Don’t Do it Dobson

Apparently “Dr.” James Dobson of Schmuckabee ilk “might” endorse John McCain. Not that I’m the biggest fan of McCain (and will only vote for him with Romney on the ticket), but I would hate to see John McCain have to accept this fool’s endorsement. Just the fact that it’s a might to begin with is enough to show this man the door.

Dallas Morning News Goes Coo Coo (and I don’t mean for Cocoa Puffs)

This just in from CNN Dallas Morning News: Huckabee good investment in GOP’s future.

All that I can do is laugh.

From the article:

Though Sen. John McCain of Arizona is the presumptive nominee and “it is mathematically impossible” for Huckabee to pull ahead in delegates, Huckabee “remains our choice for the GOP nomination,” the newspaper’s editorial board wrote, just two days before the state’s primary.

This is not the first time the paper has endorsed Huckabee. Last month, it called him a “a progressive conservative with a pastor’s heart.”

And in December, it called him “decent, principled and empathetic to the views and concerns of others — an antidote to the power-mad partisanship that has led U.S. politics to a dispiriting standstill.”

Further down:

In the piece published Sunday, the newspaper’s editorial board wrote, “True, a Huckabee vote today won’t do much to determine the 2008 GOP presidential candidate.”

It added, “But it’s a good investment in the Republican Party’s future.”

Sorry DMN, but the Huck isn’t going to come close to McCain and in the end McCain will have almost the same (in terms of numbers) delegates as the Huck pardoned from Prison. What a foolish decision on you paper’s part. It just shows the complete and utter evangelical bent, especially in the words they used.

“a progressive conservative with a pastor’s heart.”

Awwww, now doesn’t that just give ya the warm and fuzzies all around???

I Ann Marie Curling following Gov. Romney’s Wishes Endorse John McCain for President of the United States.

You all will have your opinions, and I respect them. But, inasmuch as I don’t like it (and I don’t have to like it) I am endorsing John McCain for President of the United States. I’m following “My Man Mitt’s” decision to do so. I’ve followed him along for the past 2 1/2 yrs, and if there’s one thing that stands out with him it’s trust. I trust Gov. Romney implicitly, and he made this decision so we should follow him. I know for many of us it’s probably the hardest thing that we’ve had to do in a long time, but shouldn’t we follow our man? Shouldn’t we do as he’s doing? He’s right, we need for our party to come together right now. The Democrats are still fighting, and probably won’t have their nominee for a while now. Why not get off on a good footing so that we can retain control of the White House. There will be other elections down the road. Gov. Romney isn’t going anywhere, and we’ll be that much better prepared next go round. I know I’ve made some no so flattering comments about Mr. McCain, but Gov. Romney and Senator McCain both realize that Primary Campaigns are hard nosed and can get ugly. Now is the time for all of us to come together and unite, and that’s why I’m putting this post here. I hope that you follow Gov. Romney’s example and do the same.

What’dya know, James Dobson Endorses Huckabee

From The Associated Press

My question is…

What took you so long Mr. Dobson? I mean come on, Huck and you are a perfect match made in Heaven! Both of you are radically right leaning people…I can’t believe that you ever mentioned looking for a 3rd Party Candidate, when Huck was right there in front of your face with his same exact values.

Yawn…next…

John McCain: “…desperately trying to change the subject” by David Keene of the ACU

David Keene of the American Conservative Union (ACU) has a great article entitled “Double-Talk Jeopardy” discussing McCain’s dishonesty in the days leading up to the Floriday Primary. David has endorsed Mitt Romney. Read the whole thing, but here are a couple choice quotes below:

Most politicians who identify their interests with the national interest eventually conclude that whatever they have to do to advance those interests is justifiable; that in their case, the end almost always justifies the means. Such politicians can be dangerous and John McCain is just such a politician. In McCain’s world everything is personal: to disagree with him marks one not just as wrong, but as almost definitionally evil.

Stories of McCain’s intolerance abound in Washington. He’s attacked his fellow senators personally when they have had the temerity to actually disagree with him. Indeed, one Republican senator told me several years ago that he was confronted by an enraged McCain after voting against a minor amendment in committee and dressed down in “language that would be inappropriate in a barroom, let alone in the Senate.”

It is these qualities that concern many who know McCain best. Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran (R) is universally liked and admired by his colleagues. He’s known McCain for decades, and while he’s no camera hog, his colleagues listen when he speaks. In endorsing Romney over McCain in what many now view as a two-man race, Cochran said of McCain, “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine.”

