Ohio Activists Reject Romney….Caution: Moonbat Alert!

If this is a legitimate article, the “activist” quoted is displaying logic that has more holes in it than a piece of Swiss cheese. Let’s dissect the quotes.

Ohio activists reject Romney
He would be poor VP choice, they say

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

WASHINGTON – Some Ohio social conservatives say they know whom they don’t want John McCain to pick as his running mate: former Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney.

In a move that may say as much about their continuing uneasiness regarding McCain as it does about their mistrust of Romney, an alliance of Buckeye State social conservatives is trying to form a group: Social Conservatives Against Romney.

“Social Conservatives against Romney.” I suppose it would be too much to ask what these folks are for, like a strong pro life position that has been held for several years after what I believe was a sincere change of heart, a pro business position that favors a corporate tax cut that will enhance America’s competitive position, a pro military policy that will protect America from the totalitarians that would love to destroy us and our ideas of democracy and freedom.

Although McCain is keeping his potential vice-presidential choices a tightly held secret, Romney is said to be on the short list.

Romney is said to be on the short list. I wonder why that is. Could it be because of his unrivaled competency in so many areas, his evident intelligence and grasp of complex issues. Where is Huckabee on that list? Perhaps he is not on the list because he has been correctly categorized as a smooth talking lightweight?

“Christians are praying earnestly for the right person,” said Diane Stover, a Parma resident who was a delegate for GOP candidate Mike Huckabee, a favorite of many social conservatives, in the Ohio primary. “McCain wouldn’t have been our person. But we definitely feel like it would be a huge help to John McCain to pick someone we can be confident will represent the value-voter position. I don’t think it helps him (McCain) at all in Ohio if he picks Romney.”

Oh right. You folks have obviously distinguished your selves as great candidate-pickers. Your first choice was asked during the primaries if he was a “foreign policy expert” and he infamously replied: “No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.”

A McCain spokesman said the campaign won’t comment on any aspect of the process of selecting a running mate.

Jane Maines of Hamilton, also a former Huckabee delegate, said the anti-Romney Ohioans hope their group will spread to other states.

They apparently want to extend the winning streak they enjoyed during the primary into the general election.

Stover and Maines are among about a dozen activists who met near Cincinnati last week, with Stover participating via phone from the Cleveland area, to discuss how to launch the group.
“We’re hoping this will become hugely widespread,” Maines said.

Big things can start from small beginnings, but in this group’s case, I think it will probably be more of a case of starting small and then shrinking.

She said she doesn’t consider the anti-Romney effort to be anti-McCain, despite saying McCain is not a “real conservative.” She said she and other conservatives will support McCain in November, noting that he has had a consistent anti-abortion voting record as a senator from Arizona.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, is too inconsistent on issues such as abortion and gay rights “for someone who calls himself a conservative,” Maines said.

The group overlooks McCain flips on taxes, domestic drilling and his huge flip on illegal immigration….All this makes me think that this tiny group in more about religious intolerance then it is about Gov. Romney’s political positions. As a Reagan Republican and as a conservative Catholic, I will repeat what I started saying almost two years ago. Mitt Romney more closely represents me and the values that I share with my Catholic and Protestant friends and associates than any of the candidates in either party this election cycle. If Mitt Romney does not get the VP nod, I will be ready to support him again in 2012.

People like those in this group are so pathetic. It really is shocking that a few Christian folks out there are still SO anti-Romney, and for all the wrong reasons. Claiming he can’t be trusted on social issues is just a mask for their bigotry. It’s so obvious, sad, and disappointing.

Once again, I am so turned off by the evangelical movement in America. Seems like all they do is oppose anyone who isn’t a carbon copy of themselves, regardless of their core values/ability to lead. I can only hope we are hearing and seeing the “loud minority” here. Although after the eye-opening primaries (shedding light on true bigotry in America from these groups), I am losing hope fast.

  2. bigmo Says:

The newspaper is reporting on a group consisting of a dozen people in a city of that size? Sure, if they were a terrorist group or something I might deem that newsworthy, but they could only round up a dozen anti-Mormons? Anyway, the fact that they are Huckabee backers speaks volumes about the amount of vetting they do on a candidate. I’m sure they get all of their info on Mitt from MassResistance or the DNC press releases. Yawn. Nice dissection of the article though, John.

  3. bigmo Says:

Wait I just reread the article. I should replace “city” with “state.” Jeez.

  4. Karen Says:

The Huckabee wanabees strike again! this is disgusting, but it is good that there are not more of them… Thank Heavens. Perhaps smart people are being able to separate the truth from the lies… let’s hope and pray.

Thanks John for bringing this one to light. Don’t you think it is interesting that they rear their ‘ugly’heads right after a bunch of people in Ohio made their desire for Mitt loud and clear????

