Let’s see . . . what do we know so far?
Mitt is at home today.
He’s scheduled to be with McCain both in Pennsylvania Saturday and in Missouri Sunday.
His stock on Intrade is rising
If it’s not Mitt, McCain will have pulled off the biggest head fake in recent times.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:08 am
Fox is also reporting that Mc has not made his final decision as of yet. I don’t believe that by the way. I think he knows full well who he wants. I think it just more games and more frustration, but perhaps there is a good reason not to say yet.

McCain Veep Watch: Focusing on Pawlenty [Byron York]
Since McCain has already made his veep choice, it doesn’t make any sense to say he is leaning more and more in this or that direction. But from the calls I’ve made and the conversations I’ve had, I would say the person to watch is Pawlenty. No Romney, no Lieberman — although the people I talk to still think (worry?) that there is a chance McCain has a surprise up his sleeve.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:29 am
Mitt is absolutely out of the spotlight today as far as I know. I have seen nothing of him on any show… I have heard nothing…. hummmmm
Of course, it is all speculation since JMc has not made up his mind yet (ocean front property in AZ anyone???)
August 28th, 2008 at 9:31 am
stephen: I hope he understands that every poll seems to indicate that the only way to get a win is with MITT… If not, it is a waste of energy but Mitt will still somehow come out on top of the whole thing.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:37 am
You know, here is something interesting.
Yesterday, I was listening to Sean Hannity and he said a “very reliable source” whatever that is, told him that Lieberman has spent considerable time talking JMc out of asking him saying it would be the kiss of death. He said MC’s own camp were going against MC and trying to talk him into it even though JL supposedly said he would not do it.
I woke up thinking about that this morning and it made me hope something like that is not true. It could indicate some infighting since we are told that many of his insiders have been fighting with him about MR as well… They don’t want himand he does kind of thing. These are all things I have heard on talk shows anyway… it is all so dramatic and icky
August 28th, 2008 at 9:39 am
I wonder if the Pawlenty thing is a head fake

Karen:
McCain is known for having bizarre and unconventional views.
About six months ago Jonah Goldberg and Peter Brierbart (sp)had a discussion where they said McCain is the type of person that would pick Joe L and think that it is a very good idea. He is a bit of a wild card.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Stephen: My husband and I were just having this very conversation! If he does do “his own thing”, he will be cutting off his nose to spite his face. That is ok for him, but what about the rest of us… I don’t particularly want to have my nose cut off to spite HIS face. He needs to just buckle down and do the right thing. I hope he will listen to the thousands and perhaps millions that have participated in online polling and get a feel for what the people actually may want…. if not, I fear he will lose and we will all suffer… que cera cera
August 28th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Well, if McCain thinks the pulse of the country indicates Lieberman should be the pick, he’s more clueless than I thought, and may even be trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.
Can McCain really be so blind and deaf not to see that Romney is the nominee that most of the party wants?
I really hope he’s not this stupid.
Again, could be another head fake to throw the media off the trail.
August 28th, 2008 at 9:55 am
Can I take a moment and remind everyone that Romney, while actively campaigning, was 1st or 2nd in most contests, and at least 3rd in ALL contests except SC. If Obama wanted to win, he should have picked Hillary. If McCain wants to unite the party and win, he should pick Romney.
This, folks, is a test of who has better judgment.
What is comes down to is this: should we expect our presidential candidates to put aside personal preference for the sake of the country? And if not for that, at least for the party? Obama failed that test miserably. So the only question remains is will McCain put country and/or party before self and display the wisdom of Solomon by selecting Romney? Or will he go with someone he is “comfortable with” regardless of how that helps the country.
I’ve always had the uneasy impression that McCain is a narcissist (though not nearly so bad as Obama), but this is his chance to prove me wrong and lay that fear to rest.
Is McCain running for the good of the country, or for the good of McCain? We’ll know in less than 24 hours.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:08 am
Marybeth, your “trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory” makes me smile. Great!
Frozone, well said. The V.P. selection IS a test of who has better judgment. Now, after all these long months, it’s come down to these final 24 hours.
Pawlenty to appease the radical evangelicals or Romney to win the west and whip the American economy into prosperity? McCain said that he wouldn’t make a decision until he talked to Cindy. She arrived home from Georgia yesterday. So, anyone have knowledge of her inclinations for VP?
August 28th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Folks, the Natl Weather Service is now reporting that Gustav will hit the Gulf Coast anywhere from Texas to the Florida panhandle on Tuesday morning.
Let’s pray for those who lost their lives and their families in Haiti and that this storm will continue to lessen.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Frozone: not picking Romney would be depressing in two ways: (1) it would call into question McCain’s judgment; and (2) we wouldn’t have Romney to help win the campaign, and then shake up Washington. I say, pick Romney, and impose low budget pizza parties on every department in DC!
August 28th, 2008 at 10:17 am
I know that Cindy and Ann are reportedly good friends now, but that is all I have ever heard about her feelings at all…
I hate this… continue to pray as we all have been doing… K
August 28th, 2008 at 10:19 am
SinB… I completely agree…
it would be so stupid if he didn’t pick correctly. It will be depressing and I will have that sinking feeling of doom all over again! K

Democrats fear Romney (video from earlier this year):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6si_SSWKwI
Listen to what Howard says…Remember, Biden is a Washington insider, Mitt Romney is not.
August 28th, 2008 at 10:25 am
If McCain picks Mitt, it will show once and for all he can put his pettiness aside and work together with conservatives in the GOP for the good of the party.
It would also put him in stark contrast with Obama.
Obama’s ego wouldn’t let him put Hillary - the clear 2nd place favorite - on the ticket and look what it’s done to the Dem convention.
I’ve never seen the Dems look more disspirited and disunited in their conventions.

