Romney to Adress Republican Convention on Sept.3

August 29th, 2008 Posted in John McCain, Mitt Romney, Sarah Palin

The first step on Mitt Romney’s journey to the White House in 2012 will be taken on Sept. 3, 2008
when he strides towards the speaker’s podium at the Republican National Convention. I wish the Republican ticket well this November and I think that, since Gov. Romney wasn’t picked by John McCain, the selection of Sarah Palin keeps the GOP as the Pro Life party and that she was one of the best picks that McCain could have made under the circumstances.

If McCain picks Gov. Romney for a high profile post, such as Treasury Secretary, Mitt will be well positioned for another run. If McCain is too insecure to risk a Romney appointment, then Romney should take on the role of party-builder, as he already has. McCain is the leader of the GOP right now, but his time will pass. We should not be despondent, but rather we should be energized by what we were able to accomplish in this campaign. We have all noted the phrases that were authored by Romney, that found their way into the McCain campaign. The pro business and tax cut positions that were adopted by McCain. Even the pick of Sarah Palin, a pro life candidate, is a bow to the power of the the much maligned religious right that, to hear the MSM tell it, had lost it’s influence in the Republican Party.

The pro abortion candidate trial balloons were floated up and promptly shot down. The liberal Democrat VP pick trial balloon was floated up and promptly shot down.

So, after the input of 100’s of thousands of activists all over the country, we were able to accomplish this:

1. The Republican Party remains the Pro Life Party

2. We Will Drill Here and Drill Now

3. We Will Send a New Breed of Politician to Washington to End the Corruption

4. We Will Secure the Borders and Enforce the Rule of Law

5. We Will Start the Process of Cutting Federal Spending and Move to Balance the Budget

6. We Will Win the War in Iraq and start to Withdraw our Troops

These are Mitt Romney’s positions and because he pressed John McCain so hard in the primaries, McCain was forced to adopt several of these positions and his pick of Sarah Palin, in my view, also reflects his grudging respect for Gov. Romney and for the social, fiscal and national defense conservatives who were the driving force behind his campaign.

Country First: Prosperity

“America’s best days are still to come.”
–Sen. John McCain

The American story is one of perseverance. Even in the face of tough times, the ingenuity and spirit of the American people has ushered in a new era of prosperity. Wednesday’s program will focus on John McCain’s plans to get our economy back on track and continue our long tradition of meeting the challenges we face and using our prosperity to help others. The day will conclude with an address by the vice presidential nominee.

Speakers will include:

* Mrs. Cindy McCain
* Republican Party’s Vice Presidential Nominee
* Gov. Bobby Jindal (La.)
* Former Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.)
* U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman (Minn.)
* U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (Texas)*
* U.S. Rep. Mike Pence (Ind.)*

“Our convention will showcase a cross-section of leaders who will highlight John McCain’s long commitment to putting our country first — before self-interest or politics,” said McCain 2008 Communications Director Jill Hazelbaker. “The speakers will address John McCain’s unmatched record of service and sacrifice for America, and his vision for moving our nation forward to keep us safe and get our economy back on track.

The roster of speakers announced today includes John McCain, Mrs. Cindy McCain, 10 current and former Republican governors, five current and former U.S. Senators and two wellrespected businesswomen. Their remarks will echo the themes that have been selected for each of the convention’s four days: service, reform, prosperity and peace.

“We are excited to announce this slate of speakers, each of whom shares John McCain’s love of country and commitment to serving a cause greater than one’s own self-interest. Their remarks will be a testament to Senator McCain’s unparalleled record of service and sacrifice for America and his readiness to lead as commander in chief and move America forward,” said Maria Cino, president and CEO of the 2008 Republican National Convention.

    I like the list John, just not so sure about number 4. We all know McCain’s issue with that, and Palin isn’t exactly a border-hawk herself. Still, hopefully we can work it in.

  2. Chris Says:

    And he dident even get a prime time slot like huckabee.

    Tells me what Mac thinks of Mormons! We are to sit down, shut up, vote the way were told and open up our wallets. Not any more.

    I’ll not be supporting the UP ticket, but only the down ticket.

    [Governor Huckabee you were super tonight on Hannity and Colmes. You just kept socking it to Colmes over and over. He couldn't get anything over on you!! You looked so relaxed and happy! We are all so glad Romney did not slink into the vp spot. Palin is someone we can live with but she is certainly NOT YOU. I am a firm believer that your time will come. We need you in Washington. Somehow it will work out in 2012!!]

    More…

    [The best thing Huckabee can do now is exactly what he has already planned and that is TV Commentator for Fox News.

    He can spread the conservative message and comment on or ask questions about the policies issues of the next president and let the country get to know him better.

    Mike will make a great president in 2012!]

    Okey dokey.

    I went over to the Huckabee link above to read. I felt like I was on another planet. Huck is definitely loved by his supporters. They really feared Romney. I loved it on Hannity when Huckabee said that he was never even approached in any degree as a possible VP to McCain. I can’t see the nation swallowing Huckabee in 2012, but that is the constant talk at the above Huckabee supporters link.

