Bleeding Heart Tightwads

December 21st, 2008 | 5 Comments | Posted in Charitable Giving, Charity, Liberal, conservatives

Very interesting article that offers more evidence that liberals need to “walk the walk” and not just “talk the talk.”

~~John Cronin~~

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/21/opinion/21kristof.html?_r=1

This holiday season is a time to examine who’s been naughty and who’s been nice, but I’m unhappy with my findings. The problem is this: We liberals are personally stingy.

Liberals show tremendous compassion in pushing for generous government spending to help the neediest people at home and abroad. Yet when it comes to individual contributions to charitable causes, liberals are cheapskates.

Arthur Brooks, the author of a book on donors to charity, “Who Really Cares,” cites data that households headed by conservatives give 30 percent more to charity than households headed by liberals. A study by Google found an even greater disproportion: average annual contributions reported by conservatives were almost double those of liberals.

Other research has reached similar conclusions. The “generosity index” from the Catalogue for Philanthropy typically finds that red states are the most likely to give to nonprofits, while Northeastern states are least likely to do so.

The upshot is that Democrats, who speak passionately about the hungry and homeless, personally fork over less money to charity than Republicans — the ones who try to cut health insurance for children.

“When I started doing research on charity,” Mr. Brooks wrote, “I expected to find that political liberals — who, I believed, genuinely cared more about others than conservatives did — would turn out to be the most privately charitable people. So when my early findings led me to the opposite conclusion, I assumed I had made some sort of technical error. I re-ran analyses. I got new data. Nothing worked. In the end, I had no option but to change my views.”

Something similar is true internationally. European countries seem to show more compassion than America in providing safety nets for the poor, and they give far more humanitarian foreign aid per capita than the United States does. But as individuals, Europeans are far less charitable than Americans.

Americans give sums to charity equivalent to 1.67 percent of G.N.P., according to a terrific new book, “Philanthrocapitalism,” by Matthew Bishop and Michael Green. The British are second, with 0.73 percent, while the stingiest people on the list are the French, at 0.14 percent.

(Looking away from politics, there’s evidence that one of the most generous groups in America is gays. Researchers believe that is because they are less likely to have rapacious heirs pushing to keep wealth in the family.)

When liberals see the data on giving, they tend to protest that conservatives look good only because they shower dollars on churches — that a fair amount of that money isn’t helping the poor, but simply constructing lavish spires.

It’s true that religion is the essential reason conservatives give more, and religious liberals are as generous as religious conservatives. Among the stingiest of the stingy are secular conservatives.
According to Google’s figures, if donations to all religious organizations are excluded, liberals give slightly more to charity than conservatives do. But Mr. Brooks says that if measuring by the percentage of income given, conservatives are more generous than liberals even to secular causes.

In any case, if conservative donations often end up building extravagant churches, liberal donations frequently sustain art museums, symphonies, schools and universities that cater to the well-off. (It’s great to support the arts and education, but they’re not the same as charity for the needy. And some research suggests that donations to education actually increase inequality because they go mostly to elite institutions attended by the wealthy.)

Conservatives also appear to be more generous than liberals in nonfinancial ways. People in red states are considerably more likely to volunteer for good causes, and conservatives give blood more often. If liberals and moderates gave blood as often as conservatives, Mr. Brooks said, the American blood supply would increase by 45 percent.

So, you’ve guessed it! This column is a transparent attempt this holiday season to shame liberals into being more charitable. Since I often scold Republicans for being callous in their policies toward the needy, it seems only fair to reproach Democrats for being cheap in their private donations. What I want for Christmas is a healthy competition between left and right to see who actually does more for the neediest.

Of course, given the economic pinch these days, charity isn’t on the top of anyone’s agenda. Yet the financial ability to contribute to charity, and the willingness to do so, are strikingly unrelated. Amazingly, the working poor, who have the least resources, somehow manage to be more generous as a percentage of income than the middle class.

