CPAC Attendees Feb. 26-28 Washington, D.C

This marks the third year in a row ( if memory serves ) that Gov. Romney has been invited to attend one of the most prestigious conservative conferences of the year. This conference always features a Who’s Who of the conservative movement in America.

Noticeable by her absence is the formerly ubiquitous Sarah Palin. I wish her the best and here’s hoping she is content to take care of business in and for the State of Alaska for the next couple of election cycles. Then maybe she can go to CPAC as a major player when she gets the street creds to skate with the big dogs.

Bleeding Heart Tightwads

December 21st, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Charitable Giving, Charity, Liberal, conservatives

Very interesting article that offers more evidence that liberals need to “walk the walk” and not just “talk the talk.”

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/21/opinion/21kristof.html?_r=1

This holiday season is a time to examine who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, but I’m unhappy with my findings. The problem is this: We liberals are personally stingy.

Liberals show tremendous compassion in pushing for generous government spending to help the neediest people at home and abroad. Yet when it comes to individual contributions to charitable causes, liberals are cheapskates.

Arthur Brooks, the author of a book on donors to charity, “Who Really Cares,” cites data that households headed by conservatives give 30 percent more to charity than households headed by liberals. A study by Google found an even greater disproportion: average annual contributions reported by conservatives were almost double those of liberals.

Other research has reached similar conclusions. The “generosity index” from the Catalogue for Philanthropy typically finds that red states are the most likely to give to nonprofits, while Northeastern states are least likely to do so.

The upshot is that Democrats, who speak passionately about the hungry and homeless, personally fork over less money to charity than Republicans — the ones who try to cut health insurance for children.

“When I started doing research on charity,” Mr. Brooks wrote, “I expected to find that political liberals — who, I believed, genuinely cared more about others than conservatives did — would turn out to be the most privately charitable people. So when my early findings led me to the opposite conclusion, I assumed I had made some sort of technical error. I re-ran analyses. I got new data. Nothing worked. In the end, I had no option but to change my views.”

Something similar is true internationally. European countries seem to show more compassion than America in providing safety nets for the poor, and they give far more humanitarian foreign aid per capita than the United States does. But as individuals, Europeans are far less charitable than Americans.

Americans give sums to charity equivalent to 1.67 percent of G.N.P., according to a terrific new book, “Philanthrocapitalism,” by Matthew Bishop and Michael Green. The British are second, with 0.73 percent, while the stingiest people on the list are the French, at 0.14 percent.

(Looking away from politics, there’s evidence that one of the most generous groups in America is gays. Researchers believe that is because they are less likely to have rapacious heirs pushing to keep wealth in the family.)

When liberals see the data on giving, they tend to protest that conservatives look good only because they shower dollars on churches — that a fair amount of that money isn’t helping the poor, but simply constructing lavish spires.

It’s true that religion is the essential reason conservatives give more, and religious liberals are as generous as religious conservatives. Among the stingiest of the stingy are secular conservatives.
According to Google’s figures, if donations to all religious organizations are excluded, liberals give slightly more to charity than conservatives do. But Mr. Brooks says that if measuring by the percentage of income given, conservatives are more generous than liberals even to secular causes.

In any case, if conservative donations often end up building extravagant churches, liberal donations frequently sustain art museums, symphonies, schools and universities that cater to the well-off. (It’s great to support the arts and education, but they’re not the same as charity for the needy. And some research suggests that donations to education actually increase inequality because they go mostly to elite institutions attended by the wealthy.)

Conservatives also appear to be more generous than liberals in nonfinancial ways. People in red states are considerably more likely to volunteer for good causes, and conservatives give blood more often. If liberals and moderates gave blood as often as conservatives, Mr. Brooks said, the American blood supply would increase by 45 percent.

So, you’ve guessed it! This column is a transparent attempt this holiday season to shame liberals into being more charitable. Since I often scold Republicans for being callous in their policies toward the needy, it seems only fair to reproach Democrats for being cheap in their private donations. What I want for Christmas is a healthy competition between left and right to see who actually does more for the neediest.

