Romney Family Gets Security Sweep

August 28th, 2008 Posted in Mitt Romney

I wonder if we will see all the MSM camera crews outside the Romney homes, looking for signs of a Secret Service presence, you know, the same way that kept a vigil outside outside of Biden’s. If we don’t, I won’t be shocked.

Roll Call cites sources with strong Michigan ties saying the Secret Service has conducted a security sweep of the home of Romney’s sister.

Though one operative cautions it could have been done in advance of Romney appearing as a surrogate — not the vice presidential nominee — at an upcoming McCain campaign stop in Michigan.

Lets see what we know, Mitt and Huck will be appearing together with McCain on Aug 31 in MO, and Mitt and Tom Ridge will be appearing with McCain on Saturday in PA. Both of these rallies will feature the VP and both of them have the common denominator of Mitt. I mean, why would McCain have Mitt scheduled to appear with him all over if he isn’t the VP? I can see Mitt as the VP appearing with others to bring solidarity within the party, but to just have Mitt endorse the new VP over and over again seems a little repetitive.

  2. Leslie Says:

I saw Good Morning America, and I am now convinced it’s Pawlenty. He looked like he knew something. If he wasnt’the choice, he would have said something like, “I don’t think I’m in the running”, but he didn’t. I don’t thing McCain is going to choose Mitt. But I think he is going to use plenty of Mitt to get elected, because he sure as hell knows he can’t get the nomination with Pawlenty’s credentials. McCain is basically trying to have it both ways: use Mitt’s influence to get elected, and then not anger the evangelicals by putting Pawlenty on the ticket. By the way, I don’t think it will work. I think a McCain/Pawlenty ticket will be a failure, but that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong. My feeling is that selling out to the evangelicals is going to alienate the other 2/3 of the party.

  3. Noelle Says:

Ordinarily, speculating is my favorite past-time, but the “will it be Mitt? won’t it be Mitt” is damaging my emotional equilibrium.

After all that I have read, I firmly believe that Mitt Romney is the best choice. If it IS Mitt, I will enthusiastically support the ticket. If it is another conservative, I will support the ticket. If it is a moderate or a liberal, I will write in Romney’s name in November.

  4. Tami Says:

I have this sinking feeling that it is Pawlenty too. WHile I don’t have a lot against him, he’s just not Mitt. Mitt is the guy! I don’t know if I can stand this much longer.

Noelle, I ditto your sentiments as to wh you vote for or write in.

  5. Eric Says:

If McCain thinks he can have it both ways, he has got another thing coming. I will have to start my Anti-McCaining again if he thinks he can nominate someone else and then use Mitt’s hard work to elected.

  6. SED Says:

Pawlenty the ultimate safe pick with no risk involved. Alot of people are going to be disappointed and there will be no energy to drive McCain’s campaign.

  7. Tami Says:

Anyone else’s nerves frazzled like mine are? LOL

  8. 2thepoint Says:

I’m starting to think it’s Pawlenty, too. He just looked like he knew something on GMA. His background is appealing to the blue collars and the Taliban Evangelicals like him (Baptist).

“Pawlenty’s humble upbringing could offset McCain’s more privileged background. Born in St. Paul, he was one of five children and the first in his family to go to college. His father was a milk truck driver, and his mother, a housewife, died when he was 16. Now a Baptist, he was raised Roman Catholic but converted after his marriage.”

Pawlenty isn’t the right choice for America.

  9. 2thepoint Says:

Tami, I’ve been a anxious the last two days.

Now that I’ve accepted the fact that Pawlenty is probably the choice I feel like the kid that’s just slid down the 50 foot slippery slide and and is gathering his wits at the bottom of the slide. Ready to climb off and walk over to the swings…

  10. MM Says:

I dont know. Pawlently has absolutely no charisma at all. I watched him this morning and he tries to play the I am so cute and funny thing. Romney will be the VP. I have no doubts whatsoever.

  11. 2thepoint Says:

Carl Cameron on FOX is reporting from Dayton, Ohio, that McCain DID in fact make his VP choice before taking off from Phoenix today.

    I knew it.

  12. EVELIO PEREZ Says:

NO MITT / NO MONEY / NO MCCAIN
    ROMNEY 2012

  13. Eric Says:

If it really is Pawlenty then I won’t vote for McCain. I will also take occasion to encourage others not to as well.

  14. John Cronin Says:

Forget Pawlenty. Two hours before the rumored leak and the day before the official announcement, Intrade still has Romney at 67.5, up 22.5 and Pawlenty at 21.0, down 3.22.

Romney is a fillet mignon steak dinner and Pawlenty is a bowl of tapioca pudding.

  15. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

John, I hope you’re right, but why do you put so much faith in InTrade? If only a dozen or less people know what McCain decided, why would traders be any better guessers that you/us?

  16. amy Says:

    John
That is also my way of thinking. I think all the rumors are just a smoke screen. McCain/Romney ‘08

  17. Eric Says:

Well, my original post had some good logic behind it.

  18. amy Says:

It still does, Eric, It still does

  19. Eric Says:

I mean it is practically screaming Mitt. There would be no other reason to have a rally with Huck involved if not to have Huck endorse the ticket to passify is rabbid followers.

