Mitt Romney: True, Consistent, Long-Time Conservative

Flag Waving

In the last few days, I have been reading most of the comments that many of you been leaving in this blog. First of, I wish to thank all of you who have done so; even those who presently disagree with the authors of this site or with Governor Romney himself. Those of us who strive to bring truth to the surface as we attempt to enlighten, are grateful.

Many of the comments are by new visitors. I have read comments by those who have served Fred Thompson well. Many are from Ron Paul supporters. Others, though they may not state their allegiance, may presently support Governor Huckabee, Mayor Giuliani, or Senator McCain. Many of you are contemplating support of Governor Romney. My concern is that many are stating they are afraid that if he is elected President, he will “revert to his liberal past” or words to that effect.

Mitt w/grandson and Ann

With complete respect, I offer some information. First, many comments mention that Gov. Romney is a privileged man with a privileged upbringing; the inference being that he is out of touch with the average man and woman. Those who struggle day to day to provide for their families. I will save what I would like to write here for another future post. Suffice to say that Governor Romney has spent thousands of hours in silent service (one-on-one) of children, women, and men with struggles many of us will never know (crying with them; praying with them; helping them).   That, as a lay leader in his church over many years.   If you want to get a glimpse of the real man, click here —-> MESSED UP HAIR
(keep in mind that Governor Romney has never mentioned this, nor has he ever mentioned personal service rendered to others; unlike Mike Huckabee who has done so many times).

It is simply false that GMR has ever been liberal in any way. Even the label “pro-choice”, to which GMR admitted, is misleading because his actions, his behavior, his decisions have always been on the side of life. Why am I writing this to you at 2:00 in the morning instead of sleeping? Because too many good, strong conservatives have bitten into the hook of the liberal MSM (hook, line, and sinker) to simply accept the flip/flop label altogether without doing any primary research. I must admit I did too in 2006 before I conducted my own primary research. Don’t make a fatal mistake. Conduct your own, personal, primary research on the man and you will find what I did. That he has always been a consistent conservative.

Mitt with Little Girls’ Interview

Proof? Look at this simple flyer to contrast GMR’s positions to that of Senator Kennedy as GMR ran against him in the 90s. Click here ——-> THE REAL ROMNEY (remember, this campaign flyer showing Governor Romney’s positions, is from 1994)

But don’t take my word for it or even the content of this flyer that has been around for years. Please conduct your own research. It takes time, but you will discover, as I did, that the truth about the man is altogether different than what the MSM and Governor Romney’s competitors want you to swallow without thinking.

One good place to start is the following site. Click here —–> Encyclopedia Mittanica maintained by our own Mike Laub.

Lastly, for those of you who are just now discovering Governor Romney and wish to get different perspectives from those who have conducted extensive research into the man, the statesman, the husband/father, the volunteer, click here ——> WHY ROMNEY? (be sure to scroll down; there are dozens of entries)

That’s It, Huckabee “IS” God, How Could We Have Missed It?

From Irregular Times - News Unfit for Print.

You know how Authors of books have book signings to give them greater exposure? Well, Mike Huckabee thinks that he is God himself, given that he is now autographing Holy Bibles. If you need proof look at the following picture:

Huckabee Autographs Bible

Have you ever seen anything like this before? Even when I was a kid growing up in Michigan, and my Uncle was a Minister of the local Wesleyan church and I was “saved” I was given a bible that had a to: from: page in the front of it, but there was never a signature of the local Pastor. Quite frankly I’ve seen plenty of family member’s bibles, and I’ve never seen their’s signed by people either. What I’m trying to say here, is that even the most ardent evangelicals don’t do this sort of thing. Mr. Huckabee is on the fringes of even that group. All you can say is that he’s definitely a prideful, conceited, arrogant person. How he could do this with good conscience is beyond my understanding. This coupled with his previous comments should wake people up and realize that he is the person that we should go out of our way to not vote for. Citizens of South Carolina, Nevada, Florida and beyond should see this man for who he is, a politician trying to form a theocratic Government, not a democratic one. Be-Aware, Beware, Be-Aware!

TRUTH: Governor Romney HAS ALWAYS been a Strong Supporter of Traditional Marriage and Strong Opponent of Gay Marriage

Flag Waving

Those who follow this blog know that I hold in high esteem the journalism of The Wall Street Journal. In fact, I believe it is the finest newspaper in America. But after reading two articles yesterday in the Op/Ed pages, I just about concluded that it belongs with the MSM!