Of course, given the economic pinch these days, charity isn’t on the top of anyone’s agenda. Yet the financial ability to contribute to charity, and the willingness to do so, are strikingly unrelated. Amazingly, the working poor, who have the least resources, somehow manage to be more generous as a percentage of income than the middle class.

So, even in tough times, there are ways to help. Come on liberals, redeem yourselves, and put your wallets where your hearts are.

I invite you to comment on this column on my blog, On the Ground. Please also join me on Facebook, watch my YouTube videos and follow me on Twitter.

‘Cot Guy’ Chaffetz Learns His Way in Washington

November 22nd, 2008 | 4 Comments | Posted in Congress, Jason Chaffetz, conservatives

Ya gotta love this guy. Jason Chaffetz is already endearing himself to cost-cutting budget hawks with his frugal ways. Getting the nickname ‘Cot Guy’ on his orientation trip to D.C. and then wearing it as a badge of honor is a powerful symbolic statement that the taxpayers need to see more of.

Jason is off to a good start. Keep up the good work, “Cot Guy.”

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.sltrib.com/News/ci_11042877?source=rss

By: Thomas Burr
The Salt Lake Tribune

Washington—- Rep.-elect Jason Chaffetz doesn’t have a tape measure, but he feels the office fits him nonetheless. The suite may not be the largest or have the best view, but it smells better than the last one he visited.

“Put the cigar office sixth” on the list, Utah’s newly elected congressman tells his just-hired chief of staff, Justin Harding. “It’s thick in there,” he says of the former suite where the current occupant likes to light up a stogie.

Chaffetz is capping off his first week in Washington for freshman orientation by hunting down a new office suite. With only 30 minutes until the office lottery, he and Harding are scurrying between floors of the Longworth Office Building, prioritizing the best space available.

The new 3rd District representative-elect spent a whirlwind week in the nation’s capital, learning his way around the Hill, hob-nobbing with new members and fellow Republicans and lobbying for committee assignments.

But it was a trash-bag-wrapped cot that earned Chaffetz the most notoriety in his first week. CNN, Fox, Politico, Congressional Quarterly all mentioned the fact that Chaffetz plans to sleep in his office — on a cot purchased at Smith’s — instead of renting an apartment in the pricey Washington area.

“I’d like to be known as something other than the guy who sleeps on a cot,” Chaffetz says as he walks to the office lottery room.

“So, you’ve got a cot?”, a woman asks Chaffetz as he approaches the lottery organizers.

The baby-faced congressman-to-be isn’t too upset about being classified as the “cot guy” for now. He says that when it comes down to policy issues, he’ll expand his reputation.

For now, Chaffetz is hoping to land a spot on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, on which the man he ousted, Rep. Chris Cannon, is a senior Republican member.

“That’s a situation in which I’d thrive,” Chaffetz says. “It’s highly combative and it touches on all area of government.”

Chaffetz, who ran to the right of Cannon in the conservative Utah district, has pledged to be a vocal member of the minority. He says GOP House leadership has urged the new members to spread their message, and Chaffetz says he won’t disappoint.

“It’s what I got elected to do.”

But, first, he needs an office.

Sixth in line for the lottery, Chaffetz bides his time in the hearing room sitting next to his wife, Julie, who stocked up on souvenirs at the House shop. The first pick takes the cigar office. Chaffetz grabs his second choice, a three-room suite with a view of the columned Rayburn House Office Building.

Outside the room, Chaffetz is greeted by two television cameras and three reporters. They want to know about the cot.

Mitt Romney Endorses Myers

With McCain sinking in the polls and Obama showing 313 Electoral College Votes according to Real Clear Politics, the presumptive favorite of conservatives, Mitt Romney, continues to campaign for Republican candidates nationwide.

http://www.pressofatlanticcity.com/109/story/285485.html

By ROB SPAHR Staff Writer, 609-978-2012

MEDFORD TOWNSHIP - Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney formally endorsed Chris Myers, the Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in New Jersey’s 3rd District on Tuesday.

