I Heart Mitt

August 27th, 2008 Posted in John McCain, Mitt, Mitt Romney, Multimedia, Rally, Republicans, Romney, Video

I just love this man, listen to him speak. He’s just fantastic. I’m so glad that I’ve been a part of this whole campaign experience since before he announced he’d run for President. I’ve had the absolute time of my life. Oh, and by the way I’m heading to Missouri for Sunday’s Rally in O’Fallon Missouri :)

Thank you so much Ann Marie for showing us that interview. Wasn’t that terrific? It just excites me so much to see him take hardball questions and smack ‘em right outta the park LOL

Congrats on being able to attend the rally. I’m so jealous LOL but hey, enjoy yourself and take pictures to share with us!

  2. Wolfagain Says:

I fondly remember the first time I saw Mitt. I had fallen a sleep in my easy chair and woke as he was doing his thing at a New Hampshire Republican Womens gathering on C-Span about 2 years ago. After a very good speech he moved into the crowd and personally met almost every guest there with such ease and class. I was mesmerized! WE got a winner! I thought, and I still think he’s a winner!

Some good news going around my state of Florida. Thought you would enjoy this, and perhaps like to spread it around to all the media.

Florida poll: Mitt Romney, not Crist, helps McCain

About 32 percent of respondents said they’d favor John McCain if he picked Mitt Romney as his running mate.
TALLAHASSEE — Joe Biden’s barely a blip. Mitt Romney’s more of a hit. Gov. Charlie Crist should stay where he is. And Joe Lieberman should go away.

That’s all according to Mason-Dixon Polling & Research’s latest Florida voter survey gauging the vice presidential picks and possibilities in the presidential race.

The poll shows the race is almost dead-even: 45 percent favor Barack Obama and 44 percent favor Republican John McCain.

Obama’s decision to pick Delaware Sen. Biden on Saturday as a running mate doesn’t seem to have done much for the ticket. The poll shows that those who said Biden would make them either more or less inclined to vote Democrat almost canceled each other out, while 64 percent of likely voters said the pick made no difference.

    Not so for Romney.

About 32 percent of respondents said they’d favor McCain if he picked Romney. That’s double the number of those who said they’d be less inclined to back the ticket. Only 17 percent said they wanted Crist on the ticket.

”People like Charlie Crist where he is, in the governor’s mansion. They know Romney, who campaigned hard in this state,” said Mason-Dixon pollster Brad Coker. “Romney looks like he gives McCain more of an edge than Biden gives Obama.”

But Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman looks toxic to the ticket. Nearly twice as many people said they’d be less likely to vote for McCain if the former Democrat were on the ticket. Many Democrats see the former vice presidential candidate of 2000 as a turncoat. Conservative Republicans can’t stand his abortion-rights record.

”Lieberman’s luster has faded,” Coker said.

McCain will probably make his pick Friday. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin barely registered responses in the poll, which didn’t include the name of former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge.

The poll shows that South Florida favors Obama the most, where he leads 53-37 — almost the reverse of the numbers favoring McCain in North Florida. McCain also has a slight lead in the crucial Central Florida I-4 corridor, which is often the decider of the statewide elections.

The virtual tie in the race, though, is doubly good news for Obama. It should make McCain nervous because he needs to win Florida more than the Democrat due to the vagaries of the election map. And recent polls have shown Obama was slipping after making up major ground in Florida by blitzing the state with more than $7 million in ads over two months.

Also in Obama’s favor: New voters, who have flocked to the party in eye-popping numbers. Most of them aren’t showing up in the polls because they’re so new to the rolls. Obama leads among independents, who favor him 48-42, according to the poll of 625 voters, which has an error-margin of four percentage points.

The poll shows McCain has strong Republican support, at 78 percent, but that’s not strong enough when compared to Jeb and George Bush, who consistently polled in the high 80s in Florida.

In the Jan. 29 primary he barely lost to McCain, Romney won more conservative parts of the state. But McCain prevailed largely due to the last-minute endorsement of Crist and Hispanic support in Miami-Dade swung by Sen. Mel Martinez, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and the Diaz-Balart brothers, Lincoln and Mario.

Romney’s baggage: Some Christian conservatives are nervous about his Mormonreligion. He also switched his position on abortion to ”pro-life” before he ran for governor.

Romney frequently blasted McCain for knowing little about economics and acknowledging as much during the primary. Romney tried to dismiss his own attacks as election ”hyperbole” when he appeared Wednesday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe political forum. McCain’s campaign this week released a Web advertisement recycling Hillary Clinton’s primary attacks on Obama, whose campaign is ready to respond in turn with a Romney pick. Romney’s big-business record was also the subject of scorn from fellow GOP candidate Mike Huckabee, who suggested blue-collar workers wouldn’t want to vote for “the guy who laid you off.”

Many Republicans, though, say a Romney pick is worth that risk.