I am disgusted with the media’s continued repeating of false information! Are they just lazy? What happened to honest, diligent research?

In these two articles in the Journal, they repeat as fact that Governor Romney somehow supported gay marriage. THAT IS TOTALLY, COMPLETELY, AND CATEGORICALLY FALSE! It is not some partial truth — it is altogether false! I am sick of their overall lazy writing.

Here are the two articles and cited excerpts (see truth at bottom of this post):

McCain’s Promise — It is cruel to compare the senator to most of his Republican competitors — Monday, January 7, 2008

Who can forget Mitt Romney listening in seeming amazement, a few weeks ago, as Tim Russert pressed him to explain certain extraordinary (if politically convenient) turnabout stands he’d taken on gay marriage . . .

POTOMAC WATCH — The New New Mitt — New Hampshire voters know Romney’s record better than most — That could spell trouble — BY KIMBERLEY A. STRASSEL — Monday, January 7, 2008

They include people like Bonnie (who preferred not to use her last name), an accountant who turned out in frigid temperatures to support Rudy Giuliani at an event in Salem, N.H., and who demonstrated a critical knowledge of Mr. Romney’s record: “[He] allowed gay marriages in Mass[achusetts].”

FACTS SUMMARY: Fact #1: The State of Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that the state’s constitution permits gay marriage. That ruling came when Governor Romney was governor. Governor Romney was against the Court making new law and has been against gay marriage his entire career.  Governor Romney did not sign this into law; the Court did!   Fact #2: Had Governor Romney not taken action, gay couples living outside Massachusetts could have traveled to Massachusetts to get married and their marriage contract would by law have to be accepted as legally valid in the other states. Governor Romney took action, with huge opposition and political capital, to enact laws to prevent Massachusetts becoming the “Las Vegas” of gay marriage. He succeeded!

Now, read this awesome post by David French, a lawyer and outstanding researcher (co-founder with his wife, Nancy French, of Evangelicals for Mitt) — [David was recently deployed to Iraq, 12 miles from Iran]. McCain’s Temperament

I was talking with a friend this evening. He’s a McCain supporter. Where I ended up is that I would find McCain marginally acceptable (gritting teeth now…), except that his conduct during this campaign toward Mitt, I find completely unacceptable. Tonights debate really reinforced that for me.

I found this Newsmax article by Ronald Kessler from July 5, 2006 entitled “McCain’s Out-of-Control Anger: Does He Have the Temperament to Be President?” It makes a very comprehensive case that McCain does not have the temperament to be President.

Read it all, but here are a few key excerpts:

McCain’s outbursts often erupted when other members rebuffed his requests for support during his bid in 2000 for the Republican nomination for president. A former Senate staffer recalled what happened when McCain asked for support from a fellow Republican senator on the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee.

“The senator explained that he had already committed to support George Bush,” the former Senate staffer said. “McCain said ‘f— you’ and never spoke to him again.”

**************************

“McCain used the f-word,” the former senator said. “McCain called the guy a ‘sh–head.’ The senator demanded an apology. McCain stood up and said, ‘I apologize, but you’re still a sh–head.’ That was in front of 40 to 50 Republican senators. That sort of thing happened frequently.”

**************************

But only a few news outlets, like the Phoenix New Times in Arizona and the National Journal, that ran an Associated Press story reporting McCain’s 1998 joke suggesting that Chelsea Clinton was ugly and Janet Reno and Hillary Clinton were lesbians.

“Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?” McCain said at a GOP fund-raiser in Washington. “Because Janet Reno is her father.”

There is a lot more…read the whole thing.

Senator Jim Talent: “Mitt Romney is the only Comprehensive Conservative”

flag waving

This morning, U.S. Senator Jim Talent sat down with me to express why he is such an ardent supporter of Governor Romney. A couple of things caught my attention as we began and I started asking questions related to Mike Huckabee. Senator Talent is a Evangelical Christian and is one of the strongest national leaders in promoting pro-life issues. His official title is Chairman, Domestic Policy Task Force – Mitt Romney for President, Inc. The interview was at the Romney Iowa Caucuses Headquarters in Des, Moines.