Romney, who campaigned for president earlier this year, called Myers an unusual man who offers the district a unique opportunity.

“I don’t think people recognize how unique it is to find a person with a good heart and a great mind and also unique experience, a combination that is sorely needed in Washington,” Romney said. “Chris is a person who has experience in the military sector, in the private sector and in the public sector. All three areas have given him the kind of perspective which brings a unique capacity to help the people of this district.”

U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton, R-3rd, whose seat Myers is attempting to fill, said there is no industry more important to the 3rd District than the ones surrounding defense security.

“For me to pass the baton to somebody like Chris Myers (a vice president with Lockheed Martin), to manage that Congressional side of that national security industry that’s in this district, there is nobody like Chris Myers. Certainly, not his opponent,” Saxton said.

Akin Refuses to Mortgage America’s Future….Says Bailout Is One of the Worst Bills in Eight Years

I have been so busy blogging for Mitt Romney and for conservative Republican Congressional candidates around the country, that I have inadvertently over looked my own Congressman!

One of the reasons I haven’t been posting about Todd Akin here in Missouri’s 2nd CD is because Todd is a rock-ribbed Republican who can absolutely be depended upon to vote the way he promises constituents he will vote during the campaign. No surprises with Todd Akin in office.

Below is a recent news release that was posted on Congressman Akin’s website where he talks about the budget-busting bailout of those involved in real estate speculation.

~~John Cronin~~

http://akin.house.gov/list/press/mo02_akin/20080723.shtml

July 23, 2008

Washington, DC –

Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) says he will vote against yet another huge government bailout, which is expected to be voted on today. H.R. 3321, the Emergency Assistance for the Redevelopment of Abandoned and Foreclosed Homes Act, seeks to address increased mortgage foreclosures by spending at least $300 billion in taxpayer dollars.

The $300 billion bailout is for borrowers and lenders of home mortgages that have overextended.

“I have heard loud and clear from many of my constituents that although there is sympathy for those facing a home foreclosure, they do not want to see their hard earned tax dollars being spent on another huge government bailout,” stated Akin. “The answer is not to penalize the vast majority of taxpayers who have borrowed responsibly and are able to meet their obligations. By throwing government dollars at the problem, we are creating incentives for foreclosure, increasing government debt, and in the long run worsening the economy.”

“The measure also guarantees a substantial number of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae loans creating a potential liability of up to trillions of dollars that could dramatically increase the national debt,” said Akin.

“In this regard, the American taxpayer is being asked to underwrite the financial mismanagement of these quasi-governmental agencies,” said Akin. “Instead of giving the United States Treasury a blank check for the bailout we need to have, and enforce, stricter regulatory guidelines on these lenders”.

“Congress is sometimes metaphorically referred to as ‘the People’s House’. As such, we must be sure not to take on more debt than we can afford,” said Akin. “Because of the tremendous impact on the national debt, I believe this is one of the worst bills we have passed in eight years.”

Lt. Col. Russell to the Rescue: The Man Who Could Topple Jack Murtha

Michelle Malkin writes in NATIONAL REVIEW.COM about the quixotic quest by an active duty Army officer to unseat the (hopefully) disgraced King of Pork and the man who smeared the Marines involved in the attack in Haditha, Jack Murtha. If ever a craven politician deserved to be turned out of office, it is Murtha.

Please take the time to read Michelle’s article and if you live in Pennsylvania, check out Lt. Col. William Russell and his campaign to unseat the man who tried to convict the Marines in the press.

By Michelle Malkin

A jaw-dropping political miracle may be on the horizon. No, I’m not talking about the second coming of the Obamessiah. I’m talking about the long-deserved comeuppance of troop-smearing, pork-feasting, scandal-tainted Democratic Rep. Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania.

The 18-term congressman’s challenger, staunch conservative Republican newcomer William Russell, raised nearly $670,000 in the second fundraising quarter. Earmark king Murtha scraped together a measly $119,000. Russell’s underdog campaign bested Murtha without the perks of incumbency, national name recognition, big PAC donations or mainstream media support.