    It is interesting to see how differently people see Huckabee and Romney.

    John, Just thinking about the 2012 possibilities-Naturally, if McCain doesn’t win, Mitt should be in a perfect position to be the nominee. But, what if McCain wins? Would Mitt have a chance trying to run against an encombant? (either McCain or Palin)

    1. The Republican Party remains the Pro Life Party

    This may or may not be the best place to ask this question, but I will ask it, nonetheless; perhaps someone can answer, or direct me to an answer.

    There is, obviously, no one answer, but what is the consensus meaning of “pro-life”? These are some of the possible answers I can imagine:

    –making abortion illegal;

    –making abortion illegal at a certain point during pregnancy;

    –allowing each state to decide what it wants to do with abortion;

    –allowing abortion only where the mom’s heath is in danger.

    StevenInBrooklyn,

    During the primary debates Gov. Romney took the position that I personally hold. Roe v. Wade is bad law. The so called “right to privacy” is not to be found in the Constitution. The SCOTUS way over-stepped it’s legitimate role and wrote a bad law, a law that no one, outside the Court’s chambers, got the chance to cast a ballot for.

    The ideal situation would be that we could reach a national consensus that the least powerful and most vulnerable amongst us would enjoy the same Constitutional rights and protections that you and I enjoy.

    Obviously, we are a long way from that. Unless or until we can get there as a country, the next best answer is to strike down Roe and reaffirm the Federalist position that this needs to be decided by the individual states.

    I would like to see Roe overturned, but that seems unrealistic at this point. At least we are making some progress. The ban on partial birth abortion is obviously a step in the right direction. Public support for limitations on the procedure are rising and the calls for loosening the restrictions on adoption as an alternative to abortion are rising as well.

    That is why I was so encouraged to see that the Republican Party will remain the pro life party. We are converting hearts and minds and I believe that time is on our side.

  8. John Cronin Says:

    Ron,

    If McCain wins his age is the X factor. Just look at how younger men age during their tenure. I can’t imagine that McCain will be serving out the lame duck segment of his Presidency at age 80.

    If McCain declines to run for a second term, Sarah Palin will be in the cat bird seat, unless they so something really stupid, like sponsoring another amnesty bill. If McCain breaks faith with us on something major like this, the “Peasants With Pitchforks” will throw the bums out in a heartbeat. Palin would be tarred with the same brush and her career at the national level would be over.

    This is why I am not too disappointed that MR was not the pick. Of course, only time will tell, but it may not be a bad thing that Mitt is not on the ticket.

  9. frozone Says:

    Too bad Mitt doesn’t have a prime time speaking assignment at the RNC. I’ll be skipping it now…

    My take is romney can’t worry about 2012 till the 08 results are in. If mccain wins, than romney should just forget about 2012 and realize his only shot at the white house would be in 2016…no way romney could run and knock off the veep palin in a gop primary, ie if that is the case than things are real lousy for the mccain adm and than think he could win the general in 2012 after winning the primary…why waste his politcal capital on the 2012 race against hillary, if somehow he won the gop primary (you think he could knock off 2 women in the same year?) a year when dems really will be favored to win after 3 repub wins…just pointless for him to even run in 2012 with a mccain win in 2008. Thus, if mccain wins, i think romney has 3 options

    1) take a cabinet job… if mccain offers sec of treasury, thats perfect for romney.
    2) take an amb job…say to canada or better the UN but any country works, france, england, etc…thus romney keeps his outsider DC creds, no need to join the cabinet unless its a high profile spot, but taking an amb job still adds to his politcal resume for another white house run in 2016, which is vital…you got to think dems are gonna win in 2012, thus romney runs as an outsider in 2016.
    3) Run for senate from utah in 2010 or 2012 if these seats open up and the gov of utah passes, he can’t run for both…guess he could take a cabinet job or ambass-ship and still run for a senate seat from utah if they open up…Now if mccain losses in 08, the utah senate seat option is still there but the path for another white house run is pretty clear. I would probably rec being a visting prof around the country for a few years than run in 2012 against obama.

  11. SED Says:

    I think running for a senate seat in Utah would only enhance the Morman issue that hurt him in the primaries. He should stay here in MA and take Kennedy’s seat. Taking out the successor to the liberal lion will make headlines. If not become chairman to the RNC and help conservatives get elected.

    I really hope that McCain changes the schedule and allows Mitt to have a primetime spot. I am absolutley anxious to see him make a fiery speech like Hillary Clinton did to upstage Joe Biden. Mitt was the overwhelming favorite for VP. Many of the people who did not support him in the primaries had buyers remorse after watchingn him these last few months. I know he would get a huge standing ovation.

  12. frozone Says:

    Let’s pressure McCain to give him an evening slot. Now that Palin can assuage Evangelicals, let him have Huckabee’s spot.

