It seems everyone is still saying it should be Mitt. I also heard this p.m. on Fox, they think Mccain could pick Tom Ridge. They are friends. I think the excitement will only come if Mccain chooses Mitt.

Marybeth and KKSM-I think Huck just played the religion card to propel himself to a point where he was a major player in Super Tuesday. I think McCain just reaped the benefit of Hucks hand. It was reported that Rommney campers believed that Charlie Crist was promised the VP slot to endorse McCain. Who knows? I don't think that McCain promised Huck anything. McCain never had to take on Huck because he was not the threat that Romney had been. So they just looked like the best of friends but I don't think Huck will be a part of a McCain administration. He stayed in the race to make it appear that he was the real #2 (no pun intended) and he wore out his welcome with the GOP. I agree that his cutesy comments finely got the best of him when he misspoke at the NRA convention.

Marybeth, just let me postulate a moment here. Mind you, I could be completely off track here. We shall see or more likely, we will never know.

I wonder if Huck pulled the "Mormons aren't Christians and we cannot let this guy anywhere near the Presidency" card. I wonder if he convinced McCain of some ugly things that Mitt has now been able to show, prove or exemplify otherwise.

There were unsavory things he said when he came here abt 6 yrs ago at the S. Baptist Convention. I just wonder because he has proven his dislike for the Latter-dat Saints for years.

Oh well, I shall not say more, I do not wish to be a part of "bearing false witness". I hope I have not done that already, I am just wondering...

KKSM,

I think McCain used Huckabee to knock Mitt out in West VA and to split the conservative vote. It sure looked like Mac & Huck had some kind of deal in the works - remember how Huckabee and McCain refused to atack each other in the debates and continually trashed Mitt?

But what kind of deal was it? Was it a VP deal? Who knows?

All I know is Huck blew away any VP nod with his disgraceful comment about Obama at the NRA convention.

Maybe Mitt is the default VP choice because of this.

I think McCain and Huck may have cut an unofficial deal at one point, then Huck suspected McCain would back out once he no longer needed him (or was so delusional he actually thought he could win) so he went full bore on his own (and sputtered out of course.) Either that or he was just milking the free publicity for all it was worth to get that tv deal with Fox News.

Gosh, do you think it at all possible that McCain was manipulated by Huckabee? I always kind of think of it as otherwise, but now I am beginning to wonder if it may not have been this way with all those trix and Huck staying in so late as though there was a prayer for him at that point to take it away from McCain.

opinions anyone??

An interesting thing from Linsey Graham on Mitt and the VP nod...

Graham: Romney ‘very much a contender’ for veep
By J. Taylor Rushing
Posted: 07/22/08 01:12 PM [ET]
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) is “very much a contender” to be Sen. John McCain's running mate, according to one of McCain’s closest allies on Capitol Hill.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who earlier this year told The Hill that McCain's vice presidential pick should be someone the Arizona senator "feels comfortable with," said Romney fits that description.

"I think he's very much a contender for the job," Graham said. "They have a good relationship. That's all I'll say."

Romney challenged McCain for the GOP nomination earlier this year but fell short. Recently the two have campaigned together.

Graham's comments come amid speculation that McCain will pick his running mate before the Olympic Games begin and that Romney is widely considered near the top of his list.

I don't know how and am not set up to post and this was short so I put it on here in the comment slot. I hope that is ok...

Marybeth, I hear what you’re saying about the tin ears of JM!

However, if McCain was cagey enough throughout the primaries to join forces with Huckabee to engage the Evangelical fist to gut-punch Mitt at every turn, I would say JM is savvy. Now that McCain is the nominee-in-waiting he's been less focused. I DO believe, as he faced growing dissatisfaction inside and outside of his campaign recently, JM rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and decided it was time to grab his management team by the nape of the neck and shake 'em up. With the role of Rick Davis (campaign manager) reduced and giving Steve Schmidt (political adviser) full operational control, an announcement naming McCain's VP this week is a real possibility. Schmidt wants to shine and IF the VP nominee is Romney, Mitt’s brain power could be in the mix as well.

I believe it rankles McCain no end that Obama is getting more press/accolades/photo ops/support as he sashays around Iraq and Afghanistan than McCain ever did for all the years he bravely endured as a POW and for his trips to the deserts of doom. It's not unreasonable that Bulldog McCain would announce his Veep this week just to give Obama a right proper head-noogie.

