Layton Book Rips National GOP For Anti-Mormon Bias

August 18th, 2008 Posted in Evangelicals, LDS, Mitt Romney, Mormons

I don’t know enough about the subject to even hazard a guess as to whether Mr. Foster’s book is accurate or not. I have posted this article as a FYI service to our readers.

LAYTON — Frustrated by the treatment former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney received from the “religious right” in his run for U.S. president, a Layton historian has written a book documenting the anti-Mormon bias amidst the national GOP party.

The 244-page, softcover book, “A Different God? Mitt Romney, The Religious Right and the Mormon Question” by Craig L. Foster, lists for $24.95 and is now available online at Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com and is expected to reach book stores by Aug. 21.

The book was published by Greg Kofford Books, a Salt Lake City publishing company.

Foster, a 30-year GOP member and former Davis County party chairman, said his intent is to demonstrate there was an anti-Mormon bias by the “religious right” within the national party against Romney, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

That bias was a significant factor in Romney’s failed attempt at the presidency, the 48-year-old Foster said.

Romney, who made Utah’s 2002 Olympic Winter Games a success, received about 90 percent of Utah’s Republican vote in the Feb. 5 presidential western primary, well outdistancing the field.

What frustrates Foster, an LDS Church genealogist and historian, is Utah Republicans are conservative party members who have been devoted to GOP candidates, including giving President George W. Bush his largest margin of victory in his 2004 re-election bid.

We all remember the South voting as a bloc for Huckabee. Mitt was strong in most of the early primary states, won Michigan going away and won most of the Western states in landslides, but the string of losses in the South was impossible to overcome, especially with the later narrow losses in Missouri and California.

The Bountiful Republican does admit Romney’s downfall in his campaign may have stemmed from opposition he received within the national party from segments in the South, where some view Mormons as being members of a cult.”When you get right down to it, it was a slap in the face of Utah Republicans,” Foster said, who, in the book, refers to the Mormon bias in boxing terms as “a low blow.”

While Foster and Christensen remain doubtful Romney will be named to McCain’s ticket, the state’s leading Republican remains optimistic.

State Republican Party Chairman Stan Lockhart said, based on everything he has read and heard from those within the party, Romney remains on McCain’s “short list” of potential running mates.

Before dropping out of the race for president, Romney had won 11 states, Lockhart said, and seemed to be receiving good response from GOP members across the nation.

Foster has authored two books and co-authored a book with Newell G. Bringhurst, “The Mormon Quest for the Presidency.”

Politico is reporting that McCain will announce on his birthday “the 29th” who he is picking, in Ohio. I started thinking he would do this, to keep Romney as close to the convention, to limit the potential controversey. Lets pray its him. McCain will listen to the spirit.

    Ohio is Portman country.

I just read the same thing Aaron. I’m hoping it’s Mitt too!! *SIGH* Here is a link for those who might wanna read: http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080819/pl_politico/12619

Sounds like this book might be a good one. I might consider buying it.

    Where is KKSM?

KKSM: She is now Karen. I’m sure she will check in soon.

    Hi Tami,

Ever since we did our ComMITTed to Mitt luncheon and Nate posted my picture and named me, I figured my cover was blown and I might as well start going by my name which is Karen. Thanx for asking about me. That was kind of you.

    EVERYONE!
I am now having a nervous stomach in regards to this veepstakes thing. The AOL pol that Evelio sent to us has Mitt ahead. I hope McCain listens to the people who keep sending him the resounding message that they want Mitt. I hope and pray the evangelicals don’t get their way. That would be disastrous for this great land we love.

I cling to the comfort that this is a country that God loves and he does good things for us. Everyone who prays, please do. Many hearts and voices reach His ears. Come on folks… shall we pray? Shall we talk to the only one who can make a difference???

  9. Paulee & Mike Says:

Just voted, Mitt was 1st!!!!! everyone vote!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Karen Says:

Paulee, it is so nice to be on here at the same time is you, that is if you are still on here. I did vote as you can see, I sure hope McCain listens to America… KAREN!!!

  11. Paulee & Mike Says:

Karen: You are such a loyal and good person. Mitt would be so proud of you. I’m so glad we have this site, it keeps me sane. This has been a challenge. Imagine how Mitt feels. He should have been in Mccain’s place, I so blame HUCK and his E’S. Pawlenty has not been vetted and has no name recognition. PRAY, PRAY, PRAY! We need Mitt!! and ANN!

  12. Karen Says:

Yes, let us all (who believe in or enjoy praying) get to it. I actually have been all along and I suspect everyone has. It is such an important thing! I don’t feel we can let out prayer guard down for one minute. America is way too important to leave to chance. I have believed that for so long that I cannot now disbelieve, it is ingrained in me.

Man, I am fired up tonight!

At this point, my guess is that the best (and only) way to divine who has or will be picked is to study who is keeping a somewhat low or innocuous profile between now and 8/29 (it would be somewhat unbecoming of a VP to be giving too many interviews, etc.

Is Mr. Romney still at the Olympics, as I believe, he had planned to be? That would be a good way to keep a low/innocuous profile ;-)

  15. Karen Says:

SteveinBrooklyn, Mitt was in town over the weekend to do the Stephanopouls interview. He mentioned on there that he had just ‘returned from China and the Olympics’ or something like that, so he is home unless he went back but that makes no sense whatsoever!

