Romney Wins Another Poll

April 30th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Mitt Romney

Utahns would rather see Mitt Romney than Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. in the White House, but they would support either Republican over President Barack Obama in 2012, a new Deseret News/KSL-TV poll shows.

A majority of Utahns, 55 percent, said they preferred Romney to their governor. But just 32 percent chose Huntsman over the former Salt Lake City Olympics leader who lost his bid for the GOP presidential nomination last year.

Both Romney and Huntsman would easily beat the Democratic president in Utah, the poll conducted Monday by Dan Jones & Associates found. The poll of 254 Utahns statewide has a margin of error of plus or minus 6.2 percent.

Asked about the results, Huntsman suggested they were little more than “fun reading” during an interview Wednesday with the Deseret News. “Republicans are pretty dominant,” he said when pressed.

The governor had nothing but praise for Romney, who won Utah’s GOP primary with 90 percent of the vote. Huntsman had backed the party’s eventual nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Romney “is a good candidate. He’s run once and will probably run again. And I probably won’t,” Huntsman said. “He’s a good man and he’s earned every bit of support he’s gotten in the state. And I say that with all sincerity.”

FACT CHECK: Obama’s job, deficit claims are iffy

Obama:  Trust Me

OBAMA: “We began by passing a Recovery Act that has already saved or created over 150,000 jobs.” - from news conference.

THE FACTS: This assertion is dubious on several levels. For starters, the U.S. has lost more than 1.2 million jobs since Obama took office, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Even if Obama’s stimulus bill saved or created as many jobs as he says, that number is dwarfed by the number of recent job losses.

But Obama’s number is murky, at best. The White House has not yet announced how it intends to count jobs created by the stimulus bill. Obama’s number is based on a job-counting formula that his economists have developed but have not made public. Until that formula is announced - probably in the coming week or so - there’s no way to assess its accuracy.

Whatever the formula, economists who study job creation say it will require some creative math. That’s because Obama has lumped “jobs saved” in with “jobs created.” Even economists for organizations that stand to benefit from the stimulus concede it probably is impossible to estimate saved jobs because that would require calculating a hypothetical: how many people would have lost their jobs without the stimulus.

FAA Memo: Feds Knew NYC Flyover Would Cause Panic

Like Rush Limbaugh might say: “Folks, you can’t make this stuff up!” Is there ANY ADULT SUPERVISION in the Obama Whitehouse at all?!?!

~~John Cronin~~

Threatened Federal Sanctions Against NYPD, Secret Service, FBI & Mayor’s Office If Secret Ever Got Out

New York (CBS)—A furious President Barack Obama ordered an internal review of Monday’s low flying photo op over the Statue of Liberty.

Furious Obama Apologizes: “It Will Never Happen Again”

CBS 2 HD has discovered the feds will have plenty to question.

Federal officials knew that sending two fighter jets and Air Force One to buzz ground zero and Lady Liberty might set off nightmarish fears of a 9/11 replay, but they still ordered the photo-op kept secret from the public.

In a memo obtained by CBS 2 HD the Federal Aviation Administration’s James Johnston said the agency was aware of “the possibility of public concern regarding DOD (Department of Defense) aircraft flying at low altitudes” in an around New York City. But they demanded total secrecy from the NYPD, the Secret Service, the FBI and even the mayor’s office and threatened federal sanctions if the secret got out.

What are your feelings on federal officials demanding the NYC flyover be kept secret by the NYPD and the mayor’s office?

“To say that it should not be made public knowing that it might scare people it’s just confounding,” Sen. Charles Schumer said. “It’s what gives Washington and government a bad name. It’s sheer stupidity.”

The flyover — apparently ordered by the White House Office of Military Affairs so it would have souvenir photos of Air Force One with the Statue of Liberty in the background — had President Obama seeing red. He ordered a probe and apologized.

“It was a mistake. It will never happen again,” President Obama said.

The NYPD was so upset about the demand for secrecy that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly vowed never to follow such a directive again and he accused the feds of inciting fears of a 9/11 replay.

“Did it show any insensitivity to the psychic wounds New York City has after 9/11? Absolutely. No questions about it. It was quite insensitive.”

The cost of the frivolous flight was about $60,000 an hour and that was just for Air Force One. That doesn’t include the cost of the two F-16s that came along.

The mayoral aide who neglected to tell Mayor Michael Bloomberg about it was reprimanded.

OCS Prep weekend reduces the initial shock of drill instructors

Here’s a good article on what USMC Officer candidates face when they attend the Officer Candidate School prep weekend. My son Pat is in Iowa as I write this, no doubt sleep deprived, sore, exhausted, but hopefully with another maturing experience under his belt.

