McCain seeks to calm angry supporters

Here’s a very basic political question for you. Does John McCain know what the hell he’s doing?

Judging from the reaction he is getting from his own supporters, I’d say the answer is no.

We are witnessing the closing weeks of an epic presidential campaign that has seen history made on several fronts. Mitt Romney, the only LDS candidate to run a nationwide campaign for President. My apologies to any other LDS candidate that may have had a presidential campaign, I am just not aware of any others that ran a major national campaign.

Hillary Clinton, the first woman to run a major national campaign for the Presidency. Barack Obama, the first African-American to run for the presidency. Sarah Palin, the first woman to be picked to run as VP for the Republican Party. John McCain the first former POW to run for the presidency.

As much as I admire Sen. McCain for his service to his country, I have to say that I am mystified by his campaign strategy. Writing off Michigan, a swing state with 17 electoral votes. A state that might have been winnable with the right message. A message of how the American auto industry would finally get a level playing field with some of it’s competitors by having a candidate that promoted cutting the federal corporate tax rate, instead of dampening the enthusiasm of his crowds by lecturing them on a bogus civility. I am not advocating running a dirty campaign, but as that old political saying goes: “Politics ain’t beanbag.”

Sen. McCain has found himself in the unenviable position of being booed by his own crowds. I can fully sympathize with that crowd in Minnesota the other day that wanted him to bring the fight to Obama on his association with radical Bill Ayers. Why on earth the McCain campaign let this slide until less than three weeks remaining in the campaign remains a puzzlement to me. Bringing it up now smacks of desperation, not quite the message you want to send to the troops in the field. But if you are not going to hammer Obama on his job-killing tax proposals, dangerous foreign policy proposals and his general affection for leftist solutions to whatever ails the country at any given point in time, at least the Ayers connection is something conservative crowds can relate to.

The reason McCain is so out of touch with conservative crowds is because he is not a conservative. This won’t come as a surprise to most of you, but for those newcomers to politics, they may not have been engaged in the process long enough to remember President Reagan and for the college aged readers of this site, they weren’t even born during his administration. If all they remember is the last of the Clinton administration and Bushes’ two terms, they might not be expected to know a true conservative if they bumped into one in the hallway. So, if anyone is tempted to believe the MSM spin that McCain represents the center-right of the Republican Party, don’t buy it. He is getting booed in the Heartland because we see ourselves going down to defeat, while he preaches on the need to play nice with Obama.

As you may know, I have thrown in the towel on this Presidential election. If my state permits it, I will write in Mitt Romney for president. During the course of my involvement in this election, I have become aware of several candidates that I consider true conservatives, people that I can help promote in the future. People like Sarah Steelman and Dr. Bob Onder here in Missouri. Jason Chaffetz in Utah, Jeff Beatty in Massachusetts and William Russell in Pennsylvania. So, although the outcome of this election looks grim at the moment, a last minute reversal is always possible. So whether we win or lose, the commitment to Gov. Romney, the Free and Strong America PAC and other fine conservative candidates is ongoing.

Let’s all stay engaged in the process because, to quote Pat Buchanan, “You can’t legally, have more fun than a Presidential election!”

by Mosheh Oinounou

LAKEVILLE, MN —

It was a surreal scene during John McCain’s town hall meeting Friday as the GOP nominee was forced at times to defend Barack Obama as he urged thousands of supporters to cool their increasingly vitriolic anti-Obama rhetoric.

McCain sought to calm his raucous audience by lightening his criticism of Obama at times and repeatedly pleading with the crowd to be “respectful” of the Democratic nominee only to be repeatedly booed today. Supporters at recent rallies have shouted out that Obama is a terrorist, traitor and criminal, among other choice words.

“We want to fight, and I will fight but we will be respectful. I admire Senator Obama and his accomplishments. I will respect him,” McCain said to a chorus of boos as he tried to answer a supporter who urged him to engage in a “real fight.”

“I want everyone to be respectful and lets make sure we are because that’s the way politics should be conducted…now I don’t mean that has to reduce your ferocity. I just mean its got to be respectful. OK,” he said.

But for the second day in a row, a McCain town hall meeting felt more like an intervention as staunch supporters repeatedly pleaded with the GOP nominee to attack Obama using his associations with people like Bill Ayers or risk losing in November.

“My wife and I are expecting (a child)…and frankly, we’re scared. We’re scared of an Obama presidency,” one man told McCain asserting that Obama also “cohorts with domestic terrorists.”
“I want to be President of the United States and obviously I do not want Senator Obama to be, but I have to tell you…he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States,” McCain said to additional boos from the crowd. He tried to assuage them by adding, ” if I didn’t think I wouldn’t be one heck of a lot better president I wouldn’t be running,” but received only a smattering of applause.

“Saying the facts about him, and the truth, that needs to come out,” another supporter urged McCain, as yet one other called on him to go to “the mattresses” with Obama at next Wednesday’s debate.