    Thanks for the link

Bayh is a good pick for Obama. Makes up a lot of ground. But not enough to win. Two senators? Not. Bayh is not as slick as Obama, but he did clean Paw Paw’s clock on one of the Sunday shows.

  18. Karen Says:

Chris, now you scared me! If T-Paw got clocked by Bayh, what kind of Vp choice is he? I pray so hard he is NOT the choice. It does not bode well for our America if he got clocked by Bayh… I love Indiana, but not the dem/idiot part of it!

  19. Tami Says:

Oh cool Karen… glad to see your cover was blown LOL Just kidding! I should’ve put two and two together but didn’t.

  20. Chris Says:

    Karen,
That’s my point. Bayh easily took Palenty down, and shed no blood in the process! It was an easy hit. Jason Lewis, standing in for Rush last week said that Pawlenty is McCain the younger. I firmly believe that Romney is McCains only hope. We’ve been told times, dates and people Mac will be announcing - and it never happened. I’m afraid. Really afraid that this country is heading for something far worse than Carter. Romney is the only hope.

I do find it interesting that after the Huckabee gaff late last week, he went on fox to ‘clarify’ his statements and say he would vote for McCain/Romney. I think he got his clocked cleaned by the GOP. It’s not like Huckabee to be concillatory.

  21. 2thepoint Says:

At the end of the day, checking in with all of you good people at ComMITTed is almost as good as plopping onto the recliner with a big bowl of Haagen Dazs Butter Pecan ice cream!

So much going on today… Thank you Tami, Evelio, Matt A., and StevenInBrooklyn for your links. Good reading all of your posts – lots to digest.

In 11 days, looks like we’ll know who McCain’s vice presidential pick will be. Have we done all within our power to educate our nation on Romney’s leadership and strengths? If the answer is no, let’s get to work and make these last few days count. Like you, Karen, and so many here, I firmly believe God hears our prayers and always answers them. I think God knows how we all feel about Mitt by now, so let’s ask Him to give McCain clarity of thought in choosing the best man for the conservative cause and our nation. There is real power in sincere prayer. Also, let’s pray to accept His will. After all, He has the BIG picture in His hands.

It’s been over six months since Mitt dropped out of the presidential primary. After such a great disappointment, all of you here have made the time pass enjoyably. Let’s huddle closer together as we await THE NEWS and take comfort in knowing there is a greater power at work.

P.S. When this is over, we deserve a GALLON of Haagen Dazs! :)

  22. Paulee & Mike Says:

You make me smile. You have a wonderful way with words.I missed Huck saying he would vote for M&M. He must finally realize the party is over. He just wanted this so bad, he overdid, his people overdid. Mitt sailed through first class. What a quality person. Let’s pray his reward will come soon, if not, let’s pray His work will be done someday, and we will all be able to see our hopes for our country come true. For now, the huddle sounds great. I’ll have a hot fudge Sundae!

  23. Paulee & Mike Says:

At the AOL poll, it seems you can vote more than once! What’s up? Mitt is still 1st, however.

  24. Karen Says:

2thepoint and Paulee: The last time I saw H, he seemed a little cowed. I hope that is a good sign. My, we are all so glum around here. I can’t even pick an ice cream out. This has been a very cathartic place for me to visit as well. It has really helped in these months. I feel if Mitt is not ‘the one’ there will be millions of depressed Americans out there…

  25. Karen Says:

I voted for my whole family last night, I thought they wanted me to.

  26. Paulee & Mike Says:

I just hope Huck’s people won’t flood that vote.

  27. Karen Says:

Well, so far, so good. I wish they said how many have voted though…

  29. Andrew Says:

One thing that I’ve always admired about most Mormons was the absence of victimology. Yes, there are those who discriminate against them, but unlike most other groups (from blacks to gays to the disabled, etc.) Mormons don’t seem to say “hey, look at me, I’m being oppressed!” Without complaints, they earn their respect from their former doubters. I hope that this trend continues for it is the correct reaction to bigotry.

  31. Chris Says:

HughHewitt is saying the e e-mails may have backfired and helped solidify Romney in the Mavericks heart. Hope so.

  32. Paulee & Mike Says:

    Just voted, thanks.

  33. Karen Says:

Can you give a readable source for that Chris? I would love to read that. I really like Hugh Hewitt and would someday like to read his book. There is always so much to read though!

We all need to send simple emails now that say just two or three words: Pick Mitt, We want Mitt, etc. Ones they can see quickly and not discount. Putting it in the subject line should do it. ?K

  34. Karen Says:

Ok, brainiacs, I have a question. It is perhaps a legal one. Actually, it is more than one question. Is it legal (1) and would it help Mitt (2) and not be done just for us, to have the Utah delegates notify McCain that he can have all of Mitt’s delegate votes if he puts McCain on as VP.

That was just a question. I for one vote for them to do the rule of law and send the delegates there for him I guess. Taking into account that he has asked them to release his delegates; his desires should be met if it is the right thing to do all the way around.

    What think all of ye???

  35. Chris Says:

    Hughhewitt.com

  36. Chris Says:

Yes, it is legal, after they cast their votes for Mitt. The problem is that our laws here in Utah state that our delegates must vote for the winner - regardlss of who it was, on the first ballot. Which means McCain will not get the nom on the first ballot, but on the second.

At least that’s my understanding. It could work to our benefit, or it could not. It’s a gray area.