RIEHL: “Why I Am Endorsing Romney Now”

February 2nd, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in 2008, Barack Obama, Endorsement, Mitt Romney

Flag Waving

Sent to us by reader LISARC. This is great commentary from Riehl World View:

Why I Am Endorsing Romney Now - Obama A Strong Second Choice

Romney has realized the base sees him as the consensus candidate, flaws and all. He spoke as an outsider crashing the gate. That’s precisely what the Republican Party needs in the Fall, especially given a decade or two of dissembling conservatism and corrupt DC pols. Romney has proved to be the most analytical, yet nimble campaigner in a bizarre primary year. His campaign has displayed a competence unmatched by any other, despite how various state-wide votes, often counting on moderates and all but Northeastern liberals, turned out. Such competence was not the case with McCain. He bankrupted his campaign early. Why should we trust him to not do the same with the nation?

More than any other candidate, Romney has displayed a determination to win while playing politics; yet, stopping short of slinging mud, or outright lies. After Florida, John McCain cannot say the same. Does character no longer matter to conservatives? Have we come to that? If so, I’ll pass.

Mitt Romney’s family life and moral grounding epitomize traditional Republican values. There is no media-whoring maverick in his past. Since when has being loved by the media, or being a contrarian - a maverick - figured into anyone’s conservative bona fides? It hasn’t and it never will; that alone should tell you much.

My first choice for President in 2008 is Mitt Romney and my second choice is Barack Obama. And that would not be an anti-McCain vote. Like Romney, Obama is a man of vision and character and electing the first black president would ultimately do more to pry away black and other minority voters from a decadent American liberalism, than would anything else.

Certainly it would do more in that regard than anything any Conservative could hope to say - media darling, or not. One could no longer make the argument that America is racist, or unfair. Not when a black man has risen to the highest office in the land. And he will have done it without the need for some futuristic utopia which the Left insists we need. He would be a self-made man and his own worst enemy when arguing for a socialist-like, or welfare state. Also, multiculturalism cannot ultimately exist within a nation in which all races are seen as one. Has that not always been a conservative value and vision? I would assert it has.

My long-term goal is and will always be the furtherance of solid conservative principles that no more require modernization, than the Constitution itself. And I vote for people and to win. Right now, there are two people worthy of my support in this race. Both decisions would represent my belief in conservative principles and a forwarding of the Movement’s agenda, long-term.

Mitt Romney is the only candidate on the Republican side capable of truly uniting the base and going on to win in the Fall. I support him for his competence, class and, yes, his consistency over a life well led, much of it not on the public dime, or planning and plotting inside a failed Washington as to how he, but not genuinely conservative principles, can move ahead.

I strongly encourage my conservative friends and colleagues to rally behind Mitt Romney for the very hard fight just up ahead. We are fighting an establishment just as short-sighted, as it has been corrupt.

Whether it’s helping to raise money, make phone calls, or get out the vote, Mitt Romney as the last man standing anyone can honestly call a loyal conservative needs our help. Win, or lose in the Fall, if Romney doesn’t get our support and the Republican nod, conservatives will be left homeless under McCain. No president has not reverted to being himself once in office. The Party will be over, as it were. And as we don’t support government subsidies, a boot-strap re-building on our own will cost conservatism much. Yet, we must prepare for that eventuality, too - should it emerge. That fate for conservatives and the Republican Party can be avoided. It is not too late.

For now, we must pursue victory and we must do it behind the one candidate who best typifies our cause. And that’s why I am supporting Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination, not as a front-runner - as an establishment crony like a Governor Crist might do - but now when he and Reagan conservatism need our help the most.

In short, society can, should and will move on. Laugh if you will, but we do need change. And the Republican Party needs it as much as anyone else. The choice the Republican establishment now has to make, is - do conservatives move forward with them, or without?

The Endorsements are Coming In

Three great endorsements today, one from Laura Ingraham, one from Rep. Lynn Westmoreland from Georgia, and one from former Pennsylvania Senator, Rick Santorum.  Sen. Santorum worked with McNasty in the Senate for 12 years:

To nobody’s surprise, Santorum’s for Romney

Posted by BRETT LIEBERMAN, Of The Patriot-News February 01, 2008 12:43PM

When his fiscal conservative credentials were under attack, then U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., rolled out U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for campaign stops around the state.

McCain vouched for him at three events including the Army-Navy Game Gala.

“[L]et’s not underestimate what Rick represents in the United States Senate, said McCain. “He represents family values, he represents commitment to family and America, and he represents what — in my view — is the next generation of leadership in the Republican Party. So there’s a lot at stake in this election. We can and will win this election, and it’s important that we do so. It’s important that we send a signal to America that this is the kind commitment and leadership that deserves to remain in the United States Senate.”

But after the election, Santorum made no secret of his disdain for McCain in the Senate.

I served 12 years with him, six years in the Senate as one of the leaders of the Senate, trying to put together the conservative agenda, and almost at every turn, on domestic policy, John McCain was not only against us, but leading the charge on the other side,” Santorum said on Mark Levin’s syndicated radio show.