I just emailed him in reply to his forwarding this article to me and I told him that we have scheduled a coffee klatch/ family meeting in the kitchen for this evening and that his mother and I expect a complete debriefing.

9TH MARINE CORPS DISTRICT —

One-hundred eighty-six of the Marine Corps’ future leaders left their protected collegiate lifestyles for a three-day, sleep-deprived, physically-exhausting introduction to the Marine Corps.

The candidates arrived at Fort McCoy, Wis.— their commitment to the Corps still untested—dressed in business-casual civilian attire. Their large suitcases, of which more than a few appeared to need the weight of a friend to properly close, were stuffed with the niceties of modern life. Looks of optimistic eagerness filled many of the candidate’s faces, like the face of a child first approaching to Disney World. These men and women came to the Officer Candidates School Prep Weekend because they wanted to learn. They wanted a taste of what leading Marines would be like, and a chance to digest their decision. They were excited.

“The OCS Prep weekend really helps to reduce the initial shock of dealing with the drill instructors,” said Maj. Bryan Hill, 9th Marine Corps District Aviation Assistant for Officer Procurement. “It also shows them how important teamwork really is in a structured environment. They are also able to meet other poolees from the district so when they show up at OCS a basic team structure is already formed.”

The candidates’ excitement might have been dampened were they informed of the reality that many of them would never complete OCS.

“Although the intent of OCS Prep is not to get them to quit, it sometimes opens their eyes as to what they are going to be facing at OCS,” said Hill. “It is definitely a gut check and sometimes they determine that they don’t have the intestinal fortitude they thought they did. If the drive isn’t there, the chance of them surviving OCS is pretty slim.”

Now seated in an auditorium, sheltered from the wind-driven Wisconsin climate, the candidates were just minutes away from their introduction to the Corps .Many would soon wish they had stayed at home.

Three drill instructors entered the classroom under the guides of an ordered march. Their faces fought instinct, as they twitched with controlled rage. Alfred Hitchcock used to say it was the time just before one sees the monster that is the most horrifying. Then, with a soft-spoken order, the candidates where turned over to the drill instructors for the first time. The room exploded with movement as the candidates where instructed to go outside. The drill instructors moved with a speed and ferocity that can only come from training. The candidates’ faces reflected a uniform fear. The OCS Prep Weekend had begun.

“The candidates receive mental preparation for the shock and pace of Marine Corps Officer Training,” said Maj. Charles Miles, 9th MCD Aisststant for Officer Procurement. “They also are introduced to some basic military skills such as drill, land navigation and rope climbing. They also learn about Marine Corps History and our customs and courtesy.”

The three-day journey was intense, and the cold, wet weather did not comfort the weary candidates who, despite the numerous trials, remained motivated and excited about the larger challenge of OCS.

“I thought the whole evolution was outstanding,” said Staff Sgt. Shaun Wright, Officer Candidates School sergeant instructor. “For the most part (the candidates) were motivated and ready to whip it on. One of the challenges for these kids is being able to make a decision. They need to understand it is better to make any decision rather than no decision. But a lot of these kids have never failed at anything.”

Mental preparation is vital to success at OCS, but Miles said that physical readiness is one of the easiest ways to prevent failure.

“Most candidates can recover from the initial shock and adapt quickly to the OCS lifestyles,” said Miles. “However, if one does not go to OCS physically prepared, they are going home.”

It was time for the candidates to go home, but not in the disgust of failure but with a better understanding of what a future in the Corps would entail. Their tired faces again reflected excitement. This time, however, it was at the prospect of a full night’s sleep.

GOP Convention Draws Big Crowd

The Daily Herald reports that an overflow crowd of Republicans attended a county convention in Utah yesterday and the speakers whipped up an enthusiastic crowd of partisans ready to help their party take back Congress in 2010.

~~John Cronin~~

Joe Pyrah - Daily Herald

There was plenty of red meat for the core of the reddest county in the reddest state to chew on Saturday.

“Welcome fellow terrorists!” belted out U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, referencing a recent Department of Homeland Security Report that warned of “right-wing extremism.”

The county’s organizing convention drew nearly double what it has the three previous years for a number of reasons. Much of the party’s leadership was stepping down leaving elections wide-open, and the party base has been riled up by the so-called “tea parties” and fears of creeping socialism.

Chaffetz, a first-term representative, got a standing ovation and berated President Barack Obama for making stops around the world and “apologizing for being a military and economic superpower.”