So, even in tough times, there are ways to help. Come on liberals, redeem yourselves, and put your wallets where your hearts are.

Celebrating Devon

Devon and Frostee RuckerAs many of you know who have been perusing this site for 3+ years, my nephew Devon lost a courageous battle with Leukemia on New Years Eve of last year. He fought like a warrior for almost as long as this blog has been around. He tried traditional chemotherapy, radiation, received a bone marrow transplant, and experimental treatments when there was no choice. But unfortunately we don’t know what God has in store for us, and he was called home.

Devon’s 12th birthday would have been September 26th, and we have decided to celebrate it in a big way. What we are doing is we are sponsoring another child with Leukemia that is either being treated at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for a wish. Devon was granted a wish of his own after he was first diagnosed with the disease, and we just know that he would be ecstatic to extend the same opportunity to another child faced with the same sets of procedures and treatments as he.

We are having a raffle here locally and selling raffle tickets and our local school is sponsoring a trike-a-thon for little kids to bike around our High School track, the trike-a-thon money is going exclusively to St. Jude’s Childrens Research Hospital, as is 10% of our raffle ticket sales. Since most of the prizes are either going to be too big to ship or local to our area, I am looking for people to donate money to purchase prizes for the raffle.

If you could find it in your heart to help Celebrate Devon with us by sponsoring a child’s wish we would be ever so grateful to you. If you can just donate $5 that would be awesome, and definitely help in our worthy goal of brightening up another child’s life with Leukemia. [There is a donate button to the right of this post]

Thanks,

Ann Marie

Catholic News Service

In an important ecumenical milestone, Father James Massa, Executive Director of the U.S. Bishop’s Secretariat of Ecumenical and Inter-religious Affairs has announced that two members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have attended a Papal prayer service at St. Joseph’s Church in New York.

On April 18, two members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elders M. Russell Ballard and Quentin L. Cook took part in the historic meeting.

It’s my understanding from the article that the Catholic Church and the LDS Church have also been co-operating with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) in helping the victims of natural disasters.

Kudos to both Churches for their generous service to those in need.

Click on over and read a very fine article on this ground breaking event.

Update on Devon

My daughter Jessica and Cousin Devon 11 days apart…
Jessica and Devon

As most of you know by my blog posts over the past couple of weeks, my nephew (my brother’s second oldest child) is dying of —>Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or ALL. It is not likely that by this time tomorrow that he will be with us.
Devon June 2007
I was so fortunate to speak to him on the phone yesterday morning and hear a strong voice. I was also able to make sure that what I wished for him to have (two packs of orange tick tacks…one of his favorite treats) were given to him. He is a very special boy, one that I will always be honored to have known. I appreciate all of the monetary donations toward his funeral and burial expenses, love, thoughts, and prayers that you’ve embraced my family and me with these past couple of weeks. At this point I would just like to ask for two things, one that you hold those that you love dear and closer than ever (you never know when they might part this earth…Devon is only 11), and that you continue to pray for our family during this extremely painful time. We’re sure going to miss that kid. Thanks to all, and goodnight!

If you’re still interested in donating to “The Devon Curling Fund” you still can through the following two methods:

Last Appeal for my nephew Devon Curling and his family!

Once again I’m putting this out there…

Devon Curling
Born September 26, 1996

While you’re enjoying your holiday season. While you’re watching your kids open those Christmas Presents and you snap those pictures, there is an eleven year old boy just outside of Cincinnati OH (who happens to be my nephew) who is enjoying his last one. He’s dying of leukemia. He loses more strength every day, and becomes paler and paler. Despite all of this though, he’s enjoying this holiday. He wakes up every single morning with a smile on his face and determination to live another day, and enjoy his brothers and sisters the most he can. But, one day soon there won’t be anymore days. His body will succumb and he will no longer be with us. I know that’s harsh but it’s the truth. Devon’s family has been overstressed the past 2 1/2 yrs dealing with numerous rounds of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant, and additional attempts with other medicine to keep him alive. This has taken a financial tole as well. There is a fund that has been set up for Devon’s funeral and burial expenses. You can donate to it one of the following ways:

