Mitt Romney: True, Consistent, Long-Time Conservative

Flag Waving

In the last few days, I have been reading most of the comments that many of you been leaving in this blog. First of, I wish to thank all of you who have done so; even those who presently disagree with the authors of this site or with Governor Romney himself. Those of us who strive to bring truth to the surface as we attempt to enlighten, are grateful.

Many of the comments are by new visitors. I have read comments by those who have served Fred Thompson well. Many are from Ron Paul supporters. Others, though they may not state their allegiance, may presently support Governor Huckabee, Mayor Giuliani, or Senator McCain. Many of you are contemplating support of Governor Romney. My concern is that many are stating they are afraid that if he is elected President, he will “revert to his liberal past” or words to that effect.

Mitt w/grandson and Ann

With complete respect, I offer some information. First, many comments mention that Gov. Romney is a privileged man with a privileged upbringing; the inference being that he is out of touch with the average man and woman. Those who struggle day to day to provide for their families. I will save what I would like to write here for another future post. Suffice to say that Governor Romney has spent thousands of hours in silent service (one-on-one) of children, women, and men with struggles many of us will never know (crying with them; praying with them; helping them).   That, as a lay leader in his church over many years.   If you want to get a glimpse of the real man, click here —-> MESSED UP HAIR
(keep in mind that Governor Romney has never mentioned this, nor has he ever mentioned personal service rendered to others; unlike Mike Huckabee who has done so many times).

It is simply false that GMR has ever been liberal in any way. Even the label “pro-choice”, to which GMR admitted, is misleading because his actions, his behavior, his decisions have always been on the side of life. Why am I writing this to you at 2:00 in the morning instead of sleeping? Because too many good, strong conservatives have bitten into the hook of the liberal MSM (hook, line, and sinker) to simply accept the flip/flop label altogether without doing any primary research. I must admit I did too in 2006 before I conducted my own primary research. Don’t make a fatal mistake. Conduct your own, personal, primary research on the man and you will find what I did. That he has always been a consistent conservative.

Mitt with Little Girls’ Interview

Proof? Look at this simple flyer to contrast GMR’s positions to that of Senator Kennedy as GMR ran against him in the 90s. Click here ——-> THE REAL ROMNEY (remember, this campaign flyer showing Governor Romney’s positions, is from 1994)

But don’t take my word for it or even the content of this flyer that has been around for years. Please conduct your own research. It takes time, but you will discover, as I did, that the truth about the man is altogether different than what the MSM and Governor Romney’s competitors want you to swallow without thinking.

One good place to start is the following site. Click here —–> Encyclopedia Mittanica maintained by our own Mike Laub.

Lastly, for those of you who are just now discovering Governor Romney and wish to get different perspectives from those who have conducted extensive research into the man, the statesman, the husband/father, the volunteer, click here ——> WHY ROMNEY? (be sure to scroll down; there are dozens of entries)

To compliment Ann Marie’s post just below this one, I decided to bring to the top an outstanding interview conducted by Autumn McAlpin last summer. Autumn is a professional writer and author. We were returning on a flight from Boston to California, after a national call day. As I recall, Autumn was able to spend over 90 minutes with Ann during this flight. I remember Autumn telling me how the first 15 minutes or so was a relaxed conversation in which Ann asked Autumn about her family. Incidentally, Autumn recently had a new addition to her family.

This is her post:

The Most Articulate Interview with Ann Romney Yet…

January 24th, 2008 | 7 Comments | Posted in Ann Romney, Florida, Mitt Romney, Video

I’ve heard so many disparaging comments about Ann Romney on the internet because of her choice to stay home with her children while they were growing up. I hear things like she’s dumb, she’s not smart, she just goes along with what her husband says because she’s a doormat. Well, I’ve always known that to be the furthest from the truth, and having met a few times in person and gotten the opportunity to speak with her one on one one I know it beyond of a shadow of a doubt to be false these claims.

If you needed any proof of her intellect, after you watch this video you’ll come away convinced. The thing is about Ann Romney is that she’s not only smart, she’s funny, she’s warm, she’s kind, she’s generous, she’s giving, and she’s one that I’ll be so fortunate to call our First Lady of the United States..

Here’s Ann Romney (thing to mention is that this affiliate offered every single candidate the opportunity to come speak to them…this is an Orlando affiliate mind you…and the Romney campaign was the only one that sent anyone on behalf of Mitt…the two interviewers seemed just enthralled with Ann…then again who wouldn’t?)

