Just in case…
August 31st, 2008 Posted in Mitt Romney
Interesting article from the Boston Globe about what might be in store for Mitt if McCain doesn’t win.
One productive thing that any of us can do to support Mitt in whatever his future political activities are is donate to his PAC, Free and Strong America. This will help keep him “a player” in nationa politics and help lay the groundwork for 2012 just in case…

Thanks for the reminder, David. I donated to the Free and Strong America PAC the day of the VP pick as a way show my support for Gov. Romney. He is a leader like no other that comes along once in a lifetime and changes the world for the better.

Enjoyed the article, David. Thanks.
Mitt is an extraordinary guy. There are great days ahead of him.

He is still No. 1 in our book, hoping he prevails with goodness. He’s been a great role model, and has earned many praises and respect. Let’s keep him and Anne in our prayers.
Mccain says: He needs Mitt by his side in January.” What say you??????????

Mike and Paulee
Not good enough to be Veep, but good enough to ‘be by is side in January?”
Ok… where do I start on THIS idiot statement. I think it’s time for refiners fire. This is more about freedom inthis country than who is in power. When is Palin going to be dogged and questioned about HER faith? Hummm? Never, I’d say.
Unless Mac has his Harriet Meiers moment. He does not get my vote. I question EVERYTHING he has said and done to this point. I’m not trying to be bitter, but when the dog bites you, you avoide the dog.

Any predictions ?
Mine is if all of this is true she will be forced out of the ticket and maybe…….just maybe , Mitt is back in the ballgame .
September 1st, 2008 at 11:13 am
Could we not descend into Daily Kos-level discourse here? Especially about the candidates’ children. It wasn’t right when McCain made fun of Chelsea Clinton’s looks, and this isn’t right either. Particularly given that all of the swirling rumors has forced the family to go public with what is very personal, private information.

I understand we all wanted Mitt, but Mitt himself would not want this kind dirt flung at anybody, particularly the Palins. Let’s all lay off of this story please.
September 1st, 2008 at 11:14 am
Besides, even if it were true, 1) I would consider that a very noble course to take, particularly since it was a Downs baby thereby reinforcing her character and 2) if this actually did force a change in the ticket, it would be a mortal wound for McCain’s campaign and we’d be guarranteed Obama (and no way Mitt would want to be associated with that kind of train wreck).

September 1st, 2008 at 11:26 am
IF THEY LIE TO US NOW ?

I’m probably going to get banned for saying this , but don’t we deserve better ? Are we supposed to look the other way while the best and most honest candidate is being pushed aside because he is a Mormon ? \
Say that it is Palin’s down syndrome boy , the fact that they tried to cover this latest pregnancy is going to be BIG TROUBLE for the McCain campaign and the sooner we see this the better the party will be .

Mormons should do what they need to do to eliminate religious bigotry. Go for it. Let’s hear some official statements. Do it in a dignified way. The Jews created the Defamation League. Mormons could do the same. Get organized and get started on eliminating religious persecution. Don’t persecute Sarah Palin because she is standing where Mitt should have been. Don’t trash her family’s choices.
Yes, the radical evangelicals lifted their big black bibles and repeatedly beat Romney over the head with them. Ironic that Mitt loves and lives the biblical teachings they’ve battered him with. He may be bloodied but he is standing TALL and STRONG.
Mike Huckabee and his Army are organized and cohesive. Huck communicates with them via his blog at Huckpac. He is actively preparing for 2012.
Friday’s announcement by McCain and the next few weeks until the general election is over is like a giant pillow fight. Surprise blows, whacks on the head, smacks in the gut, and side-blows intended to topple. Until the all the WILD FEATHERS drift to the floor, I’m going to keep my wits, enjoy the show, brush the errant feather or two out of my eyes, and make the best decision possible, for me, when I step into the voting booth.

From Salt Lake Tribune: http://www.sltrib.com/news/ci_10342962?source=rss
[By floating Romney, a Mormon, as a potential vice presidential nominee, "the McCain campaign played chicken with evangelicals and they didn't blink. So McCain did," said Spencer Stokes, a GOP strategist in Utah. "As much as the LDS Church has invested in public relations and trying to improve how the church is viewed in the South, it may take another hundred years for these voters to get past the Mormon issue."]
It doesn’t need to take 100 years for southern voters to get past the Mormon issue and shame on the LDS if it does. If the LDS church would organize an Anti-Bigot Federation and take names, places, dates, times, publish anti-Mormon sermons, Sunday School programs, church manuals, church signs and bulletin boards, etc., and EXPOSE these pseudo-Christian preachers, their false and prejudicial doctrines, and the activities of their bigoted followers, CHANGE would happen in short order. This CRAP has been going on for over 180 years. Waaay past time for the Radical-Baptist-Evangelicals to be publicly and repeatedly SHAMED into reform.
Romney courageously poked his face onto the national scene, and they didn’t miss a chance to plant a facer on him every time. I admire Romney in a way that is impossible to express, but his campaign shouldn’t be the only catalyst to call for change in the evangelical realm. He needs his church to follow up their excellent charitable world-wide work with a formal, legal organization that can help future Mormons more easily serve this country.

