.

The Hartford Courant, from the Editors:

Mitt Romney’s record while governor of Massachusetts was much better than he’s given credit for. It’s the record of an achiever.

The Republican governor led the fight to control sprawl and bring more affordable housing to the Bay State with groundbreaking laws and a dramatic reorganization of state agencies. In 2003, he combined transportation, housing, environmental and energy agencies into a super-agency, charged it with stopping runaway suburban growth, then appointed a Democrat environmentalist to run it. By comparison, Connecticut is still nibbling around the edges of smart growth.

The former venture-capital company CEO and rescuer of the 2002 Winter Olympics also worked with the Democratic legislature to stop job losses and reduce a projected $3 billion budget shortfall. He managed to balance his state’s budget without sales or income tax or gas increases. And he streamlined other government agencies — all while maintaining the state’s huge accomplishments from a decade of education reforms that put Massachusetts ahead of Connecticut on many academic achievement scores.

Though some in his party abhorred it as “socialized medicine,” Mr. Romney backed a bold state plan to cover the uninsured that required every Massachusetts citizen to have health insurance but provided aid for those who couldn’t afford it. His business school case-method approach to health care — let states experiment; see who comes up with the best ideas — is the most likely to yield ingenious and flexible solutions to an increasingly worrisome national issue.

Mr. Romney’s shifts on his views on abortion, stem-cell research, same-sex marriage and other issues are indeed troubling: Conservatives as well as liberals are unsure of what to expect from him if elected. But those who have worked with him praise his openness, his easy ability to transcend narrow political ideology to get a job done. And presidential candidates often pay tribute to the traditional wings of their parties at primary time. Mr. Romney’s chief rival, Arizona Sen. John McCain, has pandered as well in, for example, changing his position on the Bush tax cuts, which he once voted against and now wants extended.

We part company with Mr. McCain on his opposition to abortion and his support of the war in Iraq, among other things. But he has earned The Courant’s admiration as a campaign-finance reformer, a voice of decency in the treatment of prisoners of war and a heroic maverick who will cross the aisle to achieve bipartisan compromise on issues such as immigration.

With the economy gaining on the war in Iraq as the leading worry for Americans, however, Mr. Romney’s real-world grasp of economic principles, his real-world successes on both sides of the public/private-sector aisle, are increasingly valuable assets.

Mark Twain said about Wagner that his music “is better than it sounds.” Mr. Romney is a better leader than his perplexing campaign performance makes him out to be. He doesn’t have the smooth-talking populist appeal of Sen. Mike Huckabee or the years of working on public policy that Sen. McCain does. But if you throw him a knotty problem that needs to be solved by Friday, he’s the candidate we’d bet on to have it done by Tuesday.

He’s believable when he promises to bring “innovation and transformation” to Washington. He has done it.

He is The Courant’s choice for the Feb. 5 Republican presidential primary.