Even more amazing: The 45-year-old Russell, a Desert Storm veteran, former Army lieutenant colonel and Army reservist who survived the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, was not even publicly campaigning during the quarter. He is on active duty with the Army until after Aug. 1 and is barred from actively campaigning until then.

If all that didn’t make this enough of an inspiring David and Goliath story: In February, a Pennsylvania judge ruled that Russell had failed to collect enough signatures to make the primary ballot. But Russell refused to give up on his goal of permanently redeploying Murtha from his entrenched seat of power in Washington. The GOP neophyte persevered on a shoestring budget and won more than 4,000 write-in votes in the spring to earn a spot on the general election ballot. According to Russell’s campaign manager and veteran GOP activist Peg Luksik, the bulk of contributions from about 16,000 donors in the second quarter were less than $50.

New Limbaugh Contract Inspires America

Wasn’t it great news when Rush’s mega contract was announced? Talk about a win-win situation. Conservative voices continue to dominate the airwaves because we have the best message and the best debaters. Liberals get to kvetch for at least another eight years.

Liberal radio is virtually non-existent as the last attempt to get anyone to listen to their dopey message, Air America, has failed miserably. Conservative radio is so popular and profitable for the stations that they can pay Rush $400,000,000 over the next eight years and still make money.

Anybody know how much Franken earned when he was electrifying America during his brief stint on the air?

“There but for the grace of God go I.” The phrase is usually a cautionary note. My neighbor’s blunder could have been mine. My co-worker’s illness could easily be my affliction. I ought to count my blessings. But the flipside of the phrase is pregnant with promise, and many Americans felt it when they learned that radio-broadcaster phenom Rush Limbaugh, who marks his 20th year “of broadcast excellence” this summer, is making media history with a new $400 million contract.

Sure, many right-wingers were happy just to know that “El Rushbo” is making more than Katie Couric. “That could be me one day,” many surmise upon hearing news like that. With a little grace and hard work, maybe that kind of great success could be mine. Someday, that could be my son, if I teach him right. That sentiment — an appreciation of what’s possible in America, land of the free, which includes a free market — is at the heart of the non-hardcore-Left reaction to the news.

Musgrave Pushes Romney for Veep

Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave (R-Colo.) talks about the strong support Gov. Romney enjoys in her state.

~~John Cronin~~

By Jackie Kucinich Posted: 06/04/08 07:48 PM [ET]

Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-Colo.) Wednesday called on Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to select former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) as his running mate.

“I hope I’m starting a movement,” Musgrave said in an interview. “In Colorado, we love Mitt Romney.”

Musgrave said that during the Colorado Republican convention, every caucus she visited had made Romney its top choice — a trend that was reflected in the caucus totals.
Romney won the Colorado caucus with 60 percent of the vote, dwarfing McCain’s, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee’s and Rep. Ron Paul’s (Texas) totals.

She added that while she hadn’t spoken to her fellow House Republicans about her pitch for Romney, she expressed confidence that other members would follow suit.

She cited Romney’s “real-world experience” as an executive as a particular attribute that would “serve McCain well.”

Musgrave, a staunch conservative on social issues who is being targeted this fall by Democrats, said, “I know conservatives can count on [McCain and Romney] to support traditional values and fight to protect the tax dollars of working families.”

Romney Stumping In DC For Pro-Life Republicans

Hat Tip to 2thepoint for the heads up on this story. Gov. Romney continues to rack up the frequent flier miles as he headlines dinners and fundraisers to benefit conservative republicans. When he is ready to run again in 2012, he will have the most extensive campaign organization in the country.

Real Clear Politics

By: Reid Wilson

June 05, 2008

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, said to occupy a prominent place on whatever version of vice presidential short list John McCain has in his head, is keeping busy over a two-day stretch in Washington. While McCain is out of town, his one-time rival is certainly making his presence in Republican circles known.