Mitt’s heading off to the Olympics – Opening Ceremonies Aug 8 - to cheer on our fine American athletes. Don’t know if Mitt will stay in Beijing for the event’s entirety, but hey! McCain could get a big splash if he names Mitt while Romney is in China. Think of the hoopla, historical setting, etc.

It could all be a ruse, but then again, it could happen. I’m keeping my ear tuned to the news!

I listened. I did NOT hear one word about Romney. He did not even mention his name.

Where did you get his info??? When I called, she also assured me that he has not said that.

I was oveall impressed with what he did say though. He talked alot about some of his concerns: federal funding, embryonic stem cell research, clonein unwullingness to vote for marriage act (DOMA, Defense of Marriage Act) and how JM feels states can handle it. Well, some states have already proven they can NOT handle it and will make activist rules.

HE said he is more supportive of McCain because he is more in line on abortion, gay adoptions etc. and that Obama thinks homosexuality should be the norm.

All in all, it was very intersting and like I said, he did say "I don't even know the vp candidate", but he stopped right there. Neither the name Romney nor Mormonism even came up.

This was the most recent broadcast. Now, if he has said something more recent than this broadcast, I cannot find it and his spokeswoman did not know of anything about it. so, there you have all that I know. It could fit in a thimble

Chris and Mitt 10: do you know anyone else who lives in the Salt Lake valley or close to here on this board??

Oh, you can call 1.800.a.family and explain what you want to talk about and they will put you through. The young woman I talked with was kind. She pointed out that there maybe some differences in religious beliefs, but there is also great commonality. I assured her that there is great commonality where it matters, as we love The Father and His Son that died on the cross. She seemed a little flumoxed, but she was good and kind.

Give a call if you desire.

I guess I better be tuning in to Fox News so I don't miss the announcement. I will be reborn if it is Romney and die all over again if it is not.

I hope we will all be celebrating real soon.

Chris I was really hoping Dobson was above Bigotry but he is down in the trenches. He will stir up the hive all over again and cause the republican party to splinter. He really does not deserve a radio spot in mormonville if he refuses to appreciate his audience for the good and decent people that they are. Family values is something members of the LDS church cultivated and nurtured long before he was a household name.

And now dobson has released a statement that he will endorse mccain depending only on the Veep pick. He said Romney's Mormonism will be a 'problem'. I think it's now time for KSL to call him and tell him his timeslots in the belly of the beast is now a thing of the past. Tell him he's gonzo, if mormonism is a problem, because IT IS NOT, unless your a bigot.

Thanks for the interesting links 2thepoint. That would be a good place to announce, I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much though. Also Mit 10, I probably wouldn't have known either if I hadn't followed the race pretty obsessively. Ha.

Do you really think McCain is that politically savvy, 2the point? He has had a tin ear when it comes to conservatives ever since he became the presumptive GOP nominee. What's to prevent him from giving conservatives another kick in the teeth? He seems to relish doing it.

Newsweek blog article By Holly Bailey

http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/07/21/mccain-close-to-naming-his-veep.aspx

[But let's look at the clues: McCain tomorrow is holding a town hall near Mitt Romney's vacation home in New Hampshire, and reporters on the trail this week with McCain have been put on notice that there might be an additional event tomorrow. Key word there: "might." In other words, OMG! Now if the rumor mill is to be believed, Romney is near the top of McCain's list--indeed, the former gov even gets namechecked in the aforementioned Novak item. Could McCain possibly show up tomorrow in New Hampshire with Romney, his former foe, and announce they are not only close friends but now running mates? Anything's possible. The setting, after all, would be special for McCain--New Hampshire is the state that raised the onetime underdog's campaign from the dead, not once but twice. And, bingo, McCain would probably lead the evening newscasts tomorrow.]

Head-fake?

I don’t often watch CNN or Anderson Cooper’s show, but I happened to catch field reporter Dana Bash on the AC program addressing the topic of Novak’s prediction that McCain will announce his VP this week. Ms. Bash reported that one of McCain’s closest advisors on the JM plane said that McCain wouldn’t be announcing anyone today (7/21/08) then added “I CAN’T RULE OUT TOMORROW.”

Bash then stated that it was the “ultimate in political code-tracking” and that it caused a “total frenzy in Washington this afternoon.”

Here’s the podcast – see topic at about 9 minutes 20 seconds:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/podcasts/ac360/site/2008/07/22/cooper.podcast.monday.cnn

Who knows?! Tomorrow could be VEEP day (I'm in a different time zone from this website. It's 11:52 PM here; still 7/21.) If Romney is the guy, I know there’ll be collective rousing cheers from all ComMITTheads everywhere - from here in the furthest corner of south west America (southern California) to Paulee’s neck of the woods in the nation’s northeast – Maine!