It didn’t stop there. McCain had to literally grab the microphone from one female supporter while she was still asking her question after she called Obama an “Arab.”

“No ma’am. No ma’am. He is a decent family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that is what this campaign is all about. He is not,” McCain repeated shaking his head.

The new message comes after days of multiple TV and web ads and campaign conference calls attacking Obama’s associations with Bill Ayers, ACORN, Tony Rezko and casting him as an unknown entity who has been dishonest with the American people. Last Saturday, Sarah Palin kicked off the more aggressive message by stating that he “pals around with terrorists” and it escalated with McCain saying Monday that America does not know “the real Barack Obama.”

Though at other times, McCain reluctantly succumbed to the pressure and attacked Obama’s Ayers connection and liberal voting record as farther to the left than socialist Bernie Sanders.

“In order to win this election…you have to talk a little bit, and bring to the attention of the voters, the press is not going to do it for you…some of the associations that have really marred Obama’s life,” former US Senator Rudy Boschwitz recommended during the event.

Noting that he doesn’t care about Ayers or his wife, whom he described as an “old, washed-up terrorists,” McCain said that the bigger issue is that Obama is not being forthright about his relationship with the 60’s radical.

“What we do care about is people telling the truth about their associations with these individuals. That’s what the question is about…Sen. Obama said that Mr. Ayers was a guy in the neighborhood, when in reality, Sen. Obama’s political career was launched in Mr. Ayers living room,” he said to cheers.

But when lobbed a softball question by another town hall attendee to talk about ACORN improprieties McCain punted on drawing the connection between the community organizing group and Obama–a relationship the campaign had been pushing aggressively all day.

While he called for a “a full and complete and thorough investigation” of allegations of voter registration fraud against the group and left it at that.

A Thank You Note from Dr. Bob Onder

August 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Congress, Dr. Bob Onder

I just received an email from Dr. Bob Onder, who ran for the Republican nomination for U.S. Congress from Missouri’s 9th CD. Although we did not get the outcome we were looking for, I feel privileged in being part of his campaign of grassroots supporters. I have met Dr. Onder and his wife Allison and they are wonderful people.

As our regular readers know, Dr. Onder co-sponsored one of the toughest immigration law enforcement bills in the country. It is being used as a template by other states as they write similar bills. He is an example of what can be done in this country when an informed and engaged electorate asserts it’s rights and responsibilities and demands that the country return to the rule of law.

If Dr. Onder decides to return to public life again, he will have a grassroots team ready to take up the cause.

Dear Friends and Supporters:

Allison and I would like to thank you for all of your help in my run for the Republican nomination for Missouri’s 9th Congressional seat. Although the outcome was not what we hoped for, we will always be grateful for your outpouring of support throughout our campaign. You joined with us as we fought for the true conservative principles that were the reason for this campaign. You sacrificed your time and were extremely generous with your contributions. We truly believe that all of these efforts combined will only help in nurturing and growing the conservative movement across our great state.

As most of you know, my decision to run for Congress was not a career choice, but a calling that I followed. I chose to run for Congress because of my conviction that Washington under the liberal Democrats is fundamentally broken, and I hoped to lead a new generation of conservative Republican reformers who would make the kind of real change that our country so desperately needs. I pledged to work to limit the size and scope of government in our lives, cut taxes, lower energy costs, protect innocent human life, defend our Second Amendment rights, and secure our borders. I know that you will join me in praying that whoever does succeed Congressman Hulshof in Congress will share these important goals.

Mother Theresa of Calcutta once said, “We are called not to be successful, but to be faithful.” Although we were not successful in the primary on August 5th, I know that each one of you was faithful to the calling to try to make our state and our country better reflect the principles valued by our founding fathers.

We have made many wonderful friendships along our journey. We do not know what plans God has for our political future, but we are confident that they will be revealed in due time. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us at Bob@BobOnder.com if we may be of any service to you.

Again, we cannot say enough how much we appreciate your hard work and loving service. As I ended so many of my speeches, God bless you, and God bless America.

Sincerely,

Bob Onder

One Very Big Reason to Vote for Dr. Bob Onder in Missouri’s 9th District, Part 4

August 3rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Dr. Bob Onder, Illegal Immigration, Missouri

Below is the fourth in a series of posts discussing Dr. Bob Onder’s recently written and signed immigration law enforcement bill.

~~John Cronin~~

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (OSHA) TRAINING
(Section 292.675)

Effective August 28, 2009, contractors and subcontractors who
contract to work on public works projects must provide a 10-hour
OSHA construction safety program, or similar program approved by
the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, to be completed
by their on-site employees within 60 days of beginning work on
the construction project. Contractors and subcontractors in
violation of this provision will forfeit to the public body

$2,500 plus $100 a day for each employee who is employed without
training. Public bodies and contractors may withhold assessed
penalties from the payment due to contractors and subcontractors.

BAIL (Section 544.470)

If a judge reasonably believes that a person is an illegal alien,
bail will be denied at least until the person can provide
verification of lawful presence in the United States, at which
time a judge must determine whether release on bail is otherwise
warranted. If lawful presence verification cannot be provided, a
person must be held in custody until discharged by due course of
law.