You’re right, Evilio. The Jewish community rose up and look where it got Lieberman - nominated as VP with Al Gore. Without the legal backing of the Anti-Defamation League, that never would have happened.

Interesting take on overlooking Mitt for VP:
What’s Next For Romney?
[For starters, it's not at all clear that being chosen by John McCain would have been a good career move for Romney. Yes, if you win, you're the vice president. (Downside: you have to live in Washington, D.C., and attend far too many funerals.) But he'd be the vice-president of a president who is not known for delegating authority and with whom he has a problematic personal relationship. Ask Al Gore how much fun that can be.]

The Politics Of Survivorship

John McCain has cast himself as King Lear in a party full of ambitious sons, not daughters. Had he picked one of them, — Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty, Tom Ridge, John Thune, Mike Huckabee — he’d have gotten himself some protection, as he’d have a hyper-ambitious gent as his running mate actively working towards victory. But McCain didn’t do that — he picked a daughter far afield.
Who loves Sarah Palin? Conservative activists, because they identify with her. Is Palin sufficient protection? Or is there going to be a heck of a lot of GOP infighting, backtalking, lackluster surrogate action come October?
Does Palin have allies among the national bench of talking insiders? My guess is she does not. She certainly did not have any internal allies before the pick. Charlie Black wanted Mitt Romney, Lindsey Graham wanted Joe Lieberman, etc.
There is a chance that McCain has made some new enemies, or in Romney’s case, a re-enemy. I know that most GOP strategist and consultants and politicians are reading the talking points. I know that many of them publicly say they’re happy about the pick. I know that many of them are privately bewildered. I know that conservative activists by and large ARE happy about the pick.
But whereas Obama managed to select one of the non-Hillary options that didn’t produce inflammation, you might not be able to say the same about Palin.

One of the hilarious comments from “Huck and Mitt, Together Again” Washington Post.com. Read it all here:
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/08/31/huck-and-mitt-together-again/#comments
“I am tired of Obama/Biden/Democrats pointing out Gov. Palin’s lack of foreign affairs experience. This is what President Obama and Vice President Biden would do: The phone rings at the White House at 3 am. Russia reinvaded Georgia! After a bit of confusion, President Obama is located sleeping on the couch after an argument with Michelle over his less than inspirational speech to the Girls Scouts of America, where he did not mention their daughters and their role in the leadership of the Chicago branch of the Girls Scouts. After locating Georgia on the map, President Obama calls an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, all 45 officials must report to him immediately (NSC was reorganized by the Obama/Biden team to include all 300 foreign policy advisers that worked for him during campaign). At 4:30 am 35 officials have been brought to the White House. In the meantime, VP Biden was being flown back to the White House from his home in Delaware. In the meantime, President Obama has made frantic calls to leaders of France, Germany, and Italy. He reminded them that he made a speech in Berlin, Germany, where he laid out foundations of his foreign policy where the world is one and the responsibility for the world’s affairs lay with all nations in the world. Leaders of France, Germany, and Italy agreed to hold an emergency EU meeting of foreign ministers next day. At 5 am. President Obama and VP Biden and 35 NSC officials with their staffers convened an emergency meeting on national security. President Obama informed the group about his talks with Europeans and their total agreement to hold EU consultations next day. After a two hour discussion, the NSC decides to set an emergency phone bank to consult all leaders in the world in order to poll them on the Georgia crisis. The FedExField (home stadium of the Washington Redskins) was rented to house the phone bank, NSC emergency operations, staffers, etc. NSC also decided that the President Obama will make a speech to national audience (televised by every available outlet in the nation) and a live audience bussed to the stadium at 7 pm. By 4 pm. it was clear that only 123 world leaders were polled (the result was: 89 leaders referred the matter to the full session of the UN, 20 leaders had no opinion, with 14 leaders split among the following actions: protest note send to Russian President, send a truck convoy with humanitarian supplies to Georgia, give an interview on the national network in India to condemn the invasion). At 7 pm the show started at the FedExField. Barbara Streisand opened with rendition of the Beatles song “Strawberry Fields Forever,” followed by poetry reading by Maya Angelou. Exactly at 7:30 pm. President Obama and VP Biden were introduced by George Clooney and Jennifer Aniston. President Obama started his speech with thanking Hillary Clinton for the 3:45 am. phone call followed by President Clinton at 4 am. President Clinton accidently was in Kazakhstan and offered his mediating skills while on his way to Paris. President Obama informed the nation that all necessary steps were taken in order to stop this illegal invasion of Georgia and that all diplomatic channels were open. The USA undertook the following steps: called for an emergency meeting of the UN General Council, VP Biden will leave after this speech to travel to the region for emergency consultations with leaders there, the US Army was notified about the situation, the intelligence community was warned against unauthorized involvement in the conflict. Finally, President Obama read a message he sent to President Medvedev of Russia. The speech was followed by U2 concert. Free hats, tea shirts, and coffee mugs with Obama/Biden names were handed out.