Press Release at the time Senator Talent joined Mitt Romney’s team

Senator Talent’s Wikipedia Description

The interview was conducted in a large, open space in what is effectively an office building among several tables and dozens of people making calls to get the vote out. After five minutes, about six volunteers joined us and actually helped me conduct the interview. How you ask? Well, I do not know short-hand, so first, their brief interruptions served to allow me time to better write my notes, and second, they had a couple of great questions that added to the interview!

Q: Why Romney and not other candidates such as Huckabee?

“Governor Romney is the only candidate with the whole package necessary to defeat the Democrats in the general election. The others do not have what it takes including Giuliani, Huckabee, McCain, or Thompson.

None of the other candidates are as effectively pro-life as Governor Romney. All you have to do is look at what he did as governor of Massachusetts. Nobody fought harder in the protection of traditional marriage than Governor Romney and nobody was more effective in fighting for life at the early stages than Governor Romney. Regardless of any of the candidates’ positions in the pro-life agenda, Governor Romney is the only one that will be the strong, effective pro-life leader. He is the only one who will serve the pro-life agenda in a truly effective way.

U.S. Senator Jim Talent (R), Missouri

Governor Romney is the only Republican candidate who can accomplish all of three of the following:
• Unify and mobilize the entire the Republican Party.
• Articulate an incredibly powerful message around 1) strong national defense, 2) strong families, and 3) a strong economy.
• Reach out to and connect with the center of America.

Governor Romney is the only true, comprehensive conservative among all the Republican candidates.

Q: Why Governor Romney over Huckabee?

I like to ask the simple question, “What would happen if Mike Huckabee were to be the Republican nominee?”

Think about Hillary Clinton deciding to run to the right of Huckabee on crime and taxes. Clinton could easily challenge Huckabee on any number of issues and run to the right on his past. Crime for example: Huckabee pardoned or commuted the sentences of 1,033 felons. On taxes, Huckabee raised taxes on the middle class.

As a person who has run several campaigns myself and who has run a couple of very tough campaigns, I know how important it is to have adequate resources. Mitt Romney is the only Republican candidate who has the resources to wage a long, tough, national campaign against the Democrats; all the other Republican candidates are underfunded and do not have the necessary resources.

Governor Romney has the executive management skill of all candidates and his campaign is the best run campaign of all.

Anybody who has ever met Mitt Romney knows him as a very open and genuine person. It is very touching when he is with his family.

Governor Romney is the only Republican who will make many good things happen and prevent bad things from happening.

Neither McCain nor Huckabee can mobilize all conservatives of our nation. Neither has a strong record on tax cuts. Republicans will not be able to win the general election without a strong stand on illegal immigration and Mitt Romney is the only candidate who is strong in this critical issue.

I have been a strong pro-life advocate my whole life. Certainly, we should scrutinize the pro-life position of any leader that has converted from a pro-choice position. Those of us who are national leaders (James Bopp, Jr. and Jay Seculow) in the pro-life movement have performed that scrutiny of Governor Romney and know him to be absolutely committed to the pro-life agenda in every way. He is the strongest pro-life candidate running today.

This is important. The Massachusetts Citizens for Life do not give out their highest award to just anybody and they gave theirs to Governor Romney for his tireless work in Massachusetts for life issues!

Stayed tuned for more news from Iowa. I have been working all day, but based on the buzz around me and what I have seen here today, there is a lot going on FOR Governor Romney. There are lots of really cheerful, enthusiastic volunteers all around, coming and going. I have been around very organized projects my entire career. Nothing compares to this though.

Ann Romney stopped in and went around and met many volunteers along with Mary Romney (Craig’s wife I think) and her son. Scott Romney, Mitt’s brother also stopped in and gave a little update along with Senator Talent accompanied by cheers. Apparently tonight there is a rally for supporters. When you get a chance, look for updates from Jason Bonham over at My Man Mitt who is embedded with Governor Romney’s press corp as they fly around Iowa. I had dinner with Jason last night and he was pretty excited about today.

Governor Romney’s New — COMPLETELY POSITIVE AD — For New Hampshire?

flag waving

This recommendation to the Romney for President, Inc. campaign team is not mine. It was mentioned to me by Brent Koch, a friend, and one of our newest writers at this blog.

