Romney Rouses Values Voters

September 19th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in 2010 Election, C-Span, Congress, Conservatism, Mitt Romney, Pro-life

Some of the Republican Party’s social conservative elites gave Mitt Romney a warm and enthusiastic reception at the Value Voters Summit today.

In typical Romney style, he emphasized the issues that the Republican wing of the Republican Party cares about. Business. Pro Life. Military strength. Family. Freedom. Tax cuts. Individual responsibility. The polar opposite of what we have been hearing these past eight months.

If you would like to view his speech, it’s on C-SPAN’s website now.

Mitt Romney used an address Saturday at a social conservative conference to critique President Obama on fiscal and defense issues, largely ignoring such issues as abortion and gay rights.

Speaking to a ballroom full of conservative activists at the Family Research Council’s annual Values Voters conference, Romney spent most of his time laying out a broad indictment of Obama, depicting an administration kinder to foe than friend that is spending the country into ruin.

The 2008 presidential candidate spent much of that campaign courting the sort of Christian-right voters who attend such events as this and exert considerable influence on the Republican presidential primary process. But this speech was largely tailored towards addressing issues driving the current political debate, something he has done in other forums this year.

This is not to say that the former Massachusetts governor entirely avoided the sort of hot-button issues that galvanize social conservatives. He opened his remarks by acknowledging “the fundamental rights of every single person — including the right to life itself.” And in discussing Obama’s back-to-school speech to high school students earlier this month, he suggested the president should have raised the issue of out-of-wedlock births – a cause long championed by Romney and his wife, Ann.

But those were mostly asides in a 20-minute speech that could have been delivered before any GOP audience on the party’s rubber chicken circuit.

There were gibes at Obama the orator – “He can spin a speech but he can’t spin his record,” Romney said – and outrage at a foreign policy viewed by many conservatives as one that smacks of apologizing for America.

Recalling that Obama had told an Arab TV station that America had tried to dictate matters to the world, Romney struck back: “No, Mr. President, America has freed other nations from dictators.”
The once and perhaps future presidential candidate also seized on the news of the week, saying “the president’s decision this week to walk away from our commitment to missile defense in Europe is alarming and dangerous.”

And he drew a standing ovation from many when he claimed that Obama treats America’s enemies better than the nation’s friends.

Rudy Interrupted

I’m not sure how many of you have seen this footage. During a speech to the NRA this week Mr. Giuliani got a phone call, and when he answered the phone it turned out to be his wife Judy. The amazing thing is that it seemed at least from watching that he’d rather keep talking with her, or she at the very least didn’t care all that much about what he was doing because their phone call lasted pretty long when you’re considering what he was doing. To me it looked a lot like, “look at me, I’m special…I even get phone calls even while giving speeches” type of thing. I couldn’t believe he didn’t leave his cell phone with an aid before giving the speech. He appeared to get a kick out of the fact that he did it. I can’t imagine Gov. Romney ever doing a thing like this. He’s as big of a class act as they come.

Anyway, I never thought I’d ever see anything like this in my life (heck, I never would have dreamed up a scenario like this).

Here it is, Rudy Interrupted!

Few obervations after watching tonights Road to the White House on C-Span…

First, Tommy Thompson is an elitist JERK. And if that sounds rude, so be it. I saw him at the Raddison in NH on June 6th, and this person who looked like a kid comes up to him and asks him something to the affect are you interested in keeping New Hampshire’s Primary first in the nation, and are you willing to go on video to proclaim it. Well, he pretty much blew this kid off and didn’t give him the time of day.

Now Romney on the other hand gave this kid some major attention, and the kid walked away happy.

Also, later on in the episode they show Thompson visiting this business. The first thing he talks about is how he LOVES to go into businesses because the first thing he gets to see is a smiling pretty woman. That first of all just made me irritated (not upset mind you just irritated). But then when he finds out he has to obey the company’s regulations and sign into the place and wear this badge and protective gear he acts all like that’s beneath him. He shouts at some other person to sign him in and he takes his badge. He didn’t seem all that interested in the business truthfully. He just so irritated me.

Now two other points. Despite the fact that I am wholeheartedly behind Romney 100%, and virtually nothing could change that. I was really impressed by both Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo. I saw the entire interview with Tancredo where he talks about McCain and Giuliani pulling out of Ames because of fear of loss. He really seems like a great guy. I can so see him being Romney’s VP especially with his Immigration stances. I also was pleased with Duncan Hunter. He talked about how his son had joined the Marines the day after 9/11, and how he (the son) had decided to run for office just before he was deployed back to the middle east. I just really got a good vibe from him.

Anyway, I guess that’s it.