”Romney should bring McCain some of those conservatives. And he could help with the economy,” said Republican state Rep. Julio Robaina of Miami. “But this is a close race.”

  4. Tami Says:

Mitt Romney is going to be on the Sean Hannity Radio show in a few moments.

  5. Karen Says:

I am putting off going out to see some women in my neighborhood just so I can hear Mitt… I pray he says something good and doesn’t scare us! ooooo snap, I am such a baby!

  6. Dan Gus Says:

I notice that Romney is giving a different response recently when asked about his VP prospects. He no longer says, “I anticipate supporting the ticket, not being part of the ticket.” Now he just says he’s got nothing to say about the issue altogether. That sort of deflection seems to represent a shift that implicitly acknowledges a probability of making the ticket. Perhaps I am reading through the rose-colored glasses of hopeful interpretation, but that’s how the tea leaves seem to be reading the past couple days.

  7. Carolina Says:

    Mitt is a WARRIOR!!!

Come on McCain — PICK MITT.

  8. Carolina Says:

    Dan Gus Says:

    August 27th, 2008 at 2:35 pm

    I noticed that too.

He says, “I got nothing for you on the VP front”

  9. Paulee & Mike Says:

Here is hoping, praying and being so in like with a wonderful person, who deserves only the best. It is true, it’s all about Mitt’s DNA. I’ll be sad, but life will go on and we all worked for a wonderful human being, made some great friends, held one another up in good and bad times. Just think, Mitt has grown so much as a person. He’ll be ready for anything after this.
He just amazes us everytime we see and hear him. God Bless, Mitt!

  10. JA Says:

I know this sounds overly dramatic, but I will feel absolutely heartbroken if it isn’t Mitt. He and his family are so wonderful, and they have been dragged through so much mud. The fact that his success and his religion are being used against him makes me sick.

  11. Mit 10 Says:

We should all know in about 48 hours. It should be Mitt but will it remains to be seen. McCain is the Maverick. I hope he does not leave conservatives behind. He needs us to get elected.

  12. Tami Says:

I will be heartbroken too if Mitt isn’t chosen. I still have this sick feeling inside that it’s not him because it’s going to be announced Friday at noonish time and Mitt and Huck will both be with McCain at that rally. It just seems strange to me that those two will both be present. I hope I’m wrong.

I so want it to be Mitt!

  13. JA Says:

I think we will probably have a good idea of who it is tomorrow. If the VP is to be unveiled at 11AM on Friday in Ohio, they will need to get Secret Service, etc. arranged beforehand. Tim Pawlenty will be in Denver tomorrow, and Mitt is supposedly going to be in CA with his family. So if the media pays close attention (if they can tear their eyes away from Obama), they should be able to figure it out.

  15. 2thepoint Says:

Seeing this clip was good for the soul!

For all the snarkster comments about Mitt being “wooden and stiff” this shows how engaging and warm Romney is while still addressing BIG questions… no slip-ups and some good laughs. Get Huckomedian yuckin’ it up and he not only falls off message - he falls flat.

Joe, Mike, Pat, and Mika were definitely in convention/party mindset. Mitt just flowed right along with them while throwing his McCain policy darts right into the liberal bull’s-eye. It’s good to hear him repeat, again, that WASHINGTON IS BROKEN!

You can tell that everyone on that panel enjoyed having Mitt stop by.

Ann, have a great time at the rally!

  16. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

Thanks for providing the link to that MSNBC segment–didn’t know MSNBC was good for anything.

What’s so impressive about Mitt Romney is that he is so good in situations like the one depicted. He is quick, charming, grounded, accomplished, sounds smart, and IS smart. He’s not a career politician, but rather a business guy who has become a talented politician. I can’t think of anyone else who comes close to his breath and depth. Sadly, I suspect, too few people appreciate how impressive he is; perhaps many find it threatening?

  17. EVELIO PEREZ Says:

  18. 2thepoint Says:

David, thanks for the info that McCain is meeting in AZ today to pick his Veep. Oh, to be a gecko on the chandelier at that meeting!!!

By late this afternoon or early evening McCain should have made his choice. If it’s Mitt, he’ll get a call sometime today. During Romney’s interview with Joe Scarborough this morning, you could feel the electricity in the air!

If y’all haven’t said your prayers for the Romneys today, this is the final hour to start talkin’. If you have, then say another prayer right now!!!

    From our mouths to God’s ears… :)

  19. Joe Says:

Mitt was making grand slams one right after the other on that interview w/ Joe Scarborough! The GOP party and its main-man Sen McCain would be nuts to not bring him onto the ticket!! Here I thought the Hardball interview was a homerun… this one was a grand slam. Mitt for VP!!

  20. Chris Says:

And there was pitiful Huck on Rush’s show. How can you tell he’s lying? His mouth is moving. I could not believe that he said that it was the Paul supporters, not the mccain/huckabee delegates that threw the West VA election, after MITT had WON. Just for that, Mac owes us, and owes us BIG.