Brent just called and is mad about the cheap shots McCain is taking at Governor Romney: 1) McCain’s whining about the factual, truthful, and contrasting ads, 2) McCain’s irrelevant personal attack ads, and 3) McCain’s refusal to refute the facts presented to the people of NH by Governor Romney.

Brent’s recommendation?

That Governor Romney create a 30-second TV ad exclusively for New Hampshire that runs often, every day until January 8th. I TOTALLY love this idea of Brent’s. Seriously. If Governor Romney were to play this ad endlessly, it would cause John McCain to start dancing as if he were on hot coals. This clip is too long to play in its entirety, but you could make the most awesome 30-second spot that matches McCain at his level. What do you think?

Count how many times McCain mentions “honesty” and “integrity” in direct reference to Governor Romney.

Why is this brilliant? McCain’s ads are pulling video clips from old archives; this one above matches him on that front. This proposed 30-second ad would be completely positive; it does not bashe McCain in any way and it is all in McCain’s own words and passionate words at that! If played often in NH, it would create media buzz forcing McCain to answer it; it is the best way to put McCain on the defensive.

Think about it. McCain would be smoked out of his smug fox hole to refute his own words and angle to and fro to explain why he was wrong at the time.

Huckabee Out and Out Lies About Who’s Advising Him

“HE HAS AGREED TO BE A PART OF THE GROUP”
Gov. Huckabee Claims Foreign Policy Advisers Who Aren’t Advising Him
No Laughing Matter: A serious look at Gov. Mike Huckabee’s record and policy beyond the one-liners.

  • Gov. Mike Huckabee: “And the ultimate thing is, I may not be the expert that some people are on foreign policy, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.” (WABC Radio’s “Imus In The Morning,” 12/4/07)
  • National Review: “The Holiday Inn Express Candidate.” “In sum, conservatives should have worries about the depth and soundness of Mike Huckabee’s foreign-policy views. And staying at a Holiday Inn Express is not going to be enough to allay them.” (Editorial, “The Holiday Inn Express Candidate,” National Review, 12/10/07)

Confronted With Misstatements On Foreign Policy, Gov. Huckabee Insists He Is Authentic And Honest:

  • Gov. Huckabee Says That People Are Looking For “Authenticity” And “Honesty.” NBC’s LESTER HOLT: “But can you afford those kind of misstatements when the spotlight is on you and people are looking for credible foreign policy credentials?” GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: “What they’re looking for is authenticity, they’re looking for honesty.” (NBC’s “Today,” 12/29/07)
  • Yet, Gov. Huckabee Continues To Insist He Is Being Advised By Former Ambassador John Bolton:
On Thursday, Gov. Huckabee Said That Ambassador John Bolton Had Agreed To Help Him Formulate Foreign Policy. “At a Thursday evening news conference, Huckabee said, ‘I’ve corresponded with John Bolton, who’s agreed to work with us on developing foreign policy.’” (Lisa Lerer, “Huckabee’s Foreign Affairs Lapses,” The Politico, 12/29/07)
  • On Friday Morning, Gov. Huckabee Said That He Had Spoken With Amb. Bolton About Foreign Policy. “On Friday morning, Huckabee listed former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton as someone with whom he either has ’spoken or will continue to speak.’” (Lisa Lerer, “Huckabee’s Foreign Affairs Lapses,” The Politico, 12/29/07)
  • By Friday Evening, Amb. Bolton Said He Hadn’t Spoken With Huckabee, Nor Agreed To Be His Adviser. “Bolton, however, has a different view. ‘I’d be happy to speak with Huckabee, but I haven’t spoken with him yet,’ said Bolton, now a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington. ‘I’m not an official or unofficial adviser to anyone,’ said Bolton, who mentioned he’d had conversations with other Republican candidates but declined to name any names.” (Lisa Lerer, “Huckabee’s Foreign Affairs Lapses,” The Politico, 12/29/07)
  • On Saturday Afternoon, Gov. Huckabee Was Still Claiming That Amb. Bolton Had Agreed To Be His Adviser. REPORTER: “Governor, you mentioned John Bolton as someone who is helping you to shape your foreign policy proposals. He says he hasn’t had communications or conversations with you. And he wasn’t the only person who you mentioned in your list of people you have talked to, to get advice from, who have said they haven’t spoken to you. Can you clear that up?” GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: “Well, I had an e-mail exchange with John Bolton, and he has agreed to be a part of the group. He has not endorsed me. he has not indicated he would be supporting my candidacy, but he is one of many people who would be willing to have conversations. And we did have that e-mail exchange.” (Gov. Mike Huckabee, Press Conference, 12/29/07; YouTube)