Like many conservatives, Santorum has been critical of the McCain-Feingold Act campaign finance reform legislation.

He goes further on Hugh Hewitt’s show, saying that McCain won’t win the GOP base and was on the wrong side of the immigration issue.

“John McCain was the guy who was working with Ted Kennedy to drive it down our throats, and lectured us repeatedly about how xenophobic we were, lectured us, us being the Republican conference, about how wrong we were on this, how we were on the wrong side of history,” Santorum said on the immigration debate.

Endorsing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for president today, Santorum said, “Conservatives can no longer afford to stand on the sidelines in this election, and Gov. Romney is the candidate who will stand up for the conservative principles that we hold dear.”
And today he told Laura Ingraham that Romney’s the only one who understands the “war here at home.
Not exactly a huge surprise for Santorum given his choices at this point in the campaign, but newsworthy nonetheless at a critical time for Romney before the “Super Tuesday primaries in 22 states.

Conservative Sean Hannity Endorses Governor Romney

February 1st, 2008 | 13 Comments | Posted in 2008, Endorsement, John McCain, Mitt Romney

Flag Waving

Do any of you find it amazing that John McCain will not accept invitations to speak on conservative talk radio? Laura Ingraham has invited him many times and each time he says, “No way!” Why is that? If he is so conservative, why won’t he allow himself to be interviewed by radio hosts that literally have multi-millions of visitors. Giuliani, Thompson, and Governor Romney all accepted interviews on all the major conservative talk shows. Why not McCain?

Sean Hannity:

“I’ll tell you right now, and I’ve not announced this, but I will be voting for Mitt Romney in this campaign. It’s the first time I’ve stated it publicly. I’ll state it now.”

Former California Political Director, Fred ‘08 Endorses Romney

More good news from our friends who supported Fred Thompson in his run for the Republican nomination. If you haven’t seen the YouTube clip of FT hammering Huckabee on the alleged demise of “the Reagan coalition” you are missing the quintessential defense of modern conservatism.

~~John Cronin~~

From the Desk of Richard Rios
California Political Director, Fred ‘08

Friends and supporters of Senator Thompson;

By now you have been inundated with the news of Senator Thompson’s decision to not pursue the office of the President of the United States. I have received many emails and phone calls asking what the next steps for Senator Thompson are and who is the best candidate to
support?

As far as Senator Thompson plans I cannot answer for him. Nor do I have any information that indicates what he will do next. But this is what I do know.
The conservative movement is based on several tenants. These include fiscal conservatism, social conservatism and support of a strong military. These principles that are the base of the Reagan coalition live beyond any single candidate or presidential term. The soundness of their doctrine will continue to provide a light for generations to come.

With the departure of Senator Thompson we as conservatives must focus on who is promoting those principles we hold dear and put aside any bias we have held in the past or hear in the main stream media. It is my belief and opinion that Governor Romney is the only candidate in the race that can carry that torch.

I have not accepted any position with any campaign. I offer you this assessment and ask that you join me in supporting Governor Romney as a fellow grass roots leader.

On Monday, January 22nd, we saw near 500 drop in the DOW and the week continued to show volatility in world markets. China has effectively manipulated the valuation of the dollar by mass liquidating US Treasuries. Our leaders have publically stated that we are either in or headed for a recession. Governor Romney is by far the best Presidential candidate on either side of the aisle who can address the economic perils ahead. He brings years of successful business Executive experience understanding a balance sheet. Some of the other candidates attribute their success political achievements. This is not difficult to do when the government can just raise taxes or print more money. We need someone who understands finances like you and me. That when the checking account is empty you stop writing checks.

Governor Romney believes in the sanctity of family. He supports a constitutional amendment that defines marriage between one man and one woman. He also believes that Roe v. Wade should be overturned to protect the unborn. Many of you may have the same concerns I had in the past regarding Governor Romney’s prior stand on these issues. As a Christian, I do believe in second chances for those who see the errors of their ways. I believe Governor Romney realizes that his past statements were wrong and is working hard to make right the injustice being done against the unborn.

Would I prefer to have a consistent stand on one of the most crucial social issues we face? Yes. I ask that you look into yourself. Is there anyone of us that can honestly say they have never changed a position for the better when the facts were presented to us? I don’t think so.

Governor Romney’s support has never wavered. He has outlined a plan to increase our military personnel and give them the weapons support they need to get the job done. A CEO knows how to let competent leaders do their job and Governor Romney will let the Generals and Field Commanders do their job without the political posturing we have seen in the past.

Finally, one last note for this endorsement. As grassroots activists we have seen the affects that McCain-Feingold has had on our ability to freely speak and support our candidates. Governor Romney has publically stated he wants to repeal that law and support the first amendment. The last thing we need is a candidate who thinks stifling the voice of the American people is a good thing and puts his name on it.