Then, first order of business: Tell Huck to take a Hike. He’s not longer welcome in our big tent.

  21. 2thepoint Says:

Good one, Chris! I,too, heard Huckaweasel on Rush’s show; I choked and laughed my guts off when he said that the Paul supporters were big-bad-meanies. Oh, what a lying dope.

I read somewhere - NY for Mitt? - that McCain was considering Huckabee - again. I don’t know if that’s true, but if it is, then McCain and all his crew are bigger dopes. The caller right after MH stated that for all the protests MH made that he had no problem with Romney’s religion that he (the caller) absolutely believed Mike Huckabozo was flat-out lying to Rush and the American people. Yup.

Imagine if it were Mitt doing all the bad-mouthing about a possible V.P.? You can’t. It’s not in Mitt’s DNA to be cry-baby-spoil-sport-stupid.

If Romney is Veep, if Huckster hopes to keep a toe in politics, he’d better make some secret phone calls and call off the radical evangie gang and start distributing a couple hundred cases of MacMitt stickers.

  22. Eric Says:

Mitt is awesome, I mean he is just awesome, I really really hope he is on the ticket. Not only will I vote for Mac, donate money, and put up bumper stickers and signs, but I will volunteer for those victory task forces the week before the election and campaign like mad. But no Mitt, um, I write in Mitt on the ballot probably.

  23. 2thepoint Says:

Tropical Storm Gustav is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane and hit the Gulf Coast on Monday - opening day of our Repub Convention. I hope the Republican national leadership (Bush, Cheney, Duncan, Davidson, and Donatelli ) are making contingency plans. If a disaster is unfolding and our fellow Americans are in peril, canceling the convention would not be an option, but I don’t think it would be wise to carry on as normal. I hope somebody has informed McCain of Mother Nature’s turn of events.

    Anybody know anything?

  24. David D Says:

2thepoint: I live in New Orleans and I sure hope I do not lose electricity! I want to see Mitt on tv being nominated!

  25. 2thepoint Says:

David! I hope you don’t lose electricty either! That would be a big bummer… Hope Gustav sputters out before reaching the states.

McCain is on top of things:
    http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jihHrCRRZzC-rvT1HKiq81CPPoiQD92QTML01

“McCain aides also are monitoring Gustav, which was a hurricane but weakened to a tropical storm, in the Caribbean. It was threatening to hit the Gulf Coast almost exactly three years after Hurricane Katrina that has become a symbol of government incompetence under President Bush. Should the storm hit the U.S., aides will have to decide whether to rework McCain’s upcoming schedule to send him to the region — and whether doing so would be politically smart or not.”

  26. JA Says:

The article below was just posted on National Review Online and I sure hope it isn’t true. I thought Kay Bailey Hutchinson is pro-choice, so would that be a wise choice?

    Madame Veep? [Larry Kudlow]
Sources tell me that the two finalists for Mac’s veep are Tim Pawlenty and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Obviously, with the Hillary women’s revolt on the floor of the DNC and outside, McCain has a great opportunity if he nominates a woman.

My favorite was Alaska governor Sarah Palin. But she has been compromised by a bogus Alaska legislative investigation. So now all eyes are turning to Senator Hutchison, who has a strong conservative record down through the years. She’s a steady performer who will not be cowed by Joe Biden in the debates. I know her well and I have high respect for her.

This doesn’t mean Governor Pawlenty is out, it just means that Ms. Hutchison has moved high up on the list. That said, no one knows for sure.

Sources also tell me that Karl Rove and other Bush White House operatives continue to push hard for Romney. But one wag told me there’s a housing problem: Governor Romney has five; Sen. McCain and his wife have seven. That’s a lot of houses for one ticket. But putting sarcasm aside, Governor Romney is a fine person. He would make a very strong vice president.

  27. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

That sounds like a diversion to me, particularly since she is pro-choice. Moreover, I fail to see the value of a dark horse candidate emerging at this time.

  28. 2thepoint Says:

I think MacStaff is deliberately trying to keep the buzz going about the VP pick to counteract some of the Dem’s convention attention. So they throw out tidbits like the National Review article. A couple of days ago they floated the idea that Mac might name is Veep on Thursday instead of Friday. Just trying to fan the flames of anticipation…

How could it not be Mitt?! Nobody measures up like he does. And if the Huckaboohoos raise a stink about V.P. Romney I might have to start throwing eggs. :)

  29. Sarah Says:

I liked the ending of that article. It was funny. This whole housing thing has become something of a joke.

My Favorite line “But putting sarcasm aside, Governor Romney is a fine person. He would make a very strong vice president.”

  30. 2thepoint Says:

From the Florida Times Union: Mitt Romney is Most Qualified to be V.P.

  31. Beth Barnat Says:

    Mitt Romney is awesome!
    I’m praying for Mac&Mitt!
My mother, an 80 year old faithful Evangelical Christian from Indiana, is praying for Mac&Mitt, too!

I think they complement each other beautifully!

