The Race for Second in Command

My main man for Massachusett’s Senator, Jeff Beatty, is a Mitt for VP booster! Who knew!

Jeff Beatty’s recommendation of MR to the McCain campaign says two important things. It speaks volumes about Jeff Beatty’s integrity. Gov. Romney endorsed Jeff’s primary opponent, Jim Ogonowski, because Jim did so well in his race against Democrat Nikki Tsongas two years before. Mitt’s endorsement of Ogonowski was understandable, given his performance against a big-name Democrat. Jeff Beatty was a political unknown at the time. A lot of politicians might have harbored a fair amount of resentment toward another politician for endorsing the other guy, even given the circumstances…..but not Beatty. He comes out with his letter recommending Mitt as VP to the party’s presumptive nominee, putting party loyalty before any personal feelings he might have had.

The other thing it says is that the leadership of the Mass. GOP is coalescing behind it’s two brightest stars, Romney and Beatty. This bodes well for the campaign to unseat John Kerry from his perch in the U.S. Senate.

Some political analysts put Romney at the top of McCain’s shortlist. Jeff Beatty, a Harwich Republican running against U.S. Sen. John Kerry, sent a letter to McCain Monday urging him to pick Romney.

“Our country faces two great challenges: a National Security challenge and a challenge to our National Economy,” he wrote. “I believe that your leadership as our President and the economic experience of a Vice President Mitt Romney is the combination that will ensure America meets those twin challenges successfully.”

Beatty cited Romney’s experience overseeing the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and leading Massachusetts as governor. “America right now needs leaders with the relevant experience,” he said. “A McCain-Romney ticket offers Americans the best possible Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates with the relevant experience to meet our two top challenges.”

Romney could bring balance to the GOP ticket, Kryzanek said. Romney seems to have closer ties than McCain to the Republican Party’s conservative base. He is also more youthful in appearance, which may help quiet concerns over McCain’s age, the professor said.

“The argument that Romney can make is that he has the economic and business experience and savvy that John McCain does not,” Kryzanek said.

I just read that a source told National Review that Tim Pawlenty is McCain’s VP choice and it will be announced soon. If this is true, all I can say is UGH. No way should Pawlenty be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Big mistake on McCain’s part. Let’s hope this rumor is not true!

  2. KKSM Says:

Intersting! Last week, the sources all said “Mitt is the man”. I don’t beleive anything until I see it. If it is Pawlenty, I guess we just have to live it out… KKSM!

Senator McCain just stated on S.Hannity’s show that the “process” is not finished, or something to that effect; I’m not sure what he would say if he had made a decision…

  4. Noelle Says:

If Pawlenty is McCain’s choice, I think that is a mistake. Not because Pawlenty is a bad guy or anything, he is just completely unknown. If Pawlenty is the choice, I am afraid it is an indication that McCain’s judgment is not sound. McCain is not being very successful in giving me any reason to vote for him. So far the best reason I’ve got is at least he’s not Obama.

Myself and along with others guessed Pawlenty months ago. Fact is that McCain is MCCain and no one is going to tell him who to pick. Pawlenty was loyal to him, even when times were dark, and I’m sure McCain likes his mushy middle style of governing. He might make MN competitive but I don’t think he would pull it into the win column.

I think Pawlenty’s boyish looks will draw comparisons to Dan Quayle and will completely neuter any criticism of Obama’s youth and inexperience.

I appreciate the heads up on this Beatty, fellow. I hope there are bold new conservative leaders in the party, it has been downright depressing this cycle. I saw Pawlenty on TV first time this week, seemed like a sweet older guy but ZZZZZZZZ I couldn’t stay awake with his soft drawl and long pauses between responses. It’s gotta be Romney now.

  7. KKSM Says:

I am going to have to take McCain at his word and believe him when he told Sean Hannity that he hadn’t even finished the “narrowing down” phase. I am glad. If it is true, it gives us more time for campaigning to McCain in Mitt’s behalf. He has to be smart enough to look at all the polls and see that nearly every poll has put Romney in the best position. Don’t you think???

  8. Marybeth Says:

Let’s hope McCain isn’t this dumb

  9. KKSM Says:

Don’t panic…. just keep writing letters, making phone calls and talking to God…

    yeah….

  10. JA Says:

Does anyone know if Mitt is back from his vacation yet? I’m wondering what his schedule is this week.

I read that Obama is spending $5 million on ads to air during the Olympics. Just think how much free publicity McCain will get during the Olympics if he chooses Mitt…

  11. KKSM Says:

I heard last week that his vacation only lasted a week, but we will see. I have not heard anything other than that, but considering how accurate the media is, who knows????

Yeah, you are right, it would be good publicity if McCain announced Romney this very week… good grief, how do you spell relief????

  12. JA Says:

McCain is in Nevada and Colorado tomorrow…so he will surely be talking to plenty of Mitt supporters.

  13. KKSM Says:

Did you all email garybauer? I did and I have also written to the McCain camp, the rnc and cpac as well. Just keep at it.

McCain is getting around. He needs to get that guy named Mitt in there so he can get some luster… (opposite of lack luster, hahahah)

  14. Mit 10 Says:

I hope McCain heeds his advice and I hope Americans recognize they need to hire someone with experience on foreign policy and the economy.