P.S. Every one of these videos that I put up via “Clip Syndicate” I get a little commission off of, so make sure and watch them :)

Welcoming myself–live from Urbandale!

Welcome to me, the latest addition to the ElectRomneyIn2008.com blogger staff. My name is Paul Johnson and this is my first posting. I have some good tidbits for you live from Urbandale, IA, one of Mitt Romney’s volunteer campaign sites.

First a bit about me: I’m a corporate lawyer by trade, trained at BYU both undergrad (dual major in English and Business) and grad school (JD/MBA). I started my career in the internet boom in Palo Alto, CA in ‘96, transferred with my then-current firm to San Diego in ‘99, and have stayed in San Diego since. I specialize in corporate financings and in mergers and acquisitions.

My intro to Mitt Romney was, like many, through hearing about the debacle that was unfolding at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics. As someone who spent a lot of time in Utah, I didn’t want the state or our country to be embarrassed by the event. I heard someone named Mitt Romney, a very successful business person with Bain, was being put in charge, and not long after was hearing things were turning around. Of course September 11 intervened and the Olympics staff had to respond to an entirely unforeseen security threat in just a few months’ time. I myself was going to be attending the event with my 3 sons, so security was a concern for me. When I arrived, security was tight and the event unbelievably well-organized.

Next I heard about the Miracle in Massachusetts, how the same Mitt Romney, a republican, had somehow been elected to be governor of a deep blue state. Another good impression. I knew this person must have cross-party appeal. More good news followed as Mitt was able to balance MA’s budget, then actually adopt a healthcare plan tailored for the state. Then I hear about the MA Supreme Court’s decision (described here by CNN). CNN said at the time: “Massachusetts’ governor immediately denounced Tuesday’s decision and said he would work for a constitutional amendment to overturn it,” and I was glad to know we had a resourceful man of integrity at the forefront of this issue.

More good impressions followed. A few years ago Matt Romney, Mitt’s son, moved into my neighborhood (see Matt’s musings at the Five Brothers Blog). Matt and I ended up on some volunteer assignments together. I’d told Matt I was a baseball fan, so he invited me at one point to a game with him, his brother, Tagg and a few other friends. I came to find out as well that another friend, Jim Davies, was Ann Romney’s brother. When it began to be rumored Mitt might run for president, I told Matt if his dad ran, I’d be interested in pitching in. Soon I was attending events in San Diego and contributing to the campaign, a first for me. A couple weeks ago I began responding to some bitter and biased posts about Mitt, his family and his religion, some things I knew a little about first-hand, by some readers of The Politico (a site I otherwise enjoy) and other political websites. Now I find myself in Urbandale doing my first blog post!

I’ll get to where I agree with Mitt on policy issues in future posts, but for now here are some snapshots from one of the command centers.

A visit from Ann Romney

The troops got encouragement from Ann Romney just before lunch. She met with volunteers and gave her pitch for her husband as a man capable of addressing our country’s complex issues.

Here’s the view from the cheap seats!

Visits from the Press

Yesterday we had a visit from CNN. Today the folks from Salt Lake’s KSL TV and Salt Lake’s CBS affiliate were here, as was RAI from Italy. Jim Davies gave an interview in fluent Italian. It’s been great to be at ground zero at such an influential time in American politics. Channel 24 from Argentina is just going through now. Wish you were here, where we hope to be a part of electing the next president of the U.S. More to come…

Why I am supporting Mitt Romney for President

As we approach the primary voting season, there are more and more new folks finding their way to our humble blog. The information I found on this blog was extremely helpful to me as I assessed the various candidates in search of “the One.” As such, I thought it would be fitting for me to share why I am a staunch supporter of Governor Mitt Romney in his run for the White House.

In a nutshell, Mitt Romney is the only “full-spectrum” Conservative who can rally the support of all three wings of the Reagan coalition, namely, Social, Economic, and Foreign Policy Conservatives.