  32. bigmo Says:

Politico reported that KBH hasn’t even been vetted, so that’s a red herring.

  33. Chris Says:

If cantor is Mitt lite, why not go for the real thing? I see on other threads now Cantor is being Hyped, and still the Palin stuff. Geesh. I have a feeling the Veep was picked WEEKS ago, and all else is a head fake.

  34. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

I was actually impressed with Cantor at that press conference; maybe he can be Mitt Romney’s VP some day? ;-)

  35. 2thepoint Says:

As far as Kay Baily Hutchinson goes she IS pro-abortion. She’s what some folks in Texas like so that’s fine. If she were to be Mac’s Veep, she’d have to get on a regimen of perk-up vitamins and buy a new wig.

  36. 2thepoint Says:

Another voice on Huckabee from American Princess blog “Why I Still Don’t Like Mike Huckabee”: http://americanprincessblog.com/?p=3271

  37. JA Says:

    Just up on Politico:

McCain picks his VP - By MIKE ALLEN

Senator McCain has chosen his running mate and the person will be notified on Friday, a senior campaign official said.

A friend said McCain had pretty much settled on his selection early this week, and it crystallized in the past few days. Campaign manager Rick Davis flew to McCain’s cabin in Sedona, Ariz., a few days ago to confer, and another meeting about the choice was held with top aides Friday.

McCain is planning to roll out his vice presidential nominee in three battleground states this weekend, with large-scale rallies planned for Ohio, Pennsylvania and Missouri, according to aides and advisers.

The GOP nominee-in-waiting will move to immediately change the campaign conversation from Barack Obama’s football stadium acceptance speech Thursday to the new Republican ticket, to be revealed at a noontime Friday rally in a Dayton, Ohio, basketball arena. McCain and his running mate will then travel by bus to Pennsylvania, where they’ll hold an outdoor event at a minor league baseball stadium in Washington County, just southwest of Pittsburgh. On Sunday, the duo will head to suburban St. Louis for another event to be held at a minor league baseball stadium, this one in O’Fallon, Mo.

The Missouri rally is being billed to local Republicans as something of a unity rally, since it will feature McCain, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee — the GOP presidential finalists who effectively divided the vote three ways in the Show Me State’s Super Tuesday primary. A McCain aide warned not to read too much into McCain’s planned guests, however.

The campaign’s leadership has imposed a strict rule on staffers to not discuss the process and have further guarded the selection by parceling out very little information.

Speculation is increasingly centered on former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, although Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman remains an option and remains in the final mix.

The Democrat-turned-independent would help McCain underline his message of how he’s a different type of Republican, but the blowback from the party’s conservative base for picking a supporter of abortion rights is likely to render Lieberman an untenable choice.

  38. 2thepoint Says:

Gustav kills 23 in Haiti. Terrible. Here’s the latest:
    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080828/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/tropical_weather

Hope the powers-that-be have a plan for appropriate convention proceedings on Monday!

  39. JA Says:

Now they just changed the story at Politico to say the VP pick will be notified Thursday, not Friday.

  40. 2thepoint Says:

    Thanks, JA.

“A McCain aide warned not to read too much into McCain’s planned guests, however.” What does that mean? That having Huckleberry and Romney at the Missouri rally doesn’t mean that one of them is the VP? Or that one of them IS the VP?

I don’t believe McCain is going to notify his veep nominee on Friday. I think that if he hasn’t already called him/her as of now, he’s going to do so beefore this day is over.

  41. JA Says:

U.S. News and World Report is now saying Mitt is out and the three finalists were Lieberman, Hutchinson and Meg Whitman. If true, all I can say is ugh…

  42. JoeinMA Says:

JA - if true then I don’t need to spend any time tracking presidential race into November…cause I am out.

  43. bigmo Says:

JA, they can’t be correct cause Hutchinson wasn’t vetted.

  44. David D Says:

They are just trying to throw everyone off base. It will be Mitt. It has to be Mitt.

  45. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

Joe Lieberman, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Meg Whitman still in the mix. Developing….

This is just Team McCain having fun with disinformation.

  46. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

It may not be Mitt Romney, but no way that’s the Final Three.

  47. Marybeth Says:

JA, if that’s the case, then McCain is dumber than I thought.

With all the Republican talent on the sidelines, I have a really hard time that the 3 finalists would be a liberal pro-choice independent, a boring semi-conservative from Texas who gives him as much advantage as Biden gives Obama (read NONE), and the former CEO of Ebay who was Mitt’s chief fundraiser.

And to not have Pawlenty in the final mix doesn’t seem right.

    Something doesn’t fit.

  48. Marybeth Says:

StevenInBrooklyn, I may have to agree with you.

  49. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

It may not be right; its doesn’t seem right, even for McCain, but it still makes me queasy and depressed.

  50. JoeinMA Says:

It will be written by historians “How a VP non-pick Lost McCain the Presidency” if Mitt is not chosen.