China is keeping a watchful eye on McCain’s VP choice:
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-08/28/content_9731370.htm
As well they should; Mitt was the first candidate way back when to discuss the rising power of China.
StevenInBrooklyn, Ha! I love the story of Mitt abolishing the expensive food-service feasts the Utah Olympic Committee folks were enjoying on a daily basis when he became Chairman of the Olympic fiasco. On his first day on the job, he bought pizza for all and told them they would be brown-bagging it in the future.
America needs Mitt Romney to do surgery on our bloated, wasteful, in-the-red federal budget.

I just caught this on http://www.race42008.com... interesting and encouraging… K
“The major thing standing in the way of a Lieberman Vice-Presidential pick for McCain is a seemingly small thing - an RNC rule that states that a Vice Presidential nominee must have been a Republican for at least 60 days prior to nomination.
There are only two ways around that rule as far as I know - the first being that Lieberman has already switched his party affiliation a couple months ago secretly without letting anybody know (highly, highly, highly unlikely). The other option would be for the delegates to vote to waive that rule at the RNC — and it’s not hard to imagine how that would go.
Color me skeptical, but I just don’t think John McCain would put the party through that kind of turmoil just to get a liberal Democratic candidate who already failed twice in running for the White House on a Republican ticket.”

Great article, by the way (thanks 2thepoint). Surf on over…

I can’t believe McCain and/or his staff didn’t know that to begin with. Especially since McCain was considering the possibility of being John Kerry’s running mate in 2004. But maybe the rules are different in the Dem party.
That being said. this could provide cover McCain may feel he needs on his appeal to liberals and moderates. . . “well everyone, I tried my best to get Joe on the ticket, but I just couldn’t do it. Rules, you know.”
And that way, he can pick a conservative.

ANYBODY KNOW WHERE MITT IS NOW ?
August 28th, 2008 at 11:07 am
2thepoint, the reason the Pizza story impresses me is that it’s evidence that Mitt Romney is a humble man, which is exceedingly rare in politics (though not amongst people generally). Kind of goes along with that YouTube video I saw a few weeks back showing Mr. Romney helping some people take out a tree stump after wildfires in California. That just impresses me to no end;the ability to become famous and rich, and remain humble. It’s what Washington needs.

Yes, SteveinBrooklyn, Mitt’s humility is a character trait that is sorely missing in politics (dare I mention John Edwards?).
Just saw Jill Hazzelbacker (McCain’s Communications Director)on FOX reporting that there is no VP candidate yet but it will be over soon.
So there you go. Don’t believe her. They’ve got to know.

I live in Michigan, a state that has a heavy weight around it’s neck like no other. Extremely high unemployment, mass housing foreclosures and a ranking on most of the “worst of” lists. We have an African American, Democratic crook as Mayor of Detroit with 10 felony charges agains him, Kwame Kilpatrick, who’s facing ouster this very weekend by Gov. Jennifer Granholm. John McCain needs Michigan - what better time for Mitt Romney to step in.

One thing not to do is blame McCain for being a sadist about all this. All the speculation, and all the buzz is aimed at (1) detractingas much as possible from the DNC, (2) gauging opinion about a VP possibilities; and (3) getting exposure for McCain/?
The military experience has paid off.
August 28th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Just heard on FOX news that Tim (who?) Pawlenty has cancelled some of his engagements for tomorrow
Carl Cameron then did say though that the same could be said about Mitt Romney who has kept his schedule quite clear today.
Who knows?!?!? LOL This is driving me nuts!
August 28th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
David D - thanks for the interesting “heads-up.” Could mean something…
SteveinBrooklyn - funny comments on HotAir!
McCain has a shrewd mind. One only has to remember that he was counted out at the beginning of the primaries - flying commercial, carrying his own bags, riding around in a rented van, etc. Now, here he is and here we are.
His VP strategy is keeping the media buzzing during this long week of Dem’s convention. Great strategy to keep everyone guessing through Obama’s speech tonight.

I don’t think it will be Mitt. I think it will be Pawlenty. McCain will be wrong to choose him. By trying to please the evangelicals, he will alienate the other 2/3 of the party. I mean really, Pawlenty? Give me a break!

Be prepared for an unconventional choice, interesting???? Mccain is going to kill us. Why would Paw, who, cancel all his appt. for tomorrow. I’m getting scared. Gee, how can Mitt not be the one , his polls are great. He is the people’s choice. Saw Huck this am, said, he is not the one. He had a huge coldsore, stressed out, probably. He’s not the only one, right?
August 28th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
Pawlenty would cancel his appointments as disinformation; if he was the pick, and McCain wanted to keep things secret until tomorrow, why would he cancel his appointments? Now, if Romney was canceling his appointments, that would be bad for his chances
August 28th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
McCain picking Pawlenty would do NOTHING for him as far as trying to get the western states and Michigan which he needs deperately. Plus he truly needs someone to go up against Biden in a debate. Pawlenty is very weak in that area. Romney is definitely up to the task. He’s been campaigning for John just about everywhere including his sons who have been traveling all over the country for him. Would McCain diss Romney after all he’s done?? If he does, I will be truly disappointed in him. That means he has no backbone and is caving in to all the ad threats by the Dems. I can only hope and pray it’s Romney.
August 28th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
I think Frozone nailed it. This is why it will be very hard for me to lift a finger for McCain if he chooses to walk away from the man the country is saying they want for his VP. I will not support him and I will do so with a good conscience.