Party leaders

The race for party leadership was close in most cases, but none so close as the vice chairman position which was decided by just 10 votes of 820 cast. Mark Cluff held off Lowell Nelson to retain that seat.

Taylor Oldroyd will be the party’s chairman for the next two years after besting Steve Diamond 440-391. Oldroyd said that leaders need to “energetically articulate that we are the party of ideas.”

Lisa Shepherd was selected as party secretary after defeating Matt Thompson, who was endorsed by all the county’s elected officials.

“First, when I’m the secretary, I’m going to schedule a larger venue,” Shepherd said to the packed house.

Lynn Taylor beat Ben Smith for the treasurer’s seat 592-236.

Fire it up

Chaffetz wasn’t the only one to hammer at Democrats and the Obama administration.

Sen. Bob Bennett warned of the president’s socialism and those who have “embraced their attractive new president as an individual” though maybe not his policies.

He struck a somber cord, citing recent polls that show the majority of Americans believe the country is on the right track for the first time in more than five years.

“I don’t think that’s the sentiment here today,” he said. “But we must face that reality.”

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said Republicans need to be like Paul Revere after the original tea party. Instead of running and hiding, Revere went door to door warning colonists of the coming trouble.

Ronald Reagan Award

Former U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon was given the party’s Ronald Reagan Award.

Cannon, defeated by Rep. Jason Chaffetz in 2008, was honored for his “unwavering love of his God, family and country,” said outgoing party chairwoman Marian Monnahan.

Cannon took the opportunity to warn Republicans against demonizing people and said that he would be working to find ways to create civil dialogue to debate ideas.

“Congress is a complex place, America is a complex place,” Cannon said. “We have to stop assassinating characters and start talking about what we believe.”

Weekly Wrap Up

Here’s our weekly look back on some of the top stories in the news.

Miss California hits it out of the park

Nearing the end of the Miss America competition, Miss California is asked her opinion on gay marriages. We all know what the politically correct answer is. To her credit, Miss California didn’t bow her knee to the thought police and diplomatically answered that for her and her family, marriage is defined as a union between one man and one woman. It is a sign of the times that this is even controversial, but that is where we are at. On a positive note, it is so encouraging to know that there are people like her out there who choose principals over prizes. She has chosen the highest prize. She didn’t sell out in order to win the competition and receive a fake crown, she has chosen the crown that comes from remaining faithfull to her core beliefs, in spite of the pressure to genuflect to a philosophy that will tear this country apart if it continues to take root. She is a wonderful young woman and I wish her all the best.

 CIA Memos

Here’s a tough question for you. What is President Obama’s position on the possible prosecution of former senior Bush administration officials? If I am following this at all, it is something like this: 1. “I am opposed to prosecuting these officials.” 2. “I am in favor of prosecuting these officials.” 3. “I am opposed to prosecuting these officials.” 4. “Never mind.”

What must be going through the minds of these men and women this weekend as they wonder whether are not the Left is trying to ‘gin up a witch hunt that will wreck their careers and their finances as they are put in the position of spending millions of dollars to defend themselves for doing their duty, after they received guidance from the Justice Department on the legality of their methods.

My New Pal, the Venezuelan Dictator

Weren’t those heartwarming pictures of President Obama and the South American dictator gripping and grinning? The book exchange, the photo ops. What’s next, shooting hoops with Kim Jong Il?

 Buyer’s Remorse in Massachusetts

Latest polling indicates that the voters of the beautiful state of Massachusetts yearn for the return of former Governor Mitt Romney. It seems that two years of Deval Patrick it more than even the citizens of the bluest of blue states can stomach. We at CTR can feel your pain, but we have first dibs on Gov. Romney for President in 2012. I can give some unsolicited advise to the voters of that state and I only need two words: Jeff Beatty.

First 100 Days of the Obama Presidency

Winston Churchill had a very famous quote that he used to describe the debt of gratitude owed by Britons to the Royal Air Force during the “Battle of Britain.” He said: “Never in the history of mankind has so much been owed by so many to so few.” I’d like to adapt that quote to Obama and his administration’s First 100 Days: “Never in the course of American history has so much damage been done to so many by so few.”

Republicans Give Romney Edge Over Gingrich

April 24th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Mitt Romney

Both men reportedly have their eyes on the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, but right now Mitt Romney, who ran unsuccessfully last year, has the edge over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, one of the GOP’s most formidable strategists.

Eighty-two percent (82%) of Republican voters have a favorable view of Romney, including 43% whose opinion of him is Very Favorable. Only 12% of GOP voters have an unfavorable opinion of the former Massachusetts governor, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.