Keep your fingers and toes crossed!

Here’s a good article to read while waiting…

I agree with David Kim that Novak is often wrong.

So will it be Thursday? What will we do if it is not Mitt? It will be like Super Tuesday all over again.

It is hard to read McCain. Hoping and praying that it will be Romney.

Also, the State Legislator's Convention (which is for every state, not just Louisiana) is being held then in New Orleans so that may also have something to do with McCain's visit.

John, you've influenced my political "junkiness" too! 'Preciate your dedication to ComMITTed.

You're a great activist and your example is helping to influence the next generation - your son - to be a great conservative American patriot. With the constant barrage from the liberal media and liberal academia, we need to continually educate our wonderful kids!

2thepoint,

Thanks for the heads up on Mitt's plans to attend the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. If the McCain campaign does make the announcement this week and then Mitt flies to China to attend the Olympic opening, wow, what a photo op/media buzz event that will be!

What a political junkie I have become in the last 18 months!

Even my son and his girlfriend wanted to come to a recent meeting I attended to meet Sarah Steelman who is running for Governor in Missouri. They couldn't make the meeting, but both of them were waiting for me at home and they couldn't wait to hear about the evening. We talked for over an hour about Sarah's candidacy and the other people I met at the event. It was great and it gets better with each passing week.

Thanks for the heads up on Mitt’s plans to attend the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

They couldn’t make the meeting, but both of them were waiting for me at home and they couldn’t wait to hear about the evening. We talked for over an hour about Sarah’s candidacy and the other people I met at the event. It was great and it gets better with each passing week.

Oooh weee! John, your news has literally given me butterflies in my stomach. Feel like I'm a little kid again... waiting for Santa on Christmas Eve!

This is BIG.

It feels like Romney and McCain are working behind the scenes; Mitt's leaving for Beijing maybe on August 6th or 7th - Olympic Opening Ceremonies are Aug 8. I can see Mitt chomping at the bit - wanting to be turned loose to really raise money and get some good campaigning in before the Dems gather for convention on Aug 25. Mitt would also get some great press in China for the Repub ticket as the Veep nominee/former Olympic savior.

Where will each of us be and what will we be doing when we hear the news?

Keep sayin' your prayers, people!

I'd like to believe it, but Novak is no better than a coin-toss (or perhaps even worse) on his predictions or when he hears some skinny from one of his "sources."

I'm waiting til the fat lady sings before getting excited about anything.

Well Trooper, for me it depends on who he DOES pick. If he picks someone I would want as president, I'll vote for him even though I don't want John McCain as president. If he picks Mitt, I'll not only vote for him, I'll enthusiastically push the ticket like I did for Mitt in the primary. If he picks someone like Lindsey Graham who is as bad as himself on the issues, I will have to do a write-in. I don't want Obama in office, but really its up to John McCain to beat him, not me. If McCain wants to throw my vote away, so be it. We'll see how it pans out.

If this is true, it's timing like I said in an earlier post months ago. Any candidate that can draw media attention away from the other candidate/issue to his, is playing the media for attention. I also find it curious that McCain is currently in New England too....hmmm.

I have been wrestling with the idea that if Mitt is not on the ticket, I will sit this one out. I'm still not comfortable with choosing not to vote though, so the jury is still out on that decision.

As I said on the other post, will McCain "pull a fast one"? I certainly hope not! I pray our man Mitt is the man that gets to be second in command of this great nation of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!! We need Mitt so badly!

I said before that I think it would be good strategy to announce early so that they could get started on campaigning and help even more Americans see what and who Mitt is so that they can understand how badly we need this man "close to the helm" so to speak. It would be a good move I think!

Say your prayers!!!!

I'll be disappointed if it's not Mitt, too! We all will.

And I like the strategy behind McCain releasing his VP pick while Obama is on his big publicity-stunt trip to the the Middle-east. It's smart. Something's got to steal Obama's liberal-media thunder! That ought to do the trick. And besides, getting your team all rounded up and fighting together, officially, should happen sooner than later anyway. We'll need to pull out all our firepower to bring down Obama; and the more time we have the better.

I just heard this news as well, wow! Are we ready? Will our mitt-mas dreams come true? The suspense is going to drive us all crazy. Will Dr. Dobson be okay with Mitt, or will he make things difficult? They say he is about to endorse McCain. We are so close. I pray it's the right choice for this country.