For a full treatment of Mitt Romney’s positions, I would refer you to his comprehensive policy book “Vision for a Strong America.” Let me summarize here, however, the highlights across the major issues:

Foreign Policy
o War against Islamic Fascism: We are engaged in a multi-front war which will require using all of our military, economic, and diplomatic might to win; we must defeat the terrorists and those who aid and abet them as well as help the Muslim people enter the 21st century (click here and here)
o Iraq and Afghanistan: The surge is working and we must do what it takes to help Iraq and Afghanistan become stable democratic allies in the war on Islamic Fascism and support our troops (click here and here)
o Iran: Iran must not be allowed to become a nuclear state; diplomacy and economic sanctions are critical, but may not be enough; the military option must remain on the table (click here)
o Military: Need to increase defense spending to a minimum of 4% of GDP to make sure our armed forces have the equipment they need in the field and the support the need back home; the best ally of peace is a strong America (click here and here)

Economic Policy
o Taxes: We need to keep the Bush tax cuts permanent, eliminate the Death Tax, and cut taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest to zero for the Middle Class (click here, and here)
o Spending: We need to restrain Federal spending and close the deficit; will veto any budget where non-defense discretionary spending growth exceeds inflation minus 1%; Need to give the President a line-item veto; Strong track record of financial management from Massachusetts where he closed a $3B deficit and turned it into a $1B surplus without raising taxes; carry out a comprehensive review of government spending to increase efficiency and effectiveness (click here and here)
o Entitlements reform: Maintain benefits for current Seniors, but institute fundamental reforms combining slowing the rate of increase for benefits based on income, extending the retirement age, individual retirement accounts, and no tax increases (click here)
o Healthcare: Mitt Romney is the only candidate on either side of the aisle who implemented a universal health care plan; He covered all of the citizens of Massachusetts using market-based insurance without raising taxes; Governor Romney advocates a Federalist state-by-state approach to make health insurance more affordable for everyone (click here)
o Globalization: Continue to trade around the world but make sure we negotiate level playing fields in foreign markets and upgrade American competitiveness through investments in education and innovation (click here and here)

Culture and Values
o Illegal immigration: Control the border first and turn of the “magnets” that attract illegal immigrants by implementing an employment verification system, no special path for illegal immigrants to become citizens (i.e. no amnesty), no sanctuary cities, increased enforcement by local police agencies (click here, here, and here)
o Traditional marriage: In favor of amending the constitution to keep marriage defined as between a man and a woman; fought the Massachusetts Supreme Court to prevent the state from becoming a destination for same-sex couples looking for marriage licenses (click here and here and here)
o Life: Much has been made of Governor Romney’s switch from being Pro-Abortion to Pro-Life; This is a critical issue for me; I have heard many times why he made this change, and I believe him; I believe that Mitt Romney will fight for the rights of the unborn and be a great leader in supporting Life (click here, here, and here)

The choice of a nominee and President, however, is not strictly a “right-brained” decision based on policy statements and positions. There needs to be something inspirational about a candidate whether it’s the way that they speak to a crowd, interact one on one, or something about their personal story that sets them apart.

Experiencing Mitt through articles and videos really helped seal the deal for me. Below, I have listed some of what I would consider the best of the best articles and videos that helped me come to the decision to support Mitt actively. I’m sure I’m missing some great material, but there is a lot down below. I would encourage you to click through as much of this as you can, and if you have a favorite that wasn’t listed, please leave a link in the comments!

Key videos, speeches, appearances, and articles:
Articles
o Romney to the Rescue (Newsmax) – Great overview of Mitt Romney
o National Review’s endorsement of Mitt Romney
o The House that Mitt Built (Private Equity International) – Behind the scenes view of how Mitt ran Bain Capital and his leadership style
o The Making of Mitt Romney (Boston Globe) – Reasonably balanced biography of each of the major phases of Mitt’s life starting from his youth through today
o Consultant in Chief (Wall Street Journal) – Interview of Mitt where he talks about how he would fix the Federal Government
o For Romney & Company, Campaign is all Business (NY Times) – How Mitt runs his campaign and what it would mean for his Presidency
o Evangelicals for Mitt statement of support
o Mark DeMoss on why Evangelicals should support Mitt
o Ann Romney Opens Up (People Magazine) – Great interview with Ann; she would be a fantastic First Lady!

Speeches
o “Faith in America” – Seminal address on the role of religious faith and liberty in our nation
o Address to the Value Voters Summit – Seminal address on culture and value issues
o Iowa Straw Poll victory speech
o Highlights from the Republican debates (click 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th)
o Speech at CPAC 2007 – One of Mitt’s first major addresses to the leading grassroots gathering of Conservatives; one of his best speeches in my opinion
o Presidential Campaign Announcement – Mitt announcing that he’s running and why he’s running