  51. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

It’s not the Final Three especially because not putting Mitt Romney in there would be gratuitously insulting to…people like us.

  52. 2thepoint Says:

I think they’re just throwing the media of Mitt’s trail…

  53. 2thepoint Says:

Make that “off” Mitt’s trail… I’m typing fast ‘cuz I’m feeling some anxiety right now. Anybody relate? :)

  54. Marybeth Says:

    I think you’re right, 2thepoint.

In any event, it is hard to believe that neither
Mitt nor Pawlenty is in the finals . . . even coming from Mc cain

  55. JA Says:

It does sound goofy, and my first thought was that it couldn’t possibly be correct. Then I remembered it’s John McCain we’re talking about, who has demonstrated some questionable taste in people (exhibit A: Lindsey Graham)…

  56. David D Says:

I am also feeling much anxiety!

  57. David D Says:

If he picks Huckaweasel, I will have to check myself into therapy.

  58. 2thepoint Says:

    Ha!

David, if it’s Huckaweasel, you’ll be in therapy and I’m gonna get myself a straitjacket and hang upside down for a week.

  59. Marybeth Says:

Rumors and false trails and trial balloons have been raised all week. As I have said, I think McCain and his advisors must be having a good time watching all of us go nuts.

Just watch where the Secret Service detail goes tomorrow. That will tell us everything we need to know!

  60. 2thepoint Says:

I think Mitt is in Nevada tomorrow and is then coming here to California (his home in La Jolla) for a day or two. Ann is probably already here. Hey, if anyone sees her getting her nails or hair done we could be in business!

  61. 2thepoint Says:

You’re right Marybeth. MacStaff has been a bit sadistic with their wild-goose-chase methods.

Let’s think positively. What will you all do to celebrate when Mitt is chosen as V.P. nominee?

  62. Marybeth Says:

Politico and NY Times are both saying that Mccain has made his pick.

    From the NYT:
“Mr. McCain’s decision is known only to his small inner circle of advisers, no more than three or four people, who have refused all public discussion on the matter. Republicans close to the campaign said that the top contenders remained the same three men who have been the source of speculation for weeks: former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, Gov. Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota and, possibly, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut. . . ”

“Mr. Romney remained the most talked-about possibility on Wednesday among Republican Party officials and on cable television, not least because of the theory that he would help Mr. McCain win Michigan, a crucial state in this election and where Mr. Romney’s father served as governor.”

    So there you go.

  63. Marybeth Says:

btw, who knows who the “Republicans close to the campaign” are.

  64. 2thepoint Says:

One of them has to be Lindsey Graham.

  65. Marybeth Says:

Oh, and in the interest of full disclosure, here’s the link to the NYT article!

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/us/politics/28repubs.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Everyone say prayers tonight that it’s Mitt!

  66. 2thepoint Says:

Joe Biden is speaking right now at the Dem convention. Mitt’s opponent.

  67. 2thepoint Says:

    Absolutely, Marybeth!

  68. Karen Says:

Of course I am in for the prayers!!! I am all over it!!!!

    Who’s with me????

    K

  69. Marybeth Says:

Could you imagine Lieberman at the VP debate with Biden?

Partial birth abortion? Yes, I agree with you, Joe.

A woman’s right to choose? Yes, I agree with you, Joe.

Single-payer health care? Yes, I agree with you, Joe.

and on and on and on . . .

    Pawlenty?

Global warming? Yes, I agree with you, Joe.

Big government? Yes, I agree with you, Joe.

Was I an initial supporter of the surge in Iraq? Well, no, Joe . . . oh, YOU were? Like my running mate? Oops!

and on and on and on . . .

  70. Marybeth Says:

Mitt’s the only one of those 3 who would crush Biden in a debate.

Mitt’s the one the Dems really don’t want on the ticket.

  71. 2thepoint Says:

Karen, with you and Marybeth, we’ve got a prayer circle of three going right now.

    Who will join with us?

    Come on, people!

  72. Karen Says:

I’m telling you, according to Zogby on Monday, McCain can only win with Romney, if he picks anyone else, he will lose!

The pray needs to be specific and that is to bless McCain with the wisdom he needs to make the RIGHT call!

THE PRAYERS NEED TO BE SPECIFIC AND THAT IS TO BLESS MCCAIN WITH THE WISDOM HE NEEDS TO MAKE THE RIGHT CALL, PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE OF HIS LIFE AND OURS! AT THE LEAST, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT CALLS!!!!!

  73. Karen Says:

Yes folks, who will join us in prayer tonight, prayers for the great country of America, prayers for Johh McCain and prayers for Mitt Romney???

  74. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

In 2008 with new media, the single VP debate that’s scheduled will have little or no impact. What will have impact is campaign rallys, covered by the media, and the VP’s presence in the media.

  75. 2thepoint Says:

    Good points, Marybeth!