  20. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

    YES IT IS:

    No Pawlenty?
from The Corner by Kathryn Jean Lopez
Pawlenty to Be at State Fair When McCain Announces Pick By Shira Toeplitz Roll Call Staff August 28, 2008, 2:49 p.m. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, on the short list of possible GOP vice presidential picks, said he plans to be home at the state fair for a radio show appearance Friday, when Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is expected to announce his running mate. Pawlenty was the main attraction at a press conference to highlight Republicans’ argument that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is ‘not ready’ to be president. Pawlenty referred all questions about the ticket to the McCain campaign.

  21. JA Says:

    This is from townhall:

“Romney, who had played the GOP attack-dog role earlier in the week at the Democratic convention and has been meeting with donors in California, left his beachfront San Diego home Thursday morning with an overnight bag. His son, Matt, said Romney was headed to an unspecified location in the state. Asked about being vice president, the elder Romney said: “I don’t have anything for you right now.”"

  22. Darlene Says:

John - I agree with you. My first thought is why would Pawlenty cancel his appointments when they have been so secretive up until now and then to just come out with this? Also, if you take a look at the schedule, Mitt is to appear with Huck and McCain on the 31st in Missouri. Mitt is also going to appear with Ridge and McCain in PA on Saturday, as Eric has stated up above. Now, Ridge is from PA - so, who better to to appear with McCain and the Veep? And, Huck came in second to McCain in the primary for MO - so, who better to appear with McCain and his Veep? Having Mitt appear in PA and MO right after announcing who the veep is going to be doesn’t make sense unless it is him. Why would McCain’s camp send Mitt to campaign in those two states (with McCain) when he dropped out before those primaries? Up until now, I believe Mitt has only been campaigning mostly out west where he is very well liked. Then you also have the appearance of McCain in MI and CO right after the convention. I find it strange that McCain is appearing in the two states that wanted Mitt - two states that Mitt can swing McCain’s way. I also find it very hard to believe that Pawlenty could hold his own against Biden. Anyway, just my thoughts. Let me know if I am missing something…

  23. Sarah Says:

I am going absolutely insane. All these rumors are getting too me. I am not going to be able to sleep tonight. I am not. I am going to be on the computer at two in the morning. I know it. I just know it. I am going nuts.

Pawlenty or Romney? Pawlenty or Romney? Its Mitt, its not mitt. Are going over and over in my mind. UG. I agree with whomever said their equilibrium is being thrown off. My equilibrium is being thrown way off.

  24. Eric Says:

Intrade knows about Pawlenty’s schedule too, and he is down 0.2 while mit is up over 20 today. I think the signs are very telling in our favor.

  25. 2thepoint Says:

    Eric, I hope you’re knock-on-wood, cross-your-fingers, throw-salt-over-your-shoulder RIGHT!

  26. Renna Says:

No Mitt, No Money, No McCain.

My family will not vote for McCain without Mitt. We will vote for Barr to send a message to the Republican Party. Tom Pawlenty is an unknown entity and if McCain chooses him - that is the slap in the face that turns us the other way. We do not want Obama but it may be what we need to turn this country back to its roots.

  27. Renna Says:

In Trade just dropped 20 points for Mitt and up 20 for Pawlenty - not good news. I had inside information he chose Pawlenty - reliable source

  28. Renna Says:

Our family and friends will vote for Barr to try to send a message t the Republcans and John McCain. We did not like McCain from the get go and would only vote for him if Mitt on the ticket - this cinches our decision

  29. Chris Says:

Why would the S. S. Sweep Romey’s sister’s home? Did they do this before she was his sister of a presidential candidate? Nope. Why now? And never before has she had to have her home ’swept’ when he appeared at other times.

  30. Eric Says:

Who is this “reliable source” you speak of Renna?

  31. Trooperdad Says:

It wasn’t the SS, they were LDS missionaries! Easy to confuse the MSM.

  32. Renna Says:

I cannot reveal the source but from a major New York News media

  33. Renna Says:

My disappointment is overwhelming - just when I did not think my level of respect fro John McCain could get any lower, he passed over Mitt - the one everyone felt was his best option to win. HUGE, HUGE mistake

  34. Chris Says:

    Could be a fakeout.

Remember no one really saw biden comming.

  35. Mit 10 Says:

I hope McCain looses. We all loose any way. I am sure all good conservatives will support Pawlenty but I do not think John McCain is deserving of my support.

I am starting to feel sick….

  36. 2thepoint Says:

When Pawlenty enters the debate arena with gladiator Biden, better have the stretcher handy. Pawlenty is gonna be a bloody pulp.

  37. Leslie Says:

Biden was the logical choice for Obama, just as Pawlenty is the logical choice for McCain. McCain could never have someone on the ticket that could outshine him. Pawlenty is just a blob, that’s why he was picked. In four years, nobody will even remember who ran with McCain. Mark my words.

  38. Marybeth Says:

Yeah, someone said the other day that Biden would be the answer to a Trivial Pursuit question one day.

I feel like that about Pawlenty.

  39. 2thepoint Says:

Leslie - your comment made me laugh and it feels good! Pawlenty is just a blob… HAHAHAHAH!

    Thank you!