  • Gov. Huckabee Also Wrongly Claimed Former National Security Adviser Richard Allen Is Advising Him:
“Huckabee Said He Had Also Spoken With… Former National Security Adviser Richard Allen.” “Huckabee said he had also spoken with former State Department official Richard Haass (now president of the Council on Foreign Relations); military analyst Ken Allard; former national security adviser Richard Allen; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich; Frank Gaffney, founder of the Center for Security Policy, a conservative think tank; and a ‘number of military personnel.’” (Lisa Lerer, “Huckabee’s Foreign Affairs Lapses,” The Politico, 12/29/07)
  • Yet, Allen Also Says He Has Not Spoken With Gov. Huckabee. “Reached via e-mail, Allen said an intermediary asked him to speak with Huckabee, but he hadn’t yet agreed. ‘I’m gradually getting older, but am fully capable of recalling with whom I have spoken,’ said the former Nixon and Reagan foreign policy campaign adviser.” (Lisa Lerer, “Huckabee’s Foreign Affairs Lapses,” The Politico, 12/29/07)

Huckabee and Rudy made the Top 10…

…most wanted corrupt politicians.

Here’s what they say:

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY): Giuliani came under fire in late 2007 after it was discovered the former New York mayor’s office “billed obscure city agencies for tens of thousands of dollars in security expenses amassed during the time when he was beginning an extramarital relationship with future wife Judith Nathan in the Hamptons…” ABC News also reported that Giuliani provided Nathan with a police vehicle and a city driver at taxpayer expense. All of this news came on the heels of the federal indictment on corruption charges of Giuliani’s former Police Chief and business partner Bernard Kerik, who pleaded guilty in 2006 to accepting a $165,000 bribe in the form of renovations to his Bronx apartment from a construction company attempting to land city contracts.

Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR): Governor Huckabee enjoyed a meteoric rise in the polls in December 2007, which prompted a more thorough review of his ethics record. According to The Associated Press: “[Huckabee’s] career has also been colored by 14 ethics complaints and a volley of questions about his integrity, ranging from his management of campaign cash to his use of a nonprofit organization to subsidize his income to his destruction of state computer files on his way out of the governor’s office.” And what was Governor Huckabee’s response to these ethics allegations? Rather than cooperating with investigators, Huckabee sued the state ethics commission twice and attempted to shut the ethics process down.

I don’t know this group, but you can’t argue with what they’ve outlined above.

Exclusive: Huckabee’s Innocent Question? Not Quite.

December 21st, 2007 | 7 Comments | Posted in Ethics, Evangelicals, Mike Huckabee

Gotta love the Internet. While I was browsing through some old coverage of the Values Voters Summit I ran across a clip that looked strangely familiar. I did a little bit of digging and BINGO, it turns out that Huckabee’s claim that he just tossed out a completely impromptu question “rooted in genuine ignorance” of Mormons to the New York Times (no pre-meditation here folks) becomes a bit hard to believe. Judge for yourself – as far as I know this is a world exclusive.

How many times have we seen in politics where the cover-up is worse than the crime? It seems that when confronted with a problem Huckabee has a pattern of convoluted explanations, misinformation, and downright deception in his attempt to explain away the issue. For example:

ISSUE: In 1992 Huckabee made it known that he FAVORED isolating AIDS patients and OPPOSED increased funding for AIDS research. In defending his position Huckabee stated recently that, “In 1992 we weren’t clear how AIDS was transmitted.”

OOPS: In 1984 Ryan White was diagnosed with AIDS and garnered national media attention for the issue. By 1988 the CDC, the NIH, and Surgeon General C. Edward Coop had made clear public policy statements and even sent information to every household explaining that you could not contract AIDS from “kissing, tears, sweat, or saliva.”

ISSUE: Huckabee said that his 1033 clemencies in 10 years “was in line with other governors who have served the state.”

OOPS: Bill Clinton, Frank White and Tucker granted 507 clemencies in the 17 1/2 years they served as governor.