I didn’t hear it all but Joe Biden just made a HUGE slip giving his speech by saying “when John McCain is the next president” … A small, horrified laugh began to rise from the audience. Then I heard him say “freudian slip - freudian slip.”

  76. JA Says:

I’m with you - I’ve been praying all day.

  77. 2thepoint Says:

Wonderful, JA! Let’s unite and raise the roof in the heavens!

  78. Marybeth Says:

SteveInBrooklyn, I don’t agree with you about the VP debate. In 2004, Cheney made mincemeat out of Edwards. And remember Edwards’ deliberate mention of his lesbian daughter Mary, Cheney’s reaction, and the reaction of the American people? It was one of the turning points in that election, I think.

    The VP debate IS important.

  79. Karen Says:

    Thanks JA

  80. Marybeth Says:

And remember Lloyd Bentsen and Dan Quayle: “I knew Jack Kennedy. And you are no Jack Kennedy.”

Yes, it was 20 years ago, but those 2 sentences still resound today.

Thank goodness Bush 41 was running for Reagan’s third term or that could have been a game-changer.

  81. Matthew Kilburn Says:

    pray, yes, deffinately.

That said, we need to be prepared if he is not the pick. Depending on who the pick is (assuming it isn’t Mitt), that will determine how many of us support the ticket (I can’t support a number of the people mentioned).

However, we need to be prepared to start a dedicated effort ASAP that could serve as a pro-romney, draft-romney, etc. site in 2012. Unseating a sitting VP in the primaries would be very difficult - to my knowledge, it has never happened, but it MIGHT be possible if we work at it starting on day one.

  82. Brian Says:

I would not be surprised if that is the final 3 for lots of reasons.

    1) Mitt, from all reports(and I do not believe it is spin), has been highly pessimistic of his own chances. I think he has a better read on this than many.

2)Unlike Rove and the smarter people in politics, the McCain camp think they win by trying to get the Hilary vote. While you certainly want those you can get, McCain would be better uniting conservatives with Romney, winning the independents, and trying to win some of the key battleground states.

    3) McCain has bought into the “do no harm” philosphy. Rove and many others were trying to convince him that Romney, unlike most VPs, really could help in some of the battleground states and would not cost him a single state he would otherwise have won due to Huckbigots being upset.

I think McCain loses unless Obama really implodes — and it is going to be due to CO, NM, and MI (and NV is going to be close).

  83. SED Says:

There is only one theme I want to see out of the RNC next week.

    Reform.

I thought that Bill Clinton finally made a coherent case for Obama tonight. Joe Biden is not doing bad either. Even though Barack is probably going to hurt himself with the greek god background at Invesco Field. They may get a bump out their convention that slows or stops McCain very apparant momentum.

If Mitt is the VP there can be a credible case for reform. Washington Is Broken should be the theme. If americans feel that its business as usual or our policies are not different from the past we’re gonna lose.

    What does everyone else think?

  84. Jason Says:

The DNC makes me lauch. Check out this post by
    William Clark Love
    . Makes me laugh everytime.

  85. Marybeth Says:

Let’s hope it’s reform, SED . . . and reform needs to start from the top, with McCain making a solid VP choice, instead of looking in left field!

Seriously, though, reform would be an excellent theme. And Mitt started it!

McCain has been almost shamelessly borrowing from Mitt since Mitt bowed out of the race in February. Hopefully McCain will return the all the favors by selecting Mitt.

  86. JA Says:

Ok, I have to post one more article before I go to bed. This one is from the Boston Globe’s Political Intelligencer.

McCain on V.P. clock - By Michael Kranish, Globe Staff

DAYTON, Ohio — While a national television audience settles in to watch Senator Barack Obama’s acceptance speech Thursday night, Senator John McCain plans to arrive in this crucial swing state in preparation for unveiling his running mate.

The announcement is expected to be made officially Friday morning at a Dayton rally, followed by events over the weekend in two other swing states, Pennsylvania and Missouri, on the way to the Republican convention in St. Paul, which starts Monday.

The McCain campaign hopes to keep the pick a secret until the announcement, having watched how Democrat Obama’s effort to unveil his pick by text message to supporters was scooped by leaks to the media last week. The McCain campaign declined to comment on a report tonight in The New York Times that McCain has settled on his choice. The newspaper did not say who McCain had chosen, saying the name is known only to his small inner circle of advisers who have refused to discuss the matter. And McCain, who was ensconced at his Arizona retreat, told the Dayton Daily News today that he hasn’t decided.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who Republicans say is among those being considered, said earlier this week that he had never talked to McCain about the job. Tonight, Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom declined to respond directly when asked whether Romney has been notified of a decision, referring any questions to the McCain campaign.

Romney’s schedule leaves open the possibility that he could be appear with McCain in Ohio Friday. After making the rounds Tuesday outside the Democratic convention in Denver to promote McCain and attack Obama, Romney spent today in Nevada and is slated to be at private events Thursday in California.

McCain also is believed to be looking at Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, former Governor Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania, and Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. The McCain campaign has left open the possibility that another candidate might also be under consideration.