One Very Big Reason to Vote for Dr. Bob Onder in Missouri’s 9th CD, Part 3

With Missouri’s Aug. 5 primary coming up in 3 days, here is the third installment of Republican Dr. Bob Onder’s recently passed and signed immigration law enforcement bill.

~~John Cronin~~

FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION (Sections 285.525 - 285.560)

Business entities and employers are prohibited from knowingly
employing, hiring, or continuing to employ illegal aliens to
perform work in Missouri. Participation in a federal work
authorization program which enables employers to electronically
verify employment eligibility is required for all public
employers and business entities receiving a state contract or
grant in excess of $5,000 or a state-administered tax credit, tax
abatement, or loan from the state. Participation in a federal
program is an affirmative defense to an allegation that a
business entity knowingly hired an illegal alien.

A general contractor or subcontractor will not be held liable
under the provisions prohibiting employment of illegal aliens,
even if the general contractor’s or subcontractor’s direct
subcontractor hires an illegal alien, if the contract binding the
contractor and subcontractor states that the direct subcontractor
is not knowingly in violation of the prohibition and will not
violate the prohibition and the contractor or subcontractor
receives a sworn affidavit under penalty of perjury attesting to
the fact that the direct subcontractor’s employees are lawfully
present in the United States.

Failing to provide identity information on employees within 15
business days after receipt of the request by the Attorney
General will result in the suspension of a company’s applicable
local licenses, permits, and exemptions until the information is
supplied.

Employing an illegal alien will result in the suspension of a
company’s applicable local licenses, permits, and exemptions for
14 days. A second violation will result in suspension for a
period of one year. A third or subsequent violation will result
in permanent suspension.

A violation of the prohibition against employing illegal aliens
by a business entity awarded a state contract or grant or
state-administered tax credit, tax abatement, or loan from the
state will result in the termination of the contract and the
suspension or debarment of the business entity from doing
business in this state for a period of three years. A second or
subsequent violation will result in the termination of the
contract and the permanent suspension or debarment of the
business entity from doing business in this state. The state may
withhold up to 25% of the total amount due to the business entity
upon termination of the contract.

Any person who files a frivolous complaint not shown by clear and
convincing evidence to be valid will be liable for actual,
compensatory, and punitive damages to the alleged violator.

Only the federal government can determine whether a worker is an
unauthorized alien.

The Attorney General must maintain a database documenting any
business entity whose permit, license, or exemption has been
suspended or whose state contract has been terminated.

Failure by a municipality or county to suspend any applicable
license or permit of a violator as directed by the Attorney
General within 15 business days after notification by the
Attorney General will be deemed a violation of Section 67.307
governing sanctuary cities and will subject the municipality or
county to the specified penalties.

If the federal government discontinues or fails to authorize any
work authorization program, Sections 285.525 - 285.550 will be
reviewed by the General Assembly to determine if they need to be
repealed.

DRIVER’S LICENSES (Sections 302.063, 302.720, and 578.570)

The Department of Revenue is prohibited from issuing driver’s
licenses to illegal aliens and persons who cannot prove lawful
presence in the United States. Missouri will not extend full
faith and credit to out-of-state driver’s licenses issued to
illegal aliens.

The commercial driver’s license written test must only be given
in English. Translators will not be allowed for applicants
taking the test.

Penalties for driver’s license fraud are established. A person
is prohibited from knowingly or in reckless disregard of the
truth:

(a) Assisting any person in committing fraud or deception during
a driver’s license, nondriver’s license, or instruction permit
examination process;

(b) Assisting any person in applying for a driver’s license,
instruction permit, or nondriver’s license that contains or is
substantiated with false or fraudulent information or
documentation, conceals a material fact, or is fraudulent; or

(c) Engaging in a conspiracy to commit any of the preceding acts
or aids or abets the commission of any of the acts.

Any person who violates a driver’s license fraud provision will
be guilty of a class A misdemeanor.

MISCLASSIFICATION OF EMPLOYEES (Sections 285.309 and 285.500 -
285.515)

Employers with five or more employees are required to file
federal 1099-miscellaneous forms with the Department of Revenue
within the same deadline as the filing of Missouri Form 99 forms.
After the fifth violation, an employer will be fined up to $200
for each additional violation.

Employers are prohibited from knowingly and willfully
misclassifying a worker as an independent contractor by failing
to claim the worker as an employee when the employer knows that
the worker is an employee. The Attorney General is given certain
investigative and prosecutorial powers regarding
misclassification of workers. Anyone violating this provision
will be subject to a fine of $50 per day per misclassified worker
up to $50,000.

One Very Big Reason to Vote for Dr. Bob Onder in Missouri’s 9th District

As we all know, one of the hottest of the hot button issues in America right now is illegal immigration.

