Republicans Are In Denial

A conservative voice for Republicans, Tom Coburn, writes in the online edition of the WSJ what many of us are thinking: If Republicans want to start winning elections again…Start acting like Republicans!

As congressional Republicans contemplate the prospect of an electoral disaster this November, much is being written about the supposed soul-searching in the Republican Party. A more accurate description of our state is paralysis and denial.

Many Republicans are waiting for a consultant or party elder to come down from the mountain and, in Moses-like fashion, deliver an agenda and talking points on stone tablets. But the burning bush, so to speak, is delivering a blindingly simple message: Behave like Republicans.

What? I didn’t understand this one. I haven’t changed, still want small government, fiscal responsibility, no deviant marriages or judicial activism changing the social structure, still want lower taxes, etc. I just find that the Republican party no longer stands for this stuff. John McCain certainly doesn’t. So yeah, I’m waiting for some conservative leadership to step forward in the Republican party, or else I’ve gotta continue finding a new party representative of my beliefs. So what was your point?

Wow! Coburn’s article was nothing short of the gospel. His solutions are exactly what the Republican party needs to hear EXCEPT until we get to his last paragraph. McCain? McCain as the limited government Saviour? Oh my gosh, doesn’t Coburn realize that every bill this decade that McCain’s name attached to, also carries the name of one of the three most liberal Democrats in Washington?

If McCain is the saviour then I don’t need saving. The Constitution is fine for me. Perhaps one day McCain will read it for himself.

Unfortunatedly, the only way these guys will ever get it is if we get massacred on election day……………………romney 2012

    Lizzy,

“If Republicans want to start winning elections again…Start acting like Republicans!”….That was my point.

I agree, this was a great article… up to the last paragraph.

“John McCain” and “humble” are two words that should not be in the same sentence together. I can think of 100 adjectives to describe Senator McCain, many of them laudable, but “humble” is not on the list. That is a gross mis-characterization if I ever saw one.

Good luck branding him that way, Mr. Coburn. That’s a marketing strategy doomed for failure.

  6. Andrew Says:

Correction: Republicans are NOT in denial. They are positive that they will get crushed come November. Their only confusion is about how to avoid that result.