Campaign videos
o Biographical overview video of Mitt Romney (click part I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII)
o “Path to Victory” webcast – Mitt and Meg Whitman (CEO of eBay) discussing the 2007 campaign and discussing the plan for 2008
o Retrospective of Governor Romney’s campaign in 2007
o Online “Ask Mitt Anything” – For those of us who don’t live in an early primary state, Mitt held an online town hall meeting which provides a really good overview of his key positions
o Christmas 2006 – Behind the scenes look at the Romney family and how they made the decision together that Mitt should run for President; cynics have criticized this video as contrived, but I love the fact that he has held his family together while achieving such exceptional success; you can’t fake this stuff

Media appearances
o Mitt on Jim Cramer of CNBC’s Mad Money – Great interview by Jim Cramer where he calls Mitt the “Best businessman in America”
o Mitt on ABC News talking about Ann – Great interview of Mitt where he discusses what he loves so much about Ann
o Mitt on Meet the Press – Tim Russert throws everything he’s got plus the kitchen sink at Mitt who proceeds to address each point in a clear, classy, and compelling way

My favorite TV spots
o “Searched” – Compelling true story of how Mitt Romney shut down Bain Capital and moved all the employees to NYC to search for and find the daughter of one of his partners
o “Choice: Judgment” – Striking contrast ad highlighting Mike Huckabee’s 1,033 pardons and clemencies (more than 2x his three predecessors) vs. zero from Mitt Romney
o “Choice: The Record” – Ad contrasting Mitt’s record on illegal immigration vs. Mike Huckabee’s record of supporting tax payer funded scholarships and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants
o “Not Politically Correct” – Mitt’s record supporting life, English immersion education, and traditional marriage
o “Experience Matters” – Ad highlighting the lack of real world, executive experience on the part of Hillary Clinton (and equally applicable to the other Democrats)
o “Ready for Action” – Summary of Governor Romney’s stump speech in 60 seconds; user-generated ad based on a contest that was run back in September
o “Our Home” – Some precious footage of Mitt playing with his children and grandchildren; focuses on the importance of strengthening our families
o “Leadership” and “Energy” – I just love the images of Mitt jogging through the backwoods and the focus on his track record in business; I think he’s the only politician I’ve seen jogging where it looked like he was actually in shape…not just a photo op
o “Ocean” – Ad lamenting the degradation of our culture and Mitt’s thoughts on how he would like to address it; as a parent this one really resonated with me
o “Tested, Proven” – One of his early ads highlighting his track record in Massachusetts
o “I Like Vetoes” – Ad highlights his track record of vetoing excessive spending; no doubt in my mind that he’ll control spending after seeing this ad and other times when he has addressed this topic

Finally, it is one thing to support Mitt with your vote, but I’d like to ask you to consider supporting Mitt in a more active way. Like many of you, I had always followed politics, but never became active in politics (other than voting) until this year in support of Governor Romney.

This year is different. First, this is arguably the most consequential election in over twenty years. The challenges and issues that will be faced by our next President will have far reaching ramifications for our children and grandchildren.

Additionally, we face a set of candidates on the Republican side who represent vastly different positions and perspectives, some of whom threaten to tear asunder the Reagan coalition that has served us so well. Whether it is the socially liberal and sanctuary city defending Rudy Giuliani, the divisive, theocratic, soft on crime and illegal immigration, and fiscally populist Mike Huckabee, or the McCain Feingold, “Gang of 14”, and pro-Amnesty John McCain, there are clear differences in the way that each of these individuals would take the Republican Party.

If you’ve found this persuasive, please do whatever you can to support Mitt Romney’s candidacy. If you’re from Iowa, please caucus for Mitt (get more information here). Winning Iowa is job one between now and January 3.

If you are not from Iowa, please stay informed by checking in here at Elect Romney in 2008 every day. Make a donation to help Mitt win the media air war. Put on a bumper sticker or put up a yard sign (get them here). And most importantly, talk with your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors about why you’re supporting Mitt Romney! Personal testimonials from trusted individuals are by far the most effective ways to gain more supporters for Mitt!

If you still have questions or remain unconvinced, leave a comment and we’ll do our best to answer your question. Or better yet, if you are also a Mitt supporter, leave a comment telling us why! Thank you for reading!

Mrs. Ann Romney & Matt

December 13th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Ann Romney, Mitt Romney

flag waving

At the end of Governor Romney’s speech last week, as he accompanied President and Mrs. Bush out of the conference room, I walked up to Matt Romney just to say hello. When I noticed that he was with his mother, I asked him if I might take a photograph of the two of them. Since I did not expect to have camera equipment at this event, I left my nice speedflash home and had to rely upon the small, built-in camera flash. I have taken about 10 photographs of Mrs. Romney at other events, but this is the best one of her in my opinion. Always beautiful of course, she was radiant at this time, five minutes after Governor Romney’s speech had ended.