I was canvassing a neighborhood for Dr. Bob Onder in Washington, Mo. a couple of weekends ago and when I gave my 30 second “elevator talk” about why I supported Onder for U.S. Congress from Missouri’s 9th district, the phrase that elicited the most passionate responses was: “Dr. Onder has already sponsored a bill that has been signed into law that will enforce our border laws against illegal immigration.”

The economy was a close second, but the voter’s concerns were obviously about what is happening on our southern border and how it will affect Americans from all walks of life.

Below I have excerpted several of the provisions of the bill and I would like to deal with several more each day between now and Missouri’s primary election date of Aug.5. The bill was passed earlier this year, so it will be old news to some of you, but for those readers who are not familiar with the details of the bill, I think this is a good time to remind ourselves of what is at stake in this election year and the importance of supporting only those politicians who will stop the endless pandering and political posturing and will, at long last, actually do something about the challenges we are facing in this country, before it is too late to act!

Synopsis of law just passed in Missouri.
Monday, June 2, 2008 9:09 AM

CCS SS HCS HB 1549, 1771, 1395 & 2366 — ILLEGAL ALIENS AND
IMMIGRATION STATUS VERIFICATION

This bill changes the laws regarding illegal aliens and
immigration status verification.

ENFORCEMENT OF IMMIGRATION LAWS (Section 43.032, RSMo)

The Superintendent of the State Highway Patrol is required,
subject to appropriations, to designate some or all members of
the patrol to be trained in accordance with a memorandum of
understanding between Missouri and the United States Department
of Homeland Security concerning the enforcement of federal
immigration laws during the course of their normal duties in
Missouri.

SANCTUARY CITIES (Section 67.307)

Any county, city, town, or village is prohibited from enacting a
sanctuary policy. Any municipality that enacts a sanctuary
policy will be ineligible for money provided through grants
administered by any state agency or department until the policy
is repealed or is no longer in effect. Upon complaint by any
state resident or before the provision or award of any funds or
grants to any government entity, agency, or political
subdivision, any member of the General Assembly may request that
the Attorney General issue an opinion as to whether the
government entity, agency, or political subdivision has a
sanctuary policy. County and municipal law enforcement officers
must be notified in writing of their duty to cooperate with state
and federal agents and officials regarding matters of
immigration.

PUBLIC BENEFITS (Section 208.009)

Aliens unlawfully present in the United States are prohibited
from receiving a state or local public benefit unless it is
offered under 8 U.S.C. 1621(b). Documentary evidence accepted by
the Department of Revenue for obtaining a driver’s license will
suffice as proof of citizenship, permanent residency, or lawful
immigration status when applying for benefits. Individuals can
temporarily receive state or local public benefits for up to 90
days while obtaining the necessary documentation or indefinitely
if the applicant provides a copy of a completed birth certificate
application which is pending. Nonprofit organizations regulated
by the Internal Revenue Service are not required to enforce these
restrictions, nor are they prohibited from providing aid.

McCain May Be Zeroing In On A Running Mate

More buzz in the national press about a possible announcement (we are told within the next 48 hours or so) regarding Sen. John McCain’s selection of his running mate. If it’s Mitt, Obama just got some world class competition.

I was doing some neighborhood canvassing this past Sunday for Dr. Bob Onder’s Congressional campaign and the two hottest topics were: 1. Illegal immigration (voters want the borders secured) and 2. Energy prices (voters want domestic drilling started, yesterday). As we Mittheads know, Gov. Romney is pitch perfect on these issues as well as many others and his coming onboard right in the middle of Obama’s World Apology Tour would change the campaign calculus dramatically.

~~John Cronin~~

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080722/D9233BT80.html

ROCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -

Yet another town-hall meeting isn’t doing the trick. Neither is dropping in on a former Republican president. So just what can John McCain do to draw attention away from his showy Democratic rival? Pick a running mate, perhaps.

Speculation swirled Tuesday that McCain might name his vice presidential partner within the next few days - right in the middle of Barack Obama’s overseas tour.

McCain aides were not helping tamp down the speculation with their comments, often made late in the afternoon, of “no announcement today.”

But what about tomorrow? Or where? On Tuesday, McCain campaigned in New Hampshire, not all that far from a lakeside summer home of vanquished GOP rival Mitt Romney, a former Massachusetts governor. Romney was nowhere to be seen. Well, it wasn’t really that close to his lakeside home.

One member of the audience told McCain he seemed like a very “forgiving” man. “Have you forgiven Mitt Romney?” he asked the senator.

Amid laughter, McCain said, “Mitt has been of tremendous help to my campaign. … He does a better job for me than he did for himself.”

Last Sunday, McCain was in the Bronx at a Yankees game with another former rival, one-time New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. “You hear all kinds of stuff,” Giuliani later said, “but I’m not thinking about anything but helping to get him elected.”

The campaign is also not very open about where McCain is going next, keeping scheduling matters close to the vest. And that adds to the frenzy.

