Romney-Wins-With-or-Without-VP-Spot

By leaving the GOP nomination in a timely fashion, Mitt Romney is poised to win with or without a spot on the McCain ticket. Though Romney is certainly hoping to join the ticket as John McCain’s presidential running mate, if he is not chosen, he is clearly the leading candidate going into the next election cycle, whether that is in four or eight years.

CHOOSING ROMNEY

John McCain won the presidential nomination fair and square. The problem for McCain is that he didn’t win over conservatives, he split them between Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney. In a sense, McCain’s win happened only because he split the financial and evangelical base of the party. McCain clearly won the national defense component of the party, but that will not win him the White House — especially during a time of an unpopular war.

Times have changed since the last primary for John McCain. America has slipped into financial chaos. If McCain were to run today against Mitt Romney, a well known financial fix-it man, Romney would win two out of three contests. Earlier the Iraq War was still front and center, whereas today the economy is the most important issue to voters. McCain has many choices in a vice presidential selection, but none so credible in speaking on financial matters than Mitt Romney.

“if he is not chosen, he is clearly the leading candidate going into the next election cycle, whether that is in four or eight years.”

As much as I like Romney, and as much as I want to see him as the nominee next time around, I don’t agree with this statement. Certainly, right now, Romney is the favorite for the next cycle - but if he is not choosen to be VP, someone else will be - and it will likely be a younger Conservative. At the very least, that person is elevated to the same level as Romney for four years from now.

Mitt could still win - though its worth pointing out that its never been done before - but the only way he has an easy ride to the nomination is if he is Veep.

  2. John Cronin Says:

If Mitt is chosen for the VP spot, in all probability he will have to help McCain spin a future amnesty bill. He will also have to fall in line with McCain’s energy policy and explain why he was for drilling in ANWR during the primary campaign and why, a few months later, he is now against it. The left’s characterization of MR as a “flip-flopper” will be seen as totally justified. Romney and McCain are just too far apart on most issues for the two of them to be a good fit.

It’s important to remember, if someone else is picked for the VP spot and that ticket goes down to defeat, Mitt will be seen as a selfless promoter of the Republican Party and of conservative causes and someone who cannot be blamed for the ticket’s defeat.

  3. Chris Says:

    John,
They’ll find a way to spin it that it was Romney fault we lost, on or off the ticket. You cant’ have a guyasqueeky clean as Mitt, running for office. It just ain’t done.

    Good comments, all.

    Off topic …

There was some carousing at the Texas convention last night! Ron Paul dropped out of the race last night and is forming a “Campaign for Liberty” to help spread his libertarian leanings. He is calling for supporters to attend an alternative mini-convention he’s organizing to be held during the Republican Natl Convention in Minnesota on September 2nd. He refuses to endorse McCain.

  5. Chris Says:

ron Paul is today’s Ross Perot. Paul respects Romney. Perhaps he would support the ticket if Romney were on it? I know Paul can’t stand Huckabee and Rudy.

  6. Sarah Says:

Really Ron Paul respects Romney because I hear nothing to that effect from Paul’s supporters or should I call them Die-hard fans? If so then thats news to me. All of Paul’s supporters even bolster the lefts view of him being a flip-flopper. They probably helped keep Romney from taking the south because you know we can’t just blame the lost purely on bigotry.

At least Paul finally admitted there is no way in heaven and earth and hell for him to win. He can have that mini-convention if he wants. Maybe he should have it in Hershey, Pennsylvania. That would definitely allure people. You know a convention in the heart of the chocolate capital of America. I’d go to it. Maybe thats what the Republicans should do. Announce a convention in Hershey Penn. That would draw a crowd like no other. I’m all for it.

  7. Simon Says:

Hi everyone… FOX just Hired The Huckster as a political commentator. LOLOLOL!!!!

  8. Sarah Says:

Oh my…just when I thought we were rid of him. He keeps popping up. Well it looks as if he’s out of the VP pick ( and I honestly think McCain doesn’t want him. I think he put him on the short list just to appease him. )

Well I guess I can get used to it. Still don’t like him very much.

  9. Chris Says:

Sarah. Why? The guy can’t talk himself out of a paperbag. Now I can’t watch any news channel! That reeks. But on the flip side, it is a paying gig. he might be able to make his mortgage payment now.

Paul resects Romney. His supporters are tin filil nutters, for the most part. they are another story.

  10. 2thepoint Says:

Simon, this news is sickeningly unbelievable! After his dufus comment about “shooting Obama” he probably saw the writing on the wall for VP…

If I hear thinly-veiled swipes at Mitt from Huckabee as he “comments politically” I’ll boycott FOX and their sponsors!!!