ISSUE: Huckabee said he had proposed to make children of illegal aliens eligible for Arkansas scholarships if they “had been in our schools their entire school life.”

OOPS: Actually, the proposal required only three years in Arkansas schools.

ISSUE: When confronted with a YouTube video in which he called for tax increases as Arkansas Governor he said that the tax hikes were in response to “a supreme court order that we had to fund education at a higher level.”

OOPS: Fox news investigated and found that not to be true. In fact the tax hikes were to cover a general revenue shortfall as a result of increased state spending.

ISSUE: On numerous occasions in debate and on the stump Governor Huckabee cites as justification for raising the gas and fuel tax the supposed fact that 80% of Arkansans voted to support it.

OOPS: On April 1, 1999 Huckabee signed the gas and fuel tax hikes into law. The tax hikes began taking effect that day. On June 15, 1999 (some two and a half months later) 80% of Arkansas voters approved a bond issue, which DID NOT include the gas tax increases.

ISSUE: Governor Huckabee’s son, David, was involved in the hanging, cutting of the throat, and stoning to death of a stray dog while employed as a counselor at a scout camp. He was fired from the camp because of the incident.

OOPS: John Baily, who was the Director of the Arkansas state police (the top law enforcement job in Arkansas) said that he was pressured by Governor Huckabee’s Chief of Staff and then the Governor’s family lawyer to write a letter to the prosecutor saying that the state police would not investigate the incident, but he refused. Baily claims that he was later fired because Huckabee said, “I’ve lost confidence in your ability to do your job.” One reason cited was “I couldn’t get you to help me with my son when I had that problem.”

OOPS: The head of the Arkansas FBI office said at the time that without question Huckabee was interfering with a state investigation.

ISSUE: Huckabee claimed that his son was being unfairly singled out because such animal cruelty cases were not regularly prosecuted. This argument appeared in an article in the Arkansas Gazette on April 27, 2007 (reporting on a separate incident in which David Huckabee was stopped for taking a gun through airport security).

OOPS: Prosecuting Attorney Tim Williamson of Mena, Arkansas said cruelty to animals is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail. “We regularly charge cruelty to animals. That’s kind of my pet peeve,” he said.

ISSUE: Governor Huckabee was asked if he had pressured the parole board to release Dumond. Governor Huckabee: “No. I did not. Let me categorically say that I did not. And it’s really interesting, if people want to really look into that record.”

OOPS: According to Murray Waas’ prize-winning expose of Huckabee’s clemency record entitled “Special handling: How the Huckabee administration worked to free rapist Wayne Dumond” new sources, including an advisor to Gov. Mike Huckabee, have told the Arkansas Times that Huckabee and a senior member of his staff exerted behind-the-scenes influence to bring about the parole of rapist Wayne Dumond, who Missouri authorities say raped and killed a woman there shortly after his parole.

What do you call it when you fire someone for not doing you a favor?

December 18th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in 2008, Aberrant, Arkansas, Crime, Ethics, Mike Huckabee, Videos

How about when you fire the Director of State Police for not “helping” with the cover up of a grotesque act by your son?

What do you call that? (”Corrupt” comes to mind as an appropriate description)

Some people feel that this story is about David Huckabee’s freakish behavior. One can argue the extent to which that is relevant here (I personally would prefer not to have this kind of drama around the White House or representing the Republican Party).

What hopefully is clear, however, is that the real story is the cover up and firing of a senior law enforcement official for playing ball. Can you imagine what Huck might do if he gets a hold of the Justice Department?

My Dad’s take on this NBC News Report with Lisa Myers

I was watching this report with my father tonight while I sat there and visited him with my daughter, and it literally made my Dad walk away and he threw his hand down at the TV. It disgusted him that much. Prior to my involvement with the Romney campaign (i.e. this blog, and various trips) he would have been solidly in McCain’s camp, but my Dad knows Romney’s character. He’s read what he wrote in my book, the various letters and post cards, and the way he’s treated me at meetings with him. Not to mention the fact that he cares about my kids so much. To people like my Dad those are signs of true character. Sure, he has his disagreements with him, but my Dad sees Romney as “the real deal”.

It’s truly sickening that Huck chose to commute these people’s sentences for religious reasons. Reeks of out and out discrimination, I guess he’d never commute a jew, they aren’t going to have that “coming to Jesus” moment.