Evilo,
I don’t think this is anyone elses but Sarah Palin’s baby boy. I don’t support her at all, but I’m not going to play the tabloid game. That said, she should have thought about that little one a few more seconds before jumping on the fame plane.
September 1st, 2008 at 5:07 pm
And it must be true then. the VP positions is worth nothing more than a warm bucket of SPIT.
I like the happy face mitt put that his religion did not hamper his election. Huckles the clown is estatic that he’ll have anouther go round in 12. I think we need to find anoother moromon to run against him, if Mitt is busy. How about one of Huckabee’s best mormon buddies he recently started touting? (and note, they did not come to his side to say YEA! we’re his FRIEND!).
I wanted Mitt, true. But I want the Bigots OUT of the party more. It’s time for them to get a clue they and their ilk may be welcome in te KKK, but NOT in the GOP.
September 2nd, 2008 at 9:46 am
David,
It isn’t just the Daily Kos, the information about Palin’s children is all over the media. That is politics these days and part of the game. Usually, candidates are vetted for such information. However, the Maverick apparently shoots from the hip, or apparently thought that many people could relate and it might sway the feminist crowd that supports Hillary.
McCain’s group did indeed change the talk on Friday to Palin but this is a new week and things will to shift in Obama’s direction. Palin’s motherhood and is she really ready to lead, if McCain health fails, as the leader of the most powerful nation on earth. If only life were like an episode of 24.
Mike Bloomberg would have been more of an inspired choice.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Oh wow…Can’t be a women with five children and run for public office…no we can’t have that. Sorry feminist side coming out. I disagree, call me young and naive if you want. I plainly disagree.
Do agree however that those Mormon Friends of Huckabee should come out and run against him in 2012 if we don’t get the white house.
I will campaign this year in hopes of us taking back the senate (really doubt the house but feel we can get the senate…just call me eternally optimistic…i might be wrong…I have been wrong so many times).
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Wouldn’t it be great if one year we have three Mormon candidates for President? Those bigots probably wouldn’t know who to attack first.
September 2nd, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Chris, for the love of all thats good and holy, I want the bigots out as well, but I feel we can make our feelings known another way then sabotoge McCain and Palin.
September 2nd, 2008 at 3:29 pm
I’m not ’sabotoging’ Palin! I guess if we can’t discuss her ablsloute inexperience … then heck. what can we yak about?
McCain did not even VET this woman. Hellowww? Anyone else see the problems here?
4 out then were in again. Unless McCain has a Harriet Miers moment, were for sure OUT.
September 2nd, 2008 at 4:05 pm
Chris, I’m a Romney supporter through and through. I think it’s good to “yak” as you say. For you to state that Palin has “absolute INnexperience” is not factual. I haven’t taken a flying leap on the Palin bandwagon - waiting to see where the wagon’s going, but she deserves a chance to heft the tuba.
I recommend the following link for consideration. (Don’t necessarily agree with every point, but it is WORTH READING in its ENTIRETY.):
http://newsweek.washingtonpost.com/onfaith/john_mark_reynolds/2008/09/palins_profound_experience.html
The Three Spheres of Activity
“Cultures are built through at least three spheres of activity. The first area of important work is government. The second is business. The third, nearly forgotten by some but no less vital than the others, is the social sphere that includes the family, volunteer work, and all the social services that are not produced by the state or by business.
It is good for a nation when the three spheres interlock and when wisdom from one type of experience enriches the work of another. There is, of course, expertise gained through concentrated activity in one area of activity. The different seasons of a person’s life means that he or she will often find himself moving from one type of activity to another. For a few years a man or woman may do mostly unpaid work in the social sphere and in another season paid work in the world of business.
Success in one sphere does not guarantee success in another, but there are rare individuals who can “do more than one thing.” Such people should be cherished, because they bring fresh insights to old systems along with their competence. We recognize this easily when an outstanding business leader like Mitt Romney moves from paid employment to the government sector. Business frequently hires aging political stars as Disney did with Senator George Mitchell, chairman of the board in the nineties.
We are not so good at seeing it when an outstanding social and civic leader like Sarah Palin moves into government. We discount everything she did that was not in the governmental or paid business arena.
That is foolish and wrong.”
September 2nd, 2008 at 5:26 pm
2thepoint,
good article, but I an NOT convinced. the more I learn about her, the less I like her. If he HAD to have a woman, what about Liddy dole? I am sure he could have found someone and actually VETTED her.
I have resolved that Mitt is in the back pew, and will remain there. I also feel that the polls are staring to reflect McCains bad judgement. Obama up.