Romney and Pawlenty today batted away questions about their vice presidential prospects. Pawlenty, appearing at the Minnesota State Fair, joked that he was “going to be vice president … of my fantasy football league.”

Romney noted that McCain can carry Utah — home to many fellow Mormons and where he led the successful 2002 Winter Olympics — without him. But Romney could help McCain carry the battleground state of Michigan, where his father George was a popular governor. And with his business background, he could help McCain on economic issues, where polls show Obama with an edge in voters’ confidence.

A Republican strategist who advises Romney said today that all of the top prospects believe they won’t be picked — which he said is a testament to the McCain campaign’s effort to keep the announcement a secret.

The strategist, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to comment on the selection process, said many Republicans would be unhappy if the pick was Lieberman, the self-described “independent Democrat” who has endorsed McCain but who is anathema to some Republicans due to his support of abortion rights. Ridge also favors abortion rights, but he remains in the mix because of his close friendship with McCain, a fellow Vietnam War veteran.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll released today said that 20 percent of McCain’s Republican supporters would be less likely to vote for the Arizona senator if he chooses a running mate who favors abortion rights.

The survey also found that 20 percent of voters, regardless of party affiliation, would be more likely to back McCain if he picks Romney, the highest percentage of six prospects mentioned in the survey. But 16 percent said the choice of Romney would make them less likely to back McCain.

  87. Tami Says:

Over at Hot Air, someone posted saying that McCain has opened up his Campaign HQ in Boston. Now why would he do this if Mitt weren’t his pick? Hmm… some food for thought anyway :)

  88. Karen Says:

Well then, I have a question. Why do they (the Romney camp) just keep referring it to McCain instead of just saying “I’m not it”? This is at least the second time that I know of where they have responded that way…

Don’t you think it would be easier if it wasn’t you, just to say so???

  89. Marybeth Says:

Tami, is this the first campaign HQ McCain’s opened in Massachusetts? Cause if it is, Boston would be the most sensible location.

  90. Tami Says:

Umm hmm.. I don’t know. It just sounds like it was already a bostom HQ there and they just opened it up again? That’s my understanding anyway.

  91. Marybeth Says:

It’s hard to say, Karen . . . it could either be a decoy or it could be that they really don’t know.

Either way, Team McCain is doing a much better job than the Obama campaign in keeping things hushed up!

  92. Tami Says:

Well look what else I found in the same thread over at Hot Air.. http://www.johnmccainvp.com/

Most are saying it’s another head-fake.. someone said it’s a fake cuz the coding is different… oh man.. I’ll keep reading that thread and see what else I read.

  93. Marybeth Says:

Will we get the breathless, non-stop coverage of 3 homes - Mitt’s, Pawlenty’s, and Lieberman’s - like the MSM did last Friday with Biden, Kaine, and Bayh?

  94. SED Says:

I am starting to feel that if the pick is a safe one like Pawlenty or Cantor alot of people are going to be upset. They maybe great guys and have some executive experience, but at the end of the day pundits and supporters want to see Mitt Romney or a sensationalist pick like Sarah Palin.

We are going to find out in 36 hours…

  95. 2thepoint Says:

Yeah, Tami. Another “made ya look, made ya stare” moment. With his own bare hands, McCain would wring the neck of anybody dumb enough to put up a website tonight with the name of his pick! :)

  96. Marybeth Says:

I’ve seen that at Little Green Footballs, Tami.

The general consensus there is that it’s a head fake, and that McCain would not authorize that website and say that his Veep choice would be announced Friday.

    I agree.

  97. 2thepoint Says:

Sed, 36 loooooooooong hours. Good to know we’re all in it together!

    Pray!

  98. Tami Says:

Whew! *wipes brow* LOL This was the first I seen it and I definitely looked lol.. It’s gotta be a fake.

Gotta know though, what is Little Green Footballs?

  99. Marybeth Says:

Sarah Palin would be a good conservative pick, but she takes the non-experience of the Obamessiah right off the table.

And experience, “my friends,” is McCain’s biggest talking point.

  100. Marybeth Says:

It’s really a great site, Tami, if you don’t mind a few obscenities once in a while. The posters are really witty and bring a lot of substance. They really make me think.

The owner of Little Green Footballs was one of the guys who helped to expose Dan Rather’s fake National Guard memo right before the 2004 presidential election.

That was what Dan Rather was let go from CBS for.

  101. Tami Says:

Oh wow, how interesting. I’ll go visit and check it out. I’m assuming it is http://www.littlegreenfootballs.com ??

  102. Marybeth Says:

    You got it, Tami.

    On another note:

Is it just me, or can no one else sleep tonight?

I’m so hyped up about the Veep selection. I keep thinking back to McCain’s promise at CPAC in February - where Mitt bowed out - to us conservatives: I know I have to earn your trust.

Well, so far in his campaign I’ve seen little evidence of that promise being fulfilled.