Despite thunder and lightening, and more than a few tornado warnings, Romney attended a fundraiser held by the Susan B. Anthony List, which promotes pro-life Republicans, last night in Washington. Money from the event went to Rep. Steve Pearce, who on Tuesday claimed the GOP nomination to replace outgoing Senator Pete Domenici in New Mexico.

This morning Romney hit three morning shows — on MSNBC, CNN and Fox News — live from McCain’s Arlington, Virginia headquarters.

Later, Romney will hold a media availability at a swank hotel just up the road from McCain Central, with former Governor Jim Gilmore, the GOP nominee for retiring Senator John Warner’s seat, and businessman Keith Fimian, who is running for Tom Davis’s Eleventh District. Romney is also slated to attend a fundraiser for Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, who will run for re-election in 2009.

Jeff Beatty Easily Qualifies for Massachusetts Ballot: Set to Challenge Uber-Liberal Kerry this fall

Great news from the Beatty Campaign. Jeff Beatty, former elite Delta force member and Purple Heart winner has easily qualified for the Republican Senate ballot in Massachusetts, pitting him against John Kerry, former 2004 democratic Presidential nominee and 24 year Senatorial incumbent.

Congratulations to Jeff and to Team Beatty, including the unsung heroes of all successful campaigns, the grassroots activists who are the foot soldiers who ring the doorbells, put out the yards signs and make good things happen!

Summary: US Senate Candidate Jeff Beatty, a Republican from Massachusetts, has secured a spot on the ballot thanks to a grass roots campaign that gathered 17,000 certified signatures. Beatty thanked volunteers, staff members, donors and supporters at a gathering in Westborough this past weekend, where he also outlined his campaign plans for the coming months.

US SENATE CANDIDATE JEFF BEATTY THANKS VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF FOR SUCCESSFUL NOMINATION DRIVE, OUTLINES CAMPAIGN TO NOVEMBER

Grass roots effort results in 17 thousand certified signatures delivered to the Secretary of State’s office, assuring Beatty’s place on ballot

Boston - US Senate candidate Jeff Beatty, Republican, celebrated gaining access to the ballot by personally thanking supporters and volunteers who powered his signature drive. For two months, hundreds of supporters canvassed the Commonwealth sharing Beatty’s campaign vision and filling enough nomination sheets necessary to get Beatty on the ballot. Beatty’s successful nomination follows another significant milestone announced last month - 30 thousand donors who gave almost $1 million dollars to his campaign.

“I’m honored by how many people have decided to invest in our campaign, giving their time and effort to bring new leadership to the U.S. Senate,” said Beatty at a supporter gathering held in Westborough over the weekend. “This proves that people are excited about this race and, after 24 years of lackluster leadership, are ready to send a real fighter to Washington.”

Beatty began this campaign a year ago by launching an exploratory committee in April 2007. Since then he has traveled throughout Massachusetts listening to voters and sharing his vision to protect their families, protect their jobs and protect the Commonwealth and country.

“It is time to send someone with relevant experience to Washington to fight for these basic values,” said Beatty, a former Delta Force Officer and founder of a homeland security and public safety company. “I have owned a business, worked for years in public safety and security, and developed the background to solve the serious problems we face today. I’m running because we have waited too long for someone to step up and do the work.”

Beatty will spend the remaining spring and summer months introducing himself to voters and preparing for the hard contest coming in the fall.

Dr. Bob Onder Releases List of Key Endorsements for 9th District

News from Dr. Bob Onder’s campaign office shows a growing list of influential Missouri leaders have endorsed his candidacy. His first quarter fund raising shows some financial firepower as well.

While the national press is ringing the death knell for the Republican Party in this election, it seems the good citizens of Missouri didn’t get the memo.

~~John Cronin~~

Jefferson City – Representative Bob Onder today announced the support of twenty-two current and two former state elected officials in his bid to represent the people of the Ninth District.