Now the FOX commissary will have to put sauteed squirrel on the menu…

  11. John Cronin Says:

Huckabee on Fox…..I think I’m going to hurl!

  12. Mit 10 Says:

Hey one more reason for me not to watch FOX NEWS!!!!!!!!

  13. bigmo Says:

I guess that’s one way to make Bill O’Reilly look conservative again, put him side by side with the Huckster. Still, at least Laura Ingraham is getting her own show there.

  14. KKSM Says:

Do you know the details of Laura Ingraham’s show that is coming? I would probably watch her. She is definitely a straight shooter and seems less brutal than others ( a tad).

I think it is time to write Fox News about this other Huckabee thing. Is this a fact? I cannot imagine.

  15. John Cronin Says:

    KKSM,

At first I thought it must be a joke, so I did a Google search and Fox News is confirming it.

  16. KKSM Says:

I am beginning to watch them less and less these days. Hum, wonder why! It is time or a letter even though I know it is worthless and means nothing to Foxnews. They, like all big corps just do what they think is in their best interests….

On the bright side, perhaps this means we don’t have to worry about him for vp. He is just unpleasant to me.

  17. KKSM Says:

oh, John, thanks for doing the research. I hadn’t quite gotten around to that as of yet!

  18. JA Says:

Speaking of Laura Ingraham, I read that she was on Greta Van Sustern’s show recently and said Huck would be a good VP choice! Her reasoning was that Huck would “connect with the broad base of conservatives”. Did anyone see this? I was shocked, as she has never seemed to be a Huck fan.
How can the same woman who gave Mitt such a great introduction at CPAC now be advocating Huck for VP?

  19. KKSM Says:

did not see that… yuck! He would be devestating for the repub/conservative base. I am surprised she said that. On the other hand, perhaps she was just trying to not be too one sided. Maybe she was trying to be nice, but she has never struck me as ingenuous…. argh!

  20. Leslie Says:

Huck voters are one-issue voters — people who think it’s important to have a “true Christian” in the White House. So sure, he’d energize that base. I think a McCain/Huck ticket would do a wonderful thing– take down both of these bozos at once. It will never happen though, because McCain’s advisors would never allow it.

  21. bigmo Says:

She likely doesn’t want Mitt tarnished by being associated with the McCain administration. She called Huck a “loser” on her radio show during the primaries. Then again maybe this was the response to the backlash she likely got from that. Oh and KKSM, her show starts this Monday at 5 pm eastern, 2 pm pacific. She’s taking over John Gibson’s slot. I forget what the new show is called though.

  22. KKSM Says:

Thanks for the info bigmo. I will try to check in now and again. What are they doing with John Gibson? I am often not available to watch TV at 3 in the afternoon, but I mostly like her. She generally calls them as she sees them and she may have said what she did because she things they deserve each other.

  23. mikeVA Says:

Do you all think that McCain has run a good campaign so far? The chances of him and his campaign handlers making a great choice like Romney are slim. I think that they will pick Pawlenty.

  24. bigmo Says:

KKSM, I’m not sure what’s going on with John Gibson. They’ve had others filling in for him all week, but starting Monday its a new show.

  25. KKSM Says:

Thanx bigmo. I appreciate all you contribute. I hope he is ok. I have alot of meetings this week, I shall try to check in in between…. thanx again… KKSM

  26. Mit 10 Says:

Maybe Romney is better off not being tarnished by a McCain administration but I honestly think Romney could win over so many voters if he was given the chance. Washington is failing all of us. We need to vote the BUMS out!

  27. bigmo Says:

Thanks KKSM. I’m just glad we have a forum here for our opinions. I caught the first episode of the show today. Her guests included Mitt himself, Fred Thompson and Bill O’Reilly. Pretty impressive lineup. Mitt was great, as usual. Fred was pretty good too. I lost interest during Bill’s portion, though I used to be a fan.

  28. KKSM Says:

I was in meetings like I said so I missed it. Dang it! I hate missing Mitt. Blast it. I get bored with Bill O now some too, mostly because he is “always right”. I really do agree with him on alot of issues though and as rude as it is, I really do like it when he “beats up” on really far and out of line people. They rerun alot of stuff in the middle of the night, perhaps I will check and see if I can find it. Thanks again. KKSM

  29. bigmo Says:

Ok, the show is called “Just In with Laura Ingraham.” Its not Bill’s style I find disagreeable. I find it entertaining when he lays the hammer down on his guests. I just notice he’s gone soft on a few issues which happen to irk me, that and too much entertainment type news. I really got bored with the Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton coverage. I still watch his show now and then, maybe once a week, but its just not like it used to be, to me.
