Family Business

Since the end of the 2008 election, there has been much hand-wringing in various quarters over whether or not Mitt Romney will ever run for the Presidency again. The article below is very lengthy, covering several of the big family names in American politics, so I excerpted just the part that pertained to Gov. Romney. I can tell you, from the internet chatter that I see, it is generally accepted as a given that Mitt will run again in 2012.

I’ll grant you that, especially in hard left circles, the prospect of another Romney run in 2012 is as welcome as the news from your dentist that you need a root canal. Be that as it may, although nothing can be guaranteed this far in advance and we will of course have to wait for Gov. Romney to declare his intentions, one way or the other, my own personal opinion is that Gov. Romney enjoys the blood sport of politics and relishes the thought of getting back in the game in 2012.

If that is what he and his family decide, we here at Committed to Romney will re-start the campaign with glee and abandon!

While 2012 is far off, at least one scion is already prominently mentioned as a presidential contender: Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, made a credible bid at the Republican nomination in 2008, and is widely expected to run again. His father, George Romney, first achieved fame as chief executive of the now-defunct American Motors, and parlayed his CEO reputation into six years as governor of Michigan. He sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1968, until a gaffe made him a national laughingstock (he said that a trip to Vietnam had given him a “brainwashing”). His son Mitt followed in his father’s path, building a successful business career before entering politics and mounting a losing but respectable challenge to Senator Edward Kennedy. Romney then burnished his managerial reputation by taking over the administration of the troubled 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. He returned to Massachusetts to be elected governor, where he began a shift to the right, which continued during his bid for the Republican nomination last year. Mitt Romney shows many of his clan’s more positive attributes - good looks, a knack for business (an asset in troubled economic times), a large personal fortune, an appealing family — but it remains to be seen whether his devotion to Mormonism will serve as an obstacle, now more to those on the Left than evangelicals, to his further ambitions.

Thanks, John. We will indeed support Romney with guts and gusto!

Gee, I wonder when Huckabee’s name is mentioned as a 2012 contender if his “Baptist” devotion is also mentioned as a possible obstacle, now more to those on the left, as well as independents and evangelically-shunned Republicans!

And, Obama’s ‘Reverend-Wright–white-people-are-almost-human- G*% D#*&-America-religion’ didn’t faze the electorate on the left and a few on the right. Why is America so blind and bigoted that Romney’s moral, generous, hard-working, service-oriented, Christ-centered religion is viewed as blight on his character?! Romney is the kind of man we need at the helm of the United States.

OPEN YOUR EYES, AMERICA. SEE HYPOCRISY SWIRL!

I am so perplexed by the fact that Mitt’s religion could be held against him……We believe in Jesus, he is our saviour, he died for our sins, and we rightfully express those words over and over again….Mitt was given the Beckett Award, an honor to Mitt and Ann for upholding their religious beliefs….Mitt is well qualified, one of the hardest workers out here, wonderful personality, so well educated, knows business, has had wonderful success in the private sector….no silver spoon, he and Ann lived in their first apartment, in a basement….His determination and sticktoitiveness made him who he is today…..he will we hope and pray be our next President…2012 the good Lord willing……

One of the things that I learned from the last election is that republicans lost the public relations battle badly. Slick and polished propaganda worked over character and accomplishments. Huckabee and Palin won’t stand a chance against the media or public opinion should this come up again. Putting Palin or Huckabee on the ticket in 2012 will only work if Obama is a complete national disaster/laughing stock. With Romney we’ve got a winnable candidate, that is if we want to win or just continue with the infighting that MSNBC was only happy to point out last week. Winning independents back is critical to the next election but agreeing to preserve the principles that satisfy our base is equally essential to our win. Romney is the only candidate so far that can do this.

Mitt’s religion as a negative is just a Media build up, most people don’t care about politics or religion. By how much of a percentage of the electorate could be affected by mormonism?

I am willing to bet that no more than 2% of the electorate voted against Romney because of his brand of faith. Most of the electorate were concerned of his true colors, they did not see him as genuine. Most negative thoughts on Romney were that he was an oportunist more than anything else.

By 2012 his credibility will have grown, so will his name and message. I too hope that us as followers can make him an unbeatable candidate this next time around.

Another possibility is to be called to the quorom of the ‘12 with the now vacant seat from Elder Wirthlin. I know that isn’t likely to happen, but sure would be interesting.

  5. Chris Says:

I don’t know. We’ll find out in April who fills the big shoes of Wirthlin.

  6. Brent Says:

I would not think Romney would be called to the quorum of the 12 without having served as a mission president. But with his wife having breast cancer I do not think that is possible yet.