Dr. Onder’s announcement comes shortly after winning the first-quarter fundraising race against
all other candidates to replace Representative Kenny Hulshof when he raised over $370,000,
more than any other candidate in the race regardless of party affiliation.

“As I prepare to bring my prescription for change to Washington, I am honored to have the
support of so many conservative leaders in the 9th District and around our great state,” said Dr. Onder. “These leaders understand what it takes to defend our freedoms and fight for mainstream Missouri values. I greatly appreciate their support.”

“Dr. Onder has been a leader in the General Assembly from his first day in office,” said House
Republican Majority Floor Leader Steve Tilley. “Simply put, he is a proven winner who gets
things done on the issues that matter most to Missourians. I know he’ll take that same ability to
Washington.”

“I can’t think of anyone more qualified to represent the people of the 9th District than Dr.
Onder,” said Representative Doug Funderburk of St. Peter’s. “His experience as a doctor and
lawyer, and his willingness to fight for the right-to-life and tax relief and to stop illegal
immigration and wasteful spending will serve the people of Missouri well in Washington.”

“From watching him work in the Missouri House, I know that Dr. Onder will stand up for
principle and Missouri values when he gets to Congress,” said Representative Jason Smith of
Crawford County. “He’s just the type of leader we need to fight the liberal excesses of Nancy
Pelosi and the MoveOn.org crowd in Washington.”

Representative Brian Nieves noted that Dr. Onder’s leadership is not restricted to the pro-life
issue. This year, Dr. Onder also sponsored House Bill 1549, an effort to outlaw sanctuary cities
in Missouri and to give local law enforcement the tools they need to stop illegal immigration.
“Last year, I stood side-by-side with Bob Onder when we passed my bill to put English as the
official language on this year’s ballot,” said Representative Brian Nieves of Franklin County.
“This year, I was proud to stand by him as he proposed House Bill 1549. When he gets to
Washington, I know Dr. Onder will fight for effective enforcement of our immigration laws and
against San Francisco-liberal calls for amnesty.”

Dr. Onder has been a leader his entire life, particularly on pro-life issues. After graduating with a
medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, he opened his own medical practice in
St. Charles. Later, after seeing so many of his physician friends face frivolous lawsuits, he went
to night school to get a law degree at St. Louis University. He is an active member of St. Gianna Catholic Church in St. Charles, and has six children with his wife, Allison. He has served on the boards of Missouri Right to Life, the Catholic Medical Association, and the Center for Bioethics and Culture. In 2006, he led the statewide fight against Amendment 2 as President of
Missourians Against Human Cloning.

The growing list of endorsements, combined with the first-quarter fundraising win, shows
Onder’s increasing momentum and widespread support. A full list of endorsements and

Rocking the Republican Party

I received a comment from a couple of our regular readers, Paulee & Mike, from the great state of Maine. Many of you no doubt remember them from all the fun we had last week when they attended the Maine Republican Convention.

Well it seems that Paulee & Mike have just volunteered to help elect conservative Republicans this fall. Yes!! I have taken the liberty of posting part of their comments that have to do with their decision to get involved with their local Republican organization. I can’t over emphasize how important their decision is. They have now placed themselves elbow to elbow with the movers and shakers of their state’s politics. When the time comes to influence their state’s leadership in favor of Mitt Romney in 2012, they will be in a position to lobby for Romney in a way that no outsider could hope to.

Congratulations, Paulee & Mike! Keep us posted on your budding political fiefdom.

McCain’s Christain Problem

It’s almost as if Robert Novak is an avid reader of this website. My jaw almost hit the floor this morning as I read his column in the Washington Post.

He has touched on the very points that we have collectively made here. The main point being that McCain was the major beneficiary of Huckabee’s divide and conquer strategy. At one point early in the primary season, Mitt Romney appeared ready to run the table. He was in first or second place in 6 out of 7 of the first primaries. Even as a strong supporter of Mitt Romney, I had to shake my head in wonder. Coming from a virtual unknown to such a commanding lead within the space of a year was an awesome accomplishment.