You can donate via credit card to my PayPal account and I will write a big check to be deposited in the fund:

Here are two stories from Cincinnati OH media outlets about Devon’s Family’s situation:

From: The Cincinnati Post —–>11-year-old’s prognosis is ‘grave’

From WLWT NBC 5 in Cincinnati OH:—–>Family Asks For Help In Boy’s Battle Against Cancer

I know that there are a lot of you who care so much about Devon and have prayed for him, and continue to pray for him and I so much appreciate it. I just wanted to appeal to your heart. Can you imagine this happening to your family, of all times at Christmas? Christmas is supposed to be that magical holiday for children, not a time of year when you have to bury them.

Thank You for your time and prayers,

Ann Marie Curling

Donate to the Red Cross to aid those affected by the Southern California Wildfires

The American Red Cross

Matt Romney posted some pretty scary fire pictures at the Five Brother’s Blog, and is encouraging people to giving to The American Red Cross so we’re following suit here at Elect Romney in 2008.

We as Americans always come together in times of crisis and help one another, lets show the victims of this tragedy just how big our hearts are by giving.

Blast from the past, three old posts on Romney worth a second look…

October 24th, 2007 | Comments Off | Posted in Charitable Giving, Family, George Romney, Israel, Speeches, This Site

This site is so huge, as is our database of posts and comments that it’s very easy to overlook older posts that mean something even today.

I’ve dug out three of those such posts, and am giving them a second look.

Lessons of the Father - This one’s a great post, goes over Romney’s life time line and discusses the influence his father has had and continues to have on him.
Romney pledges salary to charity if elected president - I’m not sure how many of you are aware of this, but as the post says Governor Romney will be donating his entire salary as President to charity.
EXCERPTS FROM GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY’S REMARKS AT THE SEVENTH ANNUAL HERZLIYA CONFERENCE - An excellent speech given in Israel.

Surge of Support for Our Troops

August 20th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in 2008 Election, Charitable Giving, Mitt Romney

I know that Governor Romney has been calling for a surge of support for our troops for some time now, but a recent item for sale at the Romney Shop prompted me to finally blog something about it.

In case you missed it Governor Romney called for a surge of support for our men and women serving in the military.

Join the Surge of Support for our Troops!

When I was recently in Colorado Springs, I spoke with a man whose son is serving in Iraq. He said the criticism at home of the war effort was demoralizing. He made the point that as our fighting men and women are defending our liberties overseas, we as Americans need to stand by them.

Afterwards, my nephew suggested there should be a “surge of support” to go along with the troop surge. I told him that I couldn’t agree more.

Join the Surge of Support for our troops. Visit one or more these organizations and send your support to our military men and women who are making such tremendous sacrifices for the safety of all Americans.

Governor Romney is leading by example in this surge of support. From the Boston Globe:

BOSTON –A father’s concern about U.S. support for the military surge in Iraq has prompted Republican Mitt Romney to both make a $25,000 donation to a variety of military support agencies and urge Americans to engage in a similar display of patriotism.

The money will be divided between USO Care Packages, the Fisher House, A Soldiers Wish List, Packages from Home, Operation Thank You, Operation Shoebox and America Supports You.

And now, the bumper sticker that prompted me to blog this:

Mitt Romney bumper sticker surge of support

The bad news is that it costs $5. The good news is:

Your full $5 purchase price will be donated to organizations that support our military men and women.

Seems a convenient way to support our troops and our candidate at the same time. Smart thinking.

Romney pledges salary to charity if elected president

Like his job as Governor and Chairman of the Salt Lake Olympic Committee before…

From The Boston Herald:

DOVER, N.H. - Republican Mitt Romney, conceding that his business career helped him make more money than he expected, said Tuesday he would likely give his presidential salary - and more - to charity.