People need to grow up, get rid of hate and learn to do unto others as He would have us do!

Perturbing and disturbing but again I am grateful there are not more of them, and WHY IS THIS NEWSWORTHY? Whoever brought that up was certainly correct!!

  5. Doug Says:

Not everyone in Ohio is against Mitt. Here’s an article ( and can you believe it - it was on CNN ): http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/11/mccain.vp/

Also, a powerful voice for the evangelicals, Richard Land, had this to say about Mitt: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/08/08/politics/politicalplayers/main4331863.shtml

    Let’s pray McCain picks Mitt!

  6. Doug Says:

    NyforMitt.com’s Jenn wrote this too:

Huckabee quietly taped a pilot in New York for a weekend cable TV show that is set to debut on Fox News Channel sometime this fall.

And what if Sen. John McCain wins in November? Would he take a cabinet post if offered?

“Why would I want to do that?” Huckabee says.

“Why would I go back to telling everybody in the world how much money I make and . . . barely surviving to have some obscure cabinet post and have some 20-year-old from the White House telling me what I’m gonna do?”

I HOPE ROMNEY IS NOT ON THE TICKET. WE DON’T WANT HIM GOING DOWN WITH A SINKING SHIP, AND IF/WHEN MCCAIN LOSES, WE DON’T WANT THAT LOSS BLAMED ON OUR GUY. LET’S HOPE MCCAIN CHOOSES HUCKABEE. THEN THE TWO CAN GO DOWN TOGETHER AND WE WILL NEVER HAVE TO HEAR FROM EITHER OF THEM AGAIN. GO ROMNEY 2012!

  8. Chris Says:

Well, Leslie, if he chooses huckabee (and it’s not even starting to look that way) he will lose. With Mitt, he has a fighting chance. Polls show only Mitt can help him. All others are either unknown, have too much baggage from Bush (whom I like), or just fringe. I think McCain has his veep picked and that person is aware of it. I find it quite interesting that we have heard no ’serious’ names in the past week - since the olympics began. Draw your own on that one. We have heard that the nutty fringe evangalials are trying to strong arm their guy onto the ticket. McCain won’t meet with them, but he has sent campaign people. But their guy has said he does not want to ‘take a pay cut’. Get a clue. For huckabee, it’s just about the money and fame. Not the service to God and Country. It does make me wonder. Did these guys meet with the head of the McCain campaign in Mich? If so, they were in for a rude awaking. His last name is…. Romney! (Mitts older brother). Hummmm.

  9. Leslie Says:

I have noticed that there isn’t a lot of talk anymore about VP with Romney at the olympics…interesting. I will vote for McCain if he picks Mitt, but I want to see Mitt as President, and I don’t think that being McCain’s VP pick will be a path toward the presidency for him. I truly believe that Obama will win a landslide victory, no matter who McCain picks. I could be wrong, but that’s what I see happening.

  10. Ron Says:

Jonathan Riskind found a few die hard, sore loser, Huckalites and acts like it is the way of the state of Ohio. I am from Ohio and the people that I talk to are mostly concerned with: 1)Jobs 2)Economy 3)Energy costs 4)National security.
We are willing to put our “social conservative” agendas on the back burner in order to insure SURVIVAL !

  11. 2thepoint Says:

Regarding Parma resident Diane Stover’s quote “Christians are praying earnestly for the right person…” Couldn’t agree more – I’m doing the same.

If God answers their prayers with a Romney appointment, will they turn their snarling, gnashing, vitriolic teeth on the Creator himself? Will the self-appointed, self-anointed, 21st century Pharisees acknowledge that God might have a better handle on how to straighten out the United Sates than they do? It’s easy to mumble a few prayers – far more challenging to accept the answer.

    Go USA!

  12. 2thepoint Says:

Thanks, Doug, for the links. Here is a link INSIDE the first article you posted:http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/11/mccain.vp/#cnnSTCVideo

(It confirms Ron’s comments that Romney’s economics expertise makes him the #1 guy to pick.)

  13. Paulee & Mike Says:

Thanks everyone, great pictures, articles, and comments. Mitt is the best choice, it’s the economy, who is better qualified?
I don’t know what the Clinton’s have up their sleeves, but this could get messy. If Obama takes Hillary, they could really win this fall, that would leave Mitt free and preparing for 2012. If Huck’s irrational people would just go away!!!!!!

  14. Marybeth Says:

If McCain would be so foolish as to select Huckabee as his running mate, the MSM will somehow drag out EVERY controversial thing Huckabee ever said - either from the pulpit or in his capacity as governor.

