Now that the economy is such a big deal…

September 24th, 2008 Posted in Mitt Romney

Kiwi columnist from New Zealand says what all of us are thinking:

Somewhere in Massachusetts, Mitt Romney might be having a quiet chuckle to himself.

The man who was once favoured to be John McCain’s vice-presidential pick - before the Republican nominee banked sharply right with surprise wing-woman Sarah Palin - has probably noticed how the lie of the land has suddenly changed.

Last week as McCain flailed about on the economy, a running mate who was a businessman, Olympics entrepreneur, former governor of a state of 6.4 million and Washington ‘outsider’ might have made more political sense than a ‘hockey mom’ governor from Alaska.

McCain, who has admitted that economics is not his strong suit, spurned his chance to pick a number two who could have talked credibly about measures to aid the ailing economy.

Don’t get me wrong. I think McCain and Palin are way better than the alternative, but I must admit that neither of them is giving me warm fuzzy feelings as I hear them talk about the economic crisis.

It’s becoming so clear to me now why the dems were so adamant that Romney not get the nomination. He would have been an incredible force with the economy tanking as it is. It’s too bad that the evangelicals in Iowa ruined it for him and the moderates in New Hampshire sealed his fate. Yes, evil does exist. To heck with this party. I’m voting Obama.

“evil does exist…I’m voting Obama” That would make a funny ad.

  3. Casey Says:

Where Sarah Palin gave McCain a bump, Romney would have given him a steady increase in the polls straight through election day. Romney definitely isn’t as exciting as her, but worried people don’t give a crap about exciting. They want peace of mind and a confidence in the leadership, and that is what Romney would have given. Too bad.

  4. John Cronin Says:

Nobody ever accused McCain of being a rocket scientist. Romney in 2012!

  5. SED Says:

    Romney/Jindal 2012!!!

The smartest men in ANY room.

  6. Chris Says:

Jindal laying low. Smart man! I wish McCain could find a ‘graceful’ way out of the Palinpanderpick, so Mitt could step in and bat cleanup. but this team is so ‘mavericky’. America First? Naaaaa. Them first, then Americans can get the scraps and pay the bills.

    SED - Right On!

Rasmussen has Obama up by 2 in North Carolina today. It could be a blip or a sign of things to come.

  9. Tami Says:

I couldn’t have said it better David. I think Mc/Palin is much, much better than the alternative so I of course, will vote for them… but there are definitely NO warm and fuzzy feelings here either.

I still just can’t believe that Mc let Romney get away!! What an asset he would be right now. He is sooooooooo needed!!! *SIGH*

Will the bailout solution(s) end up establishing a framework where it incubates a catalyst that creates another impending financial crisis at some future point?

It appears that as a government intervenes in the market the more government is required, or expected, in the future to act on behalf of certain industries. Are efficiencies within various aspects of the financial industry increased as a result of government intervention, or regulation? Can it be or is it that government bailouts should be considered as part of the risk quotient in certain businesses?

no warm fuzzies here, either. it seriously makes me sick to my stomach when i think about our loss of such a great leader. oh the leadership and president we could have had. a guy like mitt comes around every couple decades (i truly believe that), and the gop passed. and now more than ever, is when we need “mr. economic genius” himself, mitt romney, in the white house. why do i keep feeling like it could be a long four years ahead?

    save us mitt!!!

  12. Paulee Says:

Even Cooper on CNN said Where would Mac’s poll numbers be if he had Mitt Romney on the ticket right now? Well, We all know! The rest blew it!!!!!!!!!!

  13. EVELIO PEREZ Says:

Nothing warm or fuzzy , just a sick feeling in my gut telling me that we are in deep trouble either way. The more I think of our desperate finantial situation , the more I know that America got it wrong. ( BIGOTS WON )
    We are sooooooooooooo SCREWED ……
    Romney 2012

Fellow choir members, Does any body know where I can get a bumper sticker that says, “Don’t blame me, I voted for Romney”. I would need it to last for four years. My yard sigh is duct taped together and won’t last that long. - P

  15. Sue B Says:

I think that if McCain has any sense, he’d find a way for Sarah Palin to gracefully bow out (find some sort of reason why she is urgently needed elsewhere) and then say that, with the current economic situation we are in, he has asked Mitt Romney to come on board and Romney has agreed to serve his country in this capacity. This situation is tailor-made for Mitt. If he can’t solve it, no one can. Unfortunately, McCain’s ego likely won’t allow him to do that. We all lose.

  16. Britt Says:

On Aug 28th,I went to sleep smiling , thinking about seeing McCain announce it’s Mitt the next day. I woke up to here, “Mitt’s not there, but the Governor of Alaska is”
It was purely political. He wanted the base and Hillary women. So, let’s do it again,Senator-Sarah didn’t realize how hard it would be on her family, blah, blah, blah so home she goes–and in this time of great economic crisis-we need
Mitt Romney—-there, I wrote it for you.
I still can not believe, however, how you lifelong Repubs (I just joined)let McCain be chosen over Mitt.
Or did either party really have any say at all-
God Bless America. Be vigilant, people.

  17. peter combes Says:

Does this really surprise anyone. Mitt said it was broken. So what we got was politicians instead of a man who fixes problems.

Hang on for the ride. Hope we can last four years.

Let’s do a better job of pickin’ next time around. Hope you know who is there. Hope the media doesn’t control it again. - P

  18. Brady Says:

I say we write Mitt in! I can’t vote for those two yahoo’s on either side. It is painful to watch them debate. What is in a name? Both candidates have names that remind me of evil. Barrack Hussein Osama and Mc”Cain”. That can’t be good! :) http://www.writemittin.com.