[EDITOR'S NOTE: HERE ARE TWO WEBSITES THAT ARE REPORTING THAT MITT IS McCAIN'S CHOICE FOR VP RUNNING MATE. I CAN'T VERIFY WHETHER THE REPORTS ARE TRUE OR NOT. THIS IS MEANT STRICTLY AS A FYI.]

Onder Campaign Gains Endorsements of Pro-Life, Pro-Family Organizations

This just in from the Onder for Congress Campaign for the 9th Congressional District of Missouri.

~~John Cronin~~

Dr. Bob Onder today announced five new exclusive endorsements from pro-life, pro-family conservatives in his race for Congress.

Onder has recently received glowing endorsements from pro-life and conservative organizations and leaders from Missouri and across the country. He is the only candidate to receive the endorsements of:

Concerned Women for America
National Eagle Forum
Missourians United for Life
Missouri Republican Assembly
Republicans National Coalition for Life
Congressman Dr. Dave Weldon, Congressional Pro-Life Leader
Congressman Chris Smith, Chairman, Congressional Pro-Life Caucus

“It is a great honor to be the only candidate endorsed by these pro-life groups,” said Dr. Onder. “When I get to Washington, I’ll do more than merely push the right buttons on votes, I’ll lead the charge to defend the right to life and mainstream Missouri values.”

Concerned Women for America is just the latest group to endorse Dr. Onder. CWPAC is the nation’s largest women’s public policy organization with more than half a million members nationwide.

“Dr. Onder was already well known to CWPAC long before he decided to run for Congress. As a state Representative, Bob has not only been a solid vote on pro-life issues, he has been a leader,” said CWPAC Executive Director, Mike Mears.

“When you take a look at his accomplishments and leadership abilities as past president for Missourians Against Human Cloning (the main organization against Amendment 2, the Human Cloning Amendment), his carrying of the bill to strengthen Missouri’s informed Consent laws, and sponsorship of key Missouri pro-life bills like the Unborn Child Prevention Act, it is no wonder CWPAC endorsed Dr. Onder.
Bob is the type of pro-family, pro-life leader, Beverly LaHaye was thinking of when she started CWPAC. ”

Earlier this summer, fellow Missourian and Eagle Forum Founder and President Phyllis Schlafly said, “I am happy to endorse Dr. Bob Onder. Bob is a proven leader on all the issues important to Missouri families and Eagle Forum members. He led the fight against the HPV vaccine mandate and authored a bill to crack down on illegal immigration.”

“We know we are getting a fighter with Bob. He isn’t just a reliable vote, he’s an articulate leader, especially on the issue of federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and other pro-life issues,” Schlafly continued. “Bob Onder isn’t a career politician, but a Dad who wants to make a difference. That’s a refreshing change in Washington.”

Dr. Bob has been a pro-life activist for many years - in addition to being the Chief sponsor of this year’s Life bill that passed the Missouri House, HB1831, that would have given Missouri the strongest informed consent law in the nation. The Informed Consent Bill was met with strong support from leaders in the pro-life community across the state:

Kerry Messer, state director of Americans United for Life said, “Dr. Onder has been a great pro-life leader in our state. House Bill 1831 was one of the most important pro-life proposals we have seen in Missouri in years. I’m thrilled that he would propose legislation based on the same principles in Washington.”

“Informed consent legislation is vitally important to protect women and save children here in Missouri,” said Joe Ortwerth, Executive Director of Missouri Family Policy Council. “We were pleased to work closely with Dr. Onder in developing House Bill 1831, and his leadership in sponsoring this lifesaving legislation was outstanding. We are pleased to learn that he plans to make this same legislation a priority should he be elected to Congress, so that women all across the country will have the right to know all the facts when it comes to abortion.”

Bob’s peers recognized him in 2007 as a leader on conservative issues, naming him “Legislator of the Year for Life and Family Issues.” Bob was also the proud recipient of the 2007 “Legislator of the Year” from the Concerned Women for America. Bob is a former Board member of Missouri Right to Life and the past President of Missourians Against Human Cloning.

Dr. Bob Onder Pledges to Oppose Energy Tax Hikes; Challenges Opponents to Follow His Lead

June 24th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Congress, Dr. Bob Onder, Energy, Missouri, Republican Party, Republicans, economy

How ironic it would be if the people who are partially responsible for $4 per gallon gasoline, the Congress, would then get to gleefully impose a tax on the product whose price they helped drive up!!

Luckily, we have men like Dr. Onder who are committed enough to sign no new tax pledges BEFORE they are elected.

Go to www.bobonder.com and check out Dr. Onder’s positions on the issues that are important to us. If you agree with me that Dr. Onder will not be part of the problem once he gets to Washington, but will become part of the solution, please consider making a campaign contribution to help defray the high cost of elective office.

~~John Cronin~~

Columbia, MO -

With gas prices hovering above $4 a gallon and without any relief in sight, Dr. Bob Onder today pledged to vigorously oppose all efforts to raise energy taxes relating to climate change that would result in a net increase in federal revenue.

