Report: McCain Suspends Campaign, Turns Attention to Financial Crisis

September 24th, 2008 Posted in Business, John McCain, wall street

Drudge reports that McCain has suspended his campaign in order to devote more time to the bailout plan. One headline I just saw ( haven’t read the article ) said only 4 Republicans have signed on to support the bill that Congress is working on.

I hope for the countries’ sake that this is not a publicity stunt and a ruse to look “Presidential.” If any politician plays fast and loose with the public in a time of unprecedented financial danger, he will be swept away in November.

I don’t envy the nominees of either party at this critical juncture. To try to get your arms around a plan as massive as the one proposed by Sec’y Paulson and Fed chief Bernanke has got to be a daunting challenge, even if you had adequate time to consider all the details and make the decision to either rally behind the plan as proposed or do your best to change it.

Keep these men in your prayers, that they may be guided by Divine Providence as they attempt to restore confidence in the nation’s banking system.

How about divine providence that will ensure that neither of these dim wits will have anything to do with the economic bail out plan?

    EXCLUSIVE: LETTERMAN MOCKS MCCAIN CANCELLATION
    Wed Sep 24 2008 17:41:58 ET

David Letterman tells audience that McCain called him today to tell him he had to rush back to DC to deal with the economy.

Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, “Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?”

Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, “You don’t suspend your campaign. This doesn’t smell right. This isn’t the way a tested hero behaves.” And he joked: “I think someone’s putting something in his metamucil.”

“He can’t run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?”

“What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We’ve got a guy like that now!”

    Developing…

Next Question: Will McCain find a graceful way of dumping Palin and going for the real gold?

Actually, I think John McCain did what he should have done - go to do his job for this
country in crisis as a Senator required to make a decision in this matter. He is the designated leader of the Republican Party now and the representatives in Washington cannot come together to get anything done. They are all children who must be led.

Can someone convince McCain to make this suspension permanent so we can put Mitt in as political pinch hitter and actually win this thing?

John, I particularly appreciate your comments this evening. I don’t think the average Joe or Jane understands the precipitous place our nation is in. America’s perils now are massive, complicated, and far-reaching. One person isn’t going to have all the answers.

This is a time for all of us to be real Americans. We need to humble ourselves and ask the Almighty to shed some grace on all those making such critical decisions at this time.

    - Actually America isn’t in such a precarious position. There is still a lot of private money that could be loaned. Banks, and moneyed institutions would rather access federal capital. When people are afraid you can extract a lot more!

    - McCain went back to DC because the majority of Republicans were not going along with the bail out package.

    - Bush used his speech to address the Republicans in congress and provide cover. If he doesn’t get certain provisions the President indicated that he will veto the bill.

    - McCain’s trip to DC was a political stunt that attempted to add shock value and cover while he went and rallied the Republican members of congress who can’t stand him and are or were not on board. Also, McCain is sinking in the polls because of the credit crisis.

    - I think the market will rebound for a few days after congress signs onto the bill. Then people will take a second look at the economy and still see that it is in weak shape. The market will adjust downward again, I believe. This may continue to be a problem for McCain.

    - The meeting between McCain, Obama and Bush is theater that is meaningless. The house is already working on a plan and McCain parachuted into the process to also claim credit according to CNBC.

    - The Republicans who are having serious reservations about the bail out plan are conservatives.

    - Does anyone remember the last two bail outs of major proportions when the FED had to step in?

    - Do the continue bail outs actually undermine the economy?

iF McCain suspended his campaign, why did he allow his commericials to air and his campaign posts continue campaigning for him. It was just a political move that we all can see through.

  13. Tracey Says:

This may not have been a very smart move.
