  1. Stephen Says:

    Pointlets on Mitt [Jay Nordlinger]

    1. The former governor of Massachusetts came out blazing against the Eastern Establishment! “For decades, the Washington sun has been rising in the east — Washington has been looking to the eastern elites, to the editorial pages of the Times and the Post, and to the broadcasters from the coast. If America really wants change, it’s time to look for the sun in the west, ’cause it’s about to rise and shine from Arizona and Alaska!”

Agnewesque — and Goldwaterian — but fine.

1.5. By “the Times and the Post,” he did not mean the Washington Times and the New York Post, I assure you!

1.75. It was probably not quite right to pair the Post’s editorial page with that of the Times — better to have cited the Boston Globe, a paper Governor Romney knows a lot about!

    2. “Is a government liberal or conservative that puts the interests of the teachers union ahead of the needs of our children?” I must say that got my anti-NEA juices flowing. (And I ain’t talking the National Endowment for the Arts, although we could talk that, too.) I also believe it was fairly gutsy, politically.

    3. “Is a Congress liberal or conservative that stops nuclear power plants and off-shore drilling, making us more and more dependent on Middle East tyrants?” Bull’s-eye.

    4. Mitt kept up in this vein, saying that government in Washington — certainly the Washington establishment — is essentially liberal. This is quite aside from who happens to occupy the White House. I was reminded of something Reagan said in 1984. His opponents kept going on about “change,” and how it was time for a change. Reagan, with some irritation, responded, “We are the change.”

And he was exactly right, of course.

    5. Said Mitt, “They think we have the biggest and strongest economy in the world because of our government. They’re wrong. America is strong because of the ingenuity and entrepreneurship and hard work of the American people.” Simple, and perhaps even simplistic. But basic and important.

    6. Here was one of the best lines of the entire convention, I thought: “We strengthen our people and our economy when we preserve and promote opportunity. Opportunity is what lets hope become reality.” This states a fundamental truth. And it corrects and rebukes the Democratic nominee.

    7. “America cannot long lead the family of nations if we fail the family here at home!” That, I’m afraid, was hokey — hokily put. A false note in a sound speech.

    8. “Democrats want to use the slowdown as an excuse to do what their special interests are always begging for: higher taxes, bigger government, and less trade with other nations.” True, true. “It’s the same path Europe took a few decades ago. It leads to moribund growth and double-digit unemployment.”

I was hoping that someone would point out the similarity between today’s Democratic party and the Western European Left — and Romney did it.

    9. You might regard what follows as red meat — and it is. But, in my mouth, it was pure honey: “[We must] stand up to the Tyrannosaurus appetite of government unions!” Bravo, Mitt, and thank you.

    10. This was a hard-hitting point, but a fair, right, and necessary point, too, I think: “Did you hear any Democrats talk last week about the threat from radical, violent jihad?” I did not, and I watched a lot. Further on in the speech, “At Saddleback, after Barack Obama dodged and ducked every direct question, John McCain hit the nail on the head: Radical violent Islam is evil, and he will defeat it! Republicans prefer straight talk to politically correct talk!”

    Bracing, rude (maybe), and correct.

    11. “Just like you, there has never been a day when I was not proud to be an American. We inherited the greatest nation in the history of the earth.” A little crude, in its anti-Michelle thrust, but understandable and acceptable.

    12. Mitt was outshone last night, by Sarah and maybe a couple of others. But it could not have been otherwise. And I thought he acquitted himself very well. The Repubs were right to put him up there. And I hope very much that his political career — his office-seeking career — is not yet over.

  2. Matthew Kilburn Says:

I’m looking to gauge interest in a Romney 2012 site - I’ve put together a mock-up image of what it would (hopefully) look like: http://img145.imageshack.us/my.php?image=romneyni6.jpg

How many people would be interested in contributing to such a site.

While the main focus would be Romney, supporting Conservative causes and candidates would also be a main focus.

  3. MK in Arizona Says:

Matthew, I would love to be able to go to a site like yours. I too I looking towards the 2012 campaign now that Mitt was looked over for VP. Just a little comment about your site - I think you meant 2008 election not the 2004 election.

  4. Matthew Kilburn Says:

I did - but that is just an image mock-up. I want to get some committment before I start the process of coding the %$#! thing (I have little experience in that, so it will take me a long time to do it).

  5. Douglas M White Says:

    I’m interested.

  6. amanda Says:

cool site idea–how can you go wrong with all things romney!? =). although, i don’t know what kind of chance he has at winning against mccain’s second term in 2012 (if, of course, mccain wins). i would almost rather have 8 years of mccain/palin, then have another 8 years of romney. isn’t it pretty rare for a republican to beat out another republican when he’s running for second term of the presidency? thoughts?

  7. amanda Says:

by the way, i thought mitt did an AWESOME job in his speech. i only wish this convention was more about him this time around! oh well. at this point i’m just focused on stopping the radical, #1 liberal in the senate, barack obama.

  8. Chris Says:

Wander in the wilderness with me folks. It’ll be fun. 2 years and we gear up. I’ll bring the marshmellows, you bring the chocolate. We’ll split the grhamm crackers.

  9. SED Says:

    7 days.

7 days ago from today Sarah Palin entered the national political scene. Michael Reagan has called her the reincarnation of his father. Rush Limbaugh calls her The Leader of the Conservative Movement and is now praising John McCain. There is an energy in the party that we have not seen in years. It’s only been 7 days.

We all love Mitt Romney on this site, but I am starting to believe that the likelihood of him ever being POTUS is 0% if Palin/McCain wins. It’s 30% if they lose.

    What does everyone else think?

  10. Paulee & Mike Says:

Timing is everything. Who knows how this administration will function? Promises, Promises?????? I wish we could be a fly on lots of walls. You can not push ropes. If Mitt wants us to back him, that is hard to know, we never have any contact from anyone regarding anything in this regard.Seems to me, if you go forward someone has to be at the helm guiding the ship of intention, if you will. Grassroots is fine and dandy, but I personally have to know if the person I’m advocating has an interest directly. Just my own feelings. If I’m all wet, tell me. I can handle it. Will bend over backwards to help Mitt, anytime. He is still our MAN MITT!

  11. Ron Says:

  12. Tami Says:

I agree Paulee… how do we even know he wants to try for President again? Maybe after this run he’s decided it’s too much for he and his family. We gotta remember that his wife does have MS (though in remission right now) and by the time 2012 or 2016 comes, he will be close to 70. He’ll probably still be full of vim and vigor even then but I am not convinced he will even run again. I hope he does but who knows? A lot can happen/change in 4-8 years.

For now, I’m going to do my best to keep Obama out of the White House!

  13. Karen Says:

Me too Tami. I almost could have written your letter as that is how I feel about much of these things. It is a very sad story, but one we get to live with for better or worse!!!!

    K