The pledge, sponsored by Americans for Prosperity, a non-profit taxpayer advocacy group with a strong presence in Missouri, reads:

I, Bob Onder, pledge to the taxpayers of Missouri’s Ninth District and to the American people that I will oppose any legislation relating to climate change that includes a net increase in federal government revenue.

“High energy prices harm American families and small businesses,” Dr. Onder said. “By signing this pledge, I have committed to helping Missourians by fighting all efforts to raise energy prices by government order.”

“For continued prosperity, the American people should have access to affordable, homegrown energy,” he continued. “As a member of Congress, I will help make this a reality by opposing energy tax hikes and supporting exploration of American energy sources.”

Dr. Onder, the leading Republican candidate in the Ninth District, also issued a direct challenge to the other candidates in the Ninth District race. “If the other candidates in this race are serious about lowering the price of gas, the least they can do is sign this pledge to oppose energy tax increases,” he said. “If they don’t sign it, we can assume that they would consider, or even favor higher gas taxes.”

Carl Bearden, Executive Director of Americans for Prosperity in Missouri, applauded Dr. Onder’s pledge. “”Americans for Prosperity-Missouri applauds Dr. Bob Onder for stepping up to voluntarily sign the No Climate Tax pledge. All candidates are encouraged to sign these pledges and go on the record in opposition to using the climate change issue to raise taxes.”

The Carbon Tax Pledge was started by Americans for Prosperity in response to the Lieberman-Warner Secure Climate Act, a piece of legislation that would have imposed a $1.2 trillion tax hike on the American public over the next ten years. Though the bill was sold as a “market-based system,” it would have imposed significant regulatory taxes on energy that would have been passed along to Americans in the form of higher gas, electricity, heating, oil, and food prices. More information on the pledge can be found at www.nocarbontax.org.

Dr. Onder has previously called for the federal government to allow oil exploration in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and on the continental shelf, and was pleased to see Republican Presidential candidate John McCain adopt his position on offshore drilling late last week.

Press inquiries should be directed to Jay Barnes at 573.418.0719 or jaybarnes@bobonder.com. Dr. Onder will be available for interviews regarding this announcement Tuesday afternoon.

Onder Pans Immigration Decision

http://blogs.columbiatribune.com/politics/2008/06/onder_pans_immigration_decisio.html

June 17, 2008

Congressional contender and state Rep. Bob Onder, R-Lake Saint Louis, condemned a U.S. Supreme Court decision that made it easier for individuals who overstay their visas to seek to remain in the United States legally.
From the AP:

The court ruled 5-4 Monday that someone who is here illegally may withdraw his voluntarily agreement to depart and continue to try to get approval to remain in the United States.
The decision essentially embraced a proposed Justice Department regulation governing the treatment of similar cases in the future.

Samson Dada, a Nigerian citizen, stayed beyond the expiration of his tourist visa in 1998. He married an American the following year and soon began trying to obtain a visa as an immediate relative of a citizen. But Dada and his wife apparently failed to submit some documents, causing immigration officials to deny the visa.

Onder said the decision “created new rights for illegal aliens out of thin air.”

“When I get to Washington, I will fight for the values that Missourians hold dear,” said Onder in a statement. “And one of those values is respect for the rule of law. I will fight for effective law enforcement against illegal immigration in Washington just as I successful fought for it in our own state capitol in Jefferson City.”

Onder is in a five-way Republican primary in the race to replace U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia. Another candidate for that post - former state Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-St. Elizabeth - addressed the issue of immigration earlier this month.

Dr. Bob Onder Honored To Receive Eagle Forum Endorsement

Congratulations to Team Onder on receiving the endorsement of the highly respected and influential EAGLE FORUM PAC.

~~John Cronin~~

Washington, MO -

Dr. Bob Onder today thanked the conservative Eagle Forum PAC for its endorsement in his race for Congress in Missouri’s Ninth District.

In a Tuesday, June 17 press release, fellow Missourian and Eagle Forum Founder and President Phyllis Schlafly said, “I am happy to endorse Dr.

“Bob Onder isn’t a career politician, but a homeschooling Dad who wants to make a difference. That’s a refreshing change in Washington.”

“Eagle Forum has long defended the values which have made our nation strong. Values like limited government, the right to life, a strong national defense, and the rule of law are all of vital importance to Eagle Forum and to our country’s future prosperity,” said Dr. Onder. “I am honored to receive their endorsement.”

Dr. Onder, a devoted husband and father of six, is a small business owner, state representative, and lifelong conservative activist. He is a past board member of Missouri Right to Life and a 30-year Life Member of the National Rifle Association. In 2006, Bob served as President and Chairman of the Board of Missourians Against Human Cloning, a position from which he led the fight against state-funded and constitutionally-protected embryonic research in Missouri.