Huckabee - 1023

Mike Huckabee’s Supporters would have Rejected Ronald Reagan Today

flag waving

This Op/Ed article by Noonan covers both Huckabee and Clinton. Both halves are great reading. To read the entire article online, click here:

PEGGY NOONAN — The Pulpit and the Potemkin Village — Would Reagan survive in today’s GOP? And is Mrs. Clinton in for a fall this winter? — Friday, December 14, 2007

Noonan makes some great points here regarding Ronald Reagan. In the religious standard Evangelicals seem to have erected this election season, Ronald Reagan most certainly would not have measured up. Aside from his worldly, Hollywood lifestyle most of his life, his father was of a religion many Evangelicals also dubbed “a cult” (I know this because I have seen their literature and Evangelicals have said as much to me). I mean really; there is no way that Ronald Reagan, the product of a father who belonged to a cult could have been elected President today.

But Jimmy Carter could be elected and probably would be by the religious zealots who blindly support Mike Huckabee. Come to think of it, “Duckabee” (the name Laura Ingraham gave Huckabee yesterday when he evaded a question she posed to him on immigration) is much more like Jimmy Carter than he is Ronald Reagan.

Noonan’s rhetorical questions posed in this piece are interesting and very provocative indeed:

What is happening in Iowa is no longer boring but big, and may prove huge.

The Republican race looks–at the moment–to be determined primarily by one thing, the question of religious faith. In my lifetime faith has been a significant issue in presidential politics, but not the sole determinative one. Is that changing? If it is, it is not progress.

Mike Huckabee is in the lead due, it appears, to voter approval of the depth and sincerity of his religious beliefs as lived out in his ministry as an ordained Southern Baptist. He flashes “Christian leader” over his picture in commercials; he asserts his faith is “mainstream”; his surrogates speak of Mormonism as “strange” and “definitely a factor.” Mr. Huckabee said this summer that a candidate’s faith is “subject to question,” “part of the game.”

He tells the New York Times that he doesn’t know a lot about Mitt Romney’s faith, but isn’t it the one in which Jesus and the devil are brothers? This made me miss the old days of Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man,” in which a candidate started a whispering campaign that his opponent’s wife was a thespian.

Mr. Huckabee has of course announced that he apologizes to Mr. Romney, which allowed him to elaborate on his graciousness and keep the story alive. He should have looked abashed. Instead he betrayed the purring pleasure of “a Christian with four aces,” in Mark Twain’s words.

Christian conservatives have been rising, most recently, for 30 years in national politics, since they helped elect Jimmy Carter. They care about the religious faith of their leaders, and their interest is legitimate. Faith is a shaping force. Lincoln got grilled on it. But there is a sense in Iowa now that faith has been heightened as a determining factor in how to vote, that such things as executive ability, professional history, temperament, character, political philosophy and professed stands are secondary, tertiary.

But they are not, and cannot be. They are central. Things seem to be getting out of kilter, with the emphasis shifting too far.

The great question: Does it make Mr. Huckabee, does it seal his rise, that he has acted in such a manner? Or does it damage him? Republicans on the ground in Iowa and elsewhere will decide that. And in the deciding they may be deciding more than one man’s future. They may be deciding if Republicans are becoming a different kind of party.

I wonder if our old friend Ronald Reagan could rise in this party, this environment. Not a regular churchgoer, said he experienced God riding his horse at the ranch, divorced, relaxed about the faiths of his friends and aides, or about its absence. He was a believing Christian, but he spent his adulthood in relativist Hollywood, and had a father who belonged to what some saw, and even see, as the Catholic cult. I’m just not sure he’d be pure enough to make it in this party. I’m not sure he’d be considered good enough.

In the second half of Noonan’s Op/Ed piece she writes of the Clinton’s and it is all good. Two small paragraphs from that half that say it all:

It appears not to be working. Might it be that they don’t miss Bill as much as everyone thought? That they don’t actually want Bill back in the White House?

Maybe. But maybe it’s this. Maybe they’d love to have him back in the White House. Maybe they just don’t want him to bring her. Maybe they miss the Cuckoo’s Nest and they’d love having Jack Nicholson’s McMurphy running through the halls. Maybe they just don’t miss Nurse Ratched. Does she have to come?