  13. Karen Says:

    I am not sure the convention is under McCain’s control that much… not sure though, I would love to hear from someone who knows… anyone??

  14. blue Says:

    Yeah…romney got a raw deal on the convention speaking slot, makes you wonder why…as for the utah senate seat, i think its a perfect spot for him…not like romney is gonna escape the mormon issue but he needs a platform, which a senate seat would give him. I see no chance he will ever get elected in MA again + i see no reason for him to even risk a loss in the state, not worth it if he plans to run for the white house again. Yet, he would be a lock to win in utah where he could serve from 2010-2016 in the senate to really establish his con creds, than run for the white house in 2016. Otherwise if he doesn’t have a platform, it would be next to impossible for him to sit out two cycles and think he could win the white house. Another thing, i think mccain should KO the convention with this hurricane coming and head to new orleans area to help folks, looks like its gonna be awful hit to the area.

  15. Mit 10 Says:

    Why wouldn’t they give the man that was #2 on the ticket a prime time speaking slot?

    Wow - I am stunned by the “buzz”.
    You all know how devoted we have been to Romney.
    I had a email from Anne’s brother this morning - in it he said that he had just spoken with her - that they were feeling some relief and were very upbeat and dedicated to getting this ticket elected.
    Now, if they can bounce back and put the campaign above their hopes, then we must stop and think and consider doing the same. For the sake of the country - they do not want an Obama elected. What a most unselfish motivation at this time. That must be the most unselfish objective for all of us. We have been his supporters because we respect him as a person and as a leader. If we are truly his supporters then we will continue to follow him and trust his judgement.
    I have asked Rod if he can give us a resource for letting Mitt and Anne know how we feel, just as we did following the primaries. I told him it was important that we do that. I will let you know if I receive a reply to that request.
    In the meantime, this decision needs further analysis before we make hasty decisions for which we will all be sorry. That is difficult for me to say as I have been one of the most outspoken ones when it came to voting for McCain if Mitt was not the VP.
    The objective is to WIN. Nothing can be accomplished if we do not have the White House. The struggle to win is predicated on making a statement that trumps the “Hollywood”
    mentality of the Democratic Party. We essentially MUST get down and dirty to overcome their impact because they have so many poorly informed voters and they appeal to this level of intelligence through class envy. Mitt and McCain are both affluent contenders and fit right into that visual of the Republicans as rich and unaffected by the misfortunes of the poor. My goodness, look at what they focus on to sway public opinion from the fact that Obama has NO experience and that he will literally destroy this country;s economy - McCain cannot remember how many houses he has and Mitt Romney has just as many. Why on NBC during the Palin announcement, they had a trailer that said “How many houses does this add to the McCain campaign?” - constantly appealing to the ignorant and uninformed by playing the class envy card - a major news network in the tank for the Democrats. We MUST have a totally unexpected angle to confuse the masses and many of those masses were Hilary supporters and women who want a woman on the ticket. It makes perfect “political” sense just not perfect “common” sense to those of us who are more informed and realize what we need as a country. There will never be any reasoning with those who do not listen to reason but simply react to emotion,We must realize that through our social welfare system the wrong people have been having babies - a true and simple fact. Those people are now voters for the Democrats because they continue to get free support through life from them as they continue to increase the entitlement programs. The Sarah Palin choice was an attempt to appeal to those who react primarily with emotion. Although right now we may feel they take us for granted, they are counting on those of us who make decisions by being informed to realize what they must do to win and continue to support the effort.
    Evilio - you have been a steadfast supporter of Mitt Romney. You and I have been on the same page on virtually everything. We worked very closely with Mitt’s brother in law here in Florida during the campaign. He is so devoted to this MITT - with a respect and admiration that is quite moving at times. His response to me now and after the primaries was to “trust Mitt’s judgement”. Mitt Romney is NOT A WHINER. He is a man of great dedication and personal fortitude as is his wife and their family. He has taken this in stride and refocused his efforts on electing McCain and other Republicans in November because his dedication is to the country and not to his personal needs or wants. I am sure there is disappointment, but you will not see or hear that from him at this time as he does not want anything to jeopardize a win in November. The ultimate unselfish act for this country.
    We must AT LEAST put our vote where our mouth is and continue to support the candidate whom we know is the best for America - MITT ROMNEY. Right now - HE is asking us to support the Republican ticket. WE repeatedly accuse others of hippocricy in their beliefs and actions - let us not be recipients of that same criticism by abandoning our candidate in his greatest hour of need. Our support is desperately needed. What we can do in addition to giving that support is push for a VISIBLY PUBLIC position for Mitt in this administration. I have sent messages to the RNC and McCain Campaign to announce such a position ASAP if they want our continued support. If you can all do that - it will be a big help. It will keep Mitt in the public eye for the next four years and show America just how excellent he would be as President in 2012. Just as Mitt has done, we now must get over this and refocus our emotions and efforts to working alongside him to get this ticket elected. Let us not abandon him now - it is always darkest before the dawn.