But then something very strange started to happen. Social conservatives who are very “family values” oriented, who are solidly pro life and who favor a strong military and a smaller, simpler government, abandoned the candidate who supported all those positions in favor of a glib, but shallow candidate with zero foreign affairs credibility and zero economic credibility.

If what Robert Novak writes in his column is true, then these poor souls have not learned a single, solitary lesson from their disastrous experiment in Presidential politics. They are still true believers in the man from Hope.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am getting sick of hearing the empty platitudes about “Hope” and “Change.” I will wait for 2012 when we can start talking again about “Experience” and “Competency.”

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article
/2008/05/11/AR2008051101786.html

McCain and Huckabee were friendly rivals in this year’s Republican competition, sharing contempt for Mitt Romney. Indeed, McCain would not be where he is today had Huckabee not mobilized born-again voters to upset Romney in the Iowa caucuses. All of Romney’s efforts to overtake McCain in conservative Southern state primaries were stifled by Huckabee’s success in those contests. Huckabee quickly endorsed McCain once he clinched the nomination. They bonded publicly in Little Rock on April 24 during McCain’s tour.

Networks and Newspapers Lose the News

I am currently reading a very interesting and informative book written by the LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS, published by THE LYONS PRESS, “CHOOSING THE PRESIDENT 2004″.

They have a study they refer to in the book that was done by the PEW RESEARCH CENTER FOR THE PEOPLE AND THE PRESS; “2002 MEDIA CONSUMPTION SURVEY.”

Here’s a look at what they found.

“As recently as 1990, the major television networks—ABC,CBS and NBC—had a dominant role in delivering news to the American people. In 1992, the nightly network news shows with Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings regularly reached 60 percent of the adult population. By 2002, that number had declined to 32 percent—almost cut in half.

Newspapers, the most traditional of the major media, faced the same trend. While 58% of people polled in 1994 said that they had read a newspaper in the last day, by 2002 that figure was down to 41%. In addition, older Americans are much more likely to be newspaper readers than people in their twenties—a trend that has the newspapers very worried.

Local TV news and radio also reach lots of people, and both of these news media have also lost viewers or listeners in the past ten years. Cable TV news, the most influential of the new media, has held steady in recent years. In 2002, it was regularly watched by 33% of Americans.

When you take into account all their news programing, including the morning shows and news magazines, the major networks still receive some attention from a majority of Americans. As a result, their coverage of the issues and the candidates can have considerable influence on the course of a presidential campaign. But campaign planners are very much aware that the way America gets it’s news is changing fast, and new strategies are needed.”

For most of our readers, the above is probably old news. I quote it to point out the need for utilizing a very basic, but very effective grassroots organizing technique, neighborhood canvassing. My experience with door-to-door canvassing earlier this year was very positive. It reinforced my belief that one way to help overcome the MSM’s effect on the campaigns of conservatives is to get in front of voters and deliver a message to them that they haven’t heard before. My experience both in Des Moines and in St. Louis was that most people still rely on the newspapers and broadcast TV for their impressions of the candidates, and everyone on this site knows from bitter experience what the Huckabee network of churches and pastors and the MSM propaganda machine did to Gov. Romney’s run for the nomination.

If you have not tried it before, I’d like to encourage you to team up with a friend and to start to organize your own neighborhoods for a conservative Republican Congressional candidate or incumbent. Make sure you are up to speed on your candidate’s positions and very importantly, keep good records of your contacts. Get them on an emailing list where possible and hand out literature for those voters who don’t have internet access. Ask for permission to place a sign in their yards and be sure to recontact everyone you talked to the weekend before the election in order to “get out the vote.”

It’s hard work and time consuming. It’s also very effective. Here’s a look at how Gov. Romney did in the areas that had the highest concentrations of grassroots volunteers. To a great degree, the results were influenced by these area’s favorable demographics, having a higher percentage of college educated and upscale voters (patterns we saw very plainly in Des Moines as well), but, according to the national campaign office in Boston, the results were also influenced by the volunteer organization’s co-ordinated efforts.