Please visit www.mittromney.com and look at the issues section. Make an informed and comprehensive decision.

Best wishes and thank you for all your support in the past promoting and advancing the conservative platform.

This represents the views and opinions of Richard Rios and should not be considered an endorsement of the Fred Thompson presidential campaign or other members of the California for Thompson team.

Mr. Romney For The GOP

January 27th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in 2008, Connecticut, Endorsement, February 5th, Hartford Courant
…if you throw him a knotty problem that needs to be solved by Friday, he’s the candidate we’d bet on to have it done by Tuesday.

The Hartford Courant, from the Editors:

Mitt Romney’s record while governor of Massachusetts was much better than he’s given credit for. It’s the record of an achiever.

The Republican governor led the fight to control sprawl and bring more affordable housing to the Bay State with groundbreaking laws and a dramatic reorganization of state agencies. In 2003, he combined transportation, housing, environmental and energy agencies into a super-agency, charged it with stopping runaway suburban growth, then appointed a Democrat environmentalist to run it. By comparison, Connecticut is still nibbling around the edges of smart growth.

The former venture-capital company CEO and rescuer of the 2002 Winter Olympics also worked with the Democratic legislature to stop job losses and reduce a projected $3 billion budget shortfall. He managed to balance his state’s budget without sales or income tax or gas increases. And he streamlined other government agencies — all while maintaining the state’s huge accomplishments from a decade of education reforms that put Massachusetts ahead of Connecticut on many academic achievement scores.

Though some in his party abhorred it as “socialized medicine,” Mr. Romney backed a bold state plan to cover the uninsured that required every Massachusetts citizen to have health insurance but provided aid for those who couldn’t afford it. His business school case-method approach to health care — let states experiment; see who comes up with the best ideas — is the most likely to yield ingenious and flexible solutions to an increasingly worrisome national issue.

Mr. Romney’s shifts on his views on abortion, stem-cell research, same-sex marriage and other issues are indeed troubling: Conservatives as well as liberals are unsure of what to expect from him if elected. But those who have worked with him praise his openness, his easy ability to transcend narrow political ideology to get a job done. And presidential candidates often pay tribute to the traditional wings of their parties at primary time. Mr. Romney’s chief rival, Arizona Sen. John McCain, has pandered as well in, for example, changing his position on the Bush tax cuts, which he once voted against and now wants extended.

We part company with Mr. McCain on his opposition to abortion and his support of the war in Iraq, among other things. But he has earned The Courant’s admiration as a campaign-finance reformer, a voice of decency in the treatment of prisoners of war and a heroic maverick who will cross the aisle to achieve bipartisan compromise on issues such as immigration.

With the economy gaining on the war in Iraq as the leading worry for Americans, however, Mr. Romney’s real-world grasp of economic principles, his real-world successes on both sides of the public/private-sector aisle, are increasingly valuable assets.

Mark Twain said about Wagner that his music “is better than it sounds.” Mr. Romney is a better leader than his perplexing campaign performance makes him out to be. He doesn’t have the smooth-talking populist appeal of Sen. Mike Huckabee or the years of working on public policy that Sen. McCain does. But if you throw him a knotty problem that needs to be solved by Friday, he’s the candidate we’d bet on to have it done by Tuesday.

He’s believable when he promises to bring “innovation and transformation” to Washington. He has done it.

He is The Courant’s choice for the Feb. 5 Republican presidential primary.

Ed Morrissey (Captain’s Quarters Blog) endorses Mitt Romney

H/T: Hugh Hewitt

Morrissey is a leading Conservative blogger and a great blogosphere get. Choice excerpts:

…the Republican should have demonstrated success in executive management in both private and public sectors. This eliminates everyone except Romney and Rudy. John McCain wants to make the case that his experience as squadron leader qualifies, and it does demonstrate leadership, but not executive experience. Both Rudy and Romney have led entire organizations in both the public and private sectors, with Romney getting the best in this area. They have had the buck stop at their desk. Both Rudy and Romney have transformed failing entities (New York City and the Salt Lake City Olympics). McCain led 400 men, but he answered to commanders above him at several levels while doing so, and I have yet to see an argument for transformation under McCain’s leadership.

Why is this important? The Democrats have no one who can match that experience. Putting McCain or especially Fred Thompson against the Democratic nominee, whether that is Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, effectively cedes the inexperience argument. It argues that Republicans consider resumes to be irrelevant, and that will have us fighting with one hand tied behind our backs.

Third, we face a tough election if the economy turns south, even mildly. We saw this in 1992 and lost when Bill Clinton successfully convinced people that he had the best ideas for a turnaround. We have one candidate who has undeniable success in the global markets, who understands them and the players that run them. Romney gives us an advantage as the nominee that none of the others can match in this regard.