They will paint him as the most far-right wingnut this country has ever seen. They will expose his forgiveness of and lobbying for the release of murderers that murdered again. They will make fun of his “God chose me to run for President” statements. They will point to his raising of taxes in Arlansas. They will find those in Arkansas who say (with good reason, btw) that he single-handedly destroyed the Republican Party in that state. They will play his gaffe about Obama at the NRA convention ad nauseum.

He will be the world’s biggest gaffer and goober by the time they finish with him.

The sad part is, they have much material to choose from and basis for much of what they will accuse him of.

Let’s hope in this one instance that McCain fulfulls his reputation of playing Maverick to the hilt and tells these evangelical “leaders” they’re not getting their way by threatening their flocks won’t vote for him if he doesn’t pick Huck or another evangelical.

  15. JA Says:

Just read this and I’m wondering…is there going to be an uproar among the Huck evangelicals about this? Or is Tom Ridge acceptable to them as long as he’s not Mormon?

    From The Weekly Standard:

McCain: Won’t Rule Out Pro-choice Running Mate

‘IN A WIDE-RANGING INTERVIEW aboard his campaign plane this morning, John McCain said that he is open to choosing a pro-choice running mate and named former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge as someone who merits serious consideration despite his support for abortion rights.

“I think that the pro-life position is one of the important aspects or fundamentals of the Republican Party,” McCain said. “And I also feel that–and I’m not trying to equivocate here–that Americans want us to work together. You know, Tom Ridge is one of the great leaders and he happens to be pro-choice. And I don’t think that that would necessarily rule Tom Ridge out.”

McCain’s comments came in response to a question about comments he made to several reporters during the Republican primary season. During that exchange, McCain was asked whether New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg would make a good running mate. McCain offered strong words of praise for Bloomberg but said that Bloomberg’s position on abortion–he is also pro-choice–would make it difficult to choose him as a vice presidential candidate.

In the interview this morning, McCain suggested that Ridge would be more palatable to social conservatives than Bloomberg.

“I think it’s a fundamental tenet of our party to be pro-life but that does not mean we exclude people from our party that are pro-choice. We just have a–albeit strong–but just it’s a disagreement. And I think Ridge is a great example of that. Far moreso than Bloomberg, because Bloomberg is pro-gay rights, pro, you know, a number of other issues.”‘

  16. EVELIO PEREZ Says:

It gets worse…..Colin Powell to endorse Obama at the Democratic National Convention, I have heard it all .

  17. EVELIO PEREZ Says:

  18. Aaron Says:

It’s anti Mormon folks, nothing more, nothing less. I will not vote for religious bigotry. That is exactly what McCain would be giving into. However, I do believe Romney is the choice. Many think the pick will come after the dems convention. I think it will come right before there convention and after Obamas pick, around the time of Closing Ceremonies. Kick back, relax and have faith! Smuckabee will not prevail!

  19. Chris Says:

Aaron. Were losing hope that it’s Mitt. I agree that Romney should be the one. But stranger things have happened in this election cycle. It speaks volumes to me that Huckabee is silent on this issue of religious intolerence. I also find it very strange that we have had very little veep talk since the opening of the olympics. McCain is in Mich, with Romney bro greeting and meeting with him. (he’s the McCain state mjr, I think). I do wish Mac would have sent the bigot train packing, by telling them to get over it. But, he’s got an election to win, and might be trying to find a way to split the hair.

  20. Stefany Says:

Ron:I’m a natural born Buckeye and my father’s a southern Ohio small business owner. He and everyone I’ve spoken with feels we need Romney for the very reasons you mentioned.

2thepoint: Thanks for your comments and the wonderful Olympics pics. In NBC Olympic coverage, the cameras seem to be carefully avoiding “He who was not to be named in the Primaries” Romney.

  21. Chris Says:

    What if…
What if the reason we have not heard much lately is that Mac has made his choice, and his choice is enjoying some ‘down time’ in China? So, instead of taking the limelight off the games and the US TEAM, this person and the lead candidate have chosen to keep mum, and keep them guessing. What if the Ridge name was put out there for the taliban types to run towards with their torches, keeping the fires off the guy at the games? Humm? What if…
Just a theory, but one worthy of entertaining?

  22. Aaron Says:

I’m not one that believes Romney has to be mentioned during the Olympics. He has been snubbed though, unlike the Olympics in Torino, Italy, were they zoomed in on him during opening ceremony. It’s the buzz and paustive energy, that they will be able to reference too, as well as divert attention from Dems distorting his buisness record. Keep in mind the games are only half way over. It points to his olympic achievement. I am absoleutely convinced, McCain knows it’s Romney. I don’t think he’ll wait until after the convention”Dems” to announce. The Clinton story, as well as other surprises and the fact the REp convention is right after dems. Those things alone will stop any serios breakthrough for Obama. I think he’ll announce before or during there convention, PROBABLY BEFORE, so that it looms in contrast over there convention, as well as limit the attacks.