As a state representative, Dr. Onder consistently stood up for conservative principles. He sponsored legislation to provide tax relief for all Missourians and limit spending growth in state government. He immediately became a legislative leader on pro-life issues. In 2007, he championed legislation to make permanent Missouri Alternatives to Abortion, a state program which provides expectant mothers with the resources they need to choose life. This year, he sponsored legislation to protect women and children by making Missouri’s informed consent laws the strongest in the country and to make it a crime to coerce a woman to have an abortion. He also carried the banner for House Bill 1549, which reforms Missouri’s laws on illegal immigration, providing law enforcement officers with the tools they need to stop illegal immigration in our state.

Run to the Hills

For a small flyover state with only 11 electoral votes, Missouri is getting more national attention than you might expect.

The very astute political analyst, Larry Sabato, says that the Missouri Congressional race in the Ninth District is “leaning Republican,” which is another way of saying that Dr. Bob Onder’s campaign is in very good shape right now. Dr. Onder has raised an eye-popping $370,000 and has spent, thus far, the grand total of $1,000. When Dr. Onder says he is a fiscal conservative, you can take him at his word!

~~John Cronin~~

http://blogs.columbiatribune.com/politics/2008/06/run_to_the_hills_1.html

Larry Sabato, a professor at the University of Virginia who is one the most sought after political analysts in the land, penned his take on the scramble to replace U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, R-Columbia.

Sabato is in no position to predict who will come out of each party’s crowded primary, but he did rate the race “leaning Republican.” By contrast, Sabato rates the much ballyhooed race between U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, R-Tarkio, and former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes as a “likely Republican” retention:

‘With still two months to go until Missouri’s August 5th primary date, this race is as crowded as Arrowhead Stadium on a November Sunday. Five Republicans and four Democrats filed to run in their respective primaries, leaving handicappers without much of an idea about who the victors will be. The two candidates with the most money are Republican state representative Bob Onder who has raised $370,000 and Democratic state representative Judy Baker who has raised $216,000. Only one other candidate, Democratic county commissioner Lyndon Bode, has raised even $100,000.

Even with Onder’s big haul, he has spent just $1,000, indicative of his confidence that he will be the Republican nominee. Baker, on the other hand, is facing three opponents who all have spent $5,000 or more and one, Bode, who has spent over $65,000.

The salient issue in this nascent race thus far has been abortion. Onder even debated Democratic candidate and former state senator Ken Jacob on the issue, a rare event for two candidates of opposite parties who each still face a tough primary. Jacob pitches himself as the most ardent supporter of abortion rights, while Bode doesn’t hesitate to proclaim himself a pro-life Democrat.

Dr. Bob Onder Releases First Commercial to Run in Ninth District Race for Congress

Below is the latest press release from the ONDER FOR CONGRESS campaign. I want to thank our readers who have been very supportive of Dr. Onder in their comments on my posts and also in emails to me. Dr. Onder’s positions on the issues that are important to us have been well received by the participants on this site, as I anticipated they would be. IMHO, Dr. Onder and Mitt Romney have very similar political values and positions.

I also want to say that, for me and hopefully for our readers as well, the excitement of the campaign has returned over the last couple of months. All of us at this site were saddened by the turn of events that caused our first choice of candidates to drop out of the race for this election cycle.

However, I feel a sense of accomplishment as Gov. Romney must as well, that we have turned our attention to Congress and to the fight to elect conservative Republicans who will help steer the country away from the tax and spend policies that have brought us closer and closer to eventual insolvency.

Although the conventional wisdom is that the Republican Party is going to get it’s plow cleaned this year, I’m not buying into that scenario. There are some wonderful candidates out there, they just need to get the grassroots activists to throw their support to them as they attempt to unseat the entrenched incumbents who have lost touch with the people they are supposed to represent.

Friends and Supporters,

On behalf of the Onder for Congress campaign, I wanted to share with you our first TV commercial and the press statement we released just moments ago announcing the commercial. It will start running tomorrow but you can view it today on YouTube.

DR. BOB ONDER RELEASES “EFFECTIVE CONSERVATIVE LEADER” - FIRST
COMMERCIAL TO RUN IN NINTH DISTRICT RACE FOR CONGRESS

Dr. Bob Onder today released the first television ad in his campaign for Congress. The ad, titled simply, “Effective Conservative Leader,” touts Dr. Onder’s history as a conservative leader and his impressive achievements in the Missouri House of Representatives. It focuses on the right to life, illegal immigration, and taxes.

“In Congress, I will continue to defend innocent human life, secure our borders, and provide tax relief for all Missouri families,” Onder pledges.

“Of course, you can’t tell someone’s life story in 30 seconds,” said Penny Henke of St. Charles County and Treasurer of the National Board of Pachyderm Clubs, “But Dr. Onder’s first ad shows voters that he is a family man and lifelong conservative who knows what he wants to do when he gets to Washington and has a track record of success fighting for mainstream Missouri values.”

“Dr. Bob Onder: Effective Conservative Leader” is the first ad for any candidate, Republican or Democrat, to be aired in the Ninth District race. It represents yet another victory for the Onder campaign. In April, at the end of the first federal campaign finance reporting period of the campaign, Dr. Onder announced he had raised more money from more donors than any other candidate in the Ninth District race. In May, Dr. Onder announced endorsements from 23 past or current elected officials - again, a total which topped all other candidates in the Ninth District.