McCain has irritated me to the point that if he doesn’t pick Mitt, I will really feel disconnected from this presidential election - and may not bother to vote in it.

  103. Leslie Says:

If McCain picks Pawlenty, this will be the most boring ticket ever, with the exception of Dole/Kemp, and we know how well that turned out! Mitt brings some badly needed energy and class to the ticket. If McCain is too self-centered to see that, than he deserves to lose.

  104. Tami Says:

Marybeth… I’m pretty hyped about this too. It’s only minutes after 10 pm here.. I’m a late-nighter so I’m good for another couple hours LOL

But yeah I can’t quit reading all the political sites I can find. Been trying to get other work done here at the pc… but nooo, I gotta keep reading about Mitt LOL

  105. 2thepoint Says:

Marybeth, I’m with you - no sleeping tonight. I’m on the west coast - it’s 9:13 PM here. I’m going to take a break and walk through my neighborhood for awhile - let my thoughts settle and say a few prayers for Mitt in the great outdoors.

Leslie, I agree. No offense meant to Pawlenty, but if he’s picked, the Republican ticket will be as moving as a bucket of tar on an iceberg.

    Please, let us have Romney!

  106. Tami Says:

Leslie, I agree.. if it’s not Romney, then I will lose all interest in this entire election I think.

  107. 2thepoint Says:

With McCain making his decision earlier today, you just know he’s phoned his VP choice. Whoever it is, I imagine they’re not sleeping either. Their household must be in a flutter - talk about scurry, hurry, and flurry! And, if it’s not Mitt, I’ll be in a fury!

  108. Tami Says:

LOL I like your rhyming 2thepoint…

Seriously, can you imagine being asked to be the VP of the US?!?! No, I don’t think he’ll be sleeping much once he finds out.

  109. Karen Says:

Argh, I too just cannot stand this. But, 2 things are going to help me sleep. I slept terrible last night and my allergy medicine makes me pretty sleepy and I only take half dose.

I am all atwitter inside. I keep checking back and forth. You all know my prayers, I make no secret of them. God bless America, God bless John McCain to make a right decision and God please bless Mitt Romney.

2tp, I liked your rhyming, pretty funny! I feel the exact same way. I don’t know what I will do if Mitt is not the pick. I will have no enthusiasm for this race and neither will alot of others I fear. God please help Mc to make the right decision

  110. Beth Barnat Says:

There once was a man named McCain.
    The Democrats called him McSame.
    He chose a VP,
And we all prayed that he,
Had Mitt as his very first name.

  111. Karen Says:

I like it Beth… yes, we here are saying our prayers… it could be a long couple of days!

  112. Beth Barnat Says:

Karen, I am nervous, too. I can’t think of a better person. I even read a comment on one of the Dem sites today - a lifelong Democrat - she said she was voting for McCain (can’t stand BO) and if Mitt was chosen as the VP it would be even better.

  113. Marybeth Says:

Well, I’m off to sleep. Or to try. Morning comes early for us over here in the Eastern time zone, and I have a business to run!

Good night to all. Prayers for all of you - and that McCain did the right thing.

  114. StevenInBrooklyn Says:

    Back at you, Marybeth.

  115. 2thepoint Says:

Back from my walk and couldn’t help but think that the stars twinkling above me were also shining on the household of our new V.P. nominee. Gazing at the night sky has a way of putting things in perspective… good to know we have a Creator who cares about what is going on in the good ol’ U.S.A.

Beth, that is a very clever limerick!Love it.

Marybeth, hope you get a good night’s rest so you can take care of business tomorrow.

Karen, we’re all praying with you. And Steve, we know you’re keepin’ the faith in Brooklyn!

    G’night all.

  116. Beth Barnat Says:

    Thanks, 2thepoint!

My mom always reminds me that God puts people into power and He also takes them down.

This is a time for me to trust.

I think we would be so blessed to have Mitt Romney in the second spot.

I hope McCain thinks so, too.

  117. GottaBeMitt Says:

I agree with everyone here! We must keep praying for the one vp who will lead our nation with honor. This is my first election where I am old enough to vote, and I don’t want to end up staying home because McCain didn’t choose Mitt. I was fortunate enough to have met Mitt at a campaign rally during the primaries and he is such an incredible person! Mitt brings everything to the vp ticket and if elected, we can all watch the anger on Huckleberry’s face. God bless you Mitt, and may the strength of all your loyal supporters carry you to the vp nomination.

  118. bigmo Says:

Cute poem, but Mitt’s very first name is Willard. I hope McCain doesn’t blow this.

  119. Beth Barnat Says:

Hey Bigmo, I know it’s Willard, but when folks use that name it’s usually in a derogatory way, so I used Mitt.
I think the man is fantastic and we would be very blessed to have him on the ticket.
Now Mitt Romney really does give me hope for a better future.
I hope Mac doesn’t blow it, too.
    Praying all day.
    Beth