There was quite a bit of emotion exhibited among many attendees present and at this very moment. Though I could not detect emotion in Mrs. Romney or Matt at this time, there was something different in their countenances. This is my favorite photograph of Mrs. Romney so far.

To Foes, Mitt Is Such A Man Of Faith, It’s Scary

Another wonderfully crafted article that I wanted to post in its’ entirety. Hats off to Joe Fitzgerald for bringing us this fine essay.

~~John Cronin~~

To foes, Mitt is such a man of faith, it’s scary

The Boston Herald ^ | 12/05/07 | Joe Fitzgerald

Mitt Romney’s problem isn’t that he’s a Mormon; his problem, in the eyes of the crowd now nipping at his heels, is that he’s serious about it.

That makes him dangerous because it makes them uncomfortable.
When you know what you believe and why, and you’re not ashamed to have it known, faith is not a position you take on an issue; it’s a position you bring to an issue, reflecting values and beliefs that have stood the test of time because you’ve discovered they’ll work when nothing else will.

Americans, from the founding of this nation, have always understood this, even though today’s wayward culture is doing its best to suppress any expression of tenets that have defined us down through the years.

In crises, however, we always return to our bedrock faith.

Remember how, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, members of Congress stood shoulder to shoulder, singing “God Bless America?”

The ACLU said nothing because at moments like that it has nothing to offer.

But expressions of faith are becoming regrettably rare in public life today, unless they’re wrapped in what’s deemed a proper context.

For instance, when trolling for votes it’s not unusual to see liberals popping up in the pulpits of black churches, liberals such as John Kerry, rambling on about the Apostle Paul before urging the congregation at Roxbury’s Twelfth Baptist Church to “run your life in a Christian way.”

That was apparently OK.

And it was certainly OK for Deval Patrick to surround himself with pastors who laid their hands upon his shoulders and showered him in prayer the day he was inaugurated. Then he took his oath upon a slave ship Bible and urged the commonwealth to become that “city on a hill,” the beautiful metaphor commonly associated with John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

It made a great photo.

Of course, if the new governor had properly attributed that quote to its original author, Jesus, who coined it during His Sermon on the Mount, there’d have been hell to pay, if you’ll pardon the expression.

Faith is a lot like fireworks; it, too, can be explosive, which is why it must be handled carefully, especially here in Massachusetts, where secularists are working overtime to separate us from our moorings. Nothing alarms them more than a man or woman who can’t be bullied and won’t be silenced.

Romney knows that all too well.

Back in 2002, late in his campaign for governor, he saw his wife, Ann, dragged across the coals of political correctness by the Democratic Party after she expressed her disapproval of gay marriage.

That’s why so many good people choose not to enter politics, even though they have much to offer.

What happened to her was undeserved and ugly, nothing less than a philosophical mugging, all because this happily married mother of five dared to let her faith inform her opinion.

Two years earlier it was Joe Lieberman’s vice presidential candidacy that had this same crowd in knots. An Orthodox Jew, Lieberman insisted America was never meant to be a secular nation, but rather a nation in which people were free to be secular.

He was absolutely right.

Hanukkah is here and Christmas is coming, meaning secularists will soon be on the warpath, even though these holidays are as symbolic of our heritage as the flag.

Dogma? No. That’s American history.

Imagine, a man of faith, comfortable with his beliefs, running for president.

No wonder Mitt has them terrified.”

Thoughts and Prayers Go Out To Matt Romney and Family

According to CNN’s Political Ticker:

Matt Romney and Fam are apparently stuck in a hotel room and have been for the past three days due to being evacuated because of the massive California wildfires. We here at Elect Romney in 2008 wish Matt and his family well, and hope and pray that his family’s home will continue to be protected from the fires.

Update from reader Patti Spencer:

Matt & family aren’t the only family members affected. Also evacuated are Mrs. Romney’s brother Jim, Jim’s daughter Rachel and her family, and other extended family members. These fires are affecting milllions of people here in Southern California. The air quality is terrible, and many schools are closed.

We definitely send out our prayers to Mrs. Romney’s brother Jim and his family as well. Jim is a great guy whom I met in Boston in June at the “America’s Calling Fundraiser”. I’ve also emailed him over the course of this blog’s existence.

Here is an image that she sent me of Lake Mission Viejo about a mile from her home.