The ad can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sMvUhBhFtQ.

At Last: A Common Sense Approach to Our Energy Crisis….Onder Reacts to High Gas Prices

I had the chance to meet Dr. Bob Onder yesterday at the Grand Opening of his campaign headquarters in Lake St. Louis, a suburb about 30 miles from my home in Kirkwood, Mo.

The event was well attended and I had the chance to talk to Dr. Onder about the nuts and bolts of getting his new immigration law enforcement bill through both houses of the Missouri legislature.

Missouri Gov. Blunt deserves credit for helping to make it happen. My understanding is that the Governor told the legislature that he wanted two bills to sign before the regular session ended or he would call a special session of the legislature. The two bill were: an immigration law enforcement bill and an “informed consent” bill relating to protecting both the women and the pre-born infants in cases where an abortion is being considered.

He got both the bills he wanted. I told Dr. Onder that the immigration bill was everything I could have hoped for. There is a very important lesson to be learned here. One year ago an amnesty bill was offered with little debate and no public hearings. We were told it’s passage was a foregone conclusion and that we were bigots if we opposed it.

Now we see what happens when an informed and proactive electorate demands change and demands action. I don’t for a moment think the battle is over. But we are so far ahead of where we were a year ago that it is inspiring to realize what can be done to get this country back on course.

Now, turning our attention to another issue of extremely high importance, the looming energy crisis as a gallon of regular gasoline heads north of $4 per gallon.

The Onder campaign has send me their latest press release, articulating Dr. Onder’s position of what our national policy should be regarding our dependence on Middle Eastern oil. When I read the news release, I said pretty much what I said in the above headline: “At last, some common sense.”

~~John Cronin~~

Lake St. Louis - With gasoline pressing past $4 per gallon, Dr. Bob Onder today announced his support for increased investment in American resources as a long-term solution to reduce gas prices and lower our reliance on foreign oil.

Dr. Onder released the following statement:

As the owners of an old plumber’s van that we use to haul around our six kids, my wife and I share the pain Missourians feel at the gas pump. As Missourians are all too aware, the price of oil has doubled over the past year. Just this weekend, gas prices moved above $4 per gallon. With gas prices that high, families are forced to take money out of other parts of their budget just to get to work or drive their kids to baseball practice, and businesses use resources that might have been used to create new jobs to pay for energy costs.

Skyrocketing energy costs are damaging our economy and killing jobs, over 60,000 in just the last month alone. Unfortunately, however, there does not appear to be any sign of relief in sight. A little over a month ago, in an effort to lower prices, President Bush traveled to Saudi Arabia to ask King Abdullah to release more oil from Saudi reserves. Stop and think about that: The democratically-elected leader of the most prosperous country in history had to essentially beg a second-rate, fourth-generation, third world monarch to ease the burden on American families. Much to his chagrin, the president was rebuffed. Saudi Arabia will not be increasing supply.

Something’s not right with this picture. We should not have to rely on the charity of foreign governments. We must find a way to wean ourselves off foreign oil. We need to invest in American energy sources now.

The good news is that we have the resources to end our reliance. The bad news is that Democrats have stood in the way of American development. At the far northern end of Alaska, in ANWR, we could have access to 1 million barrels of oil per day. In comparison, last year, we imported 590,000 barrels per day from OPEC nations, including 36,000 from Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, in 1995, former President Clinton vetoed legislation which would have allowed us to use this American oil because he said it would take ten years for the oil to start flowing. Thirteen years later, rather than enjoy daily access to nearly 28 times the oil we import from Saudi Arabia, we still rely on anti-American sources of energy.

It only gets worse. The Department of Energy estimates that 86 billion barrels of oil are available under America’s continental shelf. Yet, 85 percent of it is off-limits. Those who stand in the way of American energy production claim that new wells would cause environmental harm. But when Hurricane Katrina wiped out over 2,100 oil or gas wells in the Gulf of Mexico, we did not have a single serious environmental mishap.

American ingenuity has accomplished many great things. When I was a kid, we put a man on the moon. Since then, our engineers have come up with equally heroic solutions to environmental problems. Today, we can drill for oil in an environmentally friendly way, both in Alaska and in the Gulf of Mexico. While green nations like Denmark and Norway allow their citizens to reap the benefits of their own natural resources, environmental radicals in the United States wreak havoc on the wallets of average Americans.

In the short term, we should continue to seek solutions like the suspension of deposits into the strategic petroleum reserve which President Bush signed into law just two weeks ago. But, in the long term, to ensure future prosperity, we must take advantage of American resources in an environmentally-friendly way. We have the technology to do it. All that is left is to generate the political will to let American ingenuity work its magic.

Dr. Bob Onder is a state representative and Republican candidate for Missouri’s Ninth Congressional District.
